Episode Notes Can otters help the ladies get through the first few months of 2022? On this episode, the gals rejoice in the goodness that is Field Roast's vegan "Celebration Loaf" while recounting the highs and lows of 2021. Not surprisingly, Hayley and Danielle spin a yarn encompassing some Extremely Random Things, including the best children's books, podcasts, memes, animals (shoutout to da Orcas), smoked meats and personal experiences that lifted us up during the extended slow-motion apocalypse. I mean, 2022 is an even number, so this year might turn out OK, right? First thing's first, we're talking to recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and bassist/writer Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go's! You might not know that The Go-Go's were the first female band to play all their own instruments and write their own songs to have an album go to number 1 on the Billboard Charts! Well, now you know! Their recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame win got us thinking about our own firsts, as cringe-worthy as many of them are. Discover our first pets (hint: very low on the food chain), first albums (our hearts will go on), first jobs (dear god) and first kisses (GROSS)! Seriously, why do dudes under 30 always smell like Funyuns? Plus, Danielle reveals her freaky pirate obsession, Hayley uncovers the nasty truth behind Burger King's so-called "flame broiled" lies, and we go deep into the zen of deer/squirrel spotting! PLUS, our dedicated mixologist Shane Bagnall mixes us not one but TWO drinks! (He had to do one with alcohol and one without, as today's guest is a sober rocker). Like we've said before, Shane is not a half asser. He is a WHOLE asser. And that's not all folks...there's way more weirdness to come! Now is the time for you to kick back, relax and allow us to be the FIRST podcast to introduce you to the concept of "soul cankles." Ugh...Sorry about that. Cool stuff mentioned in this episode: Kathy Valentine's memoir, "All I Ever Wanted: A Rock and Roll Memoir" www.amazon.com/All-Ever-Wanted-R…1638427733&sr=1-1 The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick - www.indiebound.org/book/9781335937803 Author Mallory O'Meara - www.malloryomeara.com/ Her talk at The Kansas City Public Library www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_RIHSXgS8w Her podcast, Reading Glasses - maximumfun.org/podcasts/reading-glasses/ Her new book is Girly Drinks: A World History of Women and Alcohol - www.indiebound.org/book/9781335282408 (you don't have to mention or link all of that if it's too much) You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey Crazy Stories about Racism - by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar - www.indiebound.org/book/9781538719367 Amber Ruffin is the host of The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock - www.peacocktv.com/stream-tv/the-amber-ruffin-show www.youtube.com/channel/UCxej9nPf6TqFyfsiez1_P3w Amber is also a writer and cast member on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. We're back, baby! Reporting from the Madonna Inn's fabulous Mill Room, Hayley Crusher Cain and new Co-host Danielle Mercrusher Bagnall are resurrecting the podcast with a dash of mischief and a very strong cocktail! Johnny Ramone, Eddie Vedder and Weird Al walk into a green room….OK, better to let legendary singer Kim Warnick tell this joke herself! The Fastbacks' bassist/vocalist is full of hilarious stories, zingy one-liners and a down-to-earth humility that only comes from flying so close to sun and actually living to tell the tale (in an alternate universe run by record store geeks, perhaps The Fastbacks could have been the next Nirvana). It's a funny story, really: the pioneering Seattle band were always too eccentric, too weird and (as Kim says) maybe that's a good thing! The group of high school buddies (including Lulu Gargiulo: guitar/vocals and genius guitarist/ band leader Kurt Bloch) not only influenced would-be-punks to pick up a guitar, they also got to live out their own teenage fantasies opening up for the likes of the Ramones and Joan Jett. Touring the world (and finally making it to Japan just like her heroes, The Runaways), Kim has tasted every high school garage band's wet dream. Today, we bring it all back to 1979, when Kim was just a kid dreaming about attacking the bass on stage just like Dee Dee. So...what happens when you invite mom and dad into the pogo pit? Did Dr. Frank really ask for an entire series of Encyclopedia Brittanica in his rider? What's all this about Joan Jett's pubes? How the hell did Kurt keep it all together for so many years? All these questions and more are answered (well, sort of) on this here podcast. What a way to rocket into 2021! Support Kim Warnick by picking up her music! 