Think you can outwit a dragon with a fake bridge and a charisma check? Welcome to the RPGBOT.Podcast episode where illusions kill, confusion reigns, and disbelief is just a failed Will save away. Show Notes: In this spellbinding episode, the RPGBOT crew explores the mischievous magic of illusions, where what you see may not be what you get—and what you don't see might still sucker-punch your barbarian. Between tactical breakdowns and spontaneous chipmunk tangents, the hosts weave a chaotic yet surprisingly informative tapestry of illusion mechanics, storytelling antics, and system comparisons between Pathfinder 2e, D&D 5e, and even a detour through Final Fantasy materia mechanics. The episode begins with a healthy dose of banter and battlefield survival strategies (spoiler: bolas are back in fashion), before veering headfirst into the world of illusion magic. Expect spirited debates about phantasms, the value of disbelief, and whether players should be required to announce, “I squint suspiciously at the air in front of me” before they're allowed a Will save. From chipmunks being bullied out of neighborhoods by thug squirrels, to Gandalf being played by Fozzie Bear, this episode is a chaotic celebration of how illusion and disguise mechanics shape storytelling, humor, and heartbreak at the gaming table. Plus: learn why DMs should occasionally pretend not to know what's happening... even when they wrote the plot twist. And yes—someone actually asks the important question: “Is it really a good illusion if it doesn't accidentally start a bar fight?” Key Takeaways: Character death matters—especially when caused by a flaming imaginary bridge. Optimization tips: Use bolas. No, seriously. They're hilarious and effective. Chipmunks are rare because squirrels have anger issues. Illusions are not just for mischief—they can dramatically shift combat and story if used (and ruled) well. Phantasms can cause real damage... and even real friendship-ending debates. DMs need to balance illusions to avoid turning a boss fight into a Scooby-Doo episode. Pathfinder 2e provides more clarity on disbelieving illusions than 5e, which mostly says "good luck, champ." Disguises are not illusions, but they can lead to awkward social interactions at royal balls. Illusions can enhance roleplay, story arcs, and character drama—but they need DM discretion. Session zero is a great place to ask, “How weird can my illusions get before the game breaks?” Improvisation is key: Illusions don't always follow the script. Neither should the DM. Muppet recasting of Tolkien characters is an important use of podcast time. Kermit as Frodo. Fozzie as Gandalf. Sam remains unchanged. Materias in Final Fantasy are weird, wild, and somehow relevant to this conversation. Illusions shouldn't ruin the fun—just complicate it in hilarious and meaningful ways. Players rarely remember to ‘study' illusions, so DMs must choose whether to be kind... or let them walk face-first into the dragon's tail. Game mechanics are weird, but that's half the fun. Communication is everything—especially when you're lying to your DM with a straight face.
This week brought emotional farewells and new beginnings, as Disney fans witnessed the closure of Muppet One Last Look at Muppet Courtyard (Grand Avenue) and Muppet Vision 3D Before It Closes ForeverVision 3D and saw fresh concept art for both coasts. As part of the WDW Weekly Update, here's what unfolded. Muppet*Vision 3D Officially Closes. It's official: MuppetVision 3D* has closed its doors at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Sam and Greg take a final stroll through the attraction, sharing behind-the-scenes views and paying tribute to the classic. Alongside video highlights and personal memories, we break down the Top 10 Quotes from Muppet*Vision 3D—including Fozzie's “banana cream pie”, Sam Eagle's patriotic finale, and Statler and Waldorf's relentless heckling. Fans of Jim Henson's legacy won't want to miss this nostalgic send-off. New Courtyard Concept Art Debuts With the attraction officially closed, new concept art has appeared on the construction walls surrounding the former Muppet Vision area. The updated visuals reflect a slight tweak in the Monsters Inc. Land. Compared to previous art shared at D23, this version shows a tweaked courtyard layout. The coaster show building remains part of the vision, but its placement is deeper into the backlot, creating breathing room between adjacent structures. Though Disney renamed the area Grand Avenue, it remains Muppet Courtyard in the hearts of fans. These changes mark a complete transformation of the area, setting the stage for something new while bringing to a close a legacy location. Disneyland Concept Art Expands the Story Over at Disneyland Resort, new concept art is adding layers to the park's 70th anniversary narrative. Updates to the entrance plaza include widened paths, revised landscaping, and what appears to be preparation for future infrastructure