The Buddha taught a path of awakened living, but how does that manifest in today's world of constant connectivity and widespread suffering? How do we keep our hearts open without being defined or hardened by the pain that surrounds us, whether personal, collective, or historical? How do we navigate the paradox of holding both pain and joy, without mistaking suffering for punishment or personal failure? Can we infuse our compassion with wisdom and perspective to find the agency to take meaningful action in our communities? In her new series, Engaged Compassion, Sharon delves into these questions and more, engaging in candid conversations with a diverse group of teachers, activists, and changemakers. For the inaugural episode, Sharon's speaks with longtime friend and colleague, Jerry Colonna—a renowned coach, writer, and speaker who specializes in leadership, business, and the practice of radical self-inquiry. Jerry is the Co-founder and CEO of Reboot.io, a company inspired by the belief that work need not destroy us. He is also the author of two books: "Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up" (2019) and "Reunion: Leadership and the Longing to Belong" (2023). For more than two decades, Jerry has championed the idea that work should be non-violent to the self, the community, and the planet. He is a filmmaker and director, most recently coming out with Brilliant Disguise. Brilliant Disguise tells the unique story of a group of inspired Western spiritual seekers from the 60s, who in meeting the great American teacher, Ram Dass, followed him to India to meet his Guru, Neem Karoli Baba, familiarly known as Maharaj-ji. Two days before he left his body, Maharaj-ji instructed K.C. Tewari to take care of the Westerners, which he did resolutely until the day he died in 1997. Silver's #1 charting MGM/UA/Warners film, “The Compleat Beatles” is the critically acclaimed biopic movie about history's most famous band. The term ‘rockumentary' was first applied to this two-hour movie. Rolling Stone recently described the film as a “masterwork.” Silver's Warner Brothers' feature film, “No Nukes” also started the whole trend of music/activism feature documentaries.“‘Be Here Now' is not only Ram Dass's precept of just be in the present, it's saying, ‘Be here now, and you're everywhere. Be here now, and you're in wisdom.' If you're not here now, you're veering away from wisdom.” — David SilverSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode #480: Michael Santi Keezing, a former Thai Forest monk, describes himself as both a Buddhist and a “post-Buddhist,” shaped by a lifelong effort to understand the mind, culture, and the limits of spiritual practice for someone raised in an intensely individualistic Western society. He recalls that before he ever meditated, he felt a persistent longing to understand consciousness, a “free-floating yearning” that led him into Eastern spirituality through books like Be Here Now, Siddhartha, and the works of Carlos Castaneda. Discovering a nearby monastery in the Ajahn Chah lineage, he eventually ordained, believing he was pursuing clear insight through what he calls Buddhist phenomenology. Only later did he recognize that trauma and a desire for safety also influenced his decision, as the monastery offered structure, belonging, and a refuge from uncertainty. Inside monastic life he set aside the intellectual world that once defined him, devoting himself to meditation and the Vinaya. Meditation gave him emotional clarity, while the discipline cultivated humility and restraint. Yet he also saw rigidity within Western monastic communities—an absolutism around hierarchy and rules that sometimes obscured compassion. A turning point came when he lived among Indonesian and Thai monks in Queens, where identical rituals felt more human and flexible, revealing that Western monastics inadvertently reshaped the tradition through their WEIRD conditioning. That conditioning, he says, produces inward-focused individuals burdened by psychic wounds, often misreading Buddhism through a modern psychological lens. Returning to the act of reading late in his monastic years, he encountered books on neuroscience, which reframed experiences he once interpreted through Buddhist metaphysics. Realizing that no single framework held all answers, he eventually moved beyond monasticism. Michael now emphasizes a practical understanding of not-self, rejects political quietism, and argues that wisdom must express itself as action and responsibility. Reflecting on Burma's struggle, he affirms that “justice can be achieved for the Burmese people,” holding hope while remainingcommitted to engagement.

