In this presentation Allanah King describes how she has used QR codes with her class of Year Four children. She also shares a number of other uses of QR Codes that may be useful in teaching and communicating with the wider community. The ideas in the presentation came from a series of blog posts that Allanah wrote over a series of months in the middle of 2011. All of the links she mentions in the presentation are hyperlinked on those blog posts. Please visit Allanah’s blog and suggest other ways you have used QR codes in your classroom. Allanah King’s presentation shows some of the things she does with ICT in her Year Four classroom in a small New Zealand school. This video was made to support the K12 Online 2010 Conference in the strand, A Week in the Classroom.
It's great to be back podcasting agin after a long break, during which I have left the classroom. However this now gives me more time to look at how technology is used in education and reflect on its use from outside. This means I don't have the usual distractions that come with a class of 8 year olds!!! This new podcast looks at : Animoto in education (http://biz.animoto.com/education/overview.html) - thanks to Ewan McIntosh ( http://edu.blogs.com/edublogs/)for the blog post on this.( http://edu.blogs.com/edublogs/2008/04/animoto-for-edu.html ) Twitter(http://twitter.com/) using Twitterrific ( http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific) and Twhirl (http://www.twhirl.org/) Mentioned also were : Allanah King (http://allanahk.edublogs.org/) an Adobe Educator now as well - congratulations AK and enjoy the USA when you visit. On Tuesday 17th July at 8.30 pm UK time began a web 2.0 Speed Dating style experience for a group oh High School teachers in New York, on a 3 day course with Sheryl Nussbaum Beach discussing the use of New Technologies in Education. Sheryl had in advance gathered together a group of Web 2.0 educationalists from around the world ( and Wales!!!!) - in the firing line were: Jen Wagner - http://www.technospud.com/blog/ Lisa Durff - http://durffsblog.blogspot.com/ Welsey Fryer - http://www.speedofcreativity.org/ John Pederson - http://pedersondesigns.com/ Allanah King - http://allanahk.edublogs.org/ Jane Nicholls - http://ictucan.blogspot.com/ Jason Hando - http://mylearningspace.ning.com/profile/jhando and myself http://ddraig-goch.blogspot.com/ The idea was that for their first day the teachers had been investigating the new tools and then got to speak to teachers already using them in classes, with kids. ( how I wish this had existed when I started!!). Each of us was on a computer around the room on a 1 to 1 Gizmo call, so that we could have a discussion with the people at the table ( sadly some had to IM due to problems in New York)... it was an excellent experience I certainly enjoyed it ( so apologies for my talking far too much and not letting others geta word in !!!!!). Thanks hugely to the excellent and 'awesome' Sheryl for all of her work in getting this together. http://www.21stcenturycollaborative.com/ I look forward to more of these experiences and maybe just maybe a real Life f2f sometime soon with blogging/ podcasting buddies.... a meet up at NECC next year would be fabulous if we could arrange it guys and girls!!??
Following a discussion with Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and a chat with Allanah King my ramble is about the possibility of opening up a new area of study i.e. K-8
Sitting at home in Wales on Thursday evening at about 9.15pm I had a skype message from my pal Allanah King. Allanah is at an e-learning conference in Rotorua New Zealand, where one of their keynote speakers is David Warlick. Allanah was sitting in on David's talk on RSS, Aggregators and Social Networking here is what David had to say to his audience - until either the link or the power went from New Zealand... enjoy hopefully with David's permission - it was such a one off that I couldn't resist the opportunity to podcast this piece.
This was a recorded conversation with Allanah King as she spoke to a group of teachers at a conference in Rotorua New Zealand.
On Wednesday 6th December at 9.30 am (UK time) - 10.30pm (NZ time) we sat down as a class to have a chat with Allanah King in New Zealand. The skype link worked perfectly and we were easily able to hear each other. We spent 25 minutes quizzing Miss on New Zealand and her school - it was great fun for us, we hope that it wasn't too stressful the other end!!! We learnt a great deal about the country of New Zealand and its many sheep, in addition to learning more about Appleby School. This coming week on Tuesday evening for us (Wednesday morning in the other side of the World) we are planning to talk directly to our pen pals as they begin their school day - how cool is that. It will certainly be the chance for us to catch up with all of the news from both classes and both countries. Both classes are really looking forward to it - so watch this space...
