Bezos is back in startup mode, Amazon gets weird again, and the great old-car tech retrofit debate

This week: Jeff Bezos is back in startup mode (sort of) with Project Prometheus — a $6.2 billion AI-for-the-physical-world venture that instantly became one of the most talked-about new companies in tech. We dig into what his return to the CEO title really means, why the company’s location is still a mystery, and how this echoes the era when Bezos was regularly launching big bets from Seattle. Then we look at Amazon’s latest real-world experiment: package-return kiosks popping up inside Goodwill stores around the Seattle region. It’s a small pilot, but it brings back memories of the early days when Amazon’s oddball experiments seemed to appear out of nowhere. And finally…Todd makes the case for upgrading his 2007 Toyota Camry with CarPlay, Android Auto, and a backup camera — while John questions the logic of sinking thousands into a beloved older car. All that, plus a mystery Microsoft shirt, a little Seattle nostalgia, and a look ahead to next week’s podcast collaboration with Me, Myself and AI from MIT Sloan Management Review.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NIO's largest investor just created the world's hottest autonomous vehicle market, and Chinese robotaxi companies are flooding in. This week, Abu Dhabi issued the first fully driverless commercial licenses to Chinese companies including WeRide, Carrot Express, Didi, and Cao Cao Mobility - while XPeng continues building its autonomous capabilities globally. But here's what NIO investors need to understand: the same Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund that invested 3.3 billion dollars in NIO is actively building the infrastructure, regulatory framework, and commercial pathways for Chinese autonomous technology to compete globally. In this episode, we break down why seven Chinese autonomous vehicle manufacturers have converged on Abu Dhabi, what the SAVI Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry Cluster means for the future of robotaxis, and how Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds have invested 7 billion dollars in Chinese technology between 2023 and 2024 - five times the previous year. We also cover the geopolitical strategy behind Abu Dhabi's National AI Strategy requiring 25 percent of traffic to be autonomous by 2030.Meanwhile, Tesla just released FSD Version 14.1.7 with Elon Musk claiming version 14.2 will achieve fully autonomous driving within one to two months. We analyze the technical developments including end-to-end neural networks with 4.5 to 10 times more parameters than version 13, breakpoint recovery capabilities using L4 terminology, and weekly iteration cycles. Plus, Tesla is internally testing CarPlay integration after years of resistance - a McKinsey study found one-third of car buyers won't consider vehicles without CarPlay support as Tesla sales weaken. For NIO investors specifically, this episode examines why NIO's financial relationship with Abu Dhabi positions the company uniquely for autonomous vehicle deployment, how the NAD platform compares to competitors, and what the validation of Chinese autonomous technology in international markets means for NIO's global expansion strategy. We discuss battery swap infrastructure advantages for autonomous fleets, premium brand positioning in the robotaxi market, and the strategic timing considerations for NIO's entry into commercial autonomous operations. The robotaxi race is accelerating. Chinese companies are proving their technology works internationally. Tesla is pushing aggressive timelines. And NIO has the capital, technology, and partnerships to compete - the question is when they'll make their move. This is the competitive landscape analysis every NIO investor needs to understand right now.Topics covered: NIO stock analysis, Abu Dhabi autonomous vehicles, Chinese robotaxi deployment, CYVN Holdings investment strategy, XPeng autonomous driving, Tesla FSD version 14.1.7 analysis, Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund investments, WeRide commercial license, Didi autonomous driving expansion, SAVI industry cluster, UAE National AI Strategy, NIO NAD platform development, global EV competition, autonomous driving technology comparison, robotaxi business models, and Chinese EV manufacturer global expansion.

