You wash your hands… but did you really get them clean? You wiped down the package… but what if something invisible is still there? You tell yourself it's fine, yet your brain won't let it go. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. In this episode of the OCD Whisperer Podcast, Kristina Orlova welcomes back Mike Parker, licensed clinical social worker and creator of the OCD Space YouTube channel, to explore the obsessive doubt that drives contamination fears—and the path out of its grip. Together, they dive into the complexities of inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) and how it helps those with OCD step out of fear-driven reasoning and back into reality. But how do you convince your mind to trust your senses when OCD keeps whispering “what if”? Whether it's worries about unseen germs on a park bench, contamination from a package, or the lingering fear of harming others through inaction, this conversation lays it bare. Mike and Kristina break down the difference between healthy caution and compulsive checking, and why the way we reason matters just as much as the content of our fears. They explore how OCD hijacks imagination and certainty, and why choosing functional certainty—the decision to act as if you're okay unless proven otherwise—can be a powerful turning point. Can you learn to trust your senses again? Or will your imagination keep calling the shots? Tune in and find out—this might just change how you see everything… especially what you can't see. Let's dive in!   In This Episode [00:00:03]  Introduction to the episode [00:00:53]  Understanding ICBT [00:01:08]  Discussion on contamination fears [00:02:13]  Addressing invisible threats [00:03:04]  Grounding in reality [00:06:37]  Healthy reasoning vs. OCD reasoning [00:10:21]  Living with possibility [00:12:06]  Inferential confusion in OCD [00:13:33]  Constantly thinking about the unseen [00:14:24]  Helping clients recognize reality [00:15:29]  The challenge of OCD as a competitor [00:16:50]  Understanding reality and OCD [00:18:48]  Trust and perception [00:19:30]  Reality sensing in CBT [00:20:43]  Behavioral change and CBT [00:21:58]  Individualized treatment approaches [00:23:01]  Possibility vs. sensory information [00:24:02]  Relying on senses [00:24:25] Closing remarks and resources Notable Quotes [03:04] "It's true our senses can't detect certain things, but we have ways of dealing with that. They're already established, you know, as far as hand washing routines or, you know, if it's a religious situation, how much you should pray, what rituals you should do." — Mike Parker [06:06] "Healthy reasoning is like, okay, I know the limitations of my senses. I know what information I have available, and then ultimately I'm gonna make that decision based on that." — Mike Parker [07:07] "If you really want to sit on park benches and stop doing that. Let's realize you don't have to actually concern yourself with what you can't." — Mike Parker [15:59] "So, right, what you're telling me basically, is you're walking down the street and you have no visible poop on you, and you don't smell poop on you, and you're thinking about poop. We gotta figure out what's going on there, because you don't do that anywhere else in life." — Mike Parker [21:58] "I'm open about my OCD. There's still a certain way I thought, and next thing you know, you're right back in this anxious state that just feels horrendous.'." — Kristina [23:12] "Even in an area where your senses can't detect anything, the reasonable, rational way to live is to do that functional certainty thing and just to assume you're okay." — Mike Parker Our Guest Mike Parker, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and private practice therapist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In this riveting episode of the OCD Whisperer podcast, host Kristina Orlova sits down with Mike Parker, a licensed clinical social worker and the creator of the popular YouTube channel OCD Space.   Together, they embark on a deep dive into the world of OCD and the transformative power of Inference based cognitive-behavioral therapy (ICBT). But what happens when doubt becomes the driving force behind every thought? And how can someone trapped in the cycle of obsessional doubt ever learn to trust their own mind again?   Mike Parker pulls back the curtain on the insidious nature of "obsessional doubt," a phenomenon that leaves individuals questioning their every thought, memory, and perception. Why do those with OCD feel compelled to seek reassurance over and over, even when they know it offers only fleeting relief? And how does this relentless doubt keep them locked in a prison of their own mind?   As the conversation deepens, Kristina and Mike explore the critical differences between ICBT and exposure and response prevention (ERP). But here's the burning question: Can understanding the origin of obsessive thoughts be the key to breaking free from their grip? Mike sheds light on how inferential confusion and obsessional doubt drive OCD.   