Okay, real talk. Those generic "must-have" lists all over Pinterest and home-building blogs set you up to build a house that might have some cool features, but most likely won't even work for YOUR family's lifestyle. In this episode, I'm spilling the truth about why there are NO universal must-haves when building a custom home, and I'm sharing the four questions that'll help you figure out what YOUR family actually needs (spoiler: it's probably way different than what those lists tell you). We'll cover:Why that mudroom everyone's obsessing over might be completely pointless for your lifestyleReal stories from families who ignored the "rules" and built homes that actually work for themHow to stop second-guessing yourself and create a must-have list based on your real life, not Pinterest dreamsThe difference between features that look amazing and ones that actually make your daily routine betterBottom line ... this is YOUR custom home. YOU get to decide what goes in it based on what makes YOUR life easier and happier ... not what some blog says you "must" have.
This week on Two Parents & A Podcast — we're sharing our top 5 must-haves for traveling with a baby (under 12 months)! Tate's officially been on a TON of flights, and we're finally feeling like we have it down. From our new 20-minute buffer rule (the stroller ALWAYS sets off the alarm) to maintaining routine with a few key constants, this list is fully battle-tested after 3 straight weeks of travel (ps. yes, we are happy to be home). We also talk about the playroom updates (spoiler: we might be going a little overboard, but it's truly magical) and other home updates (how many times can I say Sherwin-Williams Pure White?? lol). Plus, we revisit last week's convo about the power of perspective—and unpack the difference between reframing and toxic positivity. In Things We DMed Each Other: an overemployed remote worker with a wild secret, TSA FINALLY ending the shoe removal policy, and a quick “Fail of the Week” involving a barbershop mishap (s/o to the very patient barber— but also, drop your thoughts on Harrison's half-finished haircut
Americans have a long history of obsession with the ultrarich, from Carnegie and Rockefeller to Bezos and Musk. And today, the gap between the rich and the poor is bigger than ever as the billionaire class has ascended to new heights. In his new book, The Haves and Have-Yachts, New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos explores the extravagant lifestyles of the wealthy and their outsize influence on politics. He sat down with Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu to talk about this unique moment — when billionaires are both resented and envied by the public — and what it means for the rest of us.
Send us a textWe tackle how writing effective job requirements can transform your veterinary clinic's hiring success by focusing on potential rather than unrealistic wishlists. The perfect veterinary team member often doesn't check every box but brings the right attitude and growth mindset to thrive in your specific environment. What Julie South covers in this episode:• Too many job adverts read like impossible wishlists rather than realistic requirements• Understanding the crucial difference between absolute "must-haves" and developable "nice-to-haves"• Use the test: "Would I hire someone perfect in every other way who lacks this requirement?"• Lead with growth potential instead of demanding specific experience levels• Be specific about what communication and skills actually look like in your practice• Show jobseekers the path to developing "nice-to-have" skills at your clinic• Avoid the experience trap - more years doesn't automatically equal better fit• Success comes from focusing on what someone needs to thrive in your specific environment• Writing your requirements in your own words attracts professionals who understand your actual needsReady to write job requirements that attract the right veterinary professionals without scaring people away? Maturity is not about what we know but what we do with what we know. We could memorize the bible word for word, watch every sermon and read every book on theology there is; but if we never apply what we learn to our lives, we'll never be transformed. We could risk having all the head knowledge and never growing into the people God calls us to be. In this sermon, Pastor Byron Ellis gives us five must haves for spiritual maturity. As we grow, God in all His goodness not only renews us, but also uses our transformation to touch the lives of others, save lost souls and bring glory to His name.

