On this week’s Haaretz Podcast, guest host Joshua Leifer talks to Pnina Pfeuffer, a liberal, feminist ultra-Orthodox social activist. The Jerusalem-based Pfeuffer, CEO of the New Haredim, recently petitioned against a Knesset bill that would permit gender-segregated study tracks for master's and doctoral degrees in Israeli academic institutions. Pfeuffer represents a growing minority inside the Israeli ultra-Orthodox public that is interested in “full citizenship, with full obligations and rights” in the Jewish State. This is a public that wants the Israeli government to enforce the military draft on Haredim and teach math and English in Haredi schools, instead of continuing the de facto Haredi autonomy in which many Israeli rules and norms are absent. According to Pfeuffer, the Haredi community reflects Israel as a whole, and younger Haredim - like their secular and religious Zionist counterparts - are radicalizing, and are more right wing than their parents. Some, as Leifer notes, are part of a “far-right Haredi street movement that is in the Ben-Gvir camp or even more right wing.” Addressing the American Jewish community, Pfeuffer asks that those giving money to Israeli causes “educate themselves” about who they are supporting, “because a lot of liberal funding and good intentions” end up promoting gender segregation and far-right politics. She is overreacting. Teenagers are emotional. She will grow out of it.“But I knew the difference between dramatic and drowning.”The Concussion That Changed EverythingThen came the concussion — a head injury that altered the entire landscape of her daughter's health. Jennifer watched her struggle to think clearly, to regulate her emotions, to simply feel like herself again.What many families don't know — and what Jennifer now teaches others — is that head injuries alter brain chemistry in ways that even medical professionals routinely underestimate. When you add hormonal changes and a nervous system already running on overload, the result is a storm that looks invisible from the outside. Jennifer could see it clearly. She asked for help. She was told to wait.Hormones, emotional sensitivity, and brain trauma created a crisis that no one in the medical system would acknowledge with the urgency it deserved.Still no safety plan. No immediate intervention. No one who treated her mother's instinct as data worth acting on.The First AttemptThe day her daughter attempted suicide for the first time was the day Jennifer's world permanently bent.Emergency room. Christchurch's new stadium has put its stamp on the city, pumping $21 million into the economy in just 60 days. One NZ Stadium was forecast to generate $50 million in a year. The project was also completed six weeks early and $26 million under budget. Venues Otautahi chief executive Caroline Harvie-Teare told Mike Hosking they're absolutely flying – it's well beyond what they had forecast. She says things will flatten off a bit now that Super Rugby Pacific is over, but they have a really strong event pipeline, so those numbers are going to continue. This week, we're spending time with Melvin James Kaminsky, better known to the universe as comedy icon and director Mel Brooks! After lampooning westerns, monster movies, and world history, Brooks turned his signature sense of humor to the cinematic sci-fi outings of Star Wars, Alien, 2001, and Planet of the Apes. With an all-star cast including Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, the film was born from a gentleman's agreement between Brooks and Star Wars creator George Lucas. In return for certain concessions (rule number one: no merchandising) from Brooks, Lucas agreed to handle some of the more technical aspects of the film through his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic. The result was a cult hit, almost as beloved as the properties it parodies. Josh drops a chopstick at a restaurant and, without thinking, flags down the waiter for a new one. Dion and Christian are baffled. To them, you pick it up, you wipe it, and then you keep eating. To Josh, that's grub behaviour! We try to work out where the line is between sensible hygiene and prissy fussing, and whether wiping a fork on your t-shirt actually does anything. Then Christian gets pulled up over a request he made in a work meeting: He asked people to turn their cameras on. We try and establish when the camera-off culture took hold, and whether eating during a meeting is a fair play or rudeness of the highest order. Plus: would you rather eat a Dorito in its current form, or shaped like a Pringle and stacked in a tube? Christian thinks Pringles have figured something out the rest of the industry hasn't.
