How often do you finally realize what you want to say hours, days, months, or even years after a misunderstanding or disagreement? Some people need time to process, but it's easy to think you've missed your chance once the moment has passed. Learning how to have hard conversations has changed my life more than almost anything else, and I've noticed a rule many of us follow without ever questioning it: after enough time passes, you're no longer allowed to bring something up. In this episode, I'm unpacking where that rule came from, who it benefits, and the rule I've replaced it with so more women can stop carrying unresolved hurt alone and start saying what they need to say. Here's what I cover:How so many of the rules we live by were just made up and never questionedWhat I call a “crockpot brain” and why some people need more time to respondTwo questions to help you decide if something still needs to be addressedThe steps to starting a hard conversation, no matter how much time has passedA conversation that allowed me to resolve my hurt after carrying it for four yearsJoin me LIVE for a free workshop on June 11 at 9am PT or June 24th at 1pm PT. What if the most powerful tool to change your life has been right under your nose this whole time — literally? This guest spent his twenties as a high-stress TV producer in New York. On paper, life looked great. Inside, he felt empty and burned out. Getting fired became his turning point. Yoga, meditation, and breathwork pulled him out, and he built a career leading wellness retreats around the world. Now in his 40s, he shares an honest story about change. After a serious back injury forced him to stop teaching yoga, he had to slow down, heal, and rethink everything. He talks about dropping his "masks," saying no to what no longer serves him, and treating your time and energy like a careful investment. His big message is simple: real change starts inside you. Feeling safe in your own body comes first. The breath is the doorway. You don't need apps or gadgets — just a few quiet minutes a day.He also explains why you can't force others to change, and why even difficult people teach us something. The episode ends with a short, calming breathwork practice you can follow along with.Episode Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:03:04 Who Is the Guest00:08:29 Reflecting on Change and Evolution00:12:32 The Psychology of Aging00:14:14 Energy as an Investment Strategy00:18:19 Instagram, Dopamine, and Earning Rest00:23:45 Swapping Habits Instead of Quitting00:26:38 Lessons From Retreats: Self-Limiting Beliefs00:28:02 Why Feeling Safe Comes First00:31:06 The Excuse of "No Time"00:36:55 The Guest's North Star00:38:11 Breathwork: The Tool Under Your Nose00:47:49 Simplicity Over Data and Gadgets00:48:55 A Renaissance? Casting is finally underway for a new James Bond. But why has it taken five years to even begin the search? Since Daniel Craig retired as Bond in 2021, there have been reports of a behind-the-scenes David and Goliath battle between the family business which has held creative control of the franchise since the 1960s and its new owners, Amazon. It is now up to Jeff Bezos's tech giant to decide who will play 007 – and how to run the series. In an era when Hollywood studios are desperate to eke out every last dollar from movie franchises, can James Bond retain its mystique and appeal to a new generation of cinema goers? Don't have enough time or money to invest in real estate? These are, by far, the two most common roadblocks for new investors. Today's guest didn't let them stop her. Instead, she used creative means to find and fund real estate deals without much free time or a big bank account. If you follow her blueprint, you'll be able to do the same! Welcome back to the Real Estate Rookie podcast! Beth Decler is a homeschooling mother of eight—yes, eight—children, but somehow, some way, she's also making time for real estate investing. In fact, she and her husband have done five real estate deals and made six-figure profits with the live-in flip strategy, all while running their own on-farm business. In this episode, Beth shows you how to find off-market properties (without cold calling), bypass the banks with seller financing, and save thousands in taxes. Now that Beth has used the power of real estate to scale up to her “forever” home, she's eyeing another investing strategy—one that's less hands-on but will allow her to keep growing her net worth! In This Episode We Cover How this investing mom is doing six-figure flips (while raising eight kids!) Living With Cystic Fibrosis
No Time to Wait: Beth Vanstone's Fight for Access via Advocacy

