While this installment attempts to capture the magic of its predecessors, it often feels like a shadow of what once was. We'll explore the film's self-referential humor, uneven pacing, and the challenges of continuing a beloved franchise. With a mix of nostalgia and critique, we'll discuss how "Scream 3" fits into Craven's legacy and whether it manages to deliver the thrills fans expect.

Dr. Dennis Alan travels to Haiti to research a drug that appears to be "zombifying" locals. The Serpent and the Rainbow is the last movie of Wes Craven May and a movie we love to rewatch. Flying under the radar of some of Craven's other movies, this film stars Bill Pullman as a convincing anthropologist working to uncover strange occurrences in Haiti regarding a drug that is pausing vital signs. This film explores the "stranger in a strange land" concept very well, adding in cultural elements, Voodoo practices, as well as touching on the political strife, all playing a role in the film. The film is loosely based on the Wade Davis book "The Serpent and the Rainbow: A Harvard Scientist's Astonishing Journey into the Secret Societies of Haitian Voodoo, Zombies, and Magic". There's no denying Nightmare's place in horror history. It birthed a legend, introduced a terrifying concept, and proved that low-budget horror could be wildly imaginative. But as a film, it's best appreciated with caveats. It's not airtight. It's not consistently scary. But it is audacious, and sometimes that's enough to earn a nightmare or two.

Send us a textBig thanks to our guest Joe Simpson for coming on the pod and saying his journey.Joe says "I've always been active and involved in sport from a young age, thanks to a very supportive family who always tried to give me and my brother the best opportunities to be successful. I grew up in York and swam often when I could doing well in local events at the pool that we swam at.  I've ridden bikes from a young age and can remember seeing videos of me running at small events when my Dad was doing 10K's on the same day. However, the sport of football and later cricket were around and when we left York to where my parents are now still near Malton, I joined local teams and the swimming especially stopped.I did a charity triathlon which was very small and low key around 2008 I think. I enjoyed that, but never really carried on with it after, something I wish I had. We had Dalby Forest on our doorstep and could mountain bike there loads. Still did the occasional low key run event, Bramham Park was a particular favourite. Moving forwards a few years to 2017, I was at uni in Leeds and the sport of triathlon was starting to become a bit more of a thing. I remember watching the World series in Leeds the year before and my Dad saying 'why are we not there'. I was at Leeds Beckett and had seen plenty of the GB team around so I looked into the 2017 race and entered the go tri and haven't looked back since. I got hooked and did other local races around the North Yorkshire area and minus the covid year, always did the Leeds weekend with my mum and dad, it's such a shame that it got moved from there.  I enjoyed seeing my times improving, parkrun also has helped so much with this.  Two events at Leeds really made me think hmm I like this were in 2019 and 2022.  I won my age group in the 2019 race and was 4th in the Yorkshire champs in 2022. In 2019 I first heard the words 'GB age group' and can remember over taking plenty of GB suits along the way. I had a few personal challenges that year and really doubted my self in my work life and relationship life so this race was a good distraction. The 2022 event I was now involved with Craven energy (CE) tri club in Skipton where I am still now and having a great time. I would have been Yorkshire champion that year or at least top 3, but my bike seat fell off and that lost me the 10 minutes I finished behind the winner with. That year the head coach at CE really spoke loads to me about age group racing. I did a few qualifiers in triathlon but never got anywhere. I was going to try again in 2023 at Leeds but then it was taken to Sunderland, I didn't go.  I tried duathlon, as by then my run for 5K had come down from 26.30- sub 19, it's now 17:55 and I'm aiming to break 17:30 by the end of the year. I went to Darley Moor in 2023 and qualified on a roll down slot for Portugal 2024. That was my proudest sporting moment and along with graduation, proudest life moment. My parents and girlfriend made it into a nice trip and I certainly enjoyed the experience. I've never come from a rich family, I've just got parents who have worked hard but not just given me and my brother things without us working for them, especially now. The cost of GB racing is a lot so I make sure I work around it all well with my work as an outdoor instructor. I'm around great people and really am looking forward to the euros next year in 2026 wherever they may be, just need the final conformation  now. My main goal in this sport is to try take it as far as I can. I'm enjoying the process very much and seeing my running times now down where they are shows me that my hard work is working."Good luck to Joe in the future you can follow his journey on Instagram @joed_simpsonYou Can Follow us  onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook :

In this soulful and engaging episode, the Archetypal Tarot Podcast welcomes guest Kaity Craven about her “Moonflower Moments” practice with card readings. She invites us into the magical world of intuitive card reading — a journey that's equal parts playful, profound, and occasionally butt-kicking (in the best way). With decks at the ready and intuition in the driver's seat, Kaity, a card and nature-rhythm reader, shows how each card becomes a doorway into deeper questions, unexpected answers, and moments of powerful self-discovery. What I love about Kaity's reading style is that it just FLOWS as she trusts her intuition. She is also unafraid to use MULTIPLE card decks, allowing for a diversity of interpretation. Nature's symbolism is frequent in her readings, and I love how she utilizes the Story Through Stone Reflection Card deck! This episode reveals Kaity's reading style IN ACTION while she gives me a live card reading! Budding and experienced card readers will benefit from observing her trust, style and flow — and you'll definitely want to grab your own deck and play along. Kaity shares how the process is less about having all the answers and more about being a big YES to whatever arises — drawing another card, chasing a curiosity, or exploring a feeling until the “well” feels fully drawn. Whether it's joy, mystery, or a spiritual gut-check, the cards are there to meet you where you are and take you further than you expected. Craving more of Kaity? You can watch her frequent and amazing Youtube videos by becoming a subscriber to Moonflower Moments. I highly recommend a reading with Kaity, she can read over Zoom or phone at reasonable rates. Part one of the programme then examines another extraordinary week of sales action that peaked with Amo Racing paying 1,750,000gns for an unraced horse who was sold in December 2023 for 55,000gns. In the second half of the show the panel look at the controversy surrounding an experienced clerk of the course revealing he amends official ground data. Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 42:35

Summary: Howdy, partner! Saddle up today and join Holly and Devin as they explore the Wild West - the region of the United States west of the Mississippi River between the 1830s and the early 1900s. Whether you're looking for love or a spooky thrill, books set in the Wild West are more violent, raw, and connected to the dangers of the wide open plains. Stark and vivid, these stories strip life down to the most basic aspects of human nature and explore what we'll do to survive.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (5:09): Devin discussed Lucky Red by Claudia Cravens, a western sapphic romance following Bridget as she travels through the Kansas prairie with her alcoholic father. After he dies from a rattlesnake bite, Bridget makes it to Dodge City and is soon recruited to work at the Buffalo Queen - the only brothel in town run by women. Bridget takes well to brothel life and forms deep friendships with her fellow “sporting women”. When Spartan Lee, a legendary female gunfighter, comes to town, though, the life she's built is threatened and Bridget must decide who and what she'll fight for. Devin's key takeaways were: This book embodied the chaos and tenuousness of this era of the Western United States. Craven imbues her writing with an anger and sharpness that matches well with the violence of the weather and people trying to survive in what had just recently been wilderness. While most of the book takes place inside the brothel, we get a picture of the society by the men who sit at the bar and spend time with the women.  While this book can definitely be called a romance, there's an undercurrent of danger and discomfort such that it was difficult to relax into and trust. The writing was impeccably done but what propelled the story was less the queer love Bridget feels and explores with women but the found family and platonic love she feels for her peers at the Buffalo Queen.  Craven explores, through Bridget, the dynamic between men in power and women whose only power could be found in whoring. There is a pride implied through the book for these women and the reader gets to see their strength and cunning in action; even in Spartan there is a claiming and staking of power by force. The men, though, claim nothing and by simply being in a room or not being in a room can determine the fates of each woman we come to care about.  The Dagger (18:01): Holly discussed Lone Women by Victor Lavalle, a historical horror book set in 1915 following Adelaide Henry, a young Black woman living in California. Having set her home ablaze with her dead parents inside, Adelaide moves to Montana with only a steamer trunk containing a dangerous secret. Once there, she claims a homestead under the promise that if she can farm the land for three years, it will be hers. Met with a harsh landscape, xenophobia and patriarchal pressures, and the burden of her past, Adelaide befriends other outcast women and hopes the horrifying truth doesn't come out. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel challenges the traditional, whitewashed narrative of the American frontier. Instead of the rugged, heroic white men often depicted in Westerns, Lone Women focuses on the marginalized figures—women, people of color, and outsiders—who also played a crucial role in shaping the West. The novel highlights the loneliness and struggles of female homesteaders, who had to survive in a harsh environment without the privileges that white male settlers had. Despite her initial isolation, Adelaide finds support in unexpected places, demonstrating the importance of chosen family in times of hardship. She bonds with Grace, a struggling single mother, and Bertie, who both offer her friendship and protection. The idea of survival is not just about enduring physical hardship—it's about finding allies and building a life on one's own terms.  The supernatural elements in Lone Women serve as metaphors for historical and societal horrors. The monster in Adelaide's trunk embodies both her own trauma and the fear of what happens when buried secrets come to light. The desolation of the Montana frontier, with its harsh winters and isolation, enhances the eerie atmosphere, making it a place where both natural and supernatural dangers lurk. Hot On the Shelf (32:37): Devin: The Pairing by Casey McQuinston Holly: The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:33): Devin: Superstore show on Peacock Holly: Severance season 2 on AppleTV    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Pro-Life activist assaulted during street interview, China moves to formally ban missionary activity, Democratic Rep. mocks wheelchair-bound governor

