Diese Woche darf „Pumped Up Kicks“ von Foster The People nicht fehlen. Der Song ist seit 2011 weltbekannt und läuft auf jeder Indie Party. Die Kieler Band Leoniden ist für ihren ekstatischen Indie-Pop bekannt, der ihnen große Hallen füllt und tausende Menschen vor ihre Festivalbühnen zieht. Die meisten ihrer Songs klingen nach guter Laune, aber eigentlich haben sie noch nie einen fröhlichen Song geschrieben. Phil Roy has written songs for some of the greats, including Ray Charles, Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker, and Mavis Staples, and songs for two Academy Award-winning films: Leaving Las Vegas and As Good As It Gets. He co-wrote one of his songs, Melt, with his long-time friend, Nicolas Cage. Phil was born and raised in Philadelphia, and attended Berklee College of Music as a guitar major. It was around then he first took an interest in songwriting. He moved to LA in 1981 and almost immediately got signed to Warner Brothers records with his band Carrera. In 1987 he became a staff songwriter. In 2000 he self-released his album Grouchyfriendly - it won “Independent Album of the Year” from Musician's Atlas Magazine. He has since released three more solo albums: Issues + Options in 2003, The Great Longing in 2005, and In The Weird Small Hours in 2009, which won a “Concept Album of the Year” by the Independent Music Awards.
It's summer, the sun is blazing, and we only have one thing on our minds - the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the high-octane, expertly paced thriller The Fugitive, originally released August 6, 1993 starring Harrison Ford. Oh, and Medicare for All. We're always thinking about Medicare for All. Now that we mention it, isn't it funny how if we had a single-payer healthcare system, The Fugitive wouldn't exist? In a single-payer system, there would have been no nefarious pharmaceutical executive to frame Harrison Ford for murder in order to cover up the side effects of Provasic. There would have been no need for Walter White to cook meth in order to pay for his cancer treatment. In fact, a lot of our favorite movies and TV shows would be entirely without conflict. In this episode, we take a look at a uniquely American subgenre: movies where our healthcare system is the villain! Plus, we dip into the Healthcare-NOW mailbag to hear from our listeners about your favorite movies where for-profit healthcare is the bad guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKat9vjm7tI SPOILER ALERT. Some of these movies are masterpieces, and we'll be discussing spoilers. Seriously, we advise that you pause the podcast and watch Dog Day Afternoon now. Let's discuss the uniquely American film genre that depicts the healthcare industry as the villain. One of the biggest healthcare villain blockbusters was, of course, The Fugitive (1993). Our hero Dr. Richard Kimball is falsely accused of murdering his wife. He escapes police custody and along the way uncovers the truth, that he was framed by an evil pharmaceutical executive who killed Mrs. Kimball to cover up the side effects of a profitable new drug. Fun fact: Tommy Lee Jones was the former college roommate of Vice President Al Gore. The term “healthcare industry” dates back to the 1970s, and so does the reality of for-profit healthcare. Major transformations of our healthcare system have created real-life nightmares and impossible situations for patients, and that growing widespread experience of a healthcare dystopia then creates an audience for Hollywood script writers to build drama around healthcare situations. Two of the films submitted by our members come from the very beginning of the “healthcare industry,” in the early 1970s: The Hospital (1971) stars George C. Scott and Diana Rigg. A serial killer targets doctors by making them patients in their own hospital, where they die due to hospital negligence. CW: weird sexual politics. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) starring Al Pacino and John Cazale, dramatizes a true story of two Brooklyn bank robbers, motivated to steal to pay for gender reassignment surgery for Pacino's character's partner. In 2015, real life dad Bryan Randolph of Detroit robbed a bank to pay for his 1-year-old daughter's cancer treatment after his health insurance canceled her plan. The next explosion of healthcare plots comes in the 1990s and early 2000s, when “managed care” plans and HMOs spread like wildfire, replacing traditional insurance. Intended to bring down rising healthcare costs, managed care brought us such classics as prior authorization, widespread claim denials and limited networks. This kicked off a new wave of films in the 1990s that start using health insurance villains become key plot points. The failed Clinton health reform efforts also happened in 1994, which created probably a sense of hopelessness around Congress fixing these problems. As Good As It Gets (1997): This cringefest features Jack Nicholson as a cranky, bigoted and obsessive compulsive writer. Nicholson's character can only eat at one restaurant, where he meets waitress Helen Hunt, and pays for her child's cancer treatment so she can continue to work and serve him. All kinds of toxicity, sexism, and structural inequities on display in this one. Patch Adams (1998): features Robin Williams in a real life story about a doctor whose unorthodox ways bump up agai...

