    Who are the Poor?

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” — Luke 6:20 God's concern for the poor is written all over the pages of Scripture. Nearly 500 verses in the Bible express God's concern for the needy and God's desire to act on their behalf. But who are the poor? They are varied, and the Bible has many different words to describe them. Some people are poor because they have no money or wealth. Some are simply dependent on others. Some are poor by choice. Some are poor because of misfortune, and some are poor because of poor decisions they made. Most commonly, the poor are those who are oppressed, suffering not only material poverty but also social poverty from lack of power and opportunity. They are poor, vulnerable, and weak. God cares for them all. The Bible teaches that God has concern not just for people who are materially poor but also for those who are put down, oppressed, marginalized, shunned, denied opportunity, and overlooked. Again and again the Bible reveals the God who shows the poor his “tender mercies,” offering himself in promises of protection and provision. Followers of Jesus are called to imitate God's compassion, care, and mercy, lovingly assisting the poor in whatever ways are required, whether it means helping individuals, revitalizing communities, or working to create a more just and sustainable world. Jesus, you blessed the poor with your words and your love. Teach us to do the same. Amen.

707 Which Life Are We Talking About? - Matthew 16:26

Follower of One : Missions For The Rest Of Us

When we talk about life, which one are we talking about? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. We've spent a few days talking about Matthew 16:24-25. Today, I want to add verse 26. I'll read the complete passage, and today I'm reading from the English Standard Version. "Then Jesus told his disciples if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"   I think these verses are pretty well known. Many of us have heard them before. And if you were listening the last few days, we started talking about Jesus' commands to follow Him. And then we continued with verse 25, yesterday's episode, about losing our life, or gaining it, finding it. And then today I have to ask the question about life because you see the word translated life in verse 25 is the same Greek word that's translated soul in verse 26. I don't know why the translators did that, but I think oftentimes it's hard for us to remember that there are two lives going on. When we're born, we're born into a temporal life and it has a definite end. There's some time in the future when it will end, all of us have experienced that death, or we will. It's one of those things. It's not fun to talk about, and most of us try and act like it's not going to happen, but it does. It happens to each one of us. There's another life that can never end. And that life, I believe we also live, and that life will never end, but the latter parts of it may be really bad for some of us and the rest of the latter years, the eternal life, will be very good for many of us.   I think Jesus is making a point here in verse 26, that if we gain the whole world, if we get everything that we wanted, if I do everything on my to-do list from yesterday's conversation, if I do accomplish all my goals and all my objectives and everything else, and still don't get to take part in that eternal life, that is the joy and life that I get to spend with Jesus, then I've lost everything. And I believe the reminder for us today as Marketplace Christians is to remember that our words and our actions and the way that we live can give life to others. That's our job, I believe as followers of Jesus. Our job is to live in such a way that other people see and are reminded about the second life. About that life that will never end that we get to spend with Jesus forever.   I don't think that life begins when we die. I read a book called "Eternity is Now in Session" by John Ortberg, and I agree very much with the teaching of that book, and that's some of where I got my opinions. So you can check that book out. But it suggests that our eternity begins the day that we're saved. We begin to live this life that we experience when we're with and following Jesus. And that life is what we have to give away, to show other people. That's our job as ministers is to make that second life visible to the rest of the world.   I wanna encourage you today as a follower of Jesus Christ - let your light shine. Let that second life be visible through your actions and the way that you give away your first life. By taking extra time for people, by being generous, by sharing, and by blessing others. We can live in such a way that we attract other people to wonder about that second life.   And I believe this passage points that out for us. It will not profit us if we gain the whole world and we lose that second life. So let's live in such a way that we challenge the people around us. Thanks so much for being a Marketplace Minister, and thanks for following Jesus Christ. Let's give our life away so that we can follow Jesus and make Him visible to the people around us. And also consider joining us at https://community.Followerofone.org where we try and help one another, do these very things every day.   Thanks very much.

