Sunny. No Rain. Game Delayed. The Field Science Behind the Delay at Impact Field — Chicago Dogs vs. Winnipeg Goldeyes, July 5, 2026It's sunny. The radar is clean. Not a drop of rain is falling. And the game is delayed 1 hour 45 minutes. Here's why — and why the history of this land made it almost inevitable.=== WHAT HAPPENED ===The Chicago Dogs owner addressed fans, offered refunds to everyone staying and free future tickets to anyone who left. Fans played catch on the field while the grounds crew applied calcined clay conditioner to firm up the surface. New first pitch: 4:45 PM CDT.=== THE RAINFALL DISCREPANCY ===Owner cited ~6 inches. Official NWS O'Hare CF6 record shows:- July 2: 1.64"- July 3: 1.71"- July 4 storm: ~3" at O'Hare per MWRD/NWS (after morning obs cutoff)- Month-to-date through July 4: 3.53" officialMWRD confirmed the McCook TARP system (Cook County flood control) filled 6 times this year — more than the prior 5 years combined.Local field-level measurements at Impact Field, a low-lying site, likely exceeded the airport gauge. The real total near the stadium: 3.5–6 inches over several days.=== WHY THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM WASN'T ENOUGH ===Roger Bossard's celebrated drainage system handles 1 inch / 64,000 gallons on the playing surface in 20–25 minutes — from an acute single event. When the soil column is cumulatively saturated over multiple days, it reaches "field capacity" — gravity drainage stops, the subbase has no remaining capacity, and the surface loses structural support from below. The top layer looks dry. The field is sunny. But the turf will slide and give way under lateral force, creating serious injury risk.=== THE CONDITIONER ===Calcined clay (Turface MVP or Diamond Dry) — kiln-fired at ~1800°F, becomes highly porous and absorbs surface moisture rapidly. Addresses the top 2–3 inches only. Under a lake breeze, firms the surface in 45–90 minutes.=== ROSEMONT'S FLOODING HISTORY ===The Village of Rosemont incorporated in 1956 partly to address flooding. Willow Creek flooded so regularly that rowboats were a household necessity. First village president Donald Stephens made correcting flooding a founding mission. The Impact Field site sits on that same low-lying Chicago lake plain between I-294 and O'Hare.=== 2018 FLOODING AT IMPACT FIELD ===September 3, 2018 — the first season. 2.5 inches fell in 25 minutes. Fans were evacuated. Documented by Live Storms Media: "Insane CG barrage and flooding at Impact Field." This is why Bossard built what he built.=== CURRENT WEATHER (as of ~3 PM CDT) ===NWS AFD issued 1:52 PM CDT by forecaster Doom: "Latest satellite trends show no distinct signs of new development anywhere around the area — confidence to there being little to no impacts north of I-80." HRRR, GFS, ECMWF all show dry conditions at Rosemont through the evening. The 4:45 PM game should be played in sunshine.=== SOURCES ===- NWS O'Hare CF6: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=LOT&issuedby=ORD&product=CF6- MWRD TARP storm update July 4: https://mwrd.org/news/1030-am-storm-update-mwrds-tarp-systems-manages-heavy-rainfall- NWS Chicago AFD: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=LOT&issuedby=LOT&product=AFD- Rosemont history / Willow Creek flooding: Encyclopedia of Chicago- 2018 Impact Field flooding: Live Storms Media (YouTube, Sept 3 2018)Tags: weather, Chicago Dogs, Impact Field, Rosemont, rain delay, baseball, field science, soil saturation, groundskeeping, calcined clay, Turface, NWS Chicago, flooding, Chicago historyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weather-with-enthusiasm--4911017/support.Weather with Enthusiasm is produced by Kol Simcha Productions.New episodes drop daily (B'N)— a morning forecast at 7 AM and historical deep dives Tuesdays and Thursdays. Contact: kolsimchaproductions@outlook.comHistorical content is thoroughly researched and factually verified. Chicago Soul Jazz Collective выпустил свой четвертый альбом No Wind & No Rain - Без ветра и без дождя. 1. Ibtihal Reda Mahmood, editor and translator of the anthology Snow in Amman: An Anthology of Short Stories from Jordan joins us to talk both about the Jordanian literary landscape from the 1940s to now, as well as her personal relationship with Jordanian writers and books. We talk particularly about the iconic feminist and master of the short-story form Basma Nsour, and how Ibtihal came across her work as a pre-teen; the late, gifted, and generous Amjad Nasser, whose work still needs further translation; and the great Abdulrahman Munif's Story of a City, which describes his childhood in the Jordanian capital of Amman during the 1940s.   SHOW NOTES Abdulrahman Munif's Story of a City was translated by Samira Kawar and published by Quartet books in 1997.   There is no book-length collection of Basma El-Nsour's work in translation, but there are many stories available online: at ArabLit, The Common, and elsewhere.   Amjad Nasser's incredible poetry collection Petra was translated by Fady Joudah. His Land of No Rain was translated by Jonathan Wright. The twentieth century Jordanian classics that made the list of the “105 Best Novels of the 20th Century,” as voted by the Arab writers union, were: Sultanah, by Jordanian author Ghalib Halasa, Confessions of a Silencer, by Jordanian writer Mu'nis al-Razzaz, and Essential Pillars, by the Jordanian author Elias Farkouh.   Although many Jordanian books elide place, one novel that shows the landscape of contemporary Jordan is Ma'an Abu Taleb's All the Battles, which was translated by Robin Moger.   You can subscribe to BULAQ wherever you get your podcasts. The Big Debate: Stress vs. Deficiency In Crops - RDA 501

