Book Vs. Movie: Evil Under the SunThe Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1982 FilmAgatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun (1941) is a masterclass in misdirection and suspense. The 1982 film adaptation, directed by Guy Hamilton and featuring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, transforms the story into a glamorous whodunit set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean locale.  Both versions center around the murder of actress Arlena Stuart at a resort, with Poirot reluctantly drawn into the investigation, uncovering secrets among the guests, each with a motive. While the book is set on a secluded Devon island during World War II, featuring a more introspective tone, the film opts for colorful costumes and picturesque settings, filmed in Mallorca. Poirot in the book is sharp and formal, while Ustinov's portrayal is warmer and more humorous, appealing to some fans for its charm and theatricality.Between the original novel and the film — did we prefer one over the other? James Bond does not quite trade in his Aston Martin for a sled  and eight tiny reindeer, but he does show up at Christmas time with some presents for your stockings. Following a long tradition of unconventional Christmas Selection for the December MOTM, James Wilson of "Blogging By Cinema Light" suggested, and the community voted for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", the sixth 007 adventure. Matthew Simpson of the "Awesome Friday Podcast" joins the show to talk about the new Bond, George Lazenby, the best Bond girl Diana Rigg, and whether this really is a Christmas movie. We never need much encouragement here to talk about a Bond film, and the three people on the show have lots of opinions. James provided a game as well and our exit question concern the 007 franchise. In this episode, we spoke with author Herbie J. Deemed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1994, Diana Rigg (1938–2020) initially found fame as super sleuth Mrs. Emma Peel in the 1960s BBC/ABC-TV espionage series The Avengers.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This Christmas in July, we are joined by Adam Richard on a sleigh ride that flies right past the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lands on Margot Kidder's rooftop in 1978. Which is, it turns out, not a bad place to be. It's The Return of Doctor Mysterio. Notes and links Steven Moffat's clear inspiration here is Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1978), an astonishingly well-made and entertaining superhero movie starring Christopher Reeve as Clark and the wonderful Margot Kidder as Lois. If you haven't seen it, put your phone down at once and go and find a copy. In Episode 271: Eels with Jazz Hands, we mentioned the previous life of director Ed Bazalgette as a member of 1980s one-hit wonder The Vapors. The one hit in question was called Turning Japanese, and it was a massive thing at the time. The CW superhero shows Peter mentions are collectively called the Arrowverse, which started just a few years before this episode aired, and which included shows like Arrow (2012), The Flash (2014), Supergirl (2015) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016), featuring our very own Arthur Darvill. Ang Lee's unloved film Hulk (2003) liberally used comic book panels to transition between scenes (in a way far more sophisticated than what's attempted in this Doctor Who episode). This brief video will give you the idea. It was Adam's job to watch Series 10 of Doctor Who as a regular on the ABC's Doctor Who aftershow Whovians, which covered Series 10 to 12 and screened a day or so after each episode aired. Brendan mentions the Matt Fleischer animated Superman films from the 1940s, particularly the kinds of villains this version of Superman routinely fought. In the second film, The Mechanical Monsters (1941), Superman confronts a group of giant robots who rob banks and museums and inspire artists and filmmakers for generations. Go and watch it at once. Attractive Coal Hill Academy student Ram loses a leg in the first episode of the Doctor Who spin-off Class, which screened over eight weeks leading up to the start of December 2016. And then no one ever mentioned it or even thought about it ever again. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993) was an insanely popular television show in the 1990s, starring Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane and featuring the incredibly beautiful Dean Cain as Clark. (He's a horrid alt-right nutcase these days, which is a grim warning to all of us, I suppose.) Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, and Adam is @adamrichard. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. “Are you all comfortable? Now we know there are a ton of Hercule Poirot mysteries to choose from - from Albert Finney to Kenneth Branagh - all of them filled with the most glamorous leading ladies in Hollywood history. But there is something about this version, starring Peter Ustinov that is giving us high camp, high glamour, and we're loving every minute of it. Dames Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg are serving up their finest jewels, turbans and (maybe most importantly) their wittiest barbs as old frenemies with unfinished business. French ingénue Jane Birkin (of the famed Birkin Hermès bag) is not all she appears to be and Roddy McDowell is camping it up - as usual. Oh and if you're not yet familiar with hunky Nicholas Clay in those butt hugging swim briefs - you're welcome. May is here, and that means it's time for "Summer Sweeps," a five-episode look at failed cinematic adaptations of classic television series. First up, The Avengers. No, not those Avengers! We're talking about the 1998 attempted-blockbuster, starring Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman, and Sean Connery, based on the cult-classic British spy action-comedy series of the '60s. While the original show - which had a fascinating development history - was popular in both the UK and North America, and made stars out of both Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, the '98 movie was, well, less well-received. But what went wrong? Does the movie manage to capture the campy-charm of its source material? Can the entirety of a decade-spanning, ever-evolving series really be encapsulated in a 90-minute movie? And is there a potentially more successful longer-cut of the film, waiting to be seen? We discuss all this, and more!  Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