1-2-3-4- JUST GOOGLE IT! In songwriter Dustin Umberger’s world, everything starts (and ends) with a laptop. If you’ve heard the bedroom pop punker’s prolific musical output, you know he’s quick to record and lightning fast to publish. His songs (of which there are no less than 80 billion) are funny, sad, biting, relatable, sarcastic—but always compact and delivered straight from the gut. It’s like there is no barrier between Deeds’ initial song idea and the tune you’re hearing right now (an addictive quality, like reading someone’s innermost Tweets). That isn’t to say the songs aren’t well-crafted; they’re just immediate. Deeds also records all his own music, from bass and guitar to (lately) drums, just to show off. Yes, those are Garage Band amps, and he’s proud to say so! Today, we chat about the utility of recording vocals in your car, dropping the “grim” prefix, thriving during covid (he’s doing the sit ups, not me) and Deeds’ new label, Laptop Punk Records. The label has already put out some killer singles by Kim Warnick, Rocky Rochelle, and Brad Marino, plus underground pop punk bands like Umberger’s newest band, Deeds, and groups from as far away as Japan and Indonesia (you gotta checkout Saturday Night Karaoke). Finally! A rundown on my long-awaited and infamous ride with 80s billboard queen Angelyne. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll barf. Today I read from my short story “Pink Your Guts Out: Thrills and Nausea in LA!” This story is sourced from my new zine, included with all vinyl orders of “Jacaranda” by Hayley and the Crushers. This episode features Hayley and the Crushers song “Angelyne” off the EP “Jacaranda” by Hayley and the Crushers, out now at www.hayleyandthecrushers.com and from Surfin Ki and Reta Records. Blog post for this episode: You’ll also hear “Cause I’m a Blond” by Julie Brown and “Kiss Me LA” by Baby Blue, Angelyne’s own punk band. Thank you to Angelyne for this amazing experience. What year is it? What day is it? WTF is 2020? The theme of this year is that we all need to be willing to be wrong, and make mistakes...to make the world better. Whatever we can do, let's try. America's broken promise to immigrants, trading aggression for compassion, and whether or not it's OK to eat eggs in the tour van...Yes, it's all on the table, baby! That's because I'm chatting with outspoken bassist/vocalist Linh Le of the So Cal band Bad Cop/Bad Cop! The band's new full length album The Ride (out June 19 on Fat Wreck Chords)trades an angry roar for a more sweet and sour mix of emotions, even delving into the territory of self-love (don't worry, they can still do it with a guttural snarl when they want to). Today we talk a bit about Lin’s gut-punch of a tune “Pursuit of Liberty,” the band’s second single. The song provides a searing look into the first-generation Vietnamese-American immigrant's fierce convictions. You'll also hear "Simple Girl," the first single from the new album. Don’t call it a come back, she’s been here all along! 80s princess Josie Cotton is so much more than what we remember from the 80s flick Valley Girl. So a Gen Xer and a Vintage Millennial walk into a podcast....What could go wrong? Today, enjoy a thoughtful conversation with BFF (Best Bearded Fan) of podcast Neal Breton! Breton is a painter, baked goods enthusiast, reluctant cool dad and general troublemaker. He's also a valued Crusherverse collaborator! I have said it many times, but I will say it again. I want to live inside one of Neal's colorful pool paintings. Hunkered down and hopped up on caffeine, we dissect each song on Hayley and the Crushers’ new album Vintage Millennial (with NO STONE left unturned!!!!!). Yes, it's very TMI. Sounds more tedious than it is. Promise! This episode features songs from Hayley and the Crushers album Vintage Millennial. Did we create a Frankenstein-esque monster when we created the 21st Century man and is he interesting enough to give him his own Netflix series? What are the BEST song-rhyming practices (according to Mr. T Experience’s Dr. Frank)? Why are millennials so obsessed with outdated musical formats? How can we continually strive to express the inexpressible through art—-and why should we keep up that fight (even as the world so dramatically crumbles around us)? What was it like to work with 80s New Wave icon Josie Cotton? Pretty good answers to all of these riveting queries are explored on today’s Sparkle and Destroy podcast, where I find myself quarantined with Ben Weasel as we chat about his rad new album, Some Freaks of Atavism! YES, pioneering Chicago pop punk Screeching Weasel can totally brag about being the first non-West Coast Band to join the ranks of the legendary LOOKOUT! Records clubhouse. Now, Ben Weasel can attempt another first: FIRST DUDE interviewee to plant his tattered flag on Sparkle and Destroy’s glittery moonscape (well, besides a few cameos by Dr. Cain). Yes, it’s one small step for this 21st Century man; one giant leap for formerly closeted pop punk feminists everywhere. The COVID 19 Apcolypse is upon us, but we’re still allowed to giggle, right? NOTE: This episode was recorded way before things went totally sideways. Our hearts go out to everyone dealing with this horrific pandemic and we hope this episode brightens your day a bit. Played on this episode: Pale Lips tunes “Some Sort of Rock n Roll,” “You’re a Doll,” “The Kids” and “Doo-Wop Showaddywaddy” from their incredible Pale Lips album AFTER DARK (which you should go check out right this second. I bumped into today's guest Madelyn “Lucy Mad” Ropner,” vocalist of the late 70s San Luis Obispo, CA punk band Publik Enema, at an X show in Morro Bay California in July 2019. She was holding a flier that was some 40 years old. Being a fellow punkette in a one horse town, I had to hear the story behind the flier—especially about how her band had helped bring LA bands like X to the region way back when. Luckily for us, Lucy Mad was down to come over with a stack of zines, and a lot of crazy stories to tell! We had a grand time and she spun some long yarns about punk rock, drugs, leopard print, small town shows, and DIY. Whether or not you grew up in a small town or not, I think you will totally enjoy this episode, which also features the Rotter’s tune, “Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.” Unfortunately, none of Lucy Mad’s music can be found online—it’s all gathering dust on reel-to-reel (someone better get on that). How many Kelsey Weasels does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Trick question! She snuck in and got the damn thing replaced yesterday. Naughty by nature? Kelsey Weasel (aka Kelsey Boyer) is HELFUL by nature! Seriously. She is the gal you want to call when your car breaks down, your kickstarter is in a slump or (god forbid) you run out of Maltort (or as my ignorant West Coast ass likes to call it, Mahlortz) Today, we talk about Kelsey's important work with Planned Parenthood (she served as online & community organizer from November 2016-October 2018), the joys of superfandom, becoming an engaged and active participant in the world of art, how to avoid burnout when trying to save the world, and the self-care release that is our shared (and totally not guilty) pleasure, 90s pop punk band Screeching Weasel! OK, we just talk a bunch about Screeching Weasel the whole time. Sue us. Warning: This episode contains frank discussion of the good, the bad and the ugly: Ben Weasel. Yep. We’re just two liberated feminists talking about how we let loose by doing the groin-o-rama in lieu of the age old “glass of wine and a bubble bath!” What would Betty Friedan say? Ah, she'd prolly do the groin-o-rama with us! *This episode features the new Hayley and the Crushers song "I Don't Wanna be like Johnny Ramone," which will be released on their new album Vintage Millennial courtesy of Eccentric Pop Records this winter 2019.* It also features the Screeching Weasel song "Outside of You" and The Riverdales song "Gemini Man." Do you have 99 projects and a bitch aint one? This girl does! The all-powerful songwriter/guitarist/reincarnated cat Jen Dot (aka Jennifer Larson aka Imma Dot aka Mystery Teacher of the Year) won my heart when, after our show together in Chicago last April, she gifted me a stack of her various band's many cassettes and a homemade zine. As Jen reminded me, it’s TOTALLY OK to have 99 projects! It’s true: Jen hasn't met a punk project she didn't want to tackle. In fact, she has so many exciting ideas (including a really cool book on 70s punk female musicians that I personally cannot wait to devour), she can actually procrastinate on one project merely by switching over to another project! I know a lot of artists who deal with these same kind of struggles (not bad struggles to have), so I hope our conversation helps to inspire you to finish that thing you’ve been putting off or maybe even start a new thing, if you’re so inclined. Jen also talks about what really drives her: the desire to DO while she CAN and to BE HERE NOW. It’s easier said than done, don’t you think? Jen is, of course, the reluctant leader of a few really good rad Chicago area bands, including Beastii, Das Dotz (formerly known as Jen and the Dots), and Swimsuit Addition. You’ll hear from the first two on this episode, so listen till the end! Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries are good for the ears, the eyes, the heart and the belly! How do I know this? Well, Alice Bag told me on Episode 17! She actually produced the high-calorie group’s new self-titled album, which you an pre-order now from Emotional Response Records (out Nov. 9)! I also know this because I have gobbled up the Fresno Grrrl Gang’s entire catalog like a hot pack of pink Starburst and I now feel just a teeny bit better about being a lady rocker in America. Today, I discuss the “Show me Your Boobs” incident that happened during my tour in Colorado this past July. Huge thanks to to Rachel Hutcheson and Travis Rosen for sharing the 8/12/18 episode of their political podcast Irreverent Testimony, and for amplifying the voices of women everywhere. Part 1 of my 2 part adventure at Girls Rock Camp Santa Barbara! Enjoy this conversation with Girls Rock Camp Santa Barbara staff member and musician Chloe Danger, who is full of wise words and wry wit. She started off as a camper at the Girls Rock Camp at 16 and has gone on to ensure no girl is ever left behind when it comes to rock n roll! This episode features Chloe Danger's fierce songs “Suzie Homemaker” and “Punk is Dead.” Special thanks to the entire staff and volunteer group