As the 2024 recipient of the Betty Jean Jones Award, Ann Folino White, associate professor of theatre studies at Michigan State University, joins the ranks of a select group of scholars honored by this prestigious national award for excellence in teaching and mentorship in theatre. Presented by the American Theatre and Drama Society, or ATDS, an international body of scholars dedicated to the study of theatre, performance, and drama across the Americas, the Betty Jean Jones Award signifies the profound influence Folino White has made on her students, colleagues, and the broader academic and theatre communities. The honor is more than just a recognition of her accomplishments – it is a validation of her lifelong commitment to inclusivity, impactful mentorship, and the study of theatre. Conversation Highlights: (1:05) - Congratulations! Tell us about ATDS and this award.  (2:29) – Tell us about your background and Spartan pedigree. (3:50) - Your work is distinguished by your commitment to dismantling the narratives that have long dominated theatre education. Why and how did you overhaul the theatre curriculum? (8:08) - You're based in the Theatre Department, but you're involved all over campus. Talk about your role as chair of the President's Advisory Committee on Disabilities Issues at MSU and the cool progress at Spartan Stadium you played a role in. (11:48) - Why do you love teaching and mentoring and promoting curiosity and collaboration? (14:59) - Talk about the book you're working on about Actors' Equity Association, the union that represents professional actors in the United States. What is Actors' Equity and how does the book explore acting as work and unionized labor, a concept you believe is often misunderstood and ignored. (19:42) - How have you seen students change over the 15+ years you've been teaching at MSU? (22:11) - What challenges and opportunities await your students in whatever field the enter, and what are those facing current actors around the world? Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

John Mayer – actor, director, and chair of the Theatre Department at Cal State Stanislaus – has written Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago: In Their Own Words, the (so far) definitive chronicle of Chicago's groundbreaking theatre ensemble. A high school friend of two of the company's founders – Gary Sinise and Jeff Perry – John interviewed dozens of artists and administrators who were instrumental in Steppenwolf's evolution, and reveals such tidbits as Sinise's early fundraising efforts (which involve a hubcap); the greatest summation of Steppenwolf ever; shout-outs to amazing influential teachers; what an MFA really gives you; tensions between art and commerce; memories of John Malkovich's landmark production of Balm In Gilead; and, most importantly, how passion, chutzpah, drive, and the ability to adapt and change creates long-term artistry. Radical Transformational Leadership: What does this imply? Guest Speakers: Therese Adams and Vernice MillerArtists for EquityWe invite you to a discussion with Therese Adams and Vernice Miller.Therese Adams and Vernice Miller invite artists and all of us to use the Arts for transforming the inequities in the world today. They invite us to explore how the arts can open our hearts to equity, dignity, and compassion while revealing unfair systems and cultural norms and inspire everyday citizens to step into action. Due to pandemic, murder of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, and the MeToo movement, there is an opening in our collective imaginations.Therese shares: I see people deeply troubled by the suffering around them and looking for solutions and are called to act. And because of COVID19, people are dealing with sickness and loss of job, and concerns about the future. The disparities in the quality of our life, especially for people of color, in terms of housing, education, job opportunities and healthcare availability are so apparent. We need Radical Transformational Leadership now at this opening, during this time of collective yearning for equity and dignity for all so that we do not go back to the way we were, which will happen if we do not address the inequitable systems so everyone thrives. As artists, Therese and Vernice will share the journeys of their lives --using the tools of the theatre and dance to find freedoms around complicated issues. They will share their drive to radically contribute to creating a post privilege world, and their evolving understanding of how to dismantle the systems that continually feed global injustices.Vernice shares: my exposure to Monica and her ideas of applying conscious full-spectrum responses put forth in Radical Transformational Leadership has afforded me a clarity of how to harness my inner wisdom, to shift systems for the betterment of all. It is this exposure that has shifted my pedagogical approach from not just what I teach but