I know what you're thinking - WTF Happened to The Avengers? Nothing, it was one of the biggest hits ever. Not so fast - we're not talking about the Marvel superhero team-up that shot the MCU into the stratosphere. Instead, we're talking about 1998's misbegotten remake of the classic British spy series, The Avengers. On paper, this should have been a great movie. The Avengers was a classic British TV series starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as super spy agents John Steed and Emma Peel. Their “will they or won't they” chemistry influenced everything from Cheers to Moonlighting, and the show still runs daily in the UK. Given that the show was always considered the best Eurospy franchise outside of James Bond, it should have turned into a massive franchise for Warner Bros. The cast was next-level, with Uma Thurman playing Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes as John Steed, and James Bond himself, Sean Connery, as the main villain, Sir August de Wynter. So what went wrong? Just about everything, as we'll dig into in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie. For one thing, the finished version of the film clocked in at 89 minutes, about a half hour shorter than intended. Director Jeremiah Chechik found himself saddled with a finished film that didn't make a lick of sense. Given the issues with the cut, instead of being a summer blockbuster, it was dumped to the same late-summer dumping ground we find ourselves in right now (there's a reason nothing really opens until after Labor Day). So dig in and check out this tale of the spy franchise that wasn't. For more MOVIE NEWS, visit: http://www.joblo.com

In this episode, they also talk about nostalgia, dream sequences and Edgar Wright's filmography. Enjoy!

Turning an Agatha Christie story in a broad, comedic, European farce, sounds fatal on paper. But with its acidic, modernist Noel Coward script, a cast from heaven to deliver it (Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, Peter Ustinov, James Mason, Jane Birkin...) all sound-tracked by Cole Porter, as a film, it maybe the finest Christie adaption of all.

Behold – the late, great Edward Lionheart, a Shakespearean actor whose performances in Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, Othello, Cymbeline, and others left him the laughingstock of London theatre critics, is dead.  And yet somehow, someone is knocking off said critics one at a time in truly Shakespearean fashion… albeit with slight alterations to the text.  Shylock may have wanted his pound his flesh – this killer takes the heart.  Joan of Arc might have burned at the stake – this killer fries his victims in a hair salon.  Peregrine Devlin, head of the London Critics Circle, is baffled, as are the police.  And yet – the order of the killings bear a striking resemblance to Lionheart's last repertory season.  What's going on with the Thames-side meths drinkers that have taken up residence in the crumbling Burbage Theatre?  And what might Edward's daughter, Edwina, have to do with everything?  Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend us your ears – for herein lies the tale of the deceased actor who set out to exact revenge, and succeeded, and the rest – is silence. At the end of the hour, PAUL also introduces me to one far more successful show, the long-running daytime mystery drama known as THE EDGE OF NIGHT that qualifies as being in this 1970s selection simply because it ran from way, way before it in 1956 until deep into the 1980s. It's summer, the sun is blazing, and we only have one thing on our minds - the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the high-octane, expertly paced thriller The Fugitive, originally released August 6, 1993 starring Harrison Ford. Oh, and Medicare for All. We're always thinking about Medicare for All. Now that we mention it, isn't it funny how if we had a single-payer healthcare system, The Fugitive wouldn't exist? In a single-payer system, there would have been no nefarious pharmaceutical executive to frame Harrison Ford for murder in order to cover up the side effects of Provasic. There would have been no need for Walter White to cook meth in order to pay for his cancer treatment. In fact, a lot of our favorite movies and TV shows would be entirely without conflict. In this episode, we take a look at a uniquely American subgenre: movies where our healthcare system is the villain! Plus, we dip into the Healthcare-NOW mailbag to hear from our listeners about your favorite movies where for-profit healthcare is the bad guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKat9vjm7tI SPOILER ALERT. Some of these movies are masterpieces, and we'll be discussing spoilers. Seriously, we advise that you pause the podcast and watch Dog Day Afternoon now. Let's discuss the uniquely American film genre that depicts the healthcare industry as the villain. One of the biggest healthcare villain blockbusters was, of course, The Fugitive (1993). Our hero Dr. Richard Kimball is falsely accused of murdering his wife. He escapes police custody and along the way uncovers the truth, that he was framed by an evil pharmaceutical executive who killed Mrs. Kimball to cover up the side effects of a profitable new drug. Fun fact: Tommy Lee Jones was the former college roommate of Vice President Al Gore. The term “healthcare industry” dates back to the 1970s, and so does the reality of for-profit healthcare. Major transformations of our healthcare system have created real-life nightmares and impossible situations for patients, and that growing widespread experience of a healthcare dystopia then creates an audience for Hollywood script writers to build drama around healthcare situations. Two of the films submitted by our members come from the very beginning of the “healthcare industry,” in the early 1970s: The Hospital (1971) stars George C. Scott and Diana Rigg. A serial killer targets doctors by making them patients in their own hospital, where they die due to hospital negligence. CW: weird sexual politics. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) starring Al Pacino and John Cazale, dramatizes a true story of two Brooklyn bank robbers, motivated to steal to pay for gender reassignment surgery for Pacino's character's partner. In 2015, real life dad Bryan Randolph of Detroit robbed a bank to pay for his 1-year-old daughter's cancer treatment after his health insurance canceled her plan. The next explosion of healthcare plots comes in the 1990s and early 2000s, when “managed care” plans and HMOs spread like wildfire, replacing traditional insurance. Intended to bring down rising healthcare costs, managed care brought us such classics as prior authorization, widespread claim denials and limited networks. This kicked off a new wave of films in the 1990s that start using health insurance villains become key plot points. The failed Clinton health reform efforts also happened in 1994, which created probably a sense of hopelessness around Congress fixing these problems. As Good As It Gets (1997): This cringefest features Jack Nicholson as a cranky, bigoted and obsessive compulsive writer. Nicholson's character can only eat at one restaurant, where he meets waitress Helen Hunt, and pays for her child's cancer treatment so she can continue to work and serve him. All kinds of toxicity, sexism, and structural inequities on display in this one. Patch Adams (1998): features Robin Williams in a real life story about a doctor whose unorthodox ways bump up agai...

