"It was a long journey because I think I've been writing television now twenty-five years. I never really had the directing bug. I always loved writing and I like being behind the scenes and, in television, writers have so much control anyway to rise up the ranks and run the show and hire the directors, so I mostly had just great collaborations with directors. Especially on Sex and the City, we had really filmic talented directors and it was like one plus one equals three, I felt, collaborating with the directors, but there was a film that I was hired to rewrite. At the time it was called Whatever Makes You Happy that became Otherhood. And Mark Andrus (who won an Oscar for his script As Good As It Gets) had done the first adaptation, which I loved, so when I was hired to rewrite it, I thought why are they messing with this? I just want to protect what I love about it."Cindy Chupack is a writer, executive producer and director. We're going through an extraordinary, collective experience--a national emergency caused by COVID-19. Thousands have fallen ill and died, and America has shut down. What is this shared experience telling us about America? Listen as three of my colleagues--Michael, Monica, and Steve--talk about this important question.
I was joined by returning favorite Scott Chupack to talk all about the pilot episode of NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, "Pilot".
Cindy Chupack has won two Emmys and three Golden Globes as TV writer/producer whose credits include “Sex and the City,” “Better Things,” “Divorce,” “Modern Family," “Everybody Loves Raymond,” and most recently Showtime’s darkly comic hour “I’m Dying Up Here.” She is the author of two comic memoirs: the New York Times bestseller The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays, and The Longest Date: Life as a Wife. Last year she directed her first episode of television for "I’m Dying Up Here," and her first feature, OTHERHOOD, starring Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette, and Felicity Huffman. OTHERHOOD is a comedy Chupack co-wrote that premiered this week in select theaters and on Netflix. It feels very paint by numbers so it seems so easy - but it's not. As soon as I get good and comfortable I want to take a risk. To challenge myself. -Cindy Chupack
I was joined by first-time guest Scott Chupack to talk all about the 2002 pilot episode of HBO's The Wire, "The Target".
CINDY CHUPACK is a two-time Emmy Award-winning writer and producer, best known for her work on "Sex & The City," "Modern Family," "Everybody Loves Raymond," and "Coach." She has also won three Golden Globes for her work. Her first screenplay, an adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel "How To Be Good," made the 2008 blacklist of best unproduced screenplays, she is attached to direct her first feature film called "Whatever Makes You Happy" for Netflix, and is about to start work as a co-executive producer under Jim Carrey on "I'm Dying Up Here," a new Showtime series about the comedy scene in 1970's Los Angeles. In addition to writing for television and film, Chupack has written two books, "The Between Boyfriends Book," and "The Longest Date: Life as a Wife."
If you want to know what it's really like to write for groundbreaking TV shows like Sex and the City and Modern Family, pen a memoir (or two), or just marry a hot stud, this interview is for you. Few writers are as dexterous across mediums or as prolific as Cindy Chupack. Her ability to be as heartfelt as she is hilarious is evident in her essays in The New York Times Modern Love section, storytelling at The Moth, and episodes of Sex and the City and Modern Family. Her writing is prescient without being proscriptive, earnest without being cloying, and she can make me laugh and cry sometimes in the same paragraph. In our interview, Chupack spoke about her most recent book THE LONGEST DATE: LIFE AS A WIFE, which delves into the arbitrary yet real challenges of giving birth, parenthood, and marrying a cool drink of water. (Now you'll know why I turned down Ryan Gosling). A consummate writer, Chupack adapted the book for television and director Jake Kasdan is already shooting the pilot for FOX. If...