On this week's episode of the Welcome to the Metaverse podcast, we're diving back into the web3 play and earn gaming space. As you'll likely know by now if you've been listening to the podcast, there is a big fundamental movement around digital ownership in games, allowing players to own, level up and trade their in-game items as NFTs, enabling full game economies. Gaming is the biggest entertainment industry on the planet and it's a really clear use of NFTs but also this category of web3 gaming is in its infancy and games, especially good, fun games, by their very nature take time to build. On this episode I chat to Michael Le aka justmaiko, a TikTok creator with over 50 million subscribers and over 10 billion views along with tech entrepreneur Robin Defay, who together are the co-founders of Joystick - a platform which provides education, content and access to gaming assets for players to use and keep 100% of their revenue whilst doing so, which is an interesting model. I really enjoyed this conversation and web3 gaming is undoubtedly a major trend and movement that is coming, so it's something we'll continue to revisit and stay updated on. I am using this today to share Caroline's story. This is a person who works hard every day, and is DAMN good at her job, as the high-profile colleagues that have shared her plight can attest! She is not asking for a handout, but merely for BofA to help her with her claim, as protecting her money is supposedly one of the commitments they give her and their clients. What does it mean to put Jesus first or to follow Him? And how can we know that we're doing it right? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. I hope in five minutes to answer that question, but it's a little challenging. It started the last couple of episodes, we've been talking about following Jesus. And yesterday we read Matthew 16:24. Today, I want to include Matthew 16:25 and talk a little bit about the difference between putting God first and following Jesus. "Then Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone just to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." That's Matthew 16:24-25 from the New American Standard Bible, the 1995 iteration.   You have to qualify all this, which translations you're using anymore. It's getting a little complex. The point that I wanna make in today's passage is following Jesus is not just another thing that I do. My to-do list is booked, just like yours. We have a ton of things going on. Many of us have trouble saying no, and we overcommit, or we have too many things that are pulling on us and tugging on us. I hear people often talk about how they try and put God first and then their family second, and then their job third, and things like that. And I realize, and I believe this passage, Matthew 16:25, tells us that God isn't first, that God is all, and that then we organize everything based on what God says. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."   I want God to be everything that I do when I go to work. That's because that's what God has for me to do today. When I serve my bosses or pray for my coworkers or pray for the people around me, it's because I wanna be better at following God and following Jesus and doing what He says. When I look at my to-do list today, I'm swamped. I have a ton of things that I have committed to do. Many of those commitments were made trying to run a ministry. I'm in the middle of this. But at the same time, I'm not consulting God as much as I feel like I probably should. I need to listen to Him more and I want to hear Him talk and I want to hear His direction and His guidance. I wanna find his ease and his peace.   I need to be quicker to say no or slower to say yes because I want to lose my life for His sake. And I have to figure out how to do that. "Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it." I keep constantly struggling with trying to do what I want my schedule, on my timeline, my issues, my goals, my ideals.   Today, I commit to you, and I'm trying to be as honest as I can, I want to turn that around. I want to give God more of my life. I want to say, what would you have me do in everything that I'm doing in the way that I record these podcasts? In the way that I interact with people around Follower of One? In the way that I do service for others or interact with people, the way I pay bills, everything about what's going on in my life. The way I interact with my family, it needs to be God driven.   And I believe that's what it means to lose my life for His sake. Today, let's lose our lives a little more for Jesus's sake, ask Him where He would have you do that, and ask Him to put you to work in the lives of the people that you interact with every day. Let's trust God more, and watch Him use us.   Thanks for being a Marketplace Minister. And thanks for following Jesus. Why not help us follow Him better by joining our online community at https://community.Followerofone.org.   Thanks very much.