Red Dirt Agronomy Podcast

Recorded live at KNID AgriFest in Enid from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission booth, Episode 501 launches Season 5 with a fast-paced crop check and a whole lot of agronomy banter. Dave Deken sits down with Brian Arnall and Josh Lofton to talk January wheat realities: dry conditions, odd winter insect pressure, and early reports of wheat diseases showing up sooner than anyone wants. They also hit canola concerns—like that purple color—and what to inspect right now (new leaves and crown health) as everyone looks ahead to green-up.Next, it's go-time thinking for topdress: why timing, weather, and surface conditions matter—especially when warm days, wind, and dew can increase nitrogen losses. Then the conversation turns into a practical deep dive on plant physiology and decision-making: primordia (the “cells in waiting”), how early-season stress can differ from true deficiency, and why chasing genetic potential without respecting environmental limits can hurt ROI. If you like your agronomy with real-world nuance (and a little friendly arguing), this one's for you!Top 10 takeawaysJanuary crop scouting can be misleading—weather swings can make fields look great or “go backwards” fast.Warm winter + dry stretch = unusual pest pressure, including armyworms in wheat.Early disease reports (tan spot, rust, powdery mildew) mean don't assume “it's too early.”For canola right now, focus on new leaves and crown—that's your “are we okay today?” check.Green-up moisture is the hinge point for both wheat tillering and canola recovery.Topdress timing is a system problem (acres, co-op schedules) and a weather-loss problem (dew + warm + wind). If conditions are right to lose N (dry soil + dew/humidity + wind), waiting can be the most profitable move.A lot of management is about what's happening inside the plant—primordia/cell division—before you ever see it.Stress can be useful; deficiency is where you start giving away yield potential—context (stage/goal) matters. The “right” program depends on your risk profile: protecting max yield vs protecting ROI on inputs.Detailed timestamped rundown00:00–01:15 — Welcome to Episode 501 + Season 5 vibes; shoutout to AgriFest and the Wheat Commission cinnamon-roll traffic.01:16–01:55 — Introductions: Dave Deken with Dr. Brian Arnall and Dr. Josh Lofton; “we were arguing in our office earlier…”01:46–02:10 — Recorded Jan 9, 2026 at the Oklahoma Wheat Commission booth during AgriFest in Enid.02:10–03:05 — Cinnamon roll banter + meeting listeners at the booth.03:07–04:20 — Crop update headline: it's January, it hasn't rained, it feels like June; armyworms in wheat; disease confirmations in SW OK.05:01–06:20 — Canola check: purple color mystery; focus on new leaves + crown health “right now.”06:35–08:10 — “Magic windows” talk: green-up moisture is critical for canola and wheat tillering.09:03–10:30 — Rooting + grazing: planting timing affects anchoring; some fields pull easier under cattle.10:45–12:55 — Topdress season starts early for many; best efficiency late Jan–March; avoid warm/windy/dewy days that can increase N loss (they cite “blow off 15–25%”).13:00–16:55 — What if winter doesn't get cold? Daylength and growth timing; discussion on how wide the N window really is.17:00–22:10 — OSU NPK blog topic: managing “primordia” (cells-in-prep), not just what you see aboveground.22:10–25:20 — Corn example: by V6 you've set rows/potential kernels; stress/deficiency can reduce grain number.28:50–41:10 — Main debate: stress vs deficiency, “leaf deficient but not the plant,” and Liebig's Law barrel analogy.44:20–48:10 — Genetic vs environmental potential, realized yield; precision vs accuracy; risk aversion (yield loss vs input cost).49:40–50:17 — Wrap + resources at reddirtagronomy.com. ...oder auf Englisch «No Rain, No Flowers». No Rain, No Flowers» hervor.

Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Rogers Stevens of Blind Melon joins us for an in-depth conversation about the band's past, present, and future. Rogers reflects on Blind Melon's upcoming performance at the Pig and Whiskey Festival in St. Louis on Friday, May 9, where they'll be sharing the stage with Smash Mouth, and also looks ahead to a major milestone: the band's first-ever show at Red Rocks while supporting O.A.R. Rogers shares stories from Blind Melon's early days, including their struggles to break through, the cultural phenomenon of “No Rain,” and the bittersweet reality of being labeled a "one-hit wonder." He opens up about pivotal moments in the band's journey, from navigating the music industry's highs and lows to overcoming the tragedy of losing their iconic frontman, Shannon Hoon—a gifted songwriter whose legacy still shapes the band's music and message today. We also dive into Blind Melon's evolution, their move to New Orleans, and how the city's jazz scene—including artists like Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band—inspired tracks like “Lemonade.” Rogers gives insight into the meaning behind songs like “Skinned,” and how the band blends upbeat melodies with deeper, sometimes darker, lyrical themes. This is a must-watch for fans of Blind Melon, 90s alt-rock, and those curious about the resilience and reinvention of one of rock's most unique and heartfelt bands.
