To celebrate 15 years of Koya — the quietly iconic udon bar that helped change the way London eats — we're joined by its founders: John Devitt and Shuko Oda.From early-morning queues to feet-kneaded noodles, we go behind the steam with the pair who brought serious broth and bounce to Soho. Shuko shares how a childhood in Japan shaped her savoury cravings, how miso soup became her first solo dish, and how Tokyo's obsessive Italian food scene first lured her into the kitchen.John reflects on what it took to build Koya as an outsider to the restaurant world, the challenges of scaling a niche, noodle-focused concept, and how a love of good service has shaped the way Koya welcomes people in. We hear about their early trips to Japan, the now-legendary specials board, and the tightrope walk of keeping things consistent while always evolving. We talk burnt soy wings, kimchi holidays, and what it means to work in restaurants where holidays don't exist — plus what makes a good noodle, how Koya scaled without losing its soul, and why Shuko still finds comfort in the simplest rice ball. It's a portrait of a restaurant that's quietly influenced a generation — and the story of two people who put in the hours, trusted their instincts, and let the food do the talking.----------Please leave us a great rating and a comment and share it with your friends - it really helps us grow as a show.If you're in the industry and are looking for the greatest POS system in the world than look no further as Blinq are tearing up the rulebook—no long-term contracts, no hidden fees, and no per-device charges. In this podcast episode, The Crucial Role of Medical Evidence In Forensic Cases, Teresa Devitt-Lynch, a forensic nurse and sexual assault nurse examiner, will take you into the intricacies of murder and assault cases. She begins by explaining some of the phrases we typically hear about such cases. Intent, recklessness, and negligence characterize different levels of seriousness in a crime, and all have sublevels of severity. Teresa elaborates on why circumstantial evidence can be enough for a conviction. If it's strong and there's enough of it, it can lead the jury to convict. Medical evidence can play a role in this kind of conviction. She also deconstructs the phrases familiar to many murder-mystery readers: motive, means, and opportunity. See if you can guess the primary motives for murder. The answer is in the podcast. She emphasizes that while a nurse expert can't prove who perpetrated a crime, they can determine who could not have done so. Teresa illustrates this with several examples. She adds that a nurse expert can also contribute information through the analysis of forensic evidence. You will enjoy this in-depth description of how murder and assault cases are analyzed and what critical factors lead to conviction or acquittal. Here's What to Expect from the Podcast: The Crucial Role of Medical Evidence In Forensic Cases with Teresa Devitt Lynch What are the three basic elements a prosecutor has to prove for a conviction? How does a prosecutor establish intent? What is the value of circumstantial evidence? What are the primary motives for murder? What role can a medical expert play in analyzing evidence? Murder mystery fans, this podcast is for you. If you thought that only a forensic pathologist could determine whether a death was suicide or homicide, you'll now hear from Teresa Devitt-Lynch, a board-certified advanced forensic nurse. She begins by emphasizing the fact that all physical evidence must be carefully analyzed. In addition, it's important to evaluate the victim's state of mind. Were previous suicide attempts made? Did the person suffer from chronic depression? These factors help to make a determination. Other specialists may be called in, such as mechanical engineers who determine logistics in a death caused by a fall. Logistics also play a key role in gunshot and stabbing incidents. Drowning incidents present a particular challenge since they may be accidental, suicide, or homicide. When cars are involved, an additional mechanical determination may be needed. Finally, an expert needs to determine whether an individual hung himself or herself or if the incident was carefully staged. If you find yourself fascinated by the material in this podcast, you may want to consider investigating a career path you may not have previously known existed. At the very least, you'll find that your murder mystery reading will be enhanced by this intriguing information. Here's What to Expect from the Podcast: Was It Murder or Suicide? with Teresa Devitt Lynch What forms of physical evidence can help determine whether the death was suicide or homicide? What psychological factors in the victim's history can contribute to a determination? How can gunshot wounds be analyzed? How can you determine whether knife wounds are self-inflicted or caused by another person? What distinguishes suicide from homicide or accidental death in a drowning incident? How can you determine whether a person hung himself or was the victim of a staged hanging? What makes a species a species? Aristotle answered the species question by positing unchanging essences, properties that all and only members of a species shared. Individuals belonged to a species by possessing this essence. Biologists and philosophers of biology today are either not essentialists at all, or if they are think there are essences they are relational, historical properties.  In his provocative book Biological Essentialism (Oxford UP, 2023), Michael Devitt argues for a new form of biological essentialism in which intrinsic essences, probably largely genetic properties, are part of what tie species together and that the actual explanatory practices of biologists commit them to this view. Devitt, who is distinguished professor of philosophy, emeritus, at CUNY Graduate Center, responds to many philosophers critical of his position, and applies his essentialism to debates about race realism and anti-realism. Intro  Rebecca Devitt CEO and Founder of How do I homeschool. Bec found so much success with homeschooling, that she became interested in promoting home education to others as a better way to educate children. Her journey down this blogging road started in 2013 when I wrote a 16,000-word dissertation on homeschooling for one of her friends who is now homeschooling! She then published Why on Earth Homeschool in 2017. After this, she launched the howdoihomeschool.com website in 2018 and shortly after launched the YouTube Channel called How Do I Homeschool.    Over the years, she has spent a tremendous amount of time studying classical, Charlotte Mason, and other educational methods and has thrown herself into analyzing curriculum options to present her readers with great options that suit their worldview and chosen educational methods.    Rebecca loves supporting new homeschooling parents her prayer is that these efforts will one day be acknowledged before God when he says, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.'  Top three takeaways  You won't be always teaching children. They learn how to learn at home, so end up homeschooling themselves in the later years.  Homeschooling can be fun and joyful, but sometimes we don't know how to get it there. Rebecca's course aims to fill that gap so parents don't have to spend years making mistakes.  Homeschooling takes time and love to do well. If you have plenty of that, it's hard to go wrong.  Call to Action  Resources  Home Educators Academy   Learn to homeschool your children with confidence! This course is launching in October 2022. What Goes Up
Irrational Exuberance Is Dying (Again)

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan famously used the phrase “irrational exuberance” to describe the euphoric investor sentiment that sent tech stocks soaring in the late 1990s. And everyone knows what happened next, when that exuberance wore off. Now, history is repeating itself when it comes to some of the disruptive and innovative companies that were market darlings during the lockdown phase of the pandemic, but have since been clobbered by a “dose of realism,” according to Aoifinn Devitt, chief investment officer at Moneta Group Investment Advisors. Devitt joined this week's “What Goes Up” podcast to discuss this and other hot topics in markets, such as inflation, rates and the outlook for consumer spending. It's not all bad news for the disrupters of the corporate world, however. They're still darlings of venture capital markets and, she adds, “I don't think that our fascination and our obsession with innovation is likely to go away anytime soon.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
