While we're off on vacation this week, we decided to do something a little different for this week's show.If you checked out last month's Weather Report, you probably heard that Andrea recently had the opportunity to participate in a multimedia installation at LA's National Museum of the Aftermath called “California Gothic” that dives into the question of what Los Angeles, and the lives of those who live there, will look like after collapse.The project is the brainchild of Gina Delvac and James Kim, two of the most creative minds working in audio storytelling today. For “California Gothic,” they commissioned audio creators, journalists, writers, and artists (Andrea included) to imagine a future where their favorite place in Los Angeles no longer exists, and then to create a speculative audio story about it — short prose, an intimate fiction scene, an ambient piece, or something surreal that doesn't fall into any of those. They ask: What memories reverberate from this place? What memories can still be heard? What have we lost?While “California Gothic” was (at the time anyway) a one-off event, we were so moved by the vision and creativity of these experimental pieces – which range from sound collages, to surrealist scifi, to letters from future selves – that we thought it would make for a sweet summer treat to feature them here on CUJO.Today's episode features six of those pieces, each imagining a different place in Los Angeles as remembered in a post-apocalyptic future. Along with Emily Pugh, Gilbert and Perchuk are the project leads for "Ed Ruscha's Streets of Los Angeles," a Getty Research Institute project that has, among other things, digitized Ed Ruscha's five-decade-long photographic project to document the streets of Los Angeles. The GRI project also considers Ruscha's Streets of Los Angeles archive within a range of historical frameworks, spotlights what it tells us about modern and contemporary art, architecture, and the physical, social, and cultural geographies of Los Angeles. On the second segment, we discuss the dispersal of artist Steve Roden's estate with curator Meg Linton, who has advised the estate, University of Maryland Art Gallery director Taras Matla, and Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College associate director Steve Comba. Roden was a Los Angeles-area-based artist who worked in sound, sculpture, painting, and other media, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 59. The Roden estate has recently dispersed works to museums all over the United States, including those represented on this week's program, as well as to the Grunwald Center at the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art, Ruby City, San Antonio, and more. For more than 60 years, the Sunset Marquis has been far more than just a hotel. Hidden behind its unassuming gates just off the Sunset Strip, it became a sanctuary for some of the biggest names in music—a place where artists could escape the spotlight, create, recover, celebrate, and occasionally indulge in a little rock 'n' roll debauchery. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Amanda sits down with Craig Williams and Tyler Measom, the directors of the new documentary If These Walls Could Rock, opening in theaters and on streaming August 14. Craig's connection to the story began more than a decade ago when he co-authored If These Walls Could Rock with hotel owner Mark Rosenthal. Together with Tyler, he has now brought the extraordinary history of the Sunset Marquis to the screen. Michael KostroffTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Michael Kostroff. Michael has been a working actor for several decades and is well known for several roles. In this episode, we chat about some of those roles, some of those shows, and he shares experiences from them. Then we jump into Michael's role as the mayor of New York and working with Nicolas Cage on 'Spider Noir'. Of course, I ask him about fulfilling his life-long dream of performing on Broadway, and what it is like being part of 'Dog Day Afternoon'. Then we discuss his various books. Michael Kostroff has written 4 books so far, and we get into a couple of them. Michael teaches a workshop that helps actors get out of their own heads when doing auditions, it's called 'Audition Psych 101'. In 1959, Sharpe starred as Laura Thomas in the CBS western television series Johnny Ringo, starring along with Don Durant, Mark Goddard and Terence De Marney. After the series ended in 1960, she guest-starred in numerous television programs, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Death Valley Days, Perry Mason, The Wild Wild West, The Texan, Rawhide, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Trackdown, Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, 77 Sunset Strip, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Millionaire and I Dream of Jeannie. She also appeared in films such as Man with the Gun (as Stella Atkins), Mexican Manhunt (as Linda Morgan), Valley of Mystery,Tarawa Beachhead, The High and the Mighty and The Disorderly Orderly. Sharpe retired from acting in 2021, last appearing in the film Fate's Shadow: The Whole Story. KAT KRAMER: Katharine “Kat” Kramer is a former Miss Golden Globe Ambassador. Kat