A battle laden with respect at the Redbull Ring as Norris bounced back and Oscar looked to get even, Silverstone's stage is more than set, hold on to your hats. The Sauber resurgence lives on, Bortoletto first points, a double points finish and suddenly eyes are all turning to the green machine. Is 6th or even 5th in constructor more than just a dream? Williams had an absolute mare, a double DNF and opposing fortunes to the Sauber, has the fairytale season start come to an end? And Bernie returned this week, the old boss making his first appearance on the podium ever. The F1 supremo wasn't out of place on the dias. All the plus much much more on this week's episode of BTRL.
F1 correspondent and F1TV presenter Lawrence Barretto, and Brazilian journalist Julianne Cerasoli, join Tom Clarkson in the Spielberg paddock to discuss Lando Norris's victory at the Austrian Grand Prix. How did Lando bounce back from Canada? What did we learn from his epic wheel-to-wheel battle with teammate and title rival Oscar Piastri? And is this a ‘turning point' in their championship fight? George Russell and Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff reignited rumours that Max Verstappen could join the team with some interesting comments to the media over the weekend. How likely is that for 2026? What would Lawrence and Julianne do if they were advising Max in this situation? Ferrari had their best Sunday of the season with Charles Leclerc finishing P3 and Lewis Hamilton P4. With three podiums from the last four races, are they heading in the right direction? And after Lewis wanted to try a one-stop strategy, are the team ‘scared' to make those calls? Also on the agenda: Julianne tells us why Gabriel Bortoleto's first points in Formula 1 is such big news in Brazil, Racing Bulls Team Principal Laurent Mekies joins the pod to reflect on a ‘masterclass' from Liam Lawson after his career-best P6, and do Red Bull need to re-evaluate their second seat again following another challenging weekend for Yuki Tsunoda? Lando Norris began his race weekend in Austria with headset on, watching Alexander Dunne show his talent in FP1. He then quickly made up for lost time, setting the pace in FP2, taking the pole on Saturday and winning the race on Sunday. Of course, as Peter Windsor describes in this podcast, it was not as simple as that: his team-mate at McLaren-Mercedes, Oscar Piastri, applied pressure throughout the race; and Lando - like many other drivers - was obliged for most of the distance to nurse aero damage on the car. McLaren, though, finished one-two again, with Ferrari crossing the line P3/P4 (with Charles Leclerc ahead of Sir Lewis Hamilton). George Russell was P5 for Mercedes but Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen, who qualified only seventh, was eliminated on the first lap when he was t-boned by the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. The highly anticipated "F1: The Movie" is set for release next week, boasting an impressive 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Actor Brad Pitt was seen driving a 2023 MCL60 at COTA, adding to the film's buzz , and the F1 director has teased a "Days of Thunder" crossover as a potential sequel concept. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso has achieved a remarkable milestone, having started an astounding 35.7% of all F1 Grand Prix races in history. Young talents Dino Beganovic and Alex Dunne are set to gain valuable experience in Free Practice 1 (FP1) at Austria, stepping in for Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, respectively. In organizational news, the FIA has restructured, resulting in the dismissal of Sara Mariani, its Head of Sustainability, Diversity & Inclusion. Istanbul race organizers have publicly stated their readiness to host a Grand Prix if the new Madrid circuit isn't completed for the 2026 season. Liberty Media has received unconditional approval to acquire MotoGP, with the deal expected to finalize by July 3, 2025. James Vowles has signed a new long-term deal with the Williams Formula 1 team, seen by drivers like Alex Albon as a powerful "vote of confidence". The podcast also features an in-depth look at the Austrian Grand Prix's rich and varied history across multiple venues, from the Zeltweg Airfield to the current Red Bull Ring. Max Verstappen has notably dominated at the Red Bull Ring in recent years, securing multiple victories. The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix saw a dramatic race where George Russell secured victory for Mercedes after a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who were fiercely battling for the lead. Ferrari's 2025 underperformance is primarily attributed to a fundamental issue with their car's design, specifically its difficulty in running very low to the ground without incurring excessive plank wear in high-speed corners. Both Ferrari and Red Bull are anticipated to introduce substantial upgrades to their cars, with a particular focus on the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. Key talking points for the upcoming weekend include whether Max Verstappen can reassert dominance on his home turf, Mercedes' momentum after Russell's 2024 win, McLaren's superior tire management, the impact of Ferrari's upgrades, potential track limits issues, and the performance of junior drivers in FP1.