The hosts go on to discuss rumors that Tesla will be ADDING the Apple CarPlay feature to some or all of its models in the near future. A huge new Honda recall will affect the owners of certain late-model Civics. Listen in for details. Jill and Tom chat briefly about Ford making Blue Advantage certified preowned vehicles available on Amazon. Still in the first segment, Jill shares her impressions of the 2027 Kia Telluride midsize crossover, a clay model of which she recently checked out. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Tiago Castro, Vice President of Infiniti of the Americas, to the podcast. Valve recently announced three new products to add to their family of Steam hardware. The reception has been mostly good, but with a release date of ‘early 2026' and no price tag yet, will this slate of new devices live up to all the hype it's been getting?Tesla and CarPlay have been like oil and water since forever. Now that rumors are circling that the car company has been internally testing a way to incorporate Apple's smartphone integration system  in their cars, what does this say about Tesla and also CarPlay? Especially now that GM is looking to veer away from it. The BBC have been caught in Donald Trump's crosshairs after they aired a documentary seemingly manipulating his speech and taking it out of context. The British Broadcaster has since apologized but it looks like a lawsuit or some settlement is looming. Nigeria continue their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Gabon are the most recent challengers on their path and they seem to have been brushed off easily. But at what cost? If they are to make it to the promised land, they will need to take destiny into their own hands.Steam Hardware - SteamTesla Is Working to Add Apple CarPlay in Bid to Boost Vehicle Sales - BloombergTrump says he will sue the BBC despite broadcaster's apology - CNNVictor Osimhen double keeps Nigeria alive in WC playoff - ESPNConnect with us:@backyardconversations @iGbenga @TemiDavis @dpencilpusher

The group jokes about aliens, mental shielding, and Guy's emergency hat deployment skills before shifting into the week's Apple news. They begin with VisionOS 26.2 Beta, noting incremental improvements such as fixes for stylus pressure, stability updates, and lingering bugs in AirDrop visibility, SharePlay DRM playback, and subscription syncing. The panel agrees the update feels like a tightening pass while everyone waits for the next major feature drop. Apple's newest immersive video, "Flight Ready," filmed with Navy F-18s, sparks lively discussion. The group praises the cinematic quality—especially nighttime carrier deck landings and aerial shots—but several mention Apple's signature issue with immersive content: the feeling that "people are way too close to your face." The panel also highlights the increasing amount of third-party immersive Vision Pro content, including music videos, training simulations, and niche experiences created in tools like DaVinci Resolve, signaling that spatial content creation is slowly becoming more accessible. Eric shares his in-store test of the Vision Pro M5, where he focused on widgets, Safari multitasking, virtual displays, and system responsiveness. He intentionally pushed the device hard to see if it stutters—and it didn't. Dave walks through updates in iOS/iPadOS/watchOS/tvOS 26.2 betas, pointing out UI refinements such as expanded Liquid Glass styling, an improved Alarm interface, app sorting options in Game Library, and message-pinning in CarPlay. CarPlay itself becomes a heated topic—Dave explains how answering a call sometimes instantly hangs up afterward. Marty expresses frustration over automotive UI "reactions" in group chats while driving. The general consensus: CarPlay is great… except when it isn't. The group digs into macOS 26.2 (Tahoe) with mixed reactions. While some see improvements, Jeff notes memory issues and audio stack quirks still need addressing. 1Password's new behavior—unlocking automatically after system login—splits the panel. Some appreciate fewer prompts, while others insist on strict manual unlocking for security. A retrospective on five years of Apple's M-series chips follows. Marty mentions real-world benefits moving from M4 to M5, Jeff feels his M2 Pro is still strong, Dave says his M4 Pro Mac mini is now his main machine, and Guy jokes that old Intel Macs were basically "space heaters with keyboards." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You can read Tom's recent blog post on the topic here. The hosts also discuss Ram's new SUV, which is due sometime as a 2028 model. Expect the truck to be mechanically similar to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Next topic is a trio of boundary-pushing Lexus concept cars seen last week at the Japan Mobility Show. The six-wheel minivan is Tom's favorite. Still is the first segment, Jill reviews the 2025 Subaru BRZ tS small coupe. Good news, the rear-drive sportster can still be had with a manual transmission. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Jerry Perez of The Drive to the show. Jerry shared details of his time in the updated Audi Q3 featuring the maker's Micro LED Digital Matrix Headlights. Jerry also recalls his time in one of Europe's smallest—and most charming—electric vehicles, the Fiat Topolino. In the last segment, Jill is subject to Tom's “More Spellin'” quiz, featuring a Hallmark Christmas move bonus question.

Then, throw out the spreadsheets! Mandy C. needs a replacement do-it-all fun cars, and writes in. Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed sits in for Jill this week. Jill will be back for next week's show. Paul and Tom open the show by discussing consumer-battery maker Duracell's foray into electric-vehicle charging. Duracell branded car chargers are showing up now in the U.K., and are expected to arrive in the U.S. in the not-to-distant future. The hosts go on to discuss two big General Motors announcements. First, GM will be launching full level-3 semi-autonomous drive systems for the 2028 model year, beginning with the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ. An advancement of the maker's Super Cruise technology, the new system will permit drivers to look away from the road while engaged. Listen in for further details. GM also plans to drop Apple CarPlay from all its vehicles beginning in 2028. Jill is going to be angry. Still in the first segment, Paul talks about driving the high-performance McLaren GT on the race track. Paul also talks a little about the McLaren lineup and how the sports-car maker's U.S. offerings differ. In the second segment, Paul and Tom welcome Bart Sowa of GTI Energy to the show. Bart talks about fuel-cell technology, and how hydrogen-power is viable option for large over-the-road trucks. Bart also shares his thoughts on the future of hydrogen as a transportation fuel in the U.S. In the last segment, Bart joined Paul for this week's quiz. Can you guess the best-selling car in Alabama? Listen in to hear the “Best Sellers by State” quiz.

News and Updates: Amazon outage knocks out half the internet: A faulty DNS update in Amazon's DynamoDB caused a massive AWS outage, crippling services like Zoom, Alexa, Slack, and major financial platforms. Over 8 million users were affected globally, delaying flights, halting trades, and disrupting daily life. Analysts estimate losses could reach billions, reigniting calls for multi-cloud resilience—and even breaking up Big Tech. Microsoft issues urgent Windows 11 fix: An October update broke Windows Recovery Environment tools, disabling USB keyboards and mice during recovery. Microsoft rushed out patch KB5070773 to restore functionality. Users are urged to install immediately to regain recovery access and avoid potential boot or repair issues. Meta shuts down Messenger desktop apps: Messenger for Windows and macOS will shut down Dec. 15. Users must switch to web access or lose functionality. Messages will remain on Facebook accounts if secure storage is enabled. Meta gave no reason for the change, though declining desktop usage likely drove the decision. GM phases out CarPlay and Android Auto across all models: CEO Mary Barra confirmed GM will remove phone projection from all future vehicles—gas and electric—by 2028. The company is transitioning to a new unified computing platform with Google Gemini AI and in-house apps, part of its push toward a fully integrated infotainment system. GM unveils AI assistant and eyes-off driving system: At its “GM Forward” event, the automaker announced a 2028 launch for its next-gen platform featuring Google Gemini AI, hands-free “eyes-off” driving, and energy systems with home battery leasing. GM calls it a “new era of mobility,” aiming to transform vehicles into intelligent assistants. Apple slashes iPhone Air production amid weak demand: Apple is “drastically” cutting iPhone Air output to near shutdown levels after poor sales and “virtually no demand,” per Nikkei. Customers favor the iPhone 17 Pro lineup for better cameras and battery life. The ultra-thin $999 iPhone Air failed to generate excitement despite its sleek 5.6mm design.

The group compares weight, comfort, thermal balance, strap systems, and software ecosystems. Marty shares his early hands-on impressions with the Galaxy XR—including its lighter design but occasional light leakage—while Ben and Jill discuss how purpose may determine market success: Vision Pro for spatial productivity, Galaxy XR for approachable consumer entry.  The discussion moves to VisionOS Beta 4, where developer-focused updates aim to improve stability and groundwork for more immersive experiences. The consensus: incremental but necessary.   Then comes one of the show's most passionate sections: Apple's decision not to allow trade-ins of the first-generation Vision Pro. The panel debates how this affects:     •    customer loyalty     •    early-adopter trust     •    whether the Vision Pro is being treated like a dev kit vs. consumer product. Reactions range from “understandable” to “rough look for a $3,500 device.”  From there, the conversation shifts to the GM / CarPlay breakup, which inspires instant groans. Everyone shares personal and community stories confirming that CarPlay is no longer a luxury—it's baseline expectation. One panelist notes even non-tech friends refuse to buy a car without CarPlay, which says more than any product review ever could.   iPhone Air production and strategy concerns, tied to mid-tier pricing pressure  YouTube's new AI deepfake likeness detection, and what it means for creators and security Topics and Links In Touch With Vision Pro this week.  visionOS 26.1 Beta 3 Release Notes | Apple Developer Documentation  New Samsung Vision Pro Killer? The Dutch courts finally did something useful: they told Meta to quit force-feeding algorithmic slop to everyone, so Facebook and Instagram users might actually see posts from friends again—if they can remember who those are. Meanwhile, OpenAI's Sora 2 rollout is the kind of chaos that makes you wonder if the company replaced QA with a TikTok filter, as outrage videos flood the internet faster than you can say “deepfake meltdown.” Apple banned ICEBlock for being too effective while ICE now wants its own social media surveillance tool—one that OpenAI shut down when Chinese accounts tried to build it. California's hammering Tesla for its abysmal insurance claims handling, OpenAI is gobbling up chunks of AMD, and consultants got caught using ChatGPT to fake reports before proudly partnering with Anthropic, who just landed Deloitte as its latest “enterprise AI” victim. Elsewhere in this circus: a Florida teen asked ChatGPT how to kill his friend, Taylor Swift fans are furious her new promo video used AI slop (“too rich to be this cheap”), and Apple's “Find My” led cops to a mountain of smuggled iPhones. In Media Candy, Brian's stunned The Diplomat scored a third season, The Long Walk is being pitched as Stand By Me meets Squid Game, California finally bans loud streaming commercials, and Amazon censored Bond posters to remove guns because apparently irony is dead. AI “musicians” are signing record deals while Zelda Williams begs people to stop resurrecting her dad with deepfake garbage. In Apps & Doodads, Jony Ive's OpenAI gadget is delayed (good), Rivian insists we'll “appreciate” not having CarPlay (we won't), Spotify and ChatGPT are teaming up to read your soul through playlists, and Jason warns everyone that the Echo Show is basically an ad-spewing parasite. Apple's now facing a cybercrime probe in France for Siri's wiretapping habits, and if you're nostalgic for simpler times, ioquake3 will let you relive Quake III Arena glory on a modern rig. At the Library, Peter Cawdron's Dark Beauty: First Contact belly-flops as a Slaughterhouse-Five tribute, while Cory Doctorow's Enshittification nails exactly why everything sucks—even if his fixes are pure science fiction.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - clnmy.com/GrumpyOldGeeks - Use code OLDGEEKS for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Say this for OpenAI: it's very good at raising money, and it's very good at getting attention. David and Jake are joined by The Verge's Hayden Field to talk about OpenAI's demo day, the company's app store plans, why it's trying to build every possible ChatGPT feature all at the same time, and more. After that, the hosts talk about the ongoing popularity of the Sora app, and whether OpenAI has truly built a new kind of social network. Then Hayden has to leave, so David and Jake take on the lightning round to discuss Intel chips, Alex Cooper's Google deal, Starry internet, and more. I'm Joanna Stern, the senior personal tech columnist at The Wall Street Journal, and this is my final Decoder episode filling in for Nilay while he's out on parental leave. My guest today: Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe. This is RJ's third time on the show, and it felt like the perfect follow-up to my conversation last week with Ford CEO Jim Farley. I loved the idea of going straight from Ford to Rivian. And if you listened to the Farley episode, this one flows nicely. RJ and I cover a lot of the same challenges: tariffs, China, EV pricing. Of course, I also asked about CarPlay.  Links:  A pretty fascinating look under the hood of the Rivan R2 | The Verge Rivian CEO says CarPlay isn't going to happen | The Verge Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says too many carmakers are copying Tesla | Decoder Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe isn't scared of the Cybertruck | Decoder Rivian breaks ground on $5 billion Georgia plant | AP Rivian narrows 2025 delivery guidance Q3 as production slips | WSJ Rivian R2 remains on track for $45,000 and 2026 production | Car and Driver Credits: Decoder is a production of The Verge and part of the Vox Media Podcast Network.