This episode is a masterclass in navigating the labyrinth of OCD treatment. Will listeners walk away with a newfound understanding of how to confront their doubts? Or will the complexities of the human mind leave them questioning everything they thought they knew? Tune in to uncover the answers—and perhaps, a path to freedom. In This Episode [00:02]  Introduction to the episode   [00:56]  Understanding ICBT   [02:00]  Obsessional doubt explained   [02:21]  Differentiating ICBT from ERP   [03:36]  The nature of obsessional doubt   [05:58]  Reassurance-seeking behavior   [09:25]  Understanding internal evidence   [11:27]  The role of self-knowledge   [13:31]  General facts vs. personal context   [14:49]  Handling real mistakes   [16:40]  Exploring early memories   [17:46]  Understanding obsessional doubt   [19:22]  Childhood influences on OCD   [20:28]  Clarifying ICBT vs. psychodynamic therapy   [21:44]  Focus of inference-based CBT   [22:41]  Cognitive distortions in OCD   [25:34]  Re-evaluating daily routines   [27:06]  Timeframe for progress in treatment   [29:22]  Complicating factors in OCD treatment   Notable Quotes [00:02:42] "Obsessional doubt is a core process identified in OCD when you're doing I-CBT. It's a thought process where someone with OCD knows something but doesn't trust themselves enough to stick with what they know, leading them to question, dismiss, and seek more information than they have." - Michael Parker   [00:18:26] "We can start to see how long the client has been telling themselves an obsessional story about themselves... It was all logged in there and then all put together, but if we go back, we can see this actually never meant you should be locked into never-ending doubt." - Michael Parker   [00:23:39]"I-CBT is primarily a cognitive therapy... The focus really is figuring out why you reject information, why you don't trust it... Let's figure out why you doubted." — Michael Parker Our Guest Mike Parker, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and private practice therapist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Tom Mangelsen is one of the most gifted and prolific wildlife photographers of our time. He may be best known for documenting the life of Grizzly Bear 399 in and around Teton National Park in Wyoming. I’ve spent thousands of hours alongside, and guiding some of the best wildlife photographers in the world, but I’ve never been lucky enough to spend time in the wild with Tom. And he has always seemed to possess a connection with animals that is rare. Whether it be gorillas, penguins, tigers, or our beloved grizzlies, Tom’s work over the last 50 years captures moments of true nature that inspire people all over the world. I went into our conversation wanting to talk about the most famous bear on earth, but also wanting to understand how he sees the world through his camera lens. What I got was a lesson in being still. You can’t come to Yellowstone without thinking about the grizzly bear. This thriving ancient ecosystem is like a sacred space for them. And a critical source for food which they are constantly in search of in order to get the needed calories that will sustain them through their long winter sleep. But what many grizzly bear lovers might not think about are the fish at the heart of the bear feeding frenzy. Yellowstone has the largest high elevation lake in North America, and under the surface, a fight is going on between the native cutthroat trout and the invasive lake trout. And for a long time the invasive lake trout have been winning the battle, throwing the whole lake’s food chain into disarray. On today’s episode, Chris visits Yellowstone to see how scientists are turning an ecological disaster into a rare invasive species success story, and how the beloved Yellowstone grizzlies are faring amongst this drama. Nestled in southeast Alaska, the stunning and famous Glacier Bay National Park is often called a “living laboratory.” Scientists from all over the world come here to study ecological succession: the step-by-step return of plants, insects, forests and animals. It’s a unique place to do that because just a couple hundred years ago, this whole landscape was covered in ice. But then, the ice started melting, uncovering a clean slate for nature to show us how she creates a flourishing ecosystem. A century ago, a dam was built to harness the power of the water and convert it into electricity. The salmon that the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe relied on were cut off from their spawning grounds. Innovative approaches for the detection of apple scab disease

The UK Agri-Tech Centre conducted a feasibility study with Kent fruit growers, Rumwood Green, and crop protection advisers, Landseer Ltd., on the project - 'Apple Orchard Health: Evaluating Hyperspectral Imagery for Disease Detection and Biostimulant Efficacy' - with funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and UKRI Transforming Food Production Challenge. UK fruit growers are facing a major challenge, exacerbated by the diminishing availability of plant protection products (PPPs) controlling crop disease. The phasing out of traditional PPPs, driven by environmental concerns, has added complexity to this issue. Despite the utilisation of PPPs, UK apple growers experience an annual crop loss of approximately 10-12% due to apple scab, a fungal disease. Without PPPs, this figure would skyrocket to 70-80%. However, there is a promising solution on the horizon by using biostimulants. These are natural substances or micro-organisms that can enhance the natural defences and overall health of the plants when applied to them. One significant challenge of biostimulants is assessing their effectiveness as they operate distinctively from conventional PPPs. Biostimulants serve as preventative measures rather than curative, necessitating timely application before visible disease symptoms emerge. Accurately timing their use is difficult, as the critical phase of scab