Do you find yourself in a position of wondering about the cost of following Jesus? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. We've been talking for a couple of episodes about following Jesus and where the places in scripture where He said follow me. Today I wanna read Matthew 16:24, "Then Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." We actually talked about this passage, this similar phrase, this statement of Jesus from Luke back in Episode 104. If you want to check out that episode, it was several years ago now.   But look at this passage, "Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." There are three conditions here: denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Jesus. In the verse in Luke, it actually says "take up your cross daily."   Following Jesus has a price. Jesus makes this statement in Matthew 16, right after He told Peter to get behind Him, satan, you are a stumbling block to me. He's explaining to the disciples that He's going to die. He's explaining to them the cost of doing what God wants. Hanging onto our lives and our desires and the things that we think put us at odds with God. God's model is exactly opposite ours. Our natural faith, our natural beliefs, our natural way of living is all 180 degrees at odds with God. Over time, we can train ourselves a little bit to think like God and to do what He would have us do.   But it's so different, and it's so foreign that Jesus makes this point: we must deny ourselves, we must take up our cross, and then we follow Him. I want to listen to Jesus and obey Him and do what He says. Oftentimes that calls me to a place where I'm not comfortable. And I don't understand what's going to happen next. All my little plans and all my ideas of the way things are going to work just don't fit.   Jesus has a different strategy for us and it all exists on the other side of us following Him. That's the idea. We follow Jesus. We don't get to make this up for ourselves. Our guesses, and our tendencies, and our beliefs don't naturally bring us to the place where we're following Jesus, where we're part of His strategy, and we're part of His plan. Our natural lives and our natural personalities take us totally out of the realm of where He gets to control and He's being glorified and where His plan is being executed. And that's why we have to remind ourselves regularly to follow Him. Today, I want to challenge us as Marketplace Christians. If we wish to come after Him, we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. The command to take up our cross, that's a command to die. Denying ourselves means we stop focusing on what we want and instead try and focus on what Jesus wants. This three-step plan: deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him means that we turn from our own desire, we realize that our own desires aren't ever coming back, and then we follow Him.   Following Jesus is very expensive and yet it's the most rewarding thing that we can ever do. I hope that you follow Jesus. I'm grateful that you listen to this podcast and you are a Marketplace Minister. I'm grateful that you serve other people on a daily basis so that Jesus might become visible. That's the definition of a Marketplace Minister. Often we use the term that we're just helping other people move one notch closer to Jesus. And if you're doing that today, you're a Marketplace Minister. Thanks for joining us. You might even check out a group of us who are trying to do this on a daily basis. We connect through our online community at https://community.Followerofone.org.   Thanks very much.