And then they get chatting about making movies, about the 1994 box office disappointment I'll Do Anything, a brief drive by As Good As It Gets, and a few hints as to the film he's workong on next. On today's episode, we're heading over to St. Bernard's Academy for homeroom, cast some spells to get our deepest wishes, and we're also going to invoke the spirit, while we revisit the 90s teen horror flick, The Craft (1996). This movie was directed by Andrew Fleming, and was co-written by Peter Filardi and Andrew Fleming. This movie stars Robin Tunney (Empire Records, Prison Break), Fairuza Balk (The Worst Witch, Return to Oz), Neve Campbell (Scream, Wild Things), and Rachel True (Nowhere, Embrace of the Vampire). Also included in the cast are Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale, As Good As It Gets), Breckin Meyer (Clueless, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare), and Cliff DeYoung (Dr. Giggles, Shock Treatment). This movie has its highs and lows, for sure. If anything, it's an example of a horror movie that explores the idea and world of witchcraft, and is an example of a decent mid-90s horror flick. This movie is also an absolute sleepover movie (especially for young women and probably queer folks), so it has a certain place in the hearts of the fans that grew up with it. It's worth a watch if you've never seen it, and for a horror fan, definitely should be on the list to watch, as well.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. The study of classic and contemporary films can provide a powerful avenue to understand the experience of mental illness. In Madness at the Movies: Understanding Mental Illness through Film (Johns Hopkins UP, 2023), James Charney, MD, a practicing psychiatrist and long-time cinephile, examines films that delve deeply into characters' inner worlds, and he analyzes moments that help define their particular mental illness. Based on the highly popular course that Charney taught at Yale University and the American University of Rome, Madness at the Movies introduces readers to films that may be new to them and encourages them to view these films in an entirely new way. Through films such as Psycho, Taxi Driver, Through a Glass Darkly, Night of the Hunter, A Woman Under the Influence, Ordinary People, and As Good As It Gets, Charney covers an array of disorders, including psychosis, paranoia, psychopathy, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety. He examines how these films work to convey the essence of each illness. He also looks at how each film reflects the understanding of mental illness at the time it was released as well as the culture that shaped that understanding. Charney explains how to observe the behaviors displayed by characters in the films, paying close attention to signs of mental illness. He demonstrates that learning to read a film can be as absorbing as watching one. By viewing these films through the lens of mental health, readers can hone their observational skills and learn to assess the accuracy of depictions of mental illness in popular media. Melek Firat Altay is a neuroscientist, biologist and musician. Her research focuses on deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. Justice for Melissa! This week we're giving some much overdue love to Jami Gertz's award-winning performance as Bill Paxton's woefully neglected fiancé in peril in 1996's “Twister.” But first, we have a lot of feelings about Helen Hunt, especially her Oscar winning accent in “As Good As It Gets.” Plus: Best Supporting Aunt Meg with those obscene plates of steak and eggs, Tàr director Todd Field, Philip Seymour Hoffman at his crunchiest, a Shelley Duvall cameo, apparently Anthony Rapp and so many Dodge Caravans. March is still going to the dogs and in this week's movie we have the most exceptional doggy star! We are covering As Good As It Gets which stars Jack Nicholson as Melvin and unpleasant, obsessive, curmudgeon who insists on making everyone's life miserable except for Carol, played by Helen Hunt, his crush who also happens to wait tables at the diner he frequents. Also thrown into the mix are a gay neighbor, a 'take no shit' art dealer and a cute dog named Verdell, played by Jill the Dog. In this episode: we explore how we feel about forehead licks (based on our stance around forehead kisses, not good), Corinne explains the multiple uses you can get from the Indigo Girls music catalogue (aka lady bait), and Tamara undercharges for her services as a freelance detective. We wouldn't trade this episode for all the noodle salad in the world but we will ask is this As Good As It Gets? Yes, yes it is.