infection remains invisible to the naked eye. The project aim was to address the challenge of evaluating the effectiveness of biostimulants and timing their usage, by utilising advanced technologies such as hyperspectral cameras and drones. Hyperspectral sensors can capture and analyse a wide range of frequencies of light very finely, which is like being able to accurately identify and measure hundreds of colours outside of what the human eye can see. This provides a detailed and precise characterisation of objects or materials based on the unique way they reflect light, as a spectral fingerprint. By identifying these unique spectral fingerprints for crop diseases, like apple scab, and also determining which can indicate the efficacy of biostimulants, in future, we can develop an affordable camera for growers to be able to detect these fingerprints. This camera will serve as an early warning system, helping prevent disease spread, enhancing crop yield and operational efficiency, and reducing reliance on traditional PPPs. Eliot Dixon, Head of Robotics and AI at the UK Agri-Tech Centre, said, "This was a fast-paced proof of concept project designed to provide evidence for both the efficacy of biostimulant in apple scab control, but also in spectral imaging as a method for detecting apple scab. "For the UK Agri-Tech Centre, this project highlights how our spectral imaging capabilities can be used in product development for both remote sensing and plant protection products. We are very pleased to have successfully shown how lab-based spectral imaging can be successfully transferred to a commercial farm." Michael Parker, Coldstore and Compliance Manager at Rumwood Green Farm Ltd said, "This trial has been very challenging to reproduce results in the field similar to previous in-lab testing of detecting early signs of scab using specific wavelengths. "Despite the challenges, we are a step closer towards early scab detection using the hyperspectral camera. The positive results shown of the biostimulant used will hopefully encourage more growers to use biostimulants as part of their scab control, not only relying on conventional pesticide programs." Stephen Tully, Director at Landseer, said, "With disease control becoming increasingly challenging due to changes in plant protection regulations and unpredictable weather, this project aimed to validate the efficacy of biostimulants to support their routine use and investigate the feasibility of an affordable early detection system for apple scab. Four times in the past decade Lake Abert has completely dried up, a barren lakebed encrusted with salt. Salt lakes are among the world's most threatened ecosystems. Lack of water could lead to many of these lakes permanently drying up in the American West.  But there is one tiny bird that could change all that. The Wilson's Phalarope depends on salt lakes on their 6500-mile migration between North and South America. There is a movement to get the phalarope listed as a threatened species by the federal government as a way to protect the habitat they need to survive. Caroline Tracey is an environment reporter who grew up in the American West - a place that flows through so much of her work. She recently signed a book deal for a memoir about her love of salt lakes - these often-ignored ecosystems that are crucial to the world's water cycle, migratory bird populations, and human health. And it's about the people working in and around our national parks to protect the natural world, while we still can.  This show would not be possible without listener support. Grizzlies coming back to the North Cascades

The Wild

If you've been a longtime listener of THE WILD then you know that I've been a champion of bringing back grizzly bears to the North Cascades of Washington here in the mountains near where I live. On April 25, 2024 that dream has taken a massive step towards becoming reality. The National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service have announced that they will be restoring the grizzly population that called this place home for thousands of years. They were a key part of this ecosystem before they were basically eliminated by humans, so this is their chance to roam these mountains again. The plan is to bring 3-7 grizzly bears in per year for a few years to reach an initial population of twenty-five bears. It's a big milestone.  How we got here is a long and fascinating story. Which is why I wanted to share an episode that we did for THE WILD back in 2019. The 'Ghost Bears' of Washington. I hope it'll give you a little more understanding about grizzlies, the rollercoaster ride it's been here in the North Cascades, and what it will mean to have them back. Hope you enjoy! And if you want to learn more about grizzlies here are links to two short films on the topic that we made a few years ago that have been really popular. Including one about an incredible translocated grizzly bear named Irene!  WANTED: Grizzly Bears? TIME FOR THE GRIZZLY? On this special one hour of THE WILD with Chris Morgan, I'll explore natural silence, and how being quiet out in the natural world and having places to do that can be pretty transformative. I'll also spend time in the trees with a forest therapist and talk to author Florence Williams about the healing powers of nature and I'll go searching for the one of the quietest places in the world in Olympic National Park. THE WILD is a production of KUOW in Seattle in partnership with Chris Morgan Wildlife and Wildlife Media.