how. I now consciously curate spaces calling others to source their inner values and to apply them without feeling moralistic. Today whether in the role of artist, teacher, sister, or friend I am charged with making use of the various tools of the theatre and RTL to decolonize the behavior in myself and others to create an equitable, just and fair world where all can live with dignity.Guest: Therese Adams: For over 20 years, Therese Adams has held nonprofit leadership positions working in Santa Cruz, California as an executive director, fund development consultant, development director, and community organizer. Since 2014, Therese has practiced Leadership for Community Transformation with Dr. Monica Sharma and has supported the training of hundreds of leaders in Santa Cruz County and the Bay Area of California as a practitioner coach. In her work with nonprofits, she has incorporated the Conscious Full Spectrum Response and Radical Transformational Leadership to promote equity and generosity to transform the current nonprofit fund development and philanthropy practices to create sustainable change.Since 2012, Therese has worked on the issues of homelessness as Community Organizer with the United Way of Santa Cruz County and Development Director at Pajaro Valley Shelter Services. Currently, she is the Executive Director of the Santa Cruz affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), using the Conscious Full Spectrum Response to stop stigma and to improve the treatment for those with mental health conditions. Originally from Los Angeles, Therese moved to Santa Cruz to receive her BA in Theatre Arts from UC Santa Cruz. For several decades, she was the Director of Moving and Storage Performance Company and was the SPECTRA Arts Coordinator and Instructor for Cultural Council of Santa Cruz, County working to ensure every school in the county had arts programming. To contact Therese Adams please email her at seeds.therese@gmail.comGuest: Vernice Miller is an international theatre artist with a life-long mission to investigate, uncover and share the soul of performance. In addition to being an award-winning actor, she is an educator, director, writer, and social justice activist. Born in Jamaica, Miller has worked in London, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, France, Ukraine, Poland, Slovenia and most recently South Africa. In the U.S. she is an adjunct lecturer and mainstage director at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her work on the world stage includes long-term collaborations with jazz musician, Wynton Marsalis on Eatonville, a Zora Neal Hurston Project, and with directing anthropologist, Dr. Omotayo Jolaosho’s Three Women (Break the Silence). The theatrical performance of Three Women began at the Market Theater Laboratory in Johannesburg then toured underserved communities throughout South Africa. Its performers address what it means to find one’s voice amidst gendered repression and urge us to “break the silence” regarding women’s bodily and sexual autonomy.Vernice Miller and Joann Yarrow co-founded A Laboratory for Actor Training Experimental Theatre Company (ALATetc) as a destination to evolve the work they began with Roberta Carreri at Eugenio Barba's Odin Teatret in Denmark. ALATetc is now a collective of artists and activists who create work for the stage that provokes dialogue, inspires action, and heightens awareness of personal ethics. ALATetc is in residency in the Theatre Department at John Jay College, offering a rigorous actor training technique to students and professionals alike. With Kobi Skolnick, Vernice Miller offers training to support emerging and established leaders, generating positive and sustained impact in the communities and organizations. Vernice Miller collaborates with Dr. Monica Sharma; and now, along with her and Therese Adams, is engaged in developing RTLArts. RTLArts is a conscious full spectrum response to using the arts as a lever for challenging systems and cultures that do not support our wellbeing; and instead offer compassionate, courageous alternatives for personal and planetary transformation. vernicem@hotmail.comLearn more about Dr. Monica here: www.radicallytransform.org

I'll start with Stu: how did the idea for this play come about? Krieger: The whole reason "At the Pass" came into existence is in late 2017 we were in a faculty meeting and we always have to talk about our season, we do three main stage productions a year, in addition to a student-written film festival, play festival, and a graduate play festival. So, we're constantly in some form of production all year long. So we plan our season more

