The Guess Who is a legendary Canadian band who enjoyed chart topping hits in the late 60s and early 70s with an impressive catalogue of songs including “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” and “No Time.” During the course of its career, the band has released 11 studio albums, and charted 14 Top 40 hit singles, 2 of which went to number one in the United States. The Guess Who is best known internationally for its 1970 album, American Woman, which hit number one in Canada and number nine in the United States, with five other albums also hitting the top ten in Canada.Their fan base spans multiple generations. Very few bands have survived numerous member changes — let alone having smash hits with each lineup — but The Guess Who's motto is “the music is the message”.The most recent and up-to-date version of the band has mastered a wildlyentertaining romp through the early hits mixed in with their current creations, while managing to take the whole experience to a new level. Their most recentmusical offering is stunningly sophisticated, searingly emotional, and musicallyeclectic, while remaining eminently singalongable.Their live show is a celebration of life, being alive, and thriving in these uncertaintimes. Matt shares his personal journey and discusses the importance of shining a spotlight on mental health issues. The future of work doesn't have to be an extension of today's reality. This is the first installment in Strange New Work, a new series from What Works about imagining radically different ways of working and doing business. In this episode, I take a closer look at speculative fiction and its role in the collective imaginary. Is science fiction all space operas and apocalyptic battles? Not hardly. Science fiction isn't really about the future. It's a commentary on and reimagining of the present.Footnotes: All of the books I mention in this series can be found here. No Time to Spare by Ursula K. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners says it needs more funding to help deal with patients experiencing mental health issues. It comes ahead of a major world conference in October, which will discuss solutions on how general practitioners can best provide mental healthcare.
“I think a lot of us embody this, what I call the paradox of the courageous coward, right? Like, we're capable of doing these things that are bonkers. Like they take a tremendous amount of courage or maybe experience, you could call it, but we'll call it courage, speaking in front of a panel, going live on television, you know, with me, swimming with sharks, going into the eyes of hurricanes, going to war many times, marooning myself in weird places. And yet we have this other side that is so fragile, so gossamer thin and on our level to tolerate anxiety that, you know, it can break and then snap at any moment.” So says Matt Gutman, ABC Chief National Correspondent and the author of No Time to Panic: How I Curbed My Anxiety and Conquered a Lifetime of Panic Attacks. Matt is a new friend, and I've loved getting to know him and his deeply feeling heart, as well as the way he so perfectly captures this idea of being a “courageous coward.” He's not afraid to step into a war zone, and yet he's felt incapacitated by anxiety—taken out at the knees by panic—which makes him the perfect encapsulation of the binary of modern masculinity. Quite simply, the world is too much for any of us to confidently swashbuckle our way through. I commend Matt for saying it. He wrote this book because he suffered a panic attack on air during a heightened moment of news—one of those moments where all of our eyes were turned toward our TVs—and he ended up being put on a temporary leave. It was in that moment that he recognized he needed help and healing, as this panic attack—though public—was not a solitary event. It was happening to him all the time. In No Time to Panic he explains how hard he went to work at healing, at uncovering what was at the heart of his anxiety, which is at the center of our conversation today. We have constant demands on our attention, energy and time. If we don't have strategies for staying focused on what is most important we will almost certainly lose the battle and succumb to distractions that leave us feeling depleted and frustrated. My friend and colleague, Dr. Chris Johnson has literally written a book on how to stay present. And me? I created a worksheet with strategies to help you get and stay focused. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:To guide your energy, attention and time ask, Who is the person I want to be? What is the impact I want to make? Pausing allows us to determine where our attention is, or is notMulti-tasking is not actually possible for our human brainsWe discuss a few simple (but not easy!) tactics and meta practices for navigating these demandsAsk yourself, ‘Do I feel renewed? Do I feel regenerated?' after time on Social MediaWe get distracted by what is easy rather than focus on what is importantThe importance of a ‘positive no'We stay reactive and busy as a way to avoid being alone with our thoughtsAdmit it: the list is too long and you won't get it all done (Burkeman's 4,000 weeks)There are common places where we leak energy: other's expectations, over committing, worryingI've created a worksheet to help you navigate the demands on your energy, attention and time. He reports for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, including “World News Tonight with David Muir,” “20/20,” “Good Morning America” and “Nightline.” He has reported for ABC from 40 countries across the globe. A multiple award-winning correspondent, Matt has covered the COVID-19 crisis, the protests in American streets following the death of George Floyd, the immigration crisis, and countless foreign and domestic terror attacks. Over the past half-decade, he has been one of the most frequently used correspondents on “20/20.” Matt's tireless reporting helped “20/20” win an Emmy® for its documentary on the 2017 Las Vegas massacre and a Christopher Award for its reporting on the Thai cave rescue. He followed every step of that treacherous mission to save the 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand. Matt subsequently authored “The Boys in the Cave,” which chronicled the heroics of a motley crew of cave diving misfits, the US Airforce, and Thai Navy Seals who spearheaded the rescue. Previously based in Miami, Matt won awards for his coverage of the Trayvon Martin Shooting and the BP Oil spill. From 2013-2018 he hosted the ABC Television Network's Saturday morning show, “Sea Rescue,” which won the 2016 Emmy for “Outstanding Children's Series.” Before joining ABC News in 2008 where he started at ABC News Radio, Matt was a Jerusalem-based reporter for seven years, covering every major conflict in the Middle East. Matt is married and a father of two. He is a graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts. On this episode, Matt discusses his second book, “No Time to Panic: How I Curbed My Anxiety and Conquered a Lifetime of Panic Attacks”. In this episode, I'll discuss my reaction to an interview that American Stoic Ryan Holliday had with James Clear. They discussed connecting yes with no when deciding whether to commit to an activity. I call it yes/no coupling, but I doubt this original with me. You'll probably think this episode will suck, but I think mind will be blown if you actually listen. Love me some James Clear!!
28% of Americans will experience a panic attack in their lifetime. Some researchers say that number is closer to 50%. Renowned ABC News correspondent, Matt Gutman, never felt afraid when assigned to active and dangerous war zones. Yet when he had to speak on live television in front of a viewership of 9 million people, the seemingly unflappable reporter suffered intense panic attacks that nearly cost him his job. To help anyone whose life has been impacted by this often misunderstood mental health challenge, Gutman shares his personal journey in No Time to Panic. In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Gutman about the book and the hard-won insights he brings his readers, exploring: The importance of destigmatizing panic attack disorder; conventional and alternative healing modalities; "retiring the drill sergeant" (aka managing the inner critic); excavating unresolved grief; how panic disorder can metastasize into other psychological issues; physical threats vs. social threats (and how we tolerate them); the evolutionary purpose of anxiety; how vulnerability is often the first step toward healing; the paradox of welcoming your panic; psychedelics and ego transcendence; the power of mindfulness and meditation; and more. Note: This episode originally aired on Sounds True One, where these special episodes of Insights at the Edge are available to watch live on video and with exclusive access to Q&As with our guests. Matt Gutman (ABC News's chief national correspondent, author of No Time to Panic) opens up about the panic attack he had while reporting on the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash, which led him to pursue every remedy under the sun to treat his panic disorder. He breaks down the difference between panic and anxiety attacks, their biological purpose, why they present so uniquely in each individual, and how they physically manifest for him. Matt explains the shame that comes with panic disorder, how his "safety behaviors" actually primed him for panic, and shares alarming statistics about panic disorders. He discusses the impact of losing his father at an early age, his family's intergenerational trauma, his fears of imperfection and social rejection, and how his own trauma aids his journalistic career. Mayim opens up about her own personal experiences with panic attacks and she and Matt unpack all of the traditional and unconventional remedies he has explored, from traditional talk therapy to holotropic breathwork, reiki, and even toad venom. He discusses his immunity to ayahuasca, why crying needs a cultural rebrand, and how his recovery journey has made him a better father.Matt Gutman's new book, No Time to Panic: How I Curbed My Anxiety And Conquered A Lifetime Of Panic Attacks: https://a.co/d/feAfPmWBialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