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week we're joined by Steven from New to Who to discuss one of the great loves of our lives — Dame Diana Rigg, whose astonishing performance makes The Crimson Horror one of the best episodes of the era. Notes and links So, Diana Rigg. As we all know, her breakout role was as Mrs Peel in The Avengers from 1966 to 1968. And so this is not her first appearance on Flight Through Entirety. Before discussing The Seeds of Doom, Brendan, Nathan and Richard discussed the Avengers episode that undoubtedly inspired it: The Man Eater of Surrey Green (see Episode 43: Sexiest Exposition Trope). Since then, on Bondfinger, we've discussed several more episodes of The Avengers that she starred in, as well as the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), which also starred the recently-cancelled George Lazenby as Bond. Richard's Pick of the Week: the “almost unwatchable” German Super 8 films starring Diana Rigg — Der goldene Schlüssel (1966), minikillers (1969) and Diadem (1969). They're all available on YouTube, but we would completely understand if you decided not to follow the links. Mark Gatiss named Mr Sweet after his friend Matthew Sweet, the author of Inventing the Victorians (2001), which attempts to demythologise the culture of the Victorian era: turns out, they were just as much fun as we are, apparently. Sweet is also known for his probing interviews of Doctor Who actors which can be found as extras on many DVD and Blu-ray releases. We occasionally mention or allude to The League of Gentlemen, a sketch comedy series set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey, which ran for three seasons, a movie and a return season 15 years later. It doesn't totally hold up now, for many reasons, but it's certainly a useful text when it comes to understanding Mark Gatiss's interests as a writer. Richard points out that the opening scene of the episode echoes the famous Hovis Bread commercial from 1973, directed by Ridley Scott, which the people at Hovis (credibly) claim is “Britain's most iconic and heart-warming advert”. More about the ad here. Mrs Gillyflower's revival meeting reminds Nathan of Mrs Melrose Ape, the lady preacher from Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, which we know that Mark Gatiss is aware of, because he plays a small role in Stephen Fry's film adaptation of the novel, Bright Young Things (2003). And finally, as a well-known Sherlockian, Gatiss ties this episode into the Holmes canon: in The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, Watson briefly refers to his notes on “the repulsive story of the red leech”. In this episode of Subgenre, host Josh Dasal and his first-time guest host, producer, advertising director, and Muppet afficionado Nick Heim, get felt up - [insert Statler and Waldorf laugh here] - as they release their nerdy perspectives on the 1981 high-fashion jewel heist in London romp, The Great Muppet Caper, directed by the puppet master himself, Jim Henson, and starring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Charles Grodin, Diana Rigg, and a cast of hundreds. Topics of discussion include Henson and company's desire to elevate the craft of puppetry in movies, how a contest produced the movie's title, and the repetitive hilarity of Murphy beds and busting lightbulbs.Guest host: Nick Heim, producer, advertising director Read more about The Great Muppet Caper (1981) at:IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082474/Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Muppet_CaperOur theme music: Still Room on the Night Train by Ketsa feat.
