PlayStation 5 has officially turned five, giving us much to reflect upon. Has the console lived up to its potential, left folks disappointed, or fallen somewhere in between? We get into that -- alongside new Sony financials that paint an admittedly rosy picture -- before getting into the meat of our show. Two new Sony-aligned games have been revealed, but they've left many potential players puzzled, as neither offering is actually on PlayStation hardware. For starters, NCSoft's long-rumored Horizon MMO is real. It's called Steel Frontiers and it actually looks really nice. But it's only on PC and mobile. Meanwhile, a new Ratchet & Clank game has also been showcased, an online arena shooter called Ranger Rumble. But it too eschews PS5 and PS4, instead going straight to mobile platforms only. What gives? Why does Sony seem half-in on these off-platform initiatives, all the while neglecting their core audience that could give these respective titles the boost they need? Is it time for them to break old habits and embrace a more cogent multiplatform direction that centers PlayStation first and foremost? Sometimes it can be pretty amazing how one small decision can have a huge impact. Mike Jaffe knows about that. Mike was usually on his way to work in the morning when his wife, Sabrina, woke up their one year old daughter. He was also on his way home from work when Sabrina was putting her to bed. But one Monday morning, he decided that the next day, Tuesday, he would go in to work late so that they could all have breakfast together. On Tuesday morning, he was having second thoughts. This job was important to him. But he decided to stick to the plan, and they had a nice family breakfast together that morning. That breakfast saved Mike's life. He worked on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, and that Tuesday morning breakfast was September 11, 2001. Hundreds of his colleagues were already at work and did not survive. My guest today is Hannah. She was driving one day over a small bridge, on her way to meet someone, and just by chance looked over at the water below. That quick glance ended up having a life-changing impact. A lot of weird things can happen when you work in a retail store. You can ask anyone who's worked retail for a while, and they will have some stories. My daughter worked at a popular clothing store for a while here in Florida. She worked mostly around the fitting rooms. And she was constantly amazed – and annoyed – at the things people would do in those little rooms where you try on clothes. Oh yeah, some people would just leave the place a big mess. But there were other customers who took it a step further – and whatever you're imagining right now, you're probably correct. But what if you're working in a retail environment, just a regular day, and you turn around and see a man with a gun pointed at you? How do you think you would react? When you meet someone for the first time, do you trust them by default? I like to think that I just assume the best of a stranger, until they prove they aren't worthy of my trust. But that can be dangerous in some cases. There were a couple of people who were partners in a business and they were looking for office space to rent. They searched online and found an ad for what looked like the perfect space. They met the owner there and he showed them around. They paid him first and last month's rent using Venmo, and planned to sign the lease agreement the next day. They got the keys and moved everything in. But they never heard from the owner again. After a couple of days they still weren't able to reach him. Then the next day, the ACTUAL owner showed up, asking who they were any why they had moved all their stuff in, since he was planning to lease the space out soon. The original fake owner was a disgruntled employee. He made out with a few thousand dollars, handed over the keys, and disappeared. But that whole scam hinged on trust. My guest today is Tessi. She lives in Montana but was traveling outside the US. She met a young man and she didn't have any specific reason to not trust him. But he was not someone to be trusted. Let me be honest with you: what worked in marketing a couple of years ago really isn't working anymore. And if you're someone who's still trying to crack that algorithm, who believes your success is entirely governed by the quality of your content, this probably isn't what you want to hear. But it's true. I'm seeing genuinely brilliant coaches burning themselves out creating endless content. Posting multiple times a day. Creating daily reels. Sophisticated carousel posts. Graphics. Jumping on every trend. And they're just not seeing a return on that massive amount of effort. Here's what's really happening: the coaching industry has created this closed shop of engagement. Your amazing content is mostly being seen by other coaches who are also stuck on the same hamster wheel. Not your actual ideal clients. Content Marketing Still Matters (But It's Only One Piece) I'm not saying content doesn't matter. Of course it does. But it's ONE piece of a marketing ecosystem. Your overall marketing strategy needs to be bigger than just a content strategy if you want to build a business that's sustainable for the long haul. Think of it like this: content marketing is the lighthouse - shining out, hoping to attract your ideal clients. But there's another side to that coin, and