Living With Cystic Fibrosis

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2026 45:36

A mother, advocate and one woman's global fight for access. Beth Vanstone is working to ensure rare disease patients don't have to wait for the treatments they need to survive. Sometimes the most powerful friendships begin in the most unexpected places.  Beth Vanstone and I first connected on social media. At the time, we were simply two moms navigating the complicated, emotional, and relentless world of cystic fibrosis. But eventually the online messages turned into something more meaningful. Then, Beth attended one of The Bonnell Foundation's Gala events. That's when we finally met in person.  And from that moment on, we became dear friends.  It's proof that social media, when used for connection and purpose, can build incredible relationships. But what inspires me most about Beth isn't just our friendship. It's her relentless determination. Beth is the mother of Madi, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just eight months old. Suddenly Beth was navigating a healthcare system, researching treatments, learning medical language, and fighting for her daughter's future. Beth didn't stop there. Instead of focusing only on her own family, she chose to fight for every family. Today, Beth is a powerful advocate in Canada and a member of the Ontario Rare Action Group, where she works to improve access to life-saving therapies for people living with rare diseases like Cystic Fibrosis. And the reality she's fighting against is one many people don't understand. Most healthcare systems, not just in Canada but around the world were built to treat common diseases. They weren't designed for rare conditions that affect smaller populations. Because of that, patients with rare diseases often face enormous barriers: long approval timelines, delayed access to medications, and exhausting advocacy battles just to receive treatments that already exist. In some cases, patients wait months — even years — for medications that could dramatically improve or extend their lives. Beth is working to change that. Through her advocacy, she's pushing for reforms that could make a real difference for patients across Canada and beyond: • Faster access to innovative therapies • Improved newborn screening programs • Better diagnostic pathways • Centers of excellence for rare diseases • Removing financial barriers like deductibles that prevent families from accessing public programs And she's also raising an important global conversation. Here in the United States, lawmakers have debated policies like the Most Favored Nation Model, which look to international drug pricing systems like those in Canada and Europe as a model. But Beth reminds us that every system has challenges, and for rare disease patients, those challenges can be life-changing. Because when access to medication is delayed… Access is denied. And that's why advocacy across borders matters. She's not just advocating for her daughter. She's advocating for every patient still waiting for their breakthrough. And today, we're talking about what needs to change and how all of us can help make it happen. Fast forward to baby number two, and Linda walked into that hospital armed with her birth plan, her snacks, her AirPods in, Modern Family queued up, and absolutely zero tolerance for being told what to do. She went from a traumatic, unplanned induction the first time around to bouncing on the ball, eating her favorite foods, requesting an experienced provider to break her waters, and pushing her baby out in 20 minutes. And now? She's 30 weeks pregnant with baby number three!

See what the team at The Successful Bookkeeper has on right now → Ashley Jocic started Florida Keys Bookkeeping at one of the most turbulent moments imaginable: a separation, COVID shutdowns, and a career pivot — all at once. What followed was five years of growing a fully virtual bookkeeping firm while navigating a new marriage, a daughter, an international move to Serbia, and twins. This episode is a masterclass in building something real when life refuses to slow down. Chapters [00:00] Life chaos that sparked the business [04:18] Early career and Bookkeeper Launch [07:04] Finding the first clients [10:40] Newborn, new marriage, slow growth [13:28] Twins force a systemization sprint [18:35] Running a US firm from Serbia [25:11] Building referral relationships [32:10] Plans for intentional growth [40:55] Protecting your work time Starting From a Real Moment Ashley's path into bookkeeping started with her dad. She'd been handling his books and noticed something: "I remember seeing the relief on his face when he knew his bookkeeping and his bills were handled." That moment made her realize bookkeeping is more than data entry — it lifts a genuine mental burden from business owners. Combined with a background in government accounting and a timely refresh through the Bookkeeper Launch course, she had what she needed to start. Growing Slowly — On Purpose Ashley's early client growth was deliberate and unhurried, mostly driven by a professional website and a referral from her father's network. "If someone called me and wanted a bookkeeper, I ended up doing their bookkeeping," she says. There was no aggressive outreach strategy at first — and that was fine. Her constraints as a new stay-at-home mom meant slow, steady growth was the only kind that fit. She and her husband aimed for 20 hours of work per week. Sometimes she hit it. Sometimes she didn't. A Hard Deadline Forces the Right Decisions When Ashley found out she was pregnant with twins, she faced a clear choice: systemize fast or shut down. She chose to systemize. She leaned heavily on Pure Bookkeeping to document and standardize her processes, hired a team member in Serbia she could train before going on leave, and brought on a second person to review that work while she was away. "I did a lot of things a lot quicker than I would have normally because of that constraint, because of that timeline." The firm didn't just survive her maternity leave — it ran smoothly. Virtual-Only as a Filter, Not a Limitation Living in Serbia with a six-hour time difference from the US East Coast might sound like a recipe for client friction. Ashley sees it differently. Being unable to visit offices or meet for coffee filters out clients who aren't ready for fully virtual work — and those tend to be the wrong clients anyway. The right clients, she's found, don't need her physically present. They need her reliable. A CPA who works with one of her clients has since referred additional business to her, which she considers a strong signal: "He liked my work enough to refer me to someone else he was doing taxes for." Protecting Your Work Time Looking back, the one thing Ashley wishes she'd done sooner is treat her work hours as non-negotiable. "I would too easily say, 'Well, okay, I'll work later,'" she reflects. "I had to treat it like a business and not just something that fits in the in-between moments." That mindset shift — from flexible freelancer to firm owner — is something she says took time but made a real difference in how the business runs today. 22 Recommendations, No Time to Wait: Senator David Arnot on Canada's New Antisemitism Report