Have you ever been reading scripture and wondered, “That seems weird,” or “I wonder what that means”? I know I have more than once stumbled over certain verses. Right after Jesus taught the crowd the parable of the sower, his disciples asked Him why he taught that way. In his response, Jesus says something that seems strange or, to some, even harsh. Jesus said that those who have more will be given, but to those who do not have, even that will be taken away. That verse has always bugged me, but not enough to really dig into it, until now. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing from you this Sunday as we ask God to reveal to us what this means for us. Dr. Bill Smith

Having It ALL: Conversations about living an Abundant Loving Life
Ever find yourself stuck in the same kind of relationship drama—even when you swore it'd be different this time? In this episode, I'm breaking down seven relationship must-haves that go way deeper than communication skills or love languages. These are the tools I wish someone had handed me years ago—before I got tangled up in relationships that looked good on paper but left me feeling lost, drained, or straight-up stuck. We're talking about the internal work most people skip: knowing your mission, owning your values, getting clear on your standards, and having the guts to hold them. Because here's the truth—if you're not grounded in who you are and what you stand for, you'll always be at the mercy of someone else's wave. This isn't theory. I lived it. And it wasn't until I did the work—with my wife Sarah, and on my own—that I understood what truly fuels a thriving partnership. Whether you're in a relationship, healing from one, or gearing up for the next, these seven tools will help you stop defaulting to old patterns and start building something real—something powerful—something that lasts. A mega-donor to the Republican Presidential campaign, Elon Musk got something no other titan of industry has ever received: an office in the White House and a government department tailor-made for him, with incalculable influence in shaping the Administration. But even with Musk out of Washington, it remains a fact that the influence of wealth in America has never been greater. As one case in point, Donald Trump's “big beautiful bill” is estimated to raise or leave flat the taxes of about 57 million households, while the top five per cent of earners will have their taxes cut by more than $1.5 trillion. From his perch in Washington, Evan Osnos has for years been looking at the politics of hyper-wealth. While the wealthy have always held outsized influence, Osnos explains how tech tycoons, in particular, sought far greater influence under Donald Trump's second Administration. “These are guys who really believed that they were the greatest example of entrepreneurship,” he tells David Remnick, “and that all of a sudden they found that, no, they were being called monopolists, that they were being accused of invading people's privacy, that in fact they had been blamed for the degradation of democracy, of our children's emotional health, of our attention spans. They suddenly saw that there was a new President who would not only forgive any of those kinds of mistakes and patterns of abuse but would in fact celebrate them, and would roll back any of the regulation that was in their way.” Osnos's new book, collected from his reporting in The New Yorker, is “The Haves and Have-Yachts: Dispatches on the Ultrarich.”

There are more billionaires now than ever before. We know their names, Mark Zuckerberg, Peter Theil, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos. But we don't really know their lives. We share the same planet, but they occupy a different world. The New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos began writing about the uber rich when Americans who professed disdain for billionaires then elected one as President. His essays come together in a book that offers a rare view from the penthouse that reveals the habits, fixations and obsessions of the very rich and how they see the rest of us. The book is called "The Haves and the Have-Yachts: Dispatches on the Ultrarich."
Send us a textHello and welcome to our show. In this episode, we kick things off with a hair-raising new trend—literally. People are spending big bucks on designer hair ties, and we ask: have we officially lost it?Then we tackle a question every garage and junk drawer begs—do we have too much stuff? Spoiler alert: the answer is yes, and it might be time for a yard sale (or a dumpster).Next up, we fire up the grill and dive into summer barbecue expectations. How many cookouts are enough, what foods must be on the table, and which drinks and games make it a party? We've got the stats, laughs, and probably a craving for hot dogs. And finally—hold it if you can—we end with a wild ride through the worst bathroom scenarios you hope you'll never encounter. Author Evan Osnos joins Joanna Coles to parse the twisted games the world's wealthiest play with and aboard their crazy expensive yachts. As tech billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg snap up megayachts, Osnos, author of 'The Haves and Have-Yachts,' unpacks what these floating palaces reveal about a seismic shift in American wealth and power. He explains why Donald Trump shut down the KleptoCapture task force, how oligarch envy shapes Trump's worldview, and what it means that he once owned a Saudi arms dealer's yacht—but hated being on it. From Adnan Khashoggi to Elon Musk, Osnos traces the rise of ostentatious wealth, the decline of discretion, and why the modern billionaire isn't satisfied with private jets—they also want political control. Plus, how Musk crossed a line even Andrew Carnegie didn't, and why Americans may finally be waking up to a new, gilded threat. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Following Donald Trump's election in 2016, New Yorker reporter Evan Osnos wanted to understand what the president's wealth and status represented in the minds of his supporters – and in American culture at large. Osnos began reporting on the lives of the ultrawealthy, including the small but growing billionaire class. Now, Osnos has published a collection of essays The Haves and Have-Yachts, which explores the American relationship to immense wealth through anecdotes about superyachts, private concerts with pop stars, and doomsday preppers. In today's episode, Osnos speaks with NPR's Frank Langfitt about widening inequality, status anxieties among oligarchs, and what it feels like to live in a new Gilded Age.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

