In this podcast episode/series, your host Double J makes a relative comparison to the Seattle Grunge rock music & counterculture scene, compared to the 1960s Hippie rock music & counterculture scene out of Laurel Canyon. Totally 80s and 90s Recall

Smells Like Teen Spirit was the song that arguably changed the musical landscape in the early 90's. Many people saw the arrival of Nirvana and the Seattle “Grunge” sound as the end of hair bands, thrash metal and other 80's sounding rock and ushered in a new moodier style of music just in time for the new decade. Nirvana was a formative band for Dave and Rob, so this week, for the first time we'll concentrate on just one artist and explore our favorite facts and songs from their catalog. So whether you thought Nirvana changed the world or seemed overrated, we will spend some time and have some fun taking a look back at the musical experience that was the start of the Seattle musical takeover. While all of us enjoy Alice in Chains in general, this was the first time any of us had taken a deep-dive into a full album. You'll have to listen to get all nuances of our perspectives, but here's some standout talking points we could all agree on: - The vocal harmonies and instrumentation are rock solid on this album, presenting a very unique take on the Seattle Grunge music sound. - This album and the songwriting was incredibly dark, chronicling issues such as addiction, depression, violence, and PTSD. - We all strongly recommend this album for anyone who likes grunge music, and has even a passing familiarity of Alice in Chains. We've resisted covering some BIG albums on Classic Albums over the year or so that we've been putting these out but one area we simply couldn't resist dipping our toe into any longer was the Seattle Grunge (not a genre) scene. And in typical Riot Act fashion, we start with an album which is about as far away from the 'typical' grunge sound as you can get.  In this first part of a two part special, we look back at Superunknown, the 4th (or 5th) album by Soundgarden. Remfry leads the chat and states his case for Superunknown being not only an undeniable classic but pretty much one of the best records of all time (and there's little disagreement from Steve). Released on 8th March 1994, Superunknown was an expansive, experimental smorgasbord of sound that explored a rich tapestry of psychedelia, stoner rock, crooner vocals and doom-laden riffs, an album which takes a Black Sabbath mixed with The Beatles approach as its starting point(!) and twists that idea into ever more exploratory and fascinating territory.  Universally lauded upon its release, Superunknown was released at a strange time for the scene that the band had sprung from. As George Garner put it so eloquently in his retrospective feature on the album for Kerrang!, “Soundgarden were the first of the big grunge acts to sprout and yet the last to bloom.” This had advantages and disadvantages and with the death of Kurt Cobain exactly 4 weeks after Superunknown was released, the tide was beginning to turn in the press and audience's interests. But Soundgarden easily transcended the term grunge for those who weren't blinded by trends and Superunknown is a rich banquet of delights which will endure forever.  This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Coming in at number 17 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1992 album from Screaming Trees, Sweet Oblivion. Joining Bakko for this episode is co-host of the Shout It Out Loudcast Tom Gigliotti. Tom and Bakko take a deep dive on this standout album from a Seattle Grunge band that is often overlooked. The Screaming Trees one-upped their major-label debut, Uncle Anesthesia, with this solid, vastly underrated effort. Sweet Oblivion's lead single, the jumpy hard rocker "Nearly Lost You," proved itself a highlight on the hugely successful, Seattle-themed Singles soundtrack. But even though the Screaming Trees stacked up quite well against their more famous peers in that particular showcase, the exposure didn't make them stars. Perhaps it was because Sweet Oblivion had been released several months before Singles, and the band thus couldn't build a sense of anticipation for a new album release, the way Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins did for Dirt and Siamese Dream, respectively; nor could they capitalize on the extra publicity that goes along with new releases. For whatever reason, Singles didn't push sales of Sweet Oblivion, as the latter only scraped the lower reaches of the Billboard charts. And that's a shame, because the record is quite good -- the best songs here are easily among the best in their catalog, and the songwriting was their most consistent yet. "Nearly Lost You" is a standout, of course, but "Dollar Bill," "Shadow of the Season," and "Butterfly" are nearly as impressive. Mark Lanegan's raspy voice conveys a weary wistfulness that adds an unexpected dimension to the group's otherwise macho garage-psych grunge. The Trees no longer sound all that punkish, trading in some of their early, noisy fury for a more '70s-indebted hard rock sound, but it's done with a graceful power that proves they were at least the equal of their more famous fellow scenesters. Unfortunately, the four-year hiatus between Sweet Oblivion and its follow-up, Dust, ensured that the band would be forever relegated to cult status. - All Music