In this episode, Stella & Sasha explore the concept of an Oedipus Trap, inspired by a podcast with Megan McArdle (see below). Sasha and Stella apply this psychological concept to the issue of childhood transition and how so many people involved might refuse to face their own mistakes or acknowledge their own accountability to the consequences of gender-affirming care. In her opinion piece for the Washington Post (linked below), Megan McArdle describes the oedipus trap as “There are some mistakes no one can live with, no matter how innocently they were made…Thus the trap: If you have made such a mistake, it is obviously better not to know you have done so.” The origin of the concept comes from the story of Oedipus from Greek mythology (linked below). In their conversation, Stella & Sasha speak delicately, but candidly about reconciling the choices and actions of affirmative clinicians, as their stories and experiences can offer valuable insights for reflection and learning around the harm vs. benefit analysis of youth gender transition. Ep #223 - I hear, "this is a waste of time," often when speaking to people who have been in and out of recovery centers, lapsed/relapsed, and are trying new things to better their life in addiction recovery. Something being "a waste of time" is subjective to your perspective. Circumstances happening in your life can equally be experienced as awesome, monumental, and life-changing if you choose that perspective instead. The tiniest little thing can be a sign that your life is heading in a more desirable direction. Noticing an albino squirrel, the butterfly on the flower, not yelling at the car driving erratically, speaking calmly to a loved one where yelling used to occur. The examples are endless. The monotonous and mundane events in life they we choose to behave differently in - that is the power of self-awareness and recovery. In this week's episode I will cover: Introduction: The Time Paradox in Recovery Understanding the nuanced relationship between time, sobriety, and recovery. Personal reflections: Moments of "Wasted Time" I dive into periods I felt I "wasted" time on my recovery journey. Highlight: Sobriety vs. Recovery Defining the difference: Sobriety as the act of abstaining and recovery as the process of healing and personal growth. The Mindset of "Wasting Time" Societal pressures: Navigating the cultural drive of toxic productivity. The trap of feeling stagnant in one's recovery journey. Risks of this mindset: The setbacks and potential relapses. The Empowerment of Experiencing Lessons A paradigm shift: Seeing every moment as a learning opportunity. Stories of wisdom derived from everyday situations. The role of mindfulness and being present in recovery. Addiction's Double-Edged Sword: Wasted Life vs. Wisdom Gained Drawing connections between addiction's blur and the haze of wasted life. Understanding recovery: Beyond sobriety and towards reshaping mindset. Seeking wisdom in each step and experience. The Active Pursuit of Empowerment Active vs. Passive: The importance of doing rather than overthinking. Breaking the cycle of over-analysis by taking concrete steps in recovery. A reminder to celebrate every win, no matter how small. The Illusion of "Having Time" During Addiction Contemplating the time lost in the grip of addiction. The distortion of time through addiction: Blurring days and shifting priorities. Personal stories of how I used to waste time during addiction and the reality of my misconceptions. "No Time" for Recovery: Debating the common excuse of lacking time for recovery essentials like therapy or meetings. Changing the narrative: If there's time for addiction, there's time for recovery. Practical insights: Transitioning time from unhealthy habits to beneficial routines. Overcoming Time Excuses: Steps to Embracing Recovery Digging deeper: Understanding the real reasons behind the "time" excuse. Viewing recovery as a vital commitment, not just a sideline activity. Conclusion & Call to Action An encouraging note: Rethink your concept of "wasted time." An open invitation: Ponder upon instances when seemingly wasted moments became profound life lessons. ******************************************** Hit play and dive in with open minds and hearts.
