A vampire drifts into Brooklyn with destiny on his mind—and somehow leaves horror and comedy at the door. We pull apart Vampire in Brooklyn with a candid look at how a dream lineup of Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, and Wes Craven gets tripped up by clashing tones, studio pressures, and choices that confuse more than they charm. From the opening shipwreck to the final showdowns, we trace the moments that could have worked if the film had committed to being scary first and funny second. We dig into the big swings and misses: the inconsistent accent that derails character, the infamous wig that becomes a distraction, and the lack of chemistry that saps the romance subplot. Still, there's a pulse in the supporting cast. John Witherspoon and Kadeem Hardison inject real laughs and carry entire scenes with timing and throwaway lines that have aged better than the effects. We also talk soundtrack choices, backlot “Brooklyn,” and why some mid-90s morphs hold up while other visual beats get overplayed.Pulling in the broader context, we examine Murphy's 90s rollercoaster and Craven's own lesson: don't “play funny”—make it scary and the humor follows. Expect sharp comparisons to better alternatives, from Dracula: Dead and Loving It to Renfield and Vampires Kiss, and trivia that reframes the production, including reports of creative clashes and a tragic stunt accident. If you're a horror fan, a comedy nerd, or just curious how a genre mashup can go sideways, this breakdown brings clarity, receipts, and a few genuine laughs along the way.If you enjoy honest deep dives and smarter horror talk, follow the show, share this episode with a friend, and leave a quick review to help others find us. What happens when one city councillor gets Toronto council to vote in favour of “studying” garden suites on a single block, potentially undoing years of zoning reform? In this episode of The Missing Middle, Mike Moffatt and Meredith Martin dig into the Craven Road and Parkmount Avenue dispute to reveal how neighbourhood politics, NIMBYism, and endless “consultation” are slowing Toronto's housing progress. Before Scream made meta-horror mainstream, Wes Craven created something truly unique: a horror film where the actors played themselves, filmed in the real New Line Cinema offices, exploring what happens when fictional evil breaks into reality.Freddy Krueger had officially died in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare in 1991, and from 1984 his character had evolved from terrifying villain to quipping and comedic, and New Line Cinema had already started merchandising the character. Realizing that maybe they had killed Freddy too soon, New Line wanted a way to resurrect him without actually resurrecting him. There was always something deeply unnerving about putting Krueger on a pedestal, and no-one thought it more than his original creator, Wes Craven… Wes Craven's New Nightmare cleverly blurs the line between fiction and reality, creating a unique meta-narrative, starring original final girl Heather Langenkamp as herself, focusing on her journey from horror star to mother and how that reflects the personal impact of the franchise on her fictional life. Craven specifically wanted to focus on how horror movies affect children, showcasing the blurred boundaries between protection and temptation. Despite its initial box office struggles, New Nightmare has gained a cult following, mostly in the wake of Wes Craven's next project, Scream, which took what New Nightmare had attempted and refined it. Wes Craven said that Scream was a movie for people who watch horror movies, and New Nightmare was a movie for people who make horror movies. Scream is credited for refreshing the slasher, but we all know New Nightmare is Wes Craven's real life meta masterpiece.I would love to hear your thoughts on Wes Craven's New Nightmare !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Forgotten Horror 7 kicks off with "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" (1994), the meta slasher that dared to blur the lines between fiction and reality. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field appreciate some of the ideas here—bringing Freddy Krueger into the “real” world, playing with Heather Langenkamp as herself, and giving Wes Craven and Robert Englund roles in their own nightmare. But as the Mikes discuss, the film doesn't quite go far enough with its meta concept. Instead, it feels like wasted potential: not enough scares, not enough exploration of Craven himself, and too few moments where the horror fully delivers. The Mikes also take a detour into the world of slashers at large, debating who their favorite killers are and where Freddy stands in the pantheon of horror icons. So sharpen your claws, flip the script, and join Forgotten Cinema as Forgotten Horror 7 gets underway!Who's your favorite classic horror film slasher? We've received a LOT of requests to cover this one over the years.  Directed by F/X mogul Robert Kurtzman and produced by Wes Craven, this late 90s gem features a TON of 80s Horror Icons.  Anyone who wanted an 'Expendables" version of Horror actors need look no further.  This is what you want.  Very few movies from this era had so many great practical effects.  The Gore is superb.  The Djinn was a fantastic new villain for the time, played by a deliciously charismatic Andrew Divoff.  We hope you enjoy our Horror 101 Treatment of Wishmaster.  Show Highlights:01:00 Prelude to Terror...05:30  Remembering Wishmaster from the 90s...11:20  "Show me Wonders!"15:00  Shipyard Disaster...16:50  The Fire Opal...21:00  Djinn on the Loose...22:45  Buck Flower and Reggie...27:12  Visiting Beaumont...30:40  Taking a Face...34:00  "Everybody's a Witness..."35:20  Going 'Through' Kane Hodder38:45  Djinn Revealed...44:00  Two Wishes Down...45:10  Johnny Valentine...48:00  "I'd Love to Host a Party Like That..."52:15  The Final Wish...57:10  Scoring the Film...62:30  Conclusion...Thanks for Listening!!

Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas is the sixth book