(Spoiler Section Length - 7min 37sec)Though Rankin/Bass was well-known for their holiday specials featuring the likes of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, the amount of specials that the company actually produced might be surprising to many casual viewers. But the fact of the matter is, they made enough holiday specials with enough of a shared universe that they were eventually able to make a feature-length film using characters from at least six other specials. But then, why have most people not actually heard of this film? Is it because it doesn't hold up? Listen to find out!

A love for the game will triumph over all, and our guest this week is a prime example of that. Today, we're talking to Brian Snow, a play-by-play announcer currently based in Indiana, and the founder of Snowman Multimedia. Brian's spirit is infectious, and he talks about getting into the business of broadcasting high school and college sports by just trying things in college. That led to a career of calling games, as well as alternative play-by-play and the Snowman Multimedia network, which is live on YouTube six days a week: https://www.youtube.com/@SnowmanMultimediaFollow us:Allen HalasAllenHalas.comBreakingAndEntering.netThreads/Bluesky: @AllenHalasInstagram: @AllenHalasJim LoveGoAuthenticYou.comTwitter: @jim_m_loveInstagram: @jimm.loveHustling Sideways is a business podcast hosted by Milwaukee-based music writer Allen Halas and keynote and motivational speaker Jim Love. We were so excited to see 28 Years Later and based off of the box office, we were not the only ones. And much like many of those who went to see it, we have mixed opinions on it (most of it not good.) We are a little surprised that there is another adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. We understand that there will always be retellings of King's works - and retellings of those retellings. But this one caught us off guard since it is so soon since the recent miniseries based on his book. Even stranger is how it will reportedly all be done in one movie. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it is in good hands. Much like Weapons, whose marketing continues to impress. It is strange how the silliest things will make you think of the most serious issues. Kracker Jack'd (or CrackerJack: The Movie) is an inconsequential comedy horror movie from the early 2000s that somehow got us really worked up. This shouldn't be a surprise being that it is written and directed by a white man who calls himself an “honorary soul brother”. Putting the racial insensitivity aside - which is pretty much impossible since it uses stereotypes that range from modern Black life to ugly myths created during slavery - it just isn't a very good movie. Along with being tone deaf , it is poorly edited and nonsensical. There is a good joke to be found, but this is a bad movie. On the plus side, it provides the best line ever heard on this show.It is a low bar when it comes to the best performance by a wrestler. Pro wrestlers usually play themselves. And when they are given a character a part, it is basically the same thing. Sure there are exceptions like Roddy Piper and Bautista, but the norm is Hulk Hogan and The Rock. Al Snow may not be the biggest name in pro grapes, but his performance in 2024's Unnatural is one of the best we have ever seen from a wrestler. It is too bad that the rest of the movie could not keep up with him. It is way too long. You could have shaved close to an hour off of this and gotten a much better film. The dialogue is also really bad. But the Snowman succeeds in making it watchable. He has great screen presence, is funny, and is the only consistent character. We definitely want to see more of him in the future. Summer nostalgia hits different when it comes with a side of hope for devoted J-pop fans. Sarah and Panic serve up a deliciously meandering conversation that begins with seasonal treats but evolves into something much more exciting for Arashi followers.Remember those perfect Ben & Jerry's flavors that disappeared from freezers forever? We take a deep dive into the "Flavor Graveyard," mourning lost treasures like Rainforest Crunch, Cool Britannia, and Wavy Gravy. The passionate debate about these frozen delights reveals how certain foods become time capsules for specific moments in our lives - and why we're still grieving discontinued pints decades later. But the temperature in the studio rises when we discuss recent appearances by Ninomiya on Japanese variety shows. During a dinner with members of Snowman, he dropped what might be the most tantalizing hints yet about an Arashi comeback. His coy response when directly asked about future concerts - "Well, I guess so. We probably should" - has us analyzing every word and facial expression. With Arashi's anniversary approaching in November, could this be the moment fans worldwide have been waiting for? From ice cream memories to concert whispers, this episode captures the bittersweet feeling of longing - for discontinued treats, for travel adventures, and for the return of beloved performers. What flavor memories transport you back in time? In 2012 we hiked in Bhutan and at that time we were trying to decide between two hikes. One of the choices we were looking at was the 350 km Snowman Trek which in the end we didn't end up doing. This trek is one of Bhutan's and for that matter, one of the world's, best known treks taking around 24 days to complete the whole hike. In today's episode we catch up with hiker Jonty Crane to find out more about his experience on the Snowman Trek. For me this is a bucket list hike and one that I was keen to find out more about! www.australianhiker.com.au Australian Hiker can also be found on our various social media platforms Australian Hiker Facebook Australian Hiker Instagram Australian Hiker Twitter Australian Hiker Threads Australian Hiker Youtube

So, as she celebrates the 25th anniversary of the publication of her very first novel, After You'd Gone and we wait with bated breath for the movie of her smash hit bestseller Hamnet (starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, directed by Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, Chloe Zhao, and co-written by Maggie and Chloe), I thought now was a good time to revisit our conversation from back in 2020. Since then Maggie has of course written the bestselling The Marriage Portrait and gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies of Hamnet. Here are the original show notes: This week's guest is the award-winning novelist, Maggie O'Farrell. The author of eight novels, most recently the stunning Women's Prize winner, Hamnet, and one of my favourite memoirs of all time, I Am, I Am, I am. And now she's written a children's book, the absolutely gorgeous Where Snow Angels Go, which is a banker for a Christmas Day teatime animation a la The Snowman if ever I saw one. While Maggie noses through my bookcase and plays with Sausage the (tail-less) cat, we talk being a social media refusenik, giving voice to women's stories, saying good riddance to the male gaze, why she never thought she was the marrying kind. Oh, and why she still secretly fears someone might take her Women's Prize away! Frankly, if Maggie O'Farrell has imposter syndrome, what hope is there for the rest of us? * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! So grab your celesta, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and soundtrack!Behind the BellsFB: @BehindtheBellsIG: @behind_the_bells_podcastGive us a buzz!