This was one of the more unusual podcasts in memory - mainly because it was on my birthday, and I had the profound experience of being with my friend Luana Anders on my birthday. Here, Luana left the planet in 1996, and being able to ask her questions and get answers, as well as ask her to give her Oscar's speech - is mind bending. Jennifer and I have been doing this for 8 years. Luana has appeared to members of my family (when they'd never met her, but could identify her) as well as other friends. She was in over 300 TV shows and films, and was mentioned by Jack Nicholson in his speech for "As Good As It Gets." Luana moderates our podcast from the flipside. But before I get to her speech, Princess Diana showed up to talk about the event when she is mentioned in Prince Harry's book SPARE. How she not only orchestrated that event, but orchestrated Jennifer being in a restaurant with some friends, was in the midst of talking about Harry's report about her showing up via a medium (in his book "Spare") and then while talking about Diana, Harry and Meghan showed up in the restaurant. She had a profound message for both her boys, to paraphrase, it's to "focus on love." To have unconditional love for each other, as well as their father - and moreover to be aware that everyone is going through troubles and difficulties, but if one can love themselves, then they can love others unconditionally - it's as profound a concept and statement about love as I've ever recorded. Then Jennifer correctly predicts that "Everything Everywhere" would win many awards (that was widely predicted, but Jennifer hadn't seen it) just as last week's podcast when I asked Carl Laemmle (who purchased the rights to the original "All Quiet on the Western Front" when head of the company he founded Universal pictures) how many awards would they win? Or if the screenwriter who saw a vision she would win an Oscar for the film was correct - Carl said she was, and indeed, she did. He said it would win three, it actually won four. It's not that Jennifer was right or wrong, as the question was asked to Carl. The future doesn't exist, there are likely outcomes, just pointing out that even Carl on the flipside, who said it would win three, was off by one. It happens. Again - we're demonstrating how simple it is to speak to loved ones on the flipside. So in light of asking my pal Luana what she might have said had she won an Oscar, she said: "I would like to say to all of those viewers out there... how much I love what I do. I loved what I did there, I love what I do here... I love the intersections, the intercrossings.. all the directors, the actors, the people that feed them... how it takes everything, every unique talent and every situation -- that connects us all. If everybody knew that this was a play; that you are here in front of me and you are one of the actors in my play and I'm one of the actors in your play, wouldn't we get along better if we knew we had to be clothed and fed and taking care of each other? And maybe "The Union" was God? Or whatever (term) to keep things going? It could be that simple. We make it so difficult to care for one another. Why can't we just care for everyone? I just want everyone to know that we are all in this together and I'm grateful for everyone who is listening, from afar to here. To those that don't know us yet, to those that will never know us - when you bring up your abilities to wake up, to be connected, to know you are connected... Then anything else can be a little bit easier. Just be who you are and know you have an important part in everybody's play." Luana was a lifelong Buddhist, a member of SGI here in Los Angeles, along with her pals Herbie Hancock, Tina Turner, the late Wayne Shorter - and I know Jennifer well enough to know that she would not have given her Oscar speech in this fashion, but I know for a fact that it is in line with everything that Luana believed in when she was on the planet, and chanted for on a daily basis. Our loved ones are with us. Try to not forget that. But also try to remember, we are all actors in each other's plays - try to love without conditions.

Another one of those mind bending sessions. In this case, our moderator on the flipside, Luana Anders - LuanaAnders.com showed up with her cat Mr. Bailey. I asked Mr. Bailey the same questions that I ask people that show up - who greeted him on the flipside, what his experience was or is. We started off talking about process, how coincidence is made from those on the flipside, as Luana had shown up today in a article about Jack Nicholson and how he had dedicated his Oscar to her and other friends for "As Good As It Gets." Mind you - that was in 1996. Charles Grodin showed up at first to remind Jennifer that he had helped her the night before with her "Wine and Spirits" event. He said hello and then Luana stepped forward holding her cat. Everything reported in the session is accurate - wife Sherry finding the cat in a tree, and then returning the cat to Luana. We've had numerous conversations with animals on the flipside, and everything Mr. Bailey reported is in line with the other reports. I guess it's important to hear - our pets are not gone either, they're just not here. Available just like everyone is on the flipside. Enjoy.
