On January 16th, as snow crept into the Chicago area, temperatures dropped from a high of 37 degrees, and slipped below freezing. They haven't crept above, since. On today's Block Club Chicago podcast, WGN-TV meteorologist Bill Snyder says it's not your imagination — it's been a cold winter, even by Chicago standards. But there is light at the end of tunnel, and warmth, by the end of the week. Host - Jon HansenGuest - Bill Snyder Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Listen Online: About this episode: What if one of the biggest reasons we age faster, feel weaker, and lose resilience has nothing to do with hormones or calories — but with minerals? In this rare and deeply personal interview, Ann Louise Gittleman sits down with James Templeton, founder of UNI KEY Health and one of the longest-living Stage 4 melanoma survivors in the world, to reveal why minerals may be the missing link to cellular strength, energy, and longevity. James shares why, after decades of studying nutrition and formulating supplements, he became convinced that minerals are more important than almost anything else we put into our bodies. He explains why modern soil depletion has left most people unknowingly deficient, how mineral loss weakens our cells like a drained battery, and why he went on a global search for the purest mineral source on Earth — ultimately leading to the creation of Mineral-Key, a liquid blend of more than 72 ancient trace minerals from a prehistoric mineral bed millions of years old. Along the way, James opens up about his own cancer journey, what he's learned from interviewing top cancer experts and survivors through the Templeton Wellness Foundation, and the rare trace minerals most people have never heard of — yet desperately need. If you've ever wondered how to help your body stay younger, stronger, and more resilient at the cellular level, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. You can find Mineral-Key at https://unikeyhealth.com/products/mineral-keyThe post A Rare Conversation with One of the Longest-Living Stage 4 Cancer Survivors — And the Mineral Secret That Changed Everything first appeared on Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS.

When a German U-boat torpedoes the SS Ben Lomond in 1942, Poon Lim becomes the ship's sole survivor. Adrift with minimal supplies, he battles dehydration, starvation, and despair. Using nothing but his wits and will to live, he catches fish with makeshift hooks, snares seabirds, collects rainwater, and even kills a shark with his bare hands. Its a world record.

Documentary on One - RTÉ Documentaries

In 1986, a Limerick man called Terry Madigan came up with a plan to raise money for his local GAA club and community that everyone thought was crazy. Terry wanted to create a world record for the longest game of GAA football ever to be played. It would be 60 hours of football - non-stop on a full-sized pitch over a whole weekend. If this was going to work, it would need 14 brave men and the whole parish of Kilcornan to get involved. This is the story of that record attempt - the highs; the lows; the hallucinations - all set against the backdrop of a community of people bonded by the love of their parish and GAA. In 1969, a cartoon about a traditional Japanese family premiered on Fuji TV.More than 55 years later, Sazae-san still airs in its original time slot. It is set in a more patriarchal time when women stay at home and do the housework, and men go to work and like getting drunk.Sunishi Yukimuro was one of the first writers. He tells Vicky Farncombe how young viewers watch it as a period drama and enjoy the closeness of the family.“They get most envious when they watch the scenes where everybody gets together to have a meal,” he says. “We don't have such scenes in current families. People eat separately these days.”Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher.