is the Founder of “Kat Kramer's Films That Change The World”, an international cinema series to showcase motion pictures and documentaries that raise awareness of important social issues. Kat is the daughter of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kramer, actress/producer Karen Sharpe-Kramer, and the Godchild/namesake of screen icon Katharine Hepburn. She has starred in four one woman shows, and debut her solo show “My Duet With Mick” for Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival. She is currently developing a new solo show titled “She's A Rainbow.” Kat has won awards for her roles on stage as Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker” and Anne Frank in “The Diary of Anne Frank.” She starred as Estella in “Great Expectations,” “Joan of Arc” in “The Lark,” and she appeared in the ensemble of “The Vagina Monologues.” Ms. Kramer served on the dais and opened the program for the Pioneer Luncheon honoring her performing idol Lily Tomlin. She received a standing ovation with a special salute musical parody called “Dear Lily Tomlin.” An animal rights advocate, Ms. Kramer re-imagined the theme song from “Bless The Beasts And Children” as an anthem for animal rescue and wildlife protection organizations. She was honored with the Compassion Award from the Braveheart Women. It's almost unfathomable to know that the New York Times would site our podcast when talking about the life and career of Mara Corday. Thanks to Valerie for being so open and honest about everything and for being on the podcast to tell her story. Cinderella came out of the gritty streets of Philadelphia by writing hookey riffs, shout along choruses and a fun, glammy stage show. Gene Simmons tried to get them signed but it was Jon Bon Jovi who would convince his label Mercury to get them a record contract. Led by lead singer/songwriter/lead guitarist Tom Keifer, Cinderella had hard riffs and a Sunset Strip performance style that made them perfect for MTV in the mid- to late-80s. Their debut album Night Songs landed in June of 1986 and laid the foundation for more platinum albums and MTV airplay. Keifer's raspy voice can lead big sing-a-long rockers like Shake Me or Somebody Save Me or can sing a lament like Nobody's Fool. His friend Eric Brittingham provides the steady bass and Jeff LaBar lays textures against Keifer's hard riffs and trades a few licks. On the record, drums were provided by veteran studio musician Jody Cortez, though Fred Coury was brought in just in time to make the album cover (don't get Jackson started) and joined the band. Yes, their lyrics are mostly banal and cliched sexual conquests but they were of a time and Cinderella may have done that sleazy 80s rock made famous by Motley Crue and Guns N Roses as well as anyone. Once grunge came, all that was glam or "hair metal" had to go but maybe Cinderella should have been given the opportunity to reinvent themselves like Def Leppard. We think they were unnecessary casualties of grunge and while Night Songs may not be skip-free, it's a solid hard rocking 80s album with some great riffs and fist pumping choruses. The Source Familywas a high-profile spiritual commune and cult founded in Hollywood in the early 1970s by James Edward Baker, better known as Father Yod. The group is famous for its early adoption of organic health foods, its psychedelic rock band, and its eventual tragic relocation to Hawaii. Key Aspects of The Source FamilyThe Leader: Father Yod was a former WWII hero, Hollywood restaurateur, and stuntman who reinvented himself as a guru. He lived in a mansion with 14 wives and drove a Rolls Royce, claiming he was a "spiritual father" to his 140 followers.The Source Restaurant: The group operated a popular vegetarian restaurant on the Sunset Strip that became a celebrity hotspot for figures like John Lennon and Warren Beatty. It is famously parodied in Woody Allen's Annie Hall.Music: The Family formed an experimental psychedelic rock band called Ya Ho Wha 13. They recorded nine albums between 1973 and 1975, which are now considered cult classics in the psych-rock genre.Beliefs & Lifestyle: Members practiced communal living, yoga, and meditation based on a blend of Western esotericism and the Age of Aquarius. They all adopted the last name "Aquarian".The End: Following pressure from local authorities, the group moved to Hawaii in 1974. In 1975, Father Yod died following a hang-gliding accident on Oahu. Bradley Whitford, a classically trained stage actor, gained fame as “Josh Lyman,” on NBC's 'The West Wing,' which earned him his first Emmy award in 2001. He went on to win Emmys in 2015 and 2019 for his work in 'Transparent' and 'The Handmaid's Tale' and is grateful to have had the opportunity last year to direct the show's fifth season penultimate episode, “Allegiance.” He is currently filming “The Diplomat” alongside his West Wing co- star, Allison Janney. Whitford appeared in AMC's limited series 'Parish' alongside Giancarlo Esposito, a drama about a taxi driver whose life is upended after picking up a Zimbabwean gangster. He also starred in the independent film 'I'll Be Right' There with Edie Falco and completed work on Netflix's limited series 'The Madness,' opposite Colman Domingo.
