Turkeys and Eagles, Part 5: Following Jesus Changes Everything in Our Families MESSAGE SUMMARY:    Series Overview: This Series has been looking at Paul's letter to the Ephesians to point out “Turkeyisms” – those things of our culture and some worldviews by which we may have been duped into beliefs inconsistent with the Gospel of Jesus or behaving in a manner that is not what Christianity is all about. This Series has pointed out some changes in our thinking needed to be like “Eagles” so that we can be the people that God wants and expects us to be. Today's Sermon: A look into Ephesians 5 provides a perspective on many “Turkeyisms”; however, the focus today is just on one: Turkey Thinking – “My Christianity has no effect on my family relationships, but my upbringing does”; but Eagle Thinking – My Christianity places me in the Kingdom of God with a radically different view of family relationships”. Being in the Kingdom of God Changes everything for those that follow Jesus. Marriage in America is having a rough time, and we can't say that Christian marriage is different. Too many of us, who say that we follow Jesus today, don't let Christianity follow us through the front door as we live our secular lives. In the First Century of the Ephesians, both Jewish and Greek laws greatly diminished the roles, respect for, and value of women. In the Roman world, of the same period, women and children were just passed around – women had many husbands. It was into this world of Judaism and Greco Roman culture that Jesus walked in; and we found Jesus respecting and honoring women. Jesus raised the status of women – Jesus brought a whole new way of thinking about family, marriage, children, and divorce into First Century culture that has provided an ethical context for two thousand years. In the same period and culture, Paul came along; and he set up churches. He wrote letters, which were written in the culture of this period, to the Christians in churches like the church in Ephesus. These early Christians were a part of the Kingdom of God – the blessed followers of Jesus – they were called to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to be imitators of Jesus. Therefore, followers of Jesus were to be vessels of His light to the world. Followers of Jesus were to be different from this culture of the period. By being different in their families, followers of Jesus would transform the culture (which, eventually, they did!!!). From Ephesians 5:21, we are to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ”. “Submitting” is treating others like you wish to be treated. In Ephesians 5, Paul applies this principle of Christianity to the family (i.e. wives, husbands, and children) and to the workplace (i.e. employees). The Kingdom of God calls us to loving family relationships; therefore we, as followers of Jesus, are called to be different and not a part of the culture.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Tell us what you think of this episode It was 1956 when Dr Subrahmanyam Ganesh arrived in Wales from India to work in the NHS. He was already a fan of Glamorgan, having followed their 1948 County Championship win on the radio. Wilf Wooller was one of his favourite players. On leaving India, his father told him: “Don't be a stranger in your adopted country. Become a useful member of the community and give something back in return.” This he did – and more! The final week of the Divine Design series focuses on sexual temptation. With the key idea being that “sex is different”. Followers of Jesus should approach sexual temptation by grounding their identity in Christ as children of God. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 6 and Matthew 5, we see that while culture may say “I have the right to do anything,” not everything is beneficial, and sexual sin uniquely affects a person's own body. Because sex unites two people into “one flesh,” believers are called to treat their bodies as belonging to the Lord and empowered by His resurrection life. Scripture commands Christians to flee sexual immorality, take temptation seriously, and remove anything that leads them into sin, as Jesus' strong language about cutting off what causes stumbling illustrates. Overall, sex is spiritually significant, sexual sin is uniquely damaging, and God calls His people to resist temptation through decisive action and a clear understanding of who we are in Christ.

Chapter 2 of Nehemiah is about his own return to Jerusalem; it finished with his rebuke to those who opposed the rebuilding of its walls; these were an Ammonite and an Arab (v.19), they did not want the Jews to be able to defend themselves.  But the Jews set to work – and it was a most remarkable team effort!As we read ch. 3  we counted 33 individuals and groups who each did their part in rebuilding parts of the wall, noting the words, “and next to him … and after him.”  For example, “Jedaiah … repaired the wall opposite his home” [v.10]  then Shallum, “ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, repaired, he and his daughters” [v.12] – it was an all-out effort with the women helping too! The gates also had to be repaired and put in place (v.14,15)   The priests also were involved (v.22), no one was exempt.This Is the same in building up the “body of Christ”!  Nehemiah inspired in them such a will to work that they completed the work “in fifty two days” [6 v.15] despite the increasing opposition we will read of tomorrow.Let's consider the spiritual counterpart to all this, we do not have a human Nehemiah urging us on, instead we have our Lord Jesus. How conscious are we that “he has said ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you'” [Heb.13 v.5]In Hebrews ch.12 believers are urged to “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith …” [v.1,2]     In Eph. 2 v.21,22 we saw that believers are building on the foundation the prophets and Apostles laid – and Jesus is the “cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.  In him you also are being built together …”Paul told the Corinthians, “Let each one take care how he builds upon it” [1 Cor. 3 v.10] and in I Thessalonians which we started reading today, Paul says, “since we belong to the day” and not the darkness of this world, “therefore encourage one another and build one another up” [5 v.8,11]Followers of Christ are a team and teamwork is vital! We have no head but Christ (Eph. 4 v.15).  Sadly those who have strayed from the way the church was ‘built' in the first centuries resort to having leaders, teamwork among them is minimal, if it exists at all.  So the example of teamwork we are reading in Nehemiah is an example for true believers of all ages
