What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, made better by Jerry Goldsmith's score and the killer hits of Michael Sembello and Peter Gabriel. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to really dig into a couple of cues from the “Gremlins” score and dish about music theory of it all as well.We first get into the mega madness with the Sembello track. Played during the bar scene, the uptempo dance song set the stage for the “Maniac”-like antics of the dancing green creature. The film also features a track by Quarterflash and Darlene Love's epically classic “Christmas.”Goldsmith's penchant for atonality shines forth in the frantic cue ‘No Santa Claus.' The Stravinsky-esque eighths are composed of dueling tritones E-Bb and D-Ab and immediately transition to alternating bars of 5/8 and 7/8. Subsequently, all this segues quite nicely into held sonorities overlaid with “Silent Night” as Kate begins her tale of holiday woe. Talk about harmonization!Altered mystic chord? Check. Catchy mogwai theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if there's 7 different types! Amanda Clawson and her Grade 4 students recently won a contest naming Hancock Health's new da Vinci 5 surgical system robot.The Sugar Creek Elementary teacher said, “I just went for it, and the kids were excited about it. I didn't really think anything would come of it or that we would win because the whole county could enter, but it was just exciting for the kids to win.”The robot, one of 1,700 in the country, is used in surgeries for hernias, gallbladder and uterine-related issues. Other Indianapolis-area hospitals also have the technology that allows patients to have minimally invasive procedures, faster healing and shorter downtimes.Student Lili Appleget said, “There's like little microscopes, and it'll poke little holes so it can get to what it needs to get to.”Appleget who came up with the idea to name it “Gizmo.” The fourth graders voted on the name and submitted it for the contest. Lili thinks the name will make kids comfortable when they are in the hospital, and that it's easy to pronounce.Clawson's class got to take a trip to the hospital to learn how the robot works. For the teacher, the experience was not just about winning, but also about giving her students a chance to see the impact of their efforts and learn that they can be a part of something much bigger than themselves. “Especially to have them have important community members recognize their writing and pay attention to their writing. They don't get that very often.”The teacher hopes to enter future classes in similar competitions to show her students that they have a powerful voice in science, technology, and beyond. “It was fun, engaging. It got the kids to write more. Accordingly, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary make the trek to Bethlehem, their ancestral home. Simultaneously the Magi follow a star to Bethlehem in search of a new king. The trio meet the Holy Family and journey with them to the same town. That night they see the Angel's proclamation of great joy, and follow some shepherds to the inn where Jesus was born. They also foil Herod's plot to have the Magi followed and the child killed. Having saved the day, they return to their time and celebrate Christmas properly.An inn with no room? Check. Since we're in the holiday season, and we're in the middle of our 1980s season, it seemed like the perfect time to re-release the SpielbergPod episode Becky and I recorded on Joe Dante's horror comedy classic, 'Gremlins'. And this episode was recorded all the way back in 2015 (it was the first podcast I recorded over the internet, since Becky lived in Canada at the time of record). One thing I would note, having listened back to this yesterday, when it comes to the recast section it may sound like we're misgendering / deadnaming Suzy Izzard, but, again, that is down to this being recorded back in 2015, prior to us having knowledge of Izzard's gender identity.

Welcome to the ninth day of doctrine with a gift of a Gadget or a Gizmo. Artificial intelligence and large language models are important for the doctrine community to understand and use. In today's episode, Major Scott McMahan from CADD's Operational Level Doctrine Division discusses the conversations within the doctrine community and how doctrine authors can use these tools. Note that this conversation is a snapshot in time and changes to the Army-approved large language model, CamoGPT, are already well underway. Each fall, the doctrine community comes together for the Doctrine Developers Forum (DDF). At this year's DDF, we invited doctrine authors to share what they are working on. We bring these conversations to you in the 12 Days of Doctrine.

The scenes set at the trade show attended by Rand Petlzer (Hoyt Axton) feature brief appearances by Spielberg, composer Jerry Goldsmith, and Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. Legendary animation director Chuck Jones even appears as Billy's artist friend in an early bar scene. Although it is not visible, "Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf", by Joe Dante, Sr. is on Billy's nightstand. Director Joe Dante, Jr. said his father criticized him for not making the title more visible. At the movie's end, Gizmo pops the window blind to expose Stripe to the sunlight. The original edit featured Gizmo lifting the shade, then Billy. Again, Spielberg suggested to Dante that the film show Gizmo to be more of the hero of the story than Billy. Dante agreed and the scene was edited to clearly show it was Gizmo that stopped Stripe. Today we hit up a worthy modern Christmas classic that was very formidable to our youth and introduced to us two absolute smokeshows that would influence our growth into maturity. We're talking about Gizmo and Phoebe Cates. We hit up Joe Dante last Halloween season so let us discuss his iconic 1984 Christmas horror-comedy “GREMLINS” starring Zach Gilligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton. Mogwai's are extremely cute (don't look up what that word means in Cantonese) but they come with very strict rules that seem inevitable to be broken. Wet em and they multiply. Feed them after midnight Eastern U.S. standard time and they will transform into these little green maniacs that are annoying, sometimes deadly but often very funny. They're a very funny plague but could also destroy entire civilizations. Seriously, why aren't we culling these Mogwai dudes? I know they're cute as hell but the risks are too great. They do like movies though. That's a big plus with these guys. If only we could get one on the show.
