So, who's ready to talk about The Darkness Around Our Hearts? What—you neither? In 3×13 “Anchors,” Stiles is having dreams about Lydia and nightmares about doors, only to wake up and find he can't exactly read. Scott's attempting to transform at random, his shadow giving away his superpower, eyes flashing red, and he's feeling completely out of control.(That is, except with the case of his best bud and roomie for life, Isaac—with whom he, uh—lets out a little Allison-related aggression.)Allison's being plagued with memories of her Aunt Kate, who tries at one point to crawl out of a morgue drawer. Her steady bowman's hands can't hold a paintbrush or, it turns out, a bow, resulting in a near death experience for Miss Lydia Martin. But yeah, they're fine. Totally fine. We're introduced to an adorkable new love interest who's just as smiley about death as she is about everything else, including her new history teacher of a father. The sheriff's got a murder board (like father, like son), Special Agent Asshole is back, and Scott and Stiles go back into the woods to try and find a dead body. What Are Your Emotional Anchors? The WISDOM podcast Season 5 Episode 78 Positive Emotional Anchors are a 'personalized strategy' and self-regulation tool. Think of it as a a grounding ritual, a cherished recollection of a past experience, a physical item or a sensory cue (e.g. a specific scent) that serves as a reliable touchstone to regulate emotions and restore balance during uncertainty. Emotional Anchors are a way to create stability and feel grounded and to return to a centered state when you feel disregulated. Emotional anchors are what link us between our present emotional state and a more preferred one. ~ Think about listening to uplifting music or your favourite song as a way to quickly uplevel your mood. Perhaps you use your breath as an anchor to return to the present moment and to feel calm. You might also use a cue word or mantra that ignites the feeling that you want to experience. In this episode, I talk about the science of why emotional anchors work for us, how we can cultivate specific anchors for different experiences and states of being ~ and of course I share several examples. This week's episode is all about spiritual deconstruction, what it is, why it happens, and what comes after. I'm joined by Brittney Hartley, an atheist spiritual director with a Master's in Theology who has created a captivated following with her content. I love how Brittany talks about this topic with honesty, clarity, and depth. I wanted to bring this topic to the podcast because so much of what I teach is about deconstructing beliefs that no longer work for us and figuring out what does actually work for you. Religion is often one of those things. From both my personal experience and what I know so many of you have gone through, I think you're going to love this conversation with Brittney. Here's what really hit me in our conversation: spiritual deconstruction isn't just about walking away from religion. It's about rebuilding a sense of meaning that actually aligns with who you are, not who you were told to be. Brittney shares what helped her through the unlearning process, how religious trauma shows up in sneaky ways (especially for women), and why reclaiming your intuition and identity is deeply spiritual work. What you'll hear about in this episode: Brittney's spiritual deconstruction story from Mormonism to theology school to becoming an Atheist Spiritual Director (5:40) Personality traits more likely to lead to deconstruction (spoiler: empathy, curiosity, and authenticity play a big role) (13:27) The sneakier signs of spiritual trauma for women raised in patriarchal religions (15:33) Anchors and practices that helped Brittney rebuild her identity, including discovering core values (20:34) The biggest culprit of religious trauma for women (28:35) Resources from this episode: Interested in doing deeper work within a group setting and with me? Hi Neighbor, Today marks not only our 200th episode, but also the third anniversary of this podcast. What started as a simple idea and a backyard walk has now grown into a global community of adoptive parents seeking encouragement, connection, and biblical hope. In this milestone episode, I'll take you back to where it all began. I'm recording from my outdoor “studio,” the same backyard path where I first began sharing adoption content three years ago. I reflect on the origin of the podcast, the evolution of its name, and the heart behind every episode: letting adoptive parents know they're not alone in the hard work of parenting. You'll also get a sneak peek at what's ahead for the podcast and community. Coming attractions include:

There are so many ways to know a place – maybe you know the best place to grab lunch, the best place to stargaze, or the best way to beat traffic on a Friday afternoon. You might have a deep understanding of its geology or history, or you might know the families who've lived there for decades. But there are other ways of knowing a place that might not always get our full attention. Like the smell of the earth, or a sidewalk after it rains. We explore some of the invisible, intangible qualities than not only define places in Maine, but in some cases shape who we are in them.