changes. However, the primary concern remains the Avatar experience. New visuals indicate how it might integrate into Disneyland's footprint, fueling speculation over land use and attraction placement. Additional Park Highlights Back at Magic Kingdom, The Emporium is fully restocked, and VIPassholder character meet and greets are in full swing. The Hall of Presidents has reopened its lobby with updated historical exhibits. Meanwhile, both Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Belle Riverboat are set to close in July, giving guests one last chance to experience these peaceful Magic Kingdom staples. At Epcot, Test Track walls are down and testing is underway. The UK pavilion's pianist now performs at the Odyssey, and Annual Passholders are meeting Dopey thanks to new AP-exclusive offerings. Watch the Full Episode Catch every quote, visual update, and on-site report in this week's full episode of Sam's Disney Diary on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ijYc0rM7Pk Streamed LIVE on June 11, 2025 — Join Sam and Greg every Wednesday at 9 pm ET for This Week at Walt Disney World, where we break down the latest in parks, popcorn, and beyond!

Show notes: For this episode I attended the first ever MidSouth Mega Con at the Memphis Sports & Event Center located in the Memphis Fairgrounds. I was at this inaugural con to man the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and record a few interviews over the holiday weekend. I got to talk toons with local artists including Ryan Ladner, Shane Luttrell, That Katie Jones, Peter Melonas, Dr. Kevin Thorn, MSCA president Kevin L. Williams, and MCFC co-organizer/"Geek Tank Radio" co-host Brandon Olmstead. Kev brought along some of his Muppet friends- Kermit, Fozzie, and Grover. We handed out a lot of MSCA stickers and postcards, and even sold a few zines! There was lots of great cosplay, including our table neighbors The 731 Ghostbusters and Star Trek fan group Station Shelby. We loved getting t meet the amazing animals from the Soft Landings of Tennessee waterfowl rescue, and the awesomely chill pup from the GameOver Arcade in Southaven, MS. We also got to meet actors Reb Brown/Captain America, Sean Patrick Flanery/Young Indiana Jones, and legendary voice actor Billy West/Ren & Stimpy. (You can see pics on our MSCA Facebook page.)The space was huge, clean, and had great lighting and A/C. There's plenty of room for this con to expand for next year. The Memphis weather was definitely frightful outside, but it was dry and comfortable inside. This fall Memphis Comic Expo will be at this same event center in September. I'll have a table at DonnieCon for the first time in a few years. Between the pandemic, travel, and other show commitments I haven't been able to table there since probably 2018 at the AgCenter. Looking forward to MCX being at this new location. This Saturday, May 31st is the third annual Memphis Libraries Comic Con at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library - 3030 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38111. I'll be set up at this free event along with several MSCA members 10am-3pm. GOH is Chris Parnell. Oh, our next monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza is this Tuesday, June 3rd from 6-8pm, and our deadline to turn in art for next month's art show at Playhouse on the Square. “Around the swimming beagles, bright stars danced on rippling waters like a thousand little fishes of light scurrying in a sea of darkness. Can there be a more beautiful sight than when sky meets ocean in the black of night?” The lawyer whispered to himself, the beagles, and the sea as the soft blanket of summer wrapped them all in her warm embrace.Night is a time of reflection. Not of stars in water only, but of times past and times to come. And such a night was this.”– Beagles of Destinae, chapter 4Ideas pour into the dark waters of the unconscious mind, sparkling like reflected stars. As above, so below. The natives always said it was so.But as Gemini sat on the throne of Aquarius, a dragonfish was born. And thus our story begins. The twins did not mean to unleash a dragonfish, but they had never promised not to, either. And besides, a dragonfish is an adventure.Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea,and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,And brought him strings, and sealing wax, and other fancy stuff.Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail.Noble kings and princes would bow whenever they came,Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name.A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys,Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys. One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more,And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.“Puff the Magic Dragon” with lyrics by Leonard Lipton and music by Peter Yarrow appears on the 1963 Peter, Paul and Mary album, “Moving.” An urban myth soon arose that the song was about drugs. It's really a backward look at childhood, and all that was left behind.