Much has been discussed about the effects of COVID-19 on anyone from the elderly to those with pre-existing conditions. But what about the children, and how about the spread of asymptomatic cases? Dr. Rob McGregor is the chief medical officer at Akron Children’s Hospital, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to touch on all of those subjects, including the possibility of vaccinating children, from teens to even babies down the road. Dr. McGregor says they are seeing good news with not only the vaccine rollout, but the numbers of cases overall. Part of that good news is what little spread of the virus that has occurred in school buildings and sporting events. On the topic of asymptomatic cases, he says the only way for a parent to know if his or her child is infected is to get tested. Dr. McGregor talked more about the studies of inoculation in children. One of the studies has to do with using the same brands of the vaccine, just with smaller doses spread out over multiple trials.

COVID-19 has been a bully to the elderly and those with a couple to several comorbidities. But as there is a push to get students back in the classrooms, how dangerous is not only the main coronavirus that has been present for over a year for them, but the other variants that have popped up? Dr. John Bauer is medical director of medical prevention and control at Akron Children’s Hospital, and he spoke of the concerns he and his colleagues have seen with the variant in children. Though the virus has not been as dangerous towards the children, Dr. Bauer says they have seen an increase in transmission with the variants, as well as the post-infection symptoms they can experience down the road. Dr. Bauer believes masking and social distancing should continue in the fight against transmission.

Plenty has been discussed about the effects of COVID-19 with the elderly and infirmed, but what about the children and teenagers? Dr. Rob McGregor is the chief medical officer at Akron Children’s Hospital, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to discuss the findings medical professionals are seeing with this virus in kids. Total, Dr. McGregor says Akron Children’s Hospital has only admitted 28 kids with COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, though there have been a number of children who have been symptomatic yet weren’t sick enough to go see their doctor. Dr. McGregor warned the listeners about Halloween parties, gatherings, and even trick-or-treating, which could lead to an even more increased spread through children. He feels kids will still need to wear a mask even if they are wearing a Halloween mask.
