Episode 125: So, you want another job? That’s a pretty normal kind of desire for millions of people. Maybe there’s a better job out there that pays more money. Maybe the place you work just stinks, it’s abusive or you’re the target of sexual harassment. So, ok, off you go to polish up the old resume and start looking…well it isn’t that easy. You, and millions of people like you, may be trapped by a bad contract clause. I’ll talk about that wrinkle today with an expert leading a campaign to give a lot more freedom to millions of workers. Then, it’s a fresh in-depth look with AFL-CIO trade expert Celeste Drake at the state of play of negotiations over the new North American Free Trade Agreement. In short, it’s still a bad deal.
Episode 110: Join me in choking on the following three words: Trump was right. When he criticized the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as a bad deal during the 2016 campaign, he was telling a truth that resonated for many working people—even though, of course, Trump, who defrauded thousands of people who worked for him and would pile lie after lie about workers and unions, was certainly not going to blow up NAFTA on behalf of working people. But, there is now a draft of NAFTA 2.0. In this episode, I dig deep into what it says and means. Most of the episode is a great conversation between two trade experts who are peoples’ advocates: Lori Wallach, the director of Global Trade Watch, and Celeste Drake, the trade and globalization policy specialist at the AFL-CIO. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3
President Donald Trump has floated the idea of aiding farmers with a $12 billion package amid the recent barrage of U.S. tariffs — a clear anticipation of the tariffs’ impact on U.S. jobs. Agricultural groups like the American Farm Bureau Federation have criticized the surge in U.S. tariffs, saying Chinese retaliatory tariffs will likely hurt U.S. farmers. Automobile companies are also caught in the crosshairs: foreign companies with operations in the U.S., such as Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Kia Motors Corporation, said the added tariffs pose a risk to U.S. workers, according to the Association of Global Automakers. Will the Trump administration’s tariff actions live up to Trump’s campaign promises? For this episode of Cases & Controversies, Bloomberg Law international trade reporter Dave Sebastian speaks with Celeste Drake, a trade and globalization specialist at AFL-CIO, and William Hoagland, senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center.