Hey Nick Abbot listeners, here's a brand new podcast we think you'd like, called The Followers. Shelagh Fogarty began her LBC career as a guest presenter in 2014, and her balanced and calm presenting style soon earned her a permanent role. Heartbreakingly, it was this calm approach which led to the most harrowing ordeal of Shelagh's life, when a man stalked her for nearly 2 years. In 2017, Shelagh began to notice the same face appearing in crowds, on the tube, outside her work. She dismissed it at first, but then the appearances became more and more frequent and noticeable - he was there when she met friends, when she travelled across London, at her local train station, and even when he followed her home.??The Followers is a 5-part LBC podcast series where Shelagh talks about the disturbing stages she went through during her stalking: dismissing it, fearing it, and feeling powerless as she was forced to live a limited life. The podcast also included conversations with experts and victims, looking at how societal views, misogyny and popular media tropes may be enabling stalkers to commit crimes without intervention.? Shelagh wanted to tell her story and to speak with various experts to understand more about obsessive and controlling behaviour, to deal with what happened to her on a personal level and to help others identify the behaviour that can lead to stalking. When was the last time you said not now to a prompting from God? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. Often I am tempted, when I get an idea from God, I get tempted to say not now or not right now, or can I do it later? Today's passage is Matthew 8:21-22, I'm reading from the English Standard Bible. "Another of the disciples said to him, Lord, let me first go and bury my father. And Jesus said to him, follow me and leave the dead to bury their own dead."   Some people, when they first read this, the first time they read the scriptures, or the first time they come across this passage, they think that all this guy's making a reasonable request. He's just asking for delay while he goes to his dad's funeral. But the way this is done, a lot of scholars believe that this man's father isn't dead yet. He's talking about, I wanna do this as soon as I'm done working for my dad or when I'm done doing whatever it is I'm doing when I receive my inheritance after I've received my inheritance.   And Jesus is saying to him, look. Go with me. The rest of this is noise. What's happening in the world. If you're not following me is noise. There's another story in Luke chapter 10. Where Jesus goes over to Martha's for dinner and Martha's sister Mary, instead of helping with the dinner was sitting, listening to Jesus as he spoke, and Martha was distracted with everything she was trying to do. And so she asked Jesus to straighten out her sister, send my sister into the kitchen so that she can help me with what's going on. And Jesus, in, in Luke 10:42 says "only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good part, which can't be taken away from her."   Jesus is challenging us that focusing on and following Jesus isn't the top priority, it's the only priority. Following him is the one necessary thing we're being challenged in this passage to drop what we're doing and follow Jesus. Today in our workplace, are we being challenged to drop what we're doing and follow Jesus.   Now I'm not telling you to stop doing your job. Following Jesus means that we do our job well. We honor our commitments, but there are ways where we can focus our brain and our mind on the things that Jesus would have us do. We can pray for the people around us. That's one of the easiest ways to engage our faith and to follow Jesus in whatever we're doing today is pray for the person you're looking at.   Pray for the person across the cube from you or pray for your boss. Instead of whining, like I used to whine about my bosses wanted done, and I would disagree with the way that companies that I worked for were being run. Instead of criticizing them, why not pray for them? We can follow Jesus with our daily actions in this moment, by simply praying for the person that comes to mind. Ask God to show you how he would have you follow him.   And then let's do it today. Let's not delay or say not now. If God gives you an idea, and he's just given me one, as I'm recording this podcast, I have something to do as soon as this recording is over. So that I'm not saying not now to him, but I'm going with him when he goes. Now. It's interesting to note too, that in the next verse, his disciples followed him.   "When he got into the boat," it says "his disciples followed him." That's Matthew 8:23. If we're not following him, we need to question whether or not we're disciples. Let's try and make more and more of our life the simple act of following him. To become a disciple of his is simply to follow him. That's the reason why our organization is called Follower of One.   We want to follow him. Today, let's follow him, ask him how you can follow him in the very thing that you have to do today. He's there and he's in charge and he'll make it happen. And also if you want to join a community of people who are bent on trying to do this with their life, check out our online community at https://community.Followerofone.org.   Thanks very much.