“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart. All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.”– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry“He saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.'”– Luke, ch. 5The book “Peter Pan” was written only after the 1904 play became a huge success. On opening night, Mrs. Snow spoke to the playwright and author, J.M. Barrie about her late husband…“And he would so have loved this evening. The pirates, and the Indians; he was really just a boy himself, you know, to the very end. I suppose it's all the work of the ticking crocodile, isn't it? Time is chasing after all of us. Isn't that right?”“It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old; they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”– Gabriel Garcia Marquez“The secret of The Muppets is they re not very good at what they do. Kermit's not a great host, Fozzie's not a good comedian, Miss Piggy's not a great singer… Like, none of them are actually good at it, but they love it. They're like a family, and they like putting on the show. And they have joy. And because of the joy, it doesn't matter that they're not good at it. That's what we should all be. Muppets.”– Brett Goldstein“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust…If growing up means it would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up.”– Peter
I grew up on Route 66 and have road trips in my veins. I've driven all over this great country, visited every single state and seen thousands of interesting things. Nothing inspires me more than a good road trip film — if you're the same way, check out one of this week's recommendations. All of the my picks on this week's list are pretty well known, which makes them so much fun to revisit. If you haven't seen one or all of them in a few years, what better time to revisit them?Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)There's nothing Pee-wee Herman loves more than his bicycle. Unfortunately for him, spoiled frenemie Francis Buxton loves it to, and hires someone to steal it for him. A distraught Pee-wee organizes a search party to find his bicycle and eventually hits the road and crosses multiple states in search of his irreplicable bike. Join Pee-wee and all the friends he meets along the way as he goes on his adventure. The Muppet Movie (1979)Life's like a movie, write your own ending! In the first full-length Muppet film, Kermit is convinced by a lost agent to head to Hollywood to fulfill his dream of making millions of people happy. Along his journey, Kermit meets a joke-telling bear named Fozzie, a weirdo named Gonzo, a rock band called the Electric Mayhem (led by Dr. Teeth), and the world's most beautiful women, Miss Piggy. Will Kermit and his friends reach Hollywood before Doc Hopper catches Kermit and forces him to become the mascot for his restaurant? I hope so, because there are a lot more Muppet movies after this one! The NeverEnding Story (1984)While hiding from school bullies, young Bastion acquires a book promising a never ending story and skips school, hiding in the attic to read it. The book tells the story of Atreyu and his quest to save Fantasia from a darkness known as The Nothing. The more Bastian reads, the more it seems his own life is becoming entertwined with the book itself! Featuring a hit theme song and a luck dragon, The NeverEnding Story is a journey not to be missed. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)If you've ever gone on a road trip, either as a child or a parent, you'll relate to the Griswolds as they drive across the country in their new station wagon from Chicago to Wallyworld! Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron, and Randy Quaid, and featuring cameos from comedians including Eugene Levy and John Candy, among others. As a kid I identified as oldest sibling Rusty, and as a parent I can't help but see a little bit of Clark in the rearview mirror.Spring is here and there's no better time to roll down your windows, put the pedal to the metal, and hit the open road. If you can't fit a road trip into your current schedule, watching one of these movies about journeys is the next best thing! This is a public episode. Light the lamp, not the rat! Light the lamp, not the rat! For a special Christmas episode of NostalgiaCast, Jonny and Darin are joined by author/artist Ruth Harris Craddock for a spirited discussion of THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, directed by Brian Henson and starring Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, and Sir Michael Caine as arguably the big-screen's definitive Ebenezer Scrooge. They chat about the movie as a faithful adaptation of Dickens's classic story (with Muppets!) and how Caine's decision to play Scrooge as "utterly dramatic" adds to its sincerity and fun. God bless us, every one!
