This week James and Mal are joined by Tim Robson, who gives us a rundown on what's happening in the motorsport world, namely F1 being faced with its first ever triple header (27:40), the possibility for Daniel Ricciardo to become our highest paid sportsperson (29:10), and Fernando Alonso's interest to move to America to drive for a British team founded by a New Zealander (32:05).But first, as always, we start off with Muskwatch (1:00), where we wish our fearless leader Elon a happy birthday, have some questions about his "Mad Max" overtaking mode currently in testing, and give an update on Model 3 production. In other news, women can finally drive in Saudi Arabia, and to celebrate, Aseel Al-Hamad drove a 2012 Renault Formula One car around the French Grand Prix circuit (5:25). VW has destroyed Pikes Peak with the IDR time of 7:57.148 (7:05), and Mazda has finally caved and will offer - as an option - Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its entire lineup from later this year (11:30).VW and Ford have announced they will build trucks and vans together going forward (15:30), manufacturers are losing billions building EVs and autonomous cars that nobody actually wants (18:40), we attended a sneak preview of Aston's new DBS Superleggera (22:10), and we look back to some of history's "Design Damsels" (24:10).James Cleary, Malcolm Flynn and Tim Robson tear down, pressure test and rebuild the issues of the automotive week. You can get in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter (#CGPodcast)and Instagram, or share your thoughts on what cars are the same as what fruit by emailing comments@carsguide.com.au.You can subscribe to the CarsGuide podcast on iTunes, find us on TuneIn, Stitcher, Spotify, Pocket Casts, Whooshkaa, and, naturally, the CarsGuide website.
We're split on the French GP but we CAN agree that LEC should go to Ferrari, three DRS zones is more than two, and Saudi Arabia is definitely a country. SHOW NOTES Despite losing his legs, Billy Monger drove an F1 car Even with the helmet on, you can tell Aseel Al-Hamad is smiling (via Chicago Tribune) The F1 Trading Card Game is out of beta (iOS only) Shift+F1 Fantasy Formula 1 league invite code: 0b62fe (first character is a zero)
Aseel Al Hamad was born in Saudi Arabia. She grew up loving watching motorsports - formula 1 racing and things like that. But, as a female in Saudi Arabia, she wasn’t even allowed to drive a regular car on regular city streets. Last year, she became the first woman to be on the board of the Saudi Arabian Motorsport Federation. Saudi Arabia also recently dropped their ban on female drivers, and in celebration of the new independence, Hamad got to take a lap in Renault’s Formula One race car! Woah!