It's Monday, April 7th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus China moves to formally ban missionary activity New regulations released this week by the Chinese Communist Party impose severe restrictions on missionary activity in the country, reports International Christian Concern. The regulations, which take effect May 1, prohibit foreigners from preaching, sharing their faith, or establishing religious organizations without official government approval. Justifying these regulations, Chinese state media claimed that the newly revised rules promote national security—a common justification for CCP persecution of religion—and help to protect “normal religious activities,” referring to activities run under strict government oversight as part of state-run religious institutions. The Chinese Communist Party has long viewed independent religious activity with suspicion, arguing that religious loyalty is at odds with the ultimate loyalty demanded by the Communist Party. The government labels independent religious activity as cultish and extremist, regardless of its theological roots, and demands that all Christian religious activity take place within the confines of state-run churches. In Matthew 10:22, Jesus said, “You will be hated by everyone because of Me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Senate confirmed pro-life Asst. Attorney General Last Thursday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Harmeet Dhillon, a prominent pro-life attorney, as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, reports LifeNews. The vote marks a significant shift in the agency's approach to civil rights enforcement under the Trump administration. The vote, which followed party lines with Republicans approving and Democrats voting no, ended with a 52-45 tally, with three senators absent. Dhillon, nominated by President Donald Trump in December 2024, pledged during her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing in February to end what she described as the targeting of pro-life Christians by the Department of Justice. Her appointment replaces Kristen Clarke, a pro-abortion Biden-era official criticized by conservative groups for aggressively prosecuting pro-life activists under the so-called Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Democratic Rep. calls wheelchair-bound Abbott: “Governor Hot Wheels” At a Human Rights Campaign Fund event, a group that advocates for sexual perversion, Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of Texas mocked her own Republican Governor Greg Abbott for his disability, reports KBTX TV. Listen. CROCKETT: “Y'all know we got ‘Governor Hot Wheels' down there. Come on now. And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot mess.” On July 14, 1984, at age 26, Abbott was paralyzed below the waist when an oak tree fell on him while he was jogging after a storm. Since the accident, Abbott has used a wheelchair. Governor Abbott reacted. ABBOTT: “It's another day and another disaster by the Democrats. The reality is they have no vision, no policy. They have nothing to sell but hate.” In a laughable spin, Congresswoman Crocket claimed that “I wasn't thinking about the Governor's condition. I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he uses to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors.” Republican Congressman Randy Weber of Texas has introduced a resolution to censure Crockett. He said, “The story of our great Governor of Texas is one of unwavering resilience and perseverance. Meanwhile, the actions of Jasmine Crockett—stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks—are nothing short of reprehensible.” Pro-Life activist assaulted during street interview And finally, a pro-life activist was violently attacked last Thursday while conducting street interviews in New York City, reports LifeNews.com. Savannah Craven, a YouTuber with the pro-life group Live Action, was punched in the face by Brianna Rivers, an enraged pro-abortion passerby, during an interview near a Planned Parenthood abortion mill in Manhattan, reports the New York Post. According to posts on X, Craven was asking pedestrians, “Do you know what Planned Parenthood does?” when she was brutally attacked. The assailant, described by witnesses as a pro-abortion advocate, reportedly grew agitated during a brief exchange with Craven before delivering the blow. Things took a turn when Savannah asked whether foster kids should be killed because “they're not wanted.” Rivers responded, “Why not?  Who's going to take care of them? I need to know the percentage of people who take children from foster care and abuse them and molest them, who make them personal slaves. I need specifics before you come to talk to me about pro-life.” You can watch the video of the pro-abortion woman, Brianna Rivers, assaulting pro-life advocate Savannah Craven, through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com.   Listen to this brief soundbite from that exchange that led to this assault. RIVERS: “You don't understand the magnitude of having a child.” CRAVEN: “ I'm not the one who admitted they would be okay with killing babies in foster care and killing children that have been abused…” RIVERS: “That's not the point.” (This is when Rivers punched Craven in the face) As Craven and her friends were driving around looking for the woman who had just punched her in the face, she said this. CRAVEN : “She was a stranger on the street, and I asked her if she wanted to do an interview for my YouTube channel. She said, ‘Yeah.'  She was very nice when she walked up. She complimented my dress, and then things escalated very quickly.” Live Action, a prominent pro-life group, condemned the attack, calling it a “direct assault on free expression.” Craven developed a swollen black left eye and received two stitches below her eyebrow at the hospital as well as enduring significant pain in her nasal area. Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, April 7th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. In today's action-packed show, we cover a lot of ground on a ton of issues that we were supposed to care about. We are being distracted with trolling about buying Canada and Greenland, while Republicans and their tech bro donors are selling us out on the core issues of inflation and invasion. I explain my controlled opposition theorem of how the Left needs to co-opt the populist movement and jujitsu it to leftist outcomes while offering the veneer of moving to the right on meaningless things like “the Laken Rilley bill.” This idea of having foreign investors create “data centers” in red America is also a bad idea for numerous reasons. Plus, we play Coward or Craven to understand why both the influencers and the voters on the Right suddenly don't care about inflation. Are they stupid or subversive?