When you think of the “Seattle Grunge” scene from the early 90’s, you think of the usual suspects: Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and maybe Alice in Chains. The term grunge was a term coined by generally unimaginative press people and so-called pundits. In the early days, it was just a collection of guys playing in bands that dug classic rock, punk and heavy metal and the weird stew they concocted became known as grunge. One of the unsung heroes of this was Skin Yard, a band that influenced and even shared members with many of above-mentioned bands. Formed by produced Jack Endino, C/Z Records main man Daniel House and vocalist Ben McMillan in 1985, it is our opinion that they provided the template for what the dreary Seattle sound would become. We’re going to talk about Hallowed Ground, which is largely considered their crowning achievement.Intro: “In the Blackhouse”Outro: “Wither” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dan McDonald and I discuss a lot of things in this episode. We talk about how two guys from such different backgrounds can wind up being friends. He reveals the effects of a life-changing event that happened when he was 15, when he lost his eye.. Dan McDonald talks about his 20 year career as a musician. His experience as an up and coming rock star in the Seattle Grunge scene, and the inherent pitfalls of that lifestyle. Dan candidly tells us what happened, that turned his life around. We discuss fatherhood, divorce, true love, and friendship. Finally, Dan McDonald gives us his three biggest things to focus on, that will help us be better men today than we were yesterday. They are: Accountability Perpetual Improvement and Awareness of Legacy. The band started out in the early 1980s in the state of Victoria and (albeit not with the same lineup) are still around in 2015.  Bands and artists such as Eddie Vedder, King Buzzo (The Melvins), Mudhoney, L7 and Butch Vig all line up not only to sing the Psychos' praises, but to tell their own personal stories from the road travelling with the band. They all convincingly state the case that the Seattle Grunge sound started in Melbourne with the Cosmic Psychos. Director Matt Weston has combined interviews about tales on the road and hedonism with fatherhood, weightlifting, dealing with divorce, tragedy, bondage.....and tractors. Yes, the band might seem to have the usual Spinal Tap type hijinks (don't fall asleep when your bandmate has a salmon in his suitcase), but this film does far more to show a tale of real people and the human influence the leave as well as the music influence.   Join Tim, Sticky, Wendi and Maurice to hear their thoughts on the film and the band.   If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists so more folks can tune in.   You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes or download from http://seehear.podbean.com. Born in the first half of the third millennium, the Milan, Italy-based band, Neodea, performs a modern reinterpretation of rock & roll from the U.S., particularly the Seattle Grunge music of the 1990s. Discovered by Cristiano Santini (former leader of the late eighties Italian band called Disciplinatha), they worked together to produce their debut album, “Teorema del delirio” (Delirium Theory) with technical assistance from Francesco Donadello the drummer of the band Giardini Di Mirò. In 2010, thanks to the enthusiasm for the song, “Violet”, the band is invited to play for Amnesty International’s contest “Voci per la libertà” (Voices for the Freedom). In 2011, the band meets Luca Venturi, the producer of well-known mainstream artists like Sugarfree, La Differenza, Barbara Monte and Micaela Foti. Together they produce the EP, “Scorre Lento” (Slowly Flowing) recorded at Sonic Factory with Mauro Isetti and Egidio Perduca and mixed in Metropolis Studio in Milan by Alessandro Marcantoni. In 2013 the Seattle connection grew even stronger, Neodea was invited to perform on a summer tour in the Emerald City. They performed in historic music venues, toured many Seattle rock and rock landmarks and are hosted on hugely popular radio station, KISW, which for the first time broadcasts a non local band on the popular, long-running show, “Loud And Local” stating that Neodea “is a Seattle band, but born in Italy”. Neodea signed a one song contract with London Tone Music and were thrilled to record the song at the legendary London Bridge Studio, the same studio where all of their favorite music was recorded including, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone. http://londontonemusic.com
