I love a good ensemble film, one where a bunch of characters some together and pool their collective talens in order to achieve a common goal. In this week's episode I'll be recommending a few films in which multiple characters team up and head out!Smokey and the Bandit (1977)Big Enos and his son have a taste for Coors beer, which back in the 1970s was illegal to ship east of the Mississippi. The two are willing to pay big money to anyone who can make the run from Georgia to Texas and back and deliver 400 cases of Coors in less than 28 hours, and the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) and his pal Cletus (Jerry Reed) are just the ones to pull it off. Unfortunately for them, the Bandit picks up a runaway bride named Carrie (Sally Fields) who left Junior, the son of Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), at the alter. With a Smokey from Texas hot on their tail, it's “east bound and down” in a race to deliver the goods before the law ruins their fun.The Great Muppet Caper (1981)When Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo blow their first (and last) job as reporters for a newspaper in England, the trio must team up to clear their names and prevent the theft of Lady Holiday's most expensive posession, the Baseball Diamond. Featuring a slew of cameos and starring Diana Rigg as Lady Holiday and Charles Grodin as her crooken brother, Nicky. Personally, I think this sequel to The Muppet Movie is actually better. Yeah, I said it.Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987)In the fourth Police Academy film, citizens are being recruited to assist our favorite police department through their new outreach program, Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.) The new recruits are unqualified buffoons… which makes them a lot like the officers already on the force.Cannibal: The Musical (1993)The sky is blue, and all the leave are green… that is, until Alferd Packer returns from a prospecting expedition gone wrong and instead of finding other survivors, search parties find evidence of (gulp) cannibalism. Written by and starring Matt Stone and Trey Parker of South Park fame, Cannibal: The Musical features an interesting plot, catchy musical numbers, and jokes you can really sink your teeth into (no pun intended).I love a good “Hero's Journey” plot, but films with groups of characters joining up to accomplish a common goal can be even more fun. If two is company and three's a crowd, ensembles are a whole bunch of fun! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. GUEST OVERVIEW: John Schneider's extensive acting career includes the iconic roles of "Bo Duke" on The Dukes of Hazzard, “Jonathan Kent” on Smallville and "Jim Cryer" on Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots, along with recurring appearances on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Nip/Tuck, The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Dancing with the Stars. As an independent filmmaker, John continues to write, direct and star in his own movies, including Christmas Cars (2019), Stand On It (2020), and Poker Run (2021), plus the forthcoming Double or Nothin' and To Die For. He also co-starred with Reba McEntire in Lifetime's 2021 holiday hit, Christmas In Tune, which follows several cross-generational smashes, from Smokey and the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) to Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (Shailene Woodley) and Sydney White (Amanda Bynes). In addition to his incredible acting career, John has over 20 albums to his credit, right up to his latest, Southern Ways, and five #1 singles on the Billboard Country chart. It's also worth noting that John co-founded (with Marie Osmond) the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, which has since raised more than $7 billion dollars for medical research.
"We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run."You must remember this one, surely? The whole movie is essentially a car chase from start to finish. It's 1977 and The Bandit (Burt Reynolds) accepts a bet from Big Enos Burdette and his son Little Enos who say he can't go to Texarkana, Texas and back to Atlanta, Georgia in a big rig with 400 smuggled cases of some of America's worst beer, Coors, in under 28 hours. Reynold's is 70's coolness personified and has great chemistry with Sally Field and Jerry Reed but it's racist Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) who steals the show alongside the iconic black Pontiac Trans Am with the Firebird decal.Big sideburns, big laughs you might think but actually it's the vehicle scenes which persist in stunt-man turned director Hal Needham's debut movie, and of course there's that unforgettable theme tune, East Bound and Down, written and performed by 'The Snowman' Jerry Reed which handily runs down the entire plot in case you're hard of thinking.
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Jersey Jason discuss Smokey and the Bandit Part 3. The Snowman (Jerry Reed) is now the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) but he still has Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) on his tail. The trivia behind the scenes of Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 is more interesting than the movie itself. Originally, this movie was shot with the premise that Jackie Gleason played both Smokey AND the Bandit. After poor test screening scores, much of the movie was re-shot with Snowman playing the Bandit. What I wouldn't give for that original cut of the film! Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Jersey Jason, William Thrasher (in his first Sequelcast episode) and special guest Will Kiser (Writer for The Super 8 Society) discuss Smokey and the Bandit II. The Snowman (Jerry Reed) and the Frog (Sally Field) have to sober up the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) to deliver a crate from Miami, Florida to Dallas, Texas. In many ways, this feels like a more family friendly remake of the original. Burt Reynolds seems tuned out reprising his role as the titular Bandit, but Jackie Gleason goes for broke playing Sheriff Buford T. Justice and two of his relatives (!!!). The new songs don't sound as catchy as in the first flick either. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Jersey Jason discuss Smokey and the Bandit. The boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there's beer in Texarkana. The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), the Snowman (Jerry Reed), and the Frog (Sally Field) will get them back no matter what it takes. Director Hal Needham pushes his car crash cinema to the brink in this amiable romantic comedy. Co-star Jerry Reed performed several songs on the soundtrack which range from country classics ("Eastbound and Down") to stirring ballads ("The Bandit"). Jackie Gleason makes for a fun villain chasing after the ultra relaxed Burt Reynolds.