it's the one thing that's never stopped working. The thing that cannot be hacked, gamified, or outsourced. Relationship marketing. The searchlight piece where you go out and actively build relationships that lead to clients, collaborators, and introducers. Why Everything Changed Just a few years ago, you could post consistently, use the right hashtags, jump on trending audios, and the algorithm would reward you with visibility. More reach meant more engagement, which led to new followers, discovery calls, and sales. I'm not saying it was easy then, but it was more straightforward. More predictable. There was less noise and a hell of a lot less AI-generated crap clogging up everyone's feeds. Now? Complete opposite. The algorithms change every other week. No one knows what's getting prioritised anymore. Platforms are oversaturated. Our attention spans are tiny. And people are absolutely exhausted from posting constantly without seeing results that match their effort. The uncomfortable truth: If your entire marketing strategy is built on content creation and visibility determined by an algorithm, you're building your business on quicksand. What Actually Works: The 80/20 Flip Here's what I want you to think about: how are you spending your marketing energy right now? If you're spending 80% of your time creating content and 20% building relationships, I want you to flip it completely. Spend 20% of your time creating really good content that genuinely reflects who you are and what you believe. Then spend 80% of your time having actual conversations with people. This looks like: Showing up in DMs When someone sends a genuine connection message, reply with substance. Have an actual conversation. Don't automatically dismiss everyone as a pitch-slapper. Leaving thoughtful comments Not just a thumbs up or heart emoji. Actually show you were interested in what they shared. Ask questions. Be curious about them. Following up with people If someone told you a month ago they were working on something, check back in. Ask how it's going. Show them you remember. Show them you actually give a crap. Remembering what matters When you build real relationships, you remember what each other says. You're not just talking about business, you're connecting as humans. The Three Kinds of Relationships to Build As you're building these connections, think about three types of relationships: Potential clients - people who could work with you Potential collaborators - people you could create with or partner with Potential introducers - people who could refer clients to you Not everyone needs to be a direct client. Build a genuine network across all three categories. But Can This Scale? I hear you. You're thinking, "Gill, this sounds lovely, but I can't have individual conversations with everyone. I need something that works at scale." Here's the thing: as a coach selling high-ticket programs, you absolutely need to be having individual conversations with the right people. If you're in scaling mode with more leveraged offers, then yes, use paid advertising to drive enough traffic to override the algorithm. But for mid to high-ticket coaching? Conversations are non-negotiable. It might not be the magic bullet everyone wants, but I'm telling you the truth. Quality Over Quantity. Always. I'd rather have a smaller, deeply engaged audience than a massive following of people who couldn't give a crap about what I do. If you prioritise relationships over algorithms, your business will grow. Maybe not overnight. Not in a viral explosion. But steadily. Sustainably. In a way that feels good to you. That's what we're all after, isn't it? A business that actually works for us. That feels aligned. That doesn't need us to be someone we're not or do things that drain the life out of us. The answer isn't more content. It's more connection. Trust Is Built Through Connection, Not Clever Content This has always been true. It's just that now it's becoming undeniable. Sometimes you find yourself in a situation that you didn't ever expect, and you are faced with a decision that you never thought you'd have to make. Joe was an EMT in New York. He had just finished his evening shift, and he did what he always did after leaving work. He stopped by the local Dunkin' Donuts for his regular nightly coffee. But this time was a little different – he happened to be carrying his newly acquired carbon monoxide detector with him. When he entered the store, that detector started sounding an alarm. But Joe was skeptical. There was only one employee working at this late hour, and Joe asked her if she felt okay. The donut worker said she felt fine, so Joe thought that the detector might be malfunctioning. And he could have just forgotten about it at that point. But he made the decision to double check. He reset that alarm, and got permission to go back and inspect the area near the ovens. Sure enough, this time the detector confirmed dangerous levels of carbon monoxide – and it was all throughout the store. Joe quickly evacuated the premises and contacted the proper authorities. The decision he made, just on instinct, probably saved the life of that employee. My guest today is Lemon – yes, just like the fruit. And you'll hear how she got that nickname. Lemon was suddenly and unexpectedly put in a place of making a life-changing decision. And she had to do that while she was at home, and her house was on fire.