Be Here Now - Mike CohnOne of my favorite books is one I've never completely read. It's called Be Here Now. A friend's older brother was reading it when I was 10. He let me page through his copy. The book caught my attention because it was square, an unusual shape for a book. Many of the pages inside the book were hand-lettered and illustrated.I next came across the book when I was a college freshman. I read part of it then but never finished it because it's a guide to Hinduism for Westerners, which isn't my thing. But the title of that book has always resonated with me: Be Here Now.I think the ability to be here now is something too many of us are losing. We can't just be in the moment and in the place. Everyone has to be constantly on their mobile phones. We multitask between what we should be working on and whatever else catches our eye, meanwhile listening for the assorted dings demanding attention.(I admit to having paused once even while writing this to investigate the boing of a new email arriving. But I've so far withheld the temptation to look a second time.)I witness the inability to be here now while training or working with teams. Once, during an in-person class, I was unable to make eye contact with any participant. Each was banging away on a laptop. When they asked questions, they were like, “When does the sprint master help with the project backlog?”Am I any better, though? I love music and grew up listening to the three-minute rock songs of the era. I remember listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a teen. It was OK (don't judge me!) but I thought, “Who has time for a one-hour song?”Now I hit skip halfway through my favorites on Spotify.I worry about attention spans and the ability to focus. The inability to be here now must have an impact on innovation, productivity, and teamwork. I don't have a solution.I don't have ”three quick tips to be here now.” I merely want to request that we each try to be here now a bit more often, a bit longer, and a bit more intensely each day,How to connect with AgileDad:- [website] https://www.agiledad.com/- [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/- [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/- [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

We're excited to bring back our esteemed panel of music experts, Joe Kay from the Play that Rock n' Roll podcast (www.youtube.com/@PlayThatPodcast) and singer/songwriter, Scott Cvecko from The Weary World (thewearyworld.com/) for another Bait and Switch Music Review! This week, Chris made the pick, and he chose Oasis's 1997 album, Be Here Now. The reason? After seeing the look on Joe's face when he mentioned it, Chris felt like it was his duty to force him to listen to it! Our panel jumps into the album's most famous criticisms: the excessive song lengths and that "cranked-up, extra loud" mix. We also discuss the global obsession with Oasis compared to their more moderate success in the US, the endlessly feuding Gallagher brothers and of course we find out the answer to the biggest question of all - what did JOE think?? All that and much, much more! Enjoy!

By exploring the 'what-if mind,' we unpack how these relentless thoughts can spiral into overwhelming anxiety. The discussion centers on recognizing where our concerns originate, often rooted in our instinct to protect ourselves. While our minds are hardwired to anticipate dangers and potential problems, this survival mechanism can easily turn into an exhausting cycle of worry. The show emphasizes that these what-ifs can feel convincing and powerful, often painting scenarios that never materialize while neglecting positive outcomes. This pattern leads to a narrowed perspective, amplifying fear beyond reality. I stress the importance of not fighting or suppressing these thoughts but rather acknowledging their presence and gently guiding the mind back to the present—where our true power lies.Throughout the episode, I share strategies to help listeners identify and manage their what-if thoughts. The key is early recognition—skills that can be cultivated over time. I discuss the significance of labeling anxious thoughts as they arise, reframing them to acknowledge that they are simply future predictions and not current facts. This technique enables listeners to replace anxiety with grounding affirmations and return to their breath, thereby reclaiming their calm.#AnxietyRelief, #FutureAnxiety, #Overthinking, #WorryLess, #CalmYourMind, #WhatIfs, #AnxietySupport, #StressRelief, #AnxietyAwareness, #AnxietyTips, #EmotionalWellness, #QuietMind, #Mindfulness, #PresentMoment, #ReturnToNow, #BeHereNow, #BePresent, #MindfulLiving, #InTheMoment, #MindfulnessPractice, #CalmMind, #PeaceOfMind, #GuidedMeditation, #MeditationPractice, #BreathingExercises, #Breathwork, #Grounding, #Mantra, #Affirmations, #DailyMeditation, #MeditationJourney, #MindfulBreathing, #MentalHealth, #MentalHealthMatters, #SelfCare, #SelfLove, #PersonalGrowth, #InnerPeace, #Wellness, #Wellbeing, #Healing, #EndTheStigma, #AnxietyCoachesPodcast, #GinaRyan, #AnxietyCoach, #LifeCoach, #WellnessPodcast, #Coaching, #PodcastLife. #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Challenging Core Tenants Of Human Belief & Consciousness w/ Spiritual Teacher Ram Dass & Parvati Markus

