This week we talked to Portland nightmare pop band, Miss Honey. We get into seriously serious topics like performance attire, dark undertones, fighting, butterfly knives, ghosts, big mustard, sweeping, and so much more. Crushing music this week from Miss Honey, Dummy, and Beastii
This week, Features contributor Alyssa Edes speaks with Jen Dot of the newly reunited and Chicago-based beastii. They discuss their newest LP, Follower, Jen's book Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983 that covers the women who started Punk music, and her unlikely sources of inspiration for songwriting, like lyrics she wrote as a seven year old. "This is actually the first album I've conceptualized since I wrote the book, and since I was immersed in those artists' work. I'm being my authentic self, but I'm also carrying a torch." - Jen Dot of beastii Produced by Alyssa Edes. Photo Credit: Chris Nightengale

***DISCLAIMER: This episode was recorded in August, so there is some outdated dialogue about the Delta variant, which might as well be eons ago now that we are dealing with omicron. Larson. They discuss Jen's upcoming book HIT GIRLS: Women of USA Punk 1975-1983, the major differences between punk scenes in the Midwest and the coasts, share their favorite punk bands they obsessed over growing up, and their shared obsession with Lydia Lunch. ✨ MORE ABOUT JEN B. This week, Features & Production Director Jessi D speaks with Jen Dot of Jen & the Dots. They discuss Jen's prolific Chicago music career in beastii and Swimsuit Addition, her hesitancy to name this new project after herself, her Sci-Fi news writing project set on an alternative Earth, juggling attending grad school and writing a book, staving off the ever present existential crisis with a busy schedule, and Jen & the Dots' first (and possibly only) EP. Jen B. Larson plays in the band beastii and contributes music writing to Victim of Time, 50Thirdand3rd, Please Kill Me, and more. She also draws comics and authors fiction for Pulp Oddyssey, Earth's first newspaper from outer space. During the day, she teaches special education at an arts high school in Chicago, and at night and on the weekends, spends whatever free time she has researching for and drafting her first book. You can find links to most of her work at http://www.disappearingmedia.com The First Time is CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series. It pairs a reader’s personal story about a specific "first time" -- a different "first" for each show -- with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by The First Time Four. The band takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements, so it is hard to tell which the audience enjoys more: the story or the song. The First Time is produced and directed by Julie Mueller with Assistant Producers Bobby Evers, Hadas Werman and Host Jenn Sodini. Podcast recorded and produced by Jenn Rourke. Engineering by Tony Baker.
Do you have 99 projects and a bitch aint one? This girl does! The all-powerful songwriter/guitarist/reincarnated cat Jen Dot (aka Jennifer Larson aka Imma Dot aka Mystery Teacher of the Year) won my heart when, after our show together in Chicago last April, she gifted me a stack of her various band's many cassettes and a homemade zine. As Jen reminded me, it’s TOTALLY OK to have 99 projects! It’s true: Jen hasn't met a punk project she didn't want to tackle. In fact, she has so many exciting ideas (including a really cool book on 70s punk female musicians that I personally cannot wait to devour), she can actually procrastinate on one project merely by switching over to another project! I know a lot of artists who deal with these same kind of struggles (not bad struggles to have), so I hope our conversation helps to inspire you to finish that thing you’ve been putting off or maybe even start a new thing, if you’re so inclined. Jen also talks about what really drives her: the desire to DO while she CAN and to BE HERE NOW. It’s easier said than done, don’t you think? Jen is, of course, the reluctant leader of a few really good rad Chicago area bands, including Beastii, Das Dotz (formerly known as Jen and the Dots), and Swimsuit Addition. You’ll hear from the first two on this episode, so listen till the end! We sit down with Jennifer Larson of Disappearing Media, Pulp Oddyssey, and the band Beastii to talk about what keeps artists in Chicago, “making it,” knowing when something is ready… The post Scapi Radio 09.06.18 Disappearing Media, Beastii, Jennifer Larson appeared first on Scapi Magazine.
In Episode 33 Jen Larson of the bands Swimsuit Addition and Beastii, creator of the card game Douchebag CEO, and Chicago Public School teacher joined me to talk about Pet Sematary 1 and 2.... well more so part 1. We discussed toxic relationships, the characters inability to face honest conflict resolution, and the eternal hell Pascow must face having to wear jogging shorts for all eternity.