We were thrilled to have Erica Daniels Strater join us in the Booth, starting our next 100 episodes off in style! She has been an agent, casting director, Associate Artistic Director, president, and now Executive Director. All at top-flight companies. Erica has so many dear friends in the Chicago theatre community. She helped us all out when we were with small companies who needed casting help and couldn't afford our own casting directors. Her email response would come back pronto with a list of really great suggestions for a role. Early in her career, she joined her close friend and mentor, Martha Lavey, in choosing to make the effort to pay attention to smaller companies and emerging talents and to lend a hand up. A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Performance Studies, she studied with an amazing group of artists, including Martha Lavey, Frank Galati, Mary Zimmerman and Dwight Conquergood. When she graduated and was planning to start auditioning, Erica broker her foot. While she was recuperating, she thought maybe she could help out in a casting director's office. She worked in Jane Brody's office, then Shirley Hamilton's, two of the best casting people in Chicago. Then, after an exciting stint as the Theatre Department coordinator at William Morris in New York, she went to work for Steppenwolf as their in-house casting director. She was then promoted to Associate Artistic Director and did a wonderful job in that capacity while continuing to do their casting. She is providing great leadership at Victory Gardens, collaborating with her partner, Artistic Director Chay Yew. Erica is eloquent about Victory Gardens' mission to "be a leader in developing and producing new work and cultivating an inclusive theater community." We have seen so many marvelous productions there, most recently, Tiny Beautiful Things. Erica and Chay were listed as #1! in New City Stages' feature: Players 2019: The Fifty People Who Really Perform for Chicago.. Gary talks to Erica about getting her start in the business, what she looks for in an actor, the audition process, working with directors to cast just the right actor for the role, and what challenges an Executive Director of a Tony Award-winning Chicago off-loop theatre faces on a daily basis. You'll find Erica to be eloquent and forthright in her responses. Just a joy to have as a guest in the Booth. Kiss of Death: Franco Zeffirelli, Italian director with a penchant for excess. Renowned for his extravagantly romantic opera productions, immensely popular film versions of Shakespeare and an active and sometimes controversial social life. Wiki tells us he was one of the only living people traceably consanguineous with Leonardo da Vinci. Mr. Zeffirelli was 96.

Episodes that will get you thinking toward the new year. I know, I know, how can you think about January when the holidays haven't even happened yet? Back in August I talked to teacher Jeff Pinksy about cross-curricular material he was about to take into the drama classroom. So let's dive into the interview! Lindsay: Okay. So, I am really thrilled for today's conversation. I am talking to Jeff Pinsky. Hello, Jeff! Jeff: Hi, Lindsay! Lindsay: How's it going? Jeff: I am doing very, very well this summer. How are you? Lindsay: Ah, pretty good, pretty busy. But, you know, it's better to be busy than not, I think. Jeff: It is, what with Drama Teacher Academy launching as of Wednesday and everything. Lindsay: Aww! Nice plug there! I love it. I love it. I didn't even say that. Jeff: Happy to shell for you! Lindsay: Jeff, tell everybody where in the world you are. Jeff: Right now, I'm in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and I teach at Beaconsfield High School which is about ten minutes from where I live right now. Lindsay: Ah, nice close commute. So, how long have you been a Drama teacher? Jeff: I've been teaching Drama exclusively for about eight years now, and this year coming out would be my tenth in the business, but I've been involved in Drama teaching – in one way, shape, or form – for the last, I'd say, maybe fifteen years or so. Since Summer Camp, I started up a program at one of my old Summer Camps. Lindsay: Ah, awesome, and what drives you specifically to teaching Drama? You know, as opposed to performing or backstage or what. Jeff: Because I get to go to work every single day and it doesn't even feel like work. I mean, one of the best advice I ever got is that, if you truly have a job that you love, then you never have to work a single day in your life. And so, I loved the fact that I'm surrounded by creativity and my job is to teach kids how to channel that creativity and to turn all these crazy ideas bouncing around their head and funnel it into stories and characters and moments and scenes and plays and the works, and I love it. No two days are alike and that's probably the best part of my job; I really don't fall into any kind of routine as far as that goes. Lindsay: Well, that enthusiasm must help when you have students in your class who maybe aren't so engaged with Drama. Because we all have those classes, right? Where you've got the students who love and then the students who aren't so excited. How do you deal with those kids?