As humans, we are governed by our core beliefs, many of which we aren't even aware of. There are so many things we believe to be true and so many foundational concepts of our perception we never question. So in this episode, we're going to question them. Ram Dass was an American Spiritual teacher, psychologist, and writer. He gained popularity in the early 1960s by bringing concepts of consciousness and spirituality from India, to America.  His book, "Be Here Now" is a spiritual classic selling over two million copies. He began as a professor at Harvard before being fired along with Timothy Leary for experimenting and advocating the use of psychedelics. Now, as a proper Christian, I was fairly unaware of Ram Dass. That is until the winter of 2024 when my Dad, Dan Miller of 48 Days To The Work & Life You Love fame, was diagnosed with cancer. During the six weeks between his diagnosis and ultimate death, he had little interest in any topic other than spirituality. And one of the people he tuned into was Ram Dass. My brother Jared and my Dad would pull up YouTube videos of Ram Dass and I got my first real exposure. My spiritual journey since then has been nothing short of revelatory. And such was my delight when the giant publisher, Harper, contacted me about doing a show on a new book from Ram Dass. What it ended up being was a new book compiled from over 50 talks Ram Dass conducted, compiled and edited by Parvati Markus, who was at the right hand of Ram Dass since the beginning of his spiritual leadership. Parvati is an author of multiple books on spirituality and one of the closest long term friends to Ram Dass that ever existed. In this episode Parvati joins me to talk through key issues Ram discusses such as our human propensity, especially in western cultures, to think in terms of “us” vs “them.” We discuss Judgement vs appreciation. Then attachments and the danger of what we cling to. And we spend a lot of time talking about the dangers of identifying with our roles, which for much of humanity, again, I think exaggerated in our western culture, is all that we know to identify with. The new book, which I've read front to back twice now, is There Is No Other: The Way to Harmony and Wholeness. Connect more at ramdass.org. She shares that she does a monthly creative project in her mini, free Shakespeare Sherpa Club (link below). As part of my monthly Shakespeare Sherpa project, I turn toward poetry and performance as a quiet ritual of peace. Today, that takes the form of two voices in deep lament: Constance, from King John by William Shakespeare (Act 3, Scene 4), a mother devastated by the imprisonment of her son. Edna St. Vincent Millay, in her haunting poem Dirge Without Music, refusing to soften the sorrow of death. In this episode, I also briefly reflect on a teaching from Ram Dass (Ep. 283 of Be Here Now) and the difference between righteous helping and liberative helping. Can we mourn and still be spiritually free? Can we serve peace while holding the full weight of what we feel? Awkward Alert: I read Shakespeare not because I am a Shakespearean actor, or ever plan to be, but because this is my podcast and I can. As such, I remind listeners of the fast forward button. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 730 Could your DNA hold a hidden superpower that's just waiting to be activated by light? Brian Richards, Founder of SaunaSpace, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 730, to uncover how near-infrared saunas can help cleanse toxins, support brain function, and even raise your vibrational frequency, and why embracing your innate power to heal is the ultimate path to true freedom. "One of the effects of photobiomodulation is to correct gene transcription = how the DNA is read. The DNA and the epigenetics are being fixed in a much more powerful way with the near-infrared light than they're being damaged by the ultraviolet component of the sunlight. But indoors, we only use damaging light. There's none of the healing light anymore. So to bring ourselves back into balance, we need to get a lot more near-infrared light. And the incandescent bulb uniquely presents itself as a way to do that." - Brian Richards 10% Off SaunaSpace ThermaLight® technology combines the finest tungsten filaments, mouth-blown red-stained glass, and years of engineering to produce a full-spectrum infrared light that mimics the best of nature. Benefits: Compact and portable, hypoallergenic, tool-free assembly, wheelchair accessible, machine-washable cover, minimalist design, ZERO EMFs. All saunas have the same goal: to raise your core body temperature enough to jump-start its natural healing processes. Traditional saunas use steam, fire, or electric heaters to make the air in the sauna hot, which eventually heats up your body from the outside in. Infrared saunas tap into the science of light to help you sweat faster and more comfortably. In 2013, he founded SaunaSpace®, a company that combines cutting-edge incandescent infrared technology with the age-old practice of sauna. In 2008, Brian faced an important health decision: start taking pharmaceuticals for insomnia, adrenal fatigue, and other health issues or try full-spectrum sauna therapy coupled with ancestral practices like a clean diet, proper sleep, and yoga. By opting for the natural approach, Brian rapidly transformed his health. This life-changing experience inspired him to create SaunaSpace®. In his journey to develop the perfect product, Brian has immersed himself in the science and research behind light, heat, electromagnetism, and the human body. 14 years later, he brings a refreshing approach to natural living, biohacking, and natural health transformation.