at Girls Rock Camp SB for allowing me to take part in their very special camp and interact with the very talented campers. Alicia "Alice" Armendariz (a.k.a. Bag) is more than the riotous vocalist you know from seminal late 70s LA punk band, The Bags. Yes, she is known for igniting a fierce femme fire the LA/Hollywood punk scene back in the day, but that was only the seed of what she was planting. Now, she’s nearing 60, with brazen blue hair and a bold new album. She’s still punk, still pissed, and still giving back to her community. I caught up with Alice ahead of her anticipated summer 2018 tour. Today, we talk about her new politically charged solo album, Blueprint, why she still relates better to kids vs. grown ups, the magic of girls rock camps, her new favorite band Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries, and why giving back is the best way to give to yourself! Connect the Dots with Rachel Ratner of Seattle band Wimps! (PS: Her new album Garbage People drops July 13 and she's embarking on a national tour to celebrate)! She’s a musician, songwriter, vocalist, ten year veteran of KEXP and a web developer, to boot. She’s also the creator of the Seattle Band Map, which is why I call her “a true DIY punk rock connector!” The open-source Seatle Band Map connects all musicians from walks of life, visually exposing just how each band and individual musician overlaps. Spoiler alert: They overlap A LOT. Isn't it weird how we sometimes forget how our output entangles with others? Entanglements--or connections--are the real reward of a full life and a great artistic journey. Today we talk about forging friendships with other artists, DIY touring (and yes, we touch upon my favorite subject, Japan), her work with iconic Seattle radio station KEXP, being kind always, and--of course--connecting! I hope this episode inspires you to connect someone else and, in turn, be connected. It's that easy. Today, I talk busking in Berlin with my German correspondent and big sister Shakrah Yves! Busking is scary and strange and vulnerable and exciting, but it’s even crazier in a different country. Basically, busking is when you play for random people on the street, and it comes with all the joys and pitfalls you might expect. However, Berlin has its own crazy culture of street busking that's about as easy to understand as German. Today, life lessons learned from busking in Berlin and belting it out in the metro station (#1 tip: avoid the accordian player!!!). SO MUCH respect and love to my magical and talented singer, sister Shakrah Yves, for allowing me to record our weekly Skype call. She gives me inspiration every day, and you’ll see why on this episode. She truly embodies the ethos: Sparkle and Destroy. Listen till the end to hear her belt her heart out. Be a Unicorn in Your Field w/ Sound Engineer Emma Staake of Seattle, WA! There's plenty of "sound guys" out there in the world, but Emma is not one of them. I met Emma a gig in Seattle this past April (she was the "sound gal" for the show, and she did a smashing job at it, too). With the mantra to "be relentlessly herself," she has already made waves in her local Seattle music scene, both as a musician and from behind the mixing boards. She is thoughtful, funny, and wise beyond her years. Today, we talk practical tips for communicating sound needs on stage, time management, following your dreams, and opening the door for others to come in after you. As always, stick around till the end to hear some of Emma’s lovely handiwork. Her Song, "What You do" is haunting and beautiful. Wanna catch Hayley live? The apocolypse feels real this week. Thousands have been evacuated from Southern California due to the Thomas Fires. Two friends of mine, and of the band, have lost their home. Introducing a new series: "Behind the Music" features behind-the-scenes stories about Hayley and the Crushers' forthcoming album COOL LAME! Remember when the teacher would tell you, “Show your work?” Did you do it? Why or why not? It can be hard to share all the messy, complicated, and sometimes embarassing behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into recording a new album. Often, we want to show off the “polished” and “perfect” end product, instead of the real effort that goes into making our art. Never one to shy away from embarassing herself, Hayley Crusher Cain discects her most recent recording process and shares a raw track off Hayley and the Crushers’ upcoming album, COOL LAME, out this Spring. Live in Concert! See Hayley and the Crushers live at Harvard and Stone in LA this Nov. 30 for the Play Like a Girl LA Showcase! This is a free show and supports female led bands and musicians. Women are so often discouraged from being the leading characters of their own books and their own lives. From fairytales filled with evil witches and brainless princesses needing saving to being left out of history altogether, it is evident that we need to share our own stories boldly and without apology. In this special episode (read: RANT), Hayley rips apart a recent writer's workshop that includes a guy with a ponytail yelling, "Why is