Are you convinced by Razor yet? Cause I feel you should be, because what Razor has managed to do on this northern tour has been pretty impressive. If the All Blacks beat Italy this weekend - which apparently they will because it's supposed to be a foregone conclusion - then we can say the All Blacks have come within one point of a clean sweep of the northern tour. Which is remarkable, because we haven't done a clean sweep of the northern tour since 2017. Now obviously, we haven't done it this time either. But we've come within one point, which is impressive because this is Razor's first year. He's taken over a team that, frankly, sucked a lot of the time. I mean, don't forget why we wanted to get rid of Fozzie. The All Blacks were all over the show - they lost a series at home to the Irish, they got smashed 26-10 by the Springboks, and then there was the Twickenham disaster where the 'Boks smacked us 35-7. So it's actually not bad to turn those performances into a very-nearly clean sweep of the northern tour in just one year. Now look, let's not pretend it's perfect out there, because it isn't. The discipline's a major problem, there was that weird call to try for two penalties in the last six minutes of a game - where they obviously should have gone for a try, that was the wrong call. And we're talking about wins, but they're not exactly massive margins. But let's be fair - think of any other discipline out there. Think of a business where a CEO takes over, you don't expect perfection in the first year, you just expect improvement. And I think we've got it. I think we can say that short of something horrible happening this weekend, Razor's proved himself. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Jim Henson Month on In Search of the Crystal Skull. In honor of the recent Disney+ documentary, Jim Henson: Idea Man, Arun and Patricia look back at Jim Henson's films. The first one is the 1981 film The Great Muppet Caper, the second film in The Muppets movie series. Kermit and Fozzie are twin brothers who are newspaper reporters and their friend and co-worker Gonzo is a photographer. After failing to cover a report where a fashion designer named Lady Holiday had her jewelry stolen, they are at the brink of losing their jobs. They beg their boss to give them a second chance and they travel to England to interview her. Meanwhile, Miss Piggy wishes to become one of Lady Holiday's models, but makes her her assistant instead. In a series of events, Miss Piggy is the primary suspect of stealing Lady Holiday's jewelry. It's up to Kermit, Gonzo, Fozzie, and the rest of the inhabitants of the Happiness Hotel to prove Miss Piggy's innocence and capture the real thieves. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $31 million dollars out of a $14 million dollar budget receiving mixed to positive reviews from critics and viewers saying that there are some memorable moments, but the plot wasn't as engaging compared to The Muppet Movie. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

IT'S TIME TO WATCH THE MUPPETS! This week with special guest Johnny Cash. Distracted rants include but are not limited to The Master of Disguise, Walk the Line, Randy Savage, trend forecasting, burning cds, Ghost World, Windrush, and much more!"In honor of Johnny Cash's appearance, the show is simulcast over country radio station WHOG, and the radio broadcast threatens to overwhelm the actual show. The head of WHOG, Big Tiny Tall Saddle, insists on making all the decisions. He refuses to let Rowlf go on, and instead schedules Grampaw McGuire and his whistling bricks. Kermit tries to run his own show, but Big Tiny is one of the toughest men alive -- when he's annoyed, he has a habit of wrapping microphone stands around people's necks. Fozzie is replaced by Big Tiny's nephew, Wally Whoopie, a stand-up comedian who makes fun of the bear -- which inspires Kermit to stand up for his friend, and his show."Follow us:Twitter.com/ittwtmInstagram.com/ittwtm
What's up, dudes? Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House and I take a trip to Emily Bear's house to visit the Muppets! That's right! We're talking the 1987 special "A Muppet Family Christmas"! We get into obscure cameos, Sam Eagle's one-liners, and more! Kermit and the gang travel to Fozzie's mom's house to surprise her for Christmas. Little do they know that Emily Bear has planned a vacation and has rented her house to Doc and Sprocket as an air BnB. The sheer volume has Doc building bunk beds to accommodate the crowds. Fozzie builds the perfect comedic partner snowman, and the Swedish Chef invites a turkey to stay with them in the hopes of cooking him for dinner. After watching a Muppet Babies home video, Gonzo almost gets into a fight with the lecherous turkey. The Sesame Street crew wassails into the farmhouse, and Kermit and Robin pass it on with the Fraggles. When Piggy is caught in a snowstorm, Doc rides to her rescue! Then the annual carol sing ensues!A "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" play? Check. An Electric Mayhem performance? Got it. A two-headed monster Santa? Yes, but only if the other monsters pull the sleigh! The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
