It's Christmastime pretty baby once again, and It Happened One Year is all over it like tinsel on the holiday goose! The highest grossing domestic film of the year was Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, so naturally Sarah & Joe needed to weigh in on this semi-classic of the millennium year, with details on all the Jim Carrey antics and development of a live-action Seuss picture and the return of show favorite Taylor Momsen! And mere weeks later, over on VH1, the timely Dickens adaptation A Diva's Christmas Carol starring Vanessa Williams as Ebony Scrooge and Chilli from TLC as...Marley hit the airwaves. [School of Movies 2025] Jim Carrey plays Ebeneezer Scrooge in this unsettling adaptation (sometimes intentionally so, sometimes not). Here, we get to talk about what was possible in this performance capture version that has been done nowhere else, making it strange and special and awkward and precious. Continuing our season of going back to the start, we resurrected the Robert Zemekis incarnation of the perennial yuletide Dickens classic (which we covered back in December 2011 in conjunction with Muppet Christmas Carol... the froggy one we subsequently revisited in 2022). This is also part of an ongoing series analysing the five very uneven performance capture animation films of Image Movers Digital, starting with The Polar Express in 2004, graduating to Monster House in 2006 and closing out with the death-rattle of Mars Needs Moms in 2011. All three of those will be featured on our After School Club over the next few weeks. The remaining oddball adaptation of Beowulf from 2007 is our personal favourite of the quintet and we will finally be talking about it next year. This sub-series is also a part of the overall Zemekis Season we are conducting. Coming next year we will also showcase Forest Gump, Here, The Witches and the riotous Death Becomes Her. Also for Carrey fans, we have his second-finest dramatic performance, The Truman Show, coming very soon (the first-finest being this).

Comedian and actor Marlon Wayans reflects on his incredible comedy education at In Living Color, where he learned from legends like Tommy Davidson, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, and Keenan Ivory Wayans. Wayans credits Tommy Davidson with teaching him that there are no small parts, only small actors, emphasizing Davidson's commitment to physicality and energy in every scene. He describes the experience as "comedy college" where watching these performers in their prime shaped him into the comedian he is today, leading to his belief that consistent hard work on the road performing stand-up is essential for longevity in the industry. The conversation explores Wayans' transition to screenwriting, beginning with his childhood inspiration from reading his brother Keenan's script for I'm Gonna Get You Sucka at age nine. He discusses co-creating comedy hits like Scary Movie, White Chicks, and Little Man before launching his semi-autobiographical NBC sitcom Marlon. Drawing from his real-life co-parenting experience, the show depicts a divorced couple who remain friends, vacation together, and prioritize their children's wellbeing—demonstrating that broken hearts and egos don't have to mean broken families. Wayans proudly announces that season two is even funnier than the first, attributing the success to working with a cast of longtime friends who keep each other laughing.

In the year 2000, the estate of children's author Theodor Geisel, better known by his pen name Dr. Seuss, sold the live-action movie rights to one of the writer's most beloved works. Decades earlier, an animated television special brought to life, via the voice of Boris Karloff and the talents of Chuck Jones, the cranky green curmudgeon known simply as The Grinch. With a plot to steal Christmas from the irrepressibly cheerful Whos of Whoville, the Grinch and his dog Max discover the true meaning of the holiday in this perennial holiday viewing favorite. After a rocky production, director Ron Howard reimagined the cartoon in living color with Jim Carrey donning yellow contact lenses and a dyed-green yak fur suit as The Grinch. The movie, despite mixed reviews, was box office gold, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and taking home an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It manages to be incredibly funny, genuinely odd and well written, but as the story progresses what you realise it's a story about the killing of an entire Jewish population in Ukraine by the Nazis towards the end of the second world war. Leap Of Faith analysis [35:55] Clive Frayne shares how Leap Of Faith, again, is a film hardly anyone seems to know about. It includes the most polished, mature performance Steve Martin has ever given in a movie. Drawing parallels with Jim Carrey elevation as an actor following THE TRUMAN SHOW, Leap Of Faith is Steve Martin's Truman Show. The Tango Lesson Influence   [42:30] Clive Frayne talks about Sally Potter's The Tango Lesson. It's a very meta film because learning to tango is the side project of Sally Potter uses to distract herself from the writer's block that is stopping her getting her film project away. Despite looking, at times, almost like student film levels of production, when she gets the dance sequences right, she has these moments of brilliance.  Key Take Aways:   Discover how movies that changed your life shape personal and professional growth. We're halfway through the month and only 10 days away from Christmas, so it was time to start featuring red, white and green movies on Have You Ever Seen. And for the 701st episode, I'm prattling on about Jim Carrey playing  The Grinch. And does he! The rubber-faced Canadian was about as perfect as anybody could have been playing Dr. Seuss' iconic mean one...and he also brought dozens of over-the-top ad libs and wisecracks to the dance. His schtick doesn't always land though and more than a few things in this film just don't make sense in a kids' picture. Also, Chuck Jones' 1966 animated TV special is classic partly for how sweet it is, including the Whos...who are such jerks here. Ron Howard's impersonal (and inferior) take on the big, green grump & his neighbours is just garish, loud and only occasionally funny. Yet this is one of the great change-of-heart stories ever, so there ARE things to like. So load up with a heaping helping of Who Hash and some roast beast as I talk about How The Grinch Stole Christmas. To let me know that you didn't love the audio distortion in this episode, write me an email to complain: haveyoueverseenpodcast@gmail.com. I'm working on improving that. Stay tuned. You can also tweet me (@moviefiend51 on Twi-X) or Sky me (ryan-ellis on Bluesky). Subscribe to Have You Ever Seen, especially since extra content is soon coming your way on days other than just Mondays. The show will just pop up in your feed. Rate the show, write a review, tell your friends. I also jot down thoughts about movies old AND new on Letterboxd. I'm "RyanHYES" on that venture.