Where has following Jesus taken you? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast, I'm grateful that you listened to these, and hopefully you share them as well. Today. I want to talk about the call to follow Jesus. And I wanna read Mark 1:17 from the English Standard Version. "And Jesus said to them follow me. And I will make you become fishers of men."   I wanna think a little bit today about what following Jesus does. It transforms our life. It's like my life changes in proportion to the degree that I can follow him and pursue him and do what he would have me do. The more I learn about Jesus and the more I get to know him. By doing what he asks and by hanging out with his people, by studying his word, and by listening to the holy spirit that lives within me. The more I follow Jesus, the more I become different, and the more I experience things differently. I love the command to follow Jesus. I think that's what makes us unique.   As Christians, we can believe in Jesus and never really follow him. But I believe when we follow him, he starts to transform our lives. And what ends up happening is we start to abandon things that we were hanging onto. Our flesh wants to hang onto the world. It wants to hang onto a comfort. It wants to hang onto its own peace and its own sense of self, fulfillment. But when we let go of those things to grab a hold of Jesus and to follow him more closely, we learn that those things are actually a distraction. The real act is in following Christ. We start to see things happen that matter forever.   We will take actions that make a difference in the lives of the people around us and people are what we'll live forever. And so the things that we do to interact with people, to help them move one much closer to Jesus, those things matter forever. And that whole phrase about helping others move one notch closer to Jesus is something that I kind of thought up through a combination of resources and ideas when I was trying to figure out how to be a missionary in my workplace.   I wanted to go into full-time ministry. I wanted my life to matter for Jesus and the idea of helping the people around me move one notch closer to him seemed to be a good idea. It seemed to be something that I could do every day in any of my jobs.   That helped me beyond mission with Jesus in spite of my circumstances or my situation or where I am today. And I think that's our challenge as Christ followers. If we've responded to this request in Mark 1:17, Jesus is actually calling Andrew and Peter or Simon. He's calling them, he's saying, follow me and I will make you become fishers of men. They left everything. They left their ships, they left their job, and their career. They left everything. I wonder the degree to which we follow Jesus if it doesn't also end up being our eternal reward. And therefore I want to follow him better   Today, I wanna challenge us as Christ followers, let's follow him better. Listen to the promptings that you get. If you get an idea that will bring glory to God, figure out how to do it. Today's the day. Let's follow him a little more and become fishers of men. Let's become the people that Jesus would have us be drawing people and encouraging them to move one notch closer to him.   Thank you for being a marketplace minister. Thank you for making a difference in the world and in the lives of the people around you. Our actions, because we follow Jesus matter. And therefore your actions today matter. I wanna challenge you ask the holy spirit what he would have you do today and then figure out how you can do it.   One of those things may be to join us in Follower of One. We're a community of believers who are committed to this idea that there's a calling for us every day. You can check it out at https://community.Followerofone.org.   Thanks very much.

We are expected to parent perfectly, have well-behaved kids, take care of the house and everything else. This is so unrealistic and unattainable. Gabrielle and I keep it real, say it like it is, and are honest about the fact that we mess up, parenting is hard and some days it's fine to say you don't want to do it or Special Time! Bank of America impacting a bunch of disenfranchised people? Who would have guessed. The bank known for this did it again in Houston, TX, cite of some notable BofA instances in the past. A family of Afghan Refugees, who left during the uprising that led to the Taliban being in power again last year, were impacted by one of the world's largest banks in a silly way. So after the stay in a camp in New Jersey, the Khairkhan family set up shop in Houston Texas. When Khairuddin, the father, went to the BofA in Houston to cash the check he was given by the US Treasury (IRS), he was told that he could NOT do so, and was told he had to open an account in order to do so (Lie #1, government checks are to be cashed no matter what by non-clients and clients alike). He did just that, and in some bizarre sequence, the teller ended up putting the check in the wrong account with a man with a similar name.. Makes no sense, because the slips are pre-printed with their account numbers when opening an account. Either the teller used an alternate way to end up making the mistake or someone is hiding something. Nonetheless, the money went into the wrong account on April 1, and as of Thursday, Khairuddin didn't have the money, and a couple of people I met on Twitter, Mama J and David Godwin, who were helping these folks chimed in, which I responded. Within 24 hours, and without my help, they got the family on the news, on ABC 13 in Houston in which BofA finally apologized and promised to fix it, although their statement leaves something to be desired in my opinion about what they are actually doing to this family. In fact, I feel they are still being profiled. I break it down from all angles, including my experience with NRAs (Non Resident Aliens), account opening, making mistakes, and how and why a manager does or does not help in these cases. Plus, I discuss the direction of my BofA book in light of recent events that happened in my life! All 5 episodes will be available from July 4th exclusively on Global Player. Download it now from the App store or go to https://www.globalplayer.com If you think you or someone you know is being stalked, please call the police or the National stalking helpline on 0808 802 0300

Jesus' gospel is not just the offer of salvation, but the declaration of sovereignty. This is the clear message of His Sermon on the Mount. It is a call to find the truly blessed life by taking a narrow path most won't choose - the way of King Jesus.