Bob's Wife such a BITCH?" Maybe it's because Bob is a small-minded misogynist Maybe Bob’s narrative sucks. Maybe Bob and his kind are on their way to extinction. Episode 6: How to Leap (and land on your feet) Alternate title: How the Worst of David Bowie can teach us the best about ourselves! *recorded in Berlin, Germany* Featuring my big sister, Shakrah Yves, who recently went from working as a seamstress at Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco to a burgeoning computer coder in Berlin. To say I am proud would be a massive understatement. I am changed by HER decision to change. We pose the question: Are you daring enough to change everything? To give up the comfort you know and take a leap to a new, strange land? What are the hardships you are willing to endure to make this earth-shattering change in your life? How will you dust yourself off and move forward? Clue: Forging close relationships and cultivating self love is key. On this episode: Let's get real. We totally talk about the serious stuff that comes with this kind of life change, but there's also a lot of laughing, giggling, joking and just being sisters. I hope you enjoy this very real peek into our special (glittery) relationship. And yes, this one’s recorded direct from Shakrah's kitchen in East Berlin with special guests David Bowie and Ertha Kit! Plus: Bad Berlin haircuts! Brogrammers! The struggle of the modern day jazz singer is real! Glueing rhinestones onto rhinestones! How we realized we are VERY American after all! Bonus: Cat saliva! Meditation! Drone fish! And so much more! Hey. I might even sing a little. Huge thanks to Shakrah Yves for opening up and allowing her annoying lil sis to ply her with random questions that are neither here nor there (as always). Plus, Hayley's band Hayley and the Crushers is on tour now! Episode 5: Transition to Truth Transition is hard for everyone. It is the necessary evil that takes us from who we are to who we're becoming. My friend Jordie Lynn Washburn understands this painful, uncomfortable, yet fulfilling leap of faith better than most. Her recent transition from the man the world knew her as to the woman who she was always meant to be was not easy or glamorous. However, on the other side, she found joy, love, laughter, rock n roll, and self empowerment in Santa Cruz, CA's artist community. Today, we talk about what it took to get past that overwhelming fear, self doubt, shame, and sadness. Jordie worried that friends and loved ones who have known her for years (myself included) would not know how to embrace this newfound person, with her big, beautiful grin and vivacious giggle. What she found, when she opened her eyes to the truth, was unbelievable: Love. Compassion. Strength. Encouragement. We hope to pass this big, juicy ball of love on to you today. No matter what you're dealing with, you are not alone. The world needs your truth. Transition into it, despite the fear. Just ask Jordie. It's TOTALLY worth it. We can all stand to be a bit more courageous, and we can thank today's guest for kickstarting our motivation! Jordie Lynn's dreamy band, Moonbeaux, is featured in this episode (stick around for extra tunes at the end). https://moonbeaux.bandcamp.com/album/ladies Tell Jordie how sexy her drumming is! No, seriously. Don't do that. But watch live Moonbeaux performances at Vimeo anyhow. : ) https://vimeo.com/160498873 Suicide Prevention Hotline (it gets better): https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org Get in touch with the Podcast at sparkleanddestroypod@gmail.com or @sparkleanddestroypod on Instagram. Hayley and her “darling” neighbor Darci Hafley vent about the silencing of feminism online and otherwise. Just because they don’t have “real jobs” and pay more for organic produce doesn’t mean you can blame all of your bitter failings on them. Hayley’s husband, silly cyber troll and bleak Gen Xer Dr. Reid Cain Esquire stops by to talk about tribal arm bands, how to sell a box of leaves, and the fact that we’re all going to die. What’s that noise?! Oh, it’s just the guttural moan of May Black, nasty, defiant front woman and guitarist for Oakland modern grunge rock band MUTT. Today, we talk about our favorite signs at the Women’s March (you can’t comb over injustice), the deal with white wine and flip flops, how to rise above pretentious guitar shop bros, and how to trust your gut when it comes to finding your sound, buying music gear, songwriting, performing, and just being real (whether you’ve got your shirt on or off). Also: Kurt Cobain never rolled out of bed and vomited out a perfectly complete, amazing song, so keep at it, sister. You’ve got to work at it, and May has done a lot of inner and outer work to get to the rock queendom she now enjoys today. It is all VERY glamorous, I can assure you. Plus: A rare phone call with a real life Mutt, Chihuahua terrier (?) miss Mavis, who recently enjoyed the pleasures of “street sausage.” Check out MUTT’s music and tour dates at https://muttmusic.bandcamp.com and note that proceeds from a portion of MUTT Fight Song T-Shirt sales are currently going to Planned Parenthood.