As the school year gains momentum, it's easy for school leaders to fall into survival mode—abandoning the very rhythms that anchor sustainable growth, effective school operations, and confident leadership. In this episode of the Schools of Excellence Podcast, Chanie Wilschanski breaks down the essential distinction between anchors and enhancers, and why understanding this difference is critical for school directors managing high-pressure seasons. If you're facing a surge in enrollment, onboarding new staff, or navigating leadership fatigue, this episode will help you identify the systems, habits, and non-negotiables that protect your energy and peace of mind. Because running a private school, preschool, or early childhood center shouldn't mean always putting out fires—it means leading with intentionality, clarity, and control. What You'll LearnThe difference between anchors and enhancers—and why both matter for sustainable school leadershipHow to identify the leadership habits that protect you from burnout, second-guessing, and resentmentThe hidden cost of abandoning your routines during busy seasonsWhy survival mode becomes the default when systems are missingA simple way to assess where your school needs operational focusKey Insights1. Anchors create stability during chaos Anchors are the daily habits that ground you emotionally and mentally. For overwhelmed directors, these aren't luxuries—they're leadership tools. Anchors may look like prayer, walking, journaling, or quiet reflection. When the pressure is high, these are the habits that keep you rooted and resilient.2. Enhancers elevate—but they don't stabilize Massages, time with friends, or a night out can be wonderful enhancers, but they can't replace the foundational habits that regulate your mindset and sustain your ability to lead. Enhancers help you feel good, but they don't create consistency.3. Abandoning anchors leads to burnout When school leaders drop their anchors in exchange for hustle, the cost is high. Leadership becomes reactive. Decision fatigue sets in. You feel stuck, anxious, and resentful. Rebuilding your rhythms later will require far more energy than simply preserving them now.4. Your anchors are unique to you Chanie shares her personal anchors—prayer, walking, and meditation—and encourages leaders to identify their own. The true test? If you still do it when you're sick, traveling, or exhausted, it's likely an anchor.5. Systems—not hustle—drive confident leadership Real school leadership isn't about working harder. It's about installing rhythms and school systems that do the heavy lifting. When you lead from systems, not from stress, you create time freedom, better team accountability, and long-term sustainability.Memorable Quotes"When you stop doing your anchors, survival becomes a habit—and it's harder to come back from." – Chanie Wilschanski "Anchors aren't nice-to-haves. They're lifelines." "Leadership is about alignment, not exhaustion."Try This: 3 Steps to Identify Your AnchorsStep 1: Look at your stress habits What do you continue doing when you're sick, overextended, or traveling? That's likely an anchor.Step 2: List your daily wellness practices Then separate anchors from enhancers. Anchors are essential and stabilizing. Enhancers are supportive, but optional.Step 3: Choose one anchor to protect this season Commit to it fully. That single action can create the clarity and consistency you need to lead well this fall. Why It Matters for School LeadersReduces burnout, resentment, and emotional exhaustion in high-pressure seasonsHelps you
Have you ever felt completely alone—like you were the only one facing something so hard it seemed no one else could understand? What do you do in those moments? Who do you turn to? If you're an adoptive parent feeling that way right now, may I gently suggest this: it's time to grab hold of an anchor. Hi Neighbor, I'm imagining an adoptive parent listening to this episode, feeling isolated and overwhelmed. I know that feeling well because my wife and I have been there, too. There were times we were convinced no one else could possibly understand what we were walking through. The adoption journey can be incredibly hard. But it doesn't have to be lonely. If you're feeling alone, please hear this, you're not. In this episode, let's talk about how to find your anchor when the waves hit hard. Anchors of hope and healing are on the way. Your Neighbor, Tim P.S. You're not alone in this journey! I'm putting together something designed to offer real, practical help and emotional support for fellow adoptive parents like you. We explore the key differences between what motivates us personally versus what motivates others, and how vulnerability plays a role in leadership. Just after taking the stage, Leonard discusses how understanding the motivations of individuals on our team—and then learning when to step aside—can empower them to thrive and achieve meaningful success.

“By the time he left, I felt like I was close to a mental breakdown. And I would tell my husband over and over, I can't do this long, much longer. I just can't. You know, I would go sit in the Walmart parking lot for three hours until he went to bed. And so I was avoiding my whole family. That affected my husband because here my husband is supposed to be my protector, but legally he can't protect me against this thirteen-year-old who's constantly verbally abusing me.” Hi Neighbor, Navigating the complexities of parenting a child with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is a journey few understand, yet many adoptive parents endure in silence. In this episode, I sit down with Karen, an adoptive mother of six and a survivor of the extraordinary challenges RAD can bring to a family. Her vulnerability is a reminder that while this path is isolating, hope and healing are possible. RAD is a daily battle that can reshape a family. Could it be that the very struggles you've walked through have prepared you to encourage someone else? Hi Neighbor! Why do bad things happen in life? Some might say, “That's just life.” But I believe there's a deeper meaning behind that question, something worth pausing to reflect on. In this episode, let's reframe that narrative together. I'll share a moment from David's life in Psalm 13, a powerful example from Paul in 2 Corinthians 1 and 7, and a bold conversation with a queen in Esther 4. But I think even adults, even adults who haven't been through trauma can tell you that it's sometimes difficult to talk about our feelings. I think that is the beauty of music therapy. Because clients can come. They don't necessarily need to say exactly what they want to explore. We can just explore in music. Hi Neighbor, Did you know that music can be a powerful tool for healing in the lives of adopted children navigating trauma? Today, I'm excited to welcome back my neighbor from London, Crystal Luk-Worrall. Crystal is a music therapist, EMDR practitioner, and clinical supervisor who specializes in helping children and families heal from early trauma. In Episode 180, Crystal introduced us to EMDR therapy—a powerful approach for adoptive parents supporting kids through trauma. In this episode, she shares her personal journey—from aspiring concert pianist to discovering her true calling as a music therapist. Crystal explains how music opens up new pathways for communication and healing. Music allows kids to express what words often can't. In therapy, it becomes a bridge—not just between sounds, but to feelings that may be too big or complex to name. As parents, we can help our children explore their emotions rather than suppress them. Grab a pen and paper—Crystal has some simple, practical ways you can start incorporating music therapy at home. Anchors of Hope and Healing are on the way. Your Neighbor, Tim P.S. You're not alone in this journey. If you haven't joined our private community, consider this an invitation. It's a safe space to share your struggles and triumphs with fellow adoptive parents who truly understand what you're going through. Listen to today's episode and share it with fellow adoptive parents. These conversations foster strength and understanding in our community. Be the anchor others may need right now.