During the Senate's year-long study on antisemitism, released a week ago on April 21, Senator David Arnot admits to becoming deeply upset when learning some Canadian Jews want to leave the country because they no longer feel safe. The study began in Dec. 2024. During the year, Arnot and his colleagues on the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights heard 44 witnesses over seven meetings. They also received 36 written briefs. It wasn't nearly as extensive a study as one done two years ago on Islamophobia, and the committee had until the end of 2026 to release its findings, but Arnot and his colleagues felt the “clear and present danger” of antisemitism was so serious, they wanted their recommendations for action to come out immediately. “We're not asking for the government to sort of dither around and think about it. There's nothing more to think about. There's a blueprint right now. Implement that blueprint with immediacy,” he says. Aside from asking Canada to restore the now-cancelled position of the special envoy on antisemitism, and create a federal task force on antisemitism, Arnot—a former provincial court judge and longtime Chief of Saskatchewan's Human Rights Commission—believes our education system has failed to produce informed citizens. As a result, he believes young people are more susceptible to misinformation they find online. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, Arnot joins host Ellin Bessner to explain why he is convinced there's no more time to waste to fix “this black mark on Canadian society.” Related links Read the report's findings and get Canadian Jewish leaders' reactions, in The CJN . Hrishikesh Hirway, host of Song Exploder, returns with his first album in fifteen years, In the Last Hour of Light, made under a premise that's almost contradictory for a podcaster built around isolated stems: session players who had never heard the songs, vocals tracked live in the room, no click track, and no overdubs.  The layered style that defines current pop production is itself a relatively recent development. Hirway's record  reaches back to the older live-tracking tradition that shaped the 1950s and 60s Bollywood recordings he grew up listening to in his parents' house. The album is about memory and so it's appropriate that the music is recorded whole  in all its beautiful imperfections. If you've been telling yourself you'd pursue your creative passions if you just had more time — this episode is going to gently challenge that story.Because for most people, figuring out how to make time for creativity isn't really a scheduling problem. It's a permission problem. One that's been quietly reinforced by years of putting everyone else's needs first, until your own creative life is running on whatever's left over — which is usually nothing.I'm getting personal in this one, sharing how I've finished big creative projects in just thirty minutes a day, why my family treats creative time as non-negotiable, and the specific strategies that keep creative work from getting swallowed by the logistical demands of a full life — including batching household tasks, separating the creator from the editor, and building small daily habits that prioritize consistency over marathon sessions. This episode is for anyone who feels that low-grade grief of a creative life going unmet — and wants something more useful than "wake up earlier."Your creativity is not a luxury. This episode will remind you why.

Work Advice for Me

Angie, Brad, and Nicki are joined by Season 4 champ Ashley for a recap that somehow starts with tattoos and ends with prunes, charcoal, and one very unexpected question. The episode opens with a marathon tattoo duel, immediately exposing the divide on the show. Angie and Ashley proudly rep their tattoos, while Brad and Nicki are firmly on team no ink. Brad doubles down on never getting a tattoo, and Nicki makes it clear she's not built for needles. Meanwhile, Angie and Ashley sound ready to step in and win the category themselves. From there, the dreaded Roman Empire category continues to get avoided like it's cursed. Nobody wants it, nobody claims it, and it keeps getting passed around the floor. Taj defends “Sunday Toppings,” which leads to a full debate about granola on ice cream. The group agrees this should not be happening. Then the episode takes a turn during the Home Remedies duel.Brad leans all the way into the category, bringing up prunes and charcoal as real-life remedies. That alone would've been enough—but then Brad takes it one step further and asks the group if they've ever used charcoal… specifically for farting. The conversation immediately goes off the rails, with reactions ranging from confusion to concern, and it becomes one of the funniest moments of the episode.Meanwhile, Eric continues to be the biggest question mark on the floor. He passes multiple times, chooses not to use his time boost, and still manages to win. Ashley and the crew question whether it's strategy or luck, especially as his confidence continues to outpace his execution.Mike and Tim stay active in the chat throughout, adding commentary, backing takes, and basically functioning as unofficial co-hosts during the episode.Victor shines in “Home Remedies,” “peroxide-gate” sparks a rules debate, and the episode wraps with a rough dance movies duel, where several obvious answers are missed and the frustration level rises. In the end, it's a mix of close duels, bold confidence, questionable decisions, and a moment that no one expected:a serious conversation about charcoal… and farting.