In time for the holidays, Rivka and Frank cover the 2000 Jim Carrey adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The duo dig into whether this Dr. Seuss classic is truly an anti-consumerist tale—or if it ultimately misses the mark. They also unpack Whoville as a surprisingly prophetic preview of our current plastic-surgery obsession and the class aesthetics baked into its cheerfully creepy smiles.   For next week's movie, we'll be watching another Christmas classic, Tim Allen's 1994 The Santa Clause.

MUSICRoger Daltrey of The Who is now SIR Roger Daltrey. He was knighted by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. It's in recognition of not only his musical achievements, but also his charity work. Here he is on the award, and what his younger self and band would've thought back in the day. https://consequence.net/2025/12/sir-roger-daltrey-knighted/ Sharon Osbourne has given her first interview since the death of her husband Ozzy this past July.Appearing Wednesday on the British TV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, hosted by her longtime friend, she opened up about his health struggles, doing his final show this past July 5th in Birmingham, England, their last conversations and much more. You can watch the show on YouTube, and here are a few excerpts:Sharon Osbourne on the last two weeks of Ozzy's life. OC:...in seven years. :27 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was so happy Piers afterwards. And he kept looking at the papers and he goes to me, 'I never knew so many people like me.' But that was the way he was. I mean, he knew he was famous, but not to the amount that people loved him. It's a whole different thing. And he was just so happy. Happier than we'd seen him in seven years."Sharon Osbourne on dreams Ozzy was having the last week of his life. OC:...he was ready. :26 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was having dreams the last week of his life. He was seeing people that he never knew. I said, 'Well, what kind of people?' He goes, 'All different people. And I just keep walking and walking and I'm seeing all these different people every night. And I go back there and I'm looking at these people and they're looking at me and nobody's talking.' And he he knew. He was ready." Sharon also talked about the first time she and Ozzy met, when they fell in love, how she will never want to get married again, how if she didn't have kids she would have killed herself when he died, and the thing she misses most is holding his hand.On a lighter note, she also talked about how she wanted to get back at Roger Waters for the negative things he said about Ozzy after he died. And that was by sending him a Tiffany box filled with feces, which she used to do to critics who wrote negative reviews about Ozzy's shows without being there. When she did, it was her infant son Jack's poop that would be used. She ultimately decided against it, saying, “Even that is a waste, to send [crap] to him. It's a waste because he's really insignificant. But I just thought, anybody that passes has a family… you don't do that.” (Sharon's not the first musician's wife to do that. Paul and Linda McCartney sent some of their daughter Stella's poop to a journalist who earned their trust, then betrayed them.)Going forward, Sharon says she's continuing to work on an Ozzy bio-pic and that she knows who she wants to play him. All the "Potter" flicks . . . with the possible exception of the last one . . . have some kind of yuletide vibe . . . or at least a wintry one.2. "Batman Returns" (1992). One of the big set pieces is the lighting of the Gotham Christmas tree.3. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). Even though it was released in July, it takes place over Christmas.4. "Gremlins" (1984). This one has Christmas written all over it. And also little green, murderous demons.5. "First Blood" (1982). The first of the "Rambo" films has a Christmas tree in the background of one scene. So . . . Christmas movie!!!6. "Trading Places" (1983). There's a Christmas party, and Dan Aykroyd as a drunken Santa waving a handgun. But it doesn't end on December 25th. If it's a Christmas movie, then it also qualifies as a New Year's movie.7. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005). This one takes place during the Christmas season in L.A. And it was released in November.8. "Edward Scissorhands" (1990). Kind of a no-brainer.9. "Lethal Weapon" (1987). Another one of those action movies that HAPPENS to take place around Christmas.10. "Rocky" (1976). This might be the greatest American holiday film of all time, because it includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. And also punching.11. "Hook" (1991). The scenes in the real world, outside Neverland, are set at Christmas. 12. "Iron Man 3" (2013). The whole movie plays out around Christmas.13. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993). What if the fastest way to grow your business isn't marketing harder, but speaking smarter? In this episode, Dr. Danny Brassell shares how to make storytelling and public speaking your most powerful tools for attracting clients, building authority, and confidently closing deals.  Known as the "Jim Carrey with a Ph.D.," Danny has spoken to over 3,500 audiences worldwide and co-founded The WellCrafted Story Workshop™, where he teaches entrepreneurs how to transform their stories into client-generating presentations. The Power Of Clarity And Connection If you've ever struggled to explain what you do–or why it matters–Danny says you're not alone. In fact, 95% of speakers can't answer two simple questions: Who is your audience? And what problem do you solve for them?  His Five C's framework shows you how to fix that.  As Danny puts it, "Choices confuse and cause you to lose." When you focus your message on one problem and one solution, you'll instantly become more memorable–and more effective. Turning Stories Into Sales If you want to grow your business faster, start telling better stories.  Danny explains that authentic storytelling—especially around your failures—is what builds connection and trust with your audience.