We can be grumpy about the restaurant experience. This self-awareness is key, especially when we realize that our behavior closely resembles the behavior of two grouchy Muppets heckling Kermit and Fozzie from the balcony. However, it's easy to see that every business can learn from restaurants that bungle these moments of the experience. We are aware this episode is a grumpy rant. Moreover, not everyone will agree with the things that we think restaurants do wrong. What drives us mad could be the very thing you love most. However, the fact we differ on these points demonstrates a critical overarching theme of this podcast: segmentation matters, and accommodation is key to deliver an excellent experience. Restaurants that choose to ignore these criticisms have a right to do so. Moreover, if they prefer to cater to a specific segment of customer that prefers the way they do things, that is their prerogative. Some restaurants have been extremely successful by doing this and we do not fault them for it. We don't eat there either, but that's beside the point. In this episode, what we hope to achieve by airing our grievances is to point out how these moments in the restaurant experience demonstrate moments that every experience design could have. For your business vertical, whatever it may be, we hope that the common experiences of dining out—or ordering to go—help illustrate these concepts and help you improve your experience. Plus, it sometimes feels good to complain. Here are some other key moments in the discussion: 03:41 Colin kicks off the complaints by pointing out that some restaurants do not understand the business they are in, and therefore, do not send the right signals with their experience. 06:39 Ryan describes a restaurant experience that could use a little spruce up in the post-pandemic takeout vs. dine in experience. 11:32 We discuss the importance of managing the key interactions in an experience by properly training the team to put customers first so people remember that experiences can be time well-spent. 16:29 We remind our listeners that the little things add up and can burn you in the customer's evaluation of how you did at the end of the experience. 19:17 Colin refers to an article out of Cornell that explains how what restaurants leave off the menu cause customers to spend more than they would have thought. 24:30 We summarize what we would change about these things that drive us mad at restaurants and that you can apply to your experience, too. _________________________________________________________________ Did you know we have a YouTube Channel too? IT'S TIME TO WATCH THE MUPPETS! This week with special guest Brooke Shields. Distracted rants include but are not limited to Princeton University, Michelle Obama, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Humpty Dumpty, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, Stephnie Weir, Timothée Chalamet, and much more!"Brooke stars as Alice in the Muppet production of Alice in Wonderland. The onstage zaniness can't match the usual backstage chaos -- Fozzie thinks he's going to play the Tin Woodman, and Miss Piggy (scheduled to play the Queen of Hearts) is hoping to take over as Alice.Bunsen's special effects make Brooke too tall to leave her dressing room -- and then shrink her so small that no one can find her. Piggy, still hoping for the lead, tries to "accidentally" step on Brooke. Finally, Gonzo as the Mad Hatter heads the Mad Tea Party, which ends with a rousing chorus of "We're Off to See the Wizard.""Follow us:Twitter.com/ittwtmInstagram.com/ittwtm

In a rare trip to the 1970s, Big D and Gene examine the Jim Henson film that started it all: "The Muppet Movie." Sharing a respect for the wild characters and expert puppeteering in this 1979 road comedy, the Shat Crew digs into the surprisingly adult themes, delightfully quiet jokes and clever self-awareness. On the other hand, "The Muppet Movie" drags at times before culminating in a gorgeous ensemble ending. In this episode, the Shat Crew covers a real-life Orson Welles, songs that go on too long, "The Muppet Movie" legacy and whether Animal is overrated.