“Let me tell you about the very rich”, Scott Fitzgerald once said. “They are different from you and me”. One way they are different, the New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos reports, is that they own yachts - very very big, expensive yachts. In The Haves and The Have-Yachts, Osnos' dispatches about today's ultrarich, he takes us on board these boats to reveal the obscenity of our new gilded age. From Mark Zuckerberg's obsession with Augustus Caesar to the thin-skinned grievances of figures like Marc Andreessen and Elon Musk, Osnos explores how the personal quirks and anxieties of just 19 American plutocrats - the 0.00001% - are now reshaping our entire society. He argues we're living in an era of "flamboyant oligarchy," where billionaires openly flaunt their wealth. Citing the extraordinary tableau of tech moguls lining up in homage to Trump at his inauguration, Osnos describes our age as "the complete and total fusion of politics and plutocracy in the United States." five key takeaways1. We're Living in an Era of "Flamboyant Oligarchy" Unlike past wealthy elites who stayed hidden ("a whale that never surfaces doesn't get harpooned"), today's billionaires openly compete for attention and flaunt their wealth, fundamentally changing the relationship between extreme wealth and public life.2. Just 19 People Could Control 18% of America's Wealth The 0.00001% - currently 19 Americans - control 1.8% of national wealth today. If current trends continue, this could reach 18% within 40 years, representing an unprecedented concentration of economic power in human history.3. Personal Quirks Have Massive Social Consequences Billionaires' individual obsessions and blind spots shape society at scale - from Facebook being blue because Zuckerberg is colorblind, to his Augustus Caesar fixation influencing how he thinks about power and empire-building.4. The Complete Fusion of Politics and Plutocracy Trump's inauguration, featuring tech moguls "lined up in homage," represents the total merger of political and economic power in America - what Osnos calls a "sultanistic oligarchy" where billionaires have elevated Trump to rule on their behalf.5. Billionaires Are Surprisingly Thin-Skinned and Aggrieved Despite their wealth, figures like Musk and Andreessen are easily offended and resentful about public criticism, leading them not to retreat but to actively seek control over politics and media to reshape the narrative in their favor. There's more billionaires in the world now than ever before. And as wealth is concentrated into the hands of a small group of people, the power of those select few is also growing – particularly in the US, where billionaires have been getting more and more access to Donald Trump. The journalist Evan Osnos tells Matt Galloway about the influence and excesses of the .01%, which he charts in his new book, The Haves and the Have Yachts.
There are less than 1,000 billionaires in the U.S. Why do they matter so much? New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos joins Preet to discuss his new book, “The Haves and Have-Yachts,” which paints a broad portrait of the lives of the ultrarich, the state of American oligarchy, and the dire wealth disparity in this country. We're welcoming Bloomberg's Kate Clark to the show this week and diving into her reporting on the rough fundraising environment for any VC that isn't an a16z or GC-style megafund. If it weren't for the AI funding bonanza, the situation would look even worse. We each make our predictions for how rosy or dreary the venture market will be 2 years from now. Angela Robinson Whitehurst returns to the show to bring her Broadway experience to discussing Wicked and the translation from stage to screen. Dr. Gee and Angela discuss the timing of seeing race brought to the forefront of this version of Wicked, compared to when the stage musical was first a part of our culture. The power of fantasy and musical stories is that deep ideas about culture can be explored through an alternate version of our world. It allows us to see the realities of our world through a different lens. Angela also exposes the way that Black women were not allowed into the Alphoba role before the film version, but now that will be the standard as the significance of the character has been redefined by Blackness. They continue their conversation about Black voices and stories in Hollywood, including having to make representation happen for themselves. A native of Jacksonville, FL, Angela Robinson is best-known as The Ice Queen Veronica Harrington of Tyler Perry's The Haves and The Have Nots. For her work as Veronica she is the 2015 recipient of the Gracie Award (Best Female Actress – One to Watch). Angela has worked on Broadway, off Broadway and on stages throughout the US and abroad. Broadway productions include The Color Purple with Fantasia, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On! She has participated in National Tours of The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt. Her television/film credits include Law & Order: SVU, Another Bed and several regional and national commercials. She is the Winner of an Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award for her work as Shug Avery in The Color Purple, Angela has been nominated twice for a Black Theatre Alliance Award (The Color Purple, Dreamgirls), and for an Audelco Award (Radiant Baby). She is also a member of the Tony Award winning Broadway Inspirational Voices. In 2008 Angela and her husband Scott founded the WhiteRobin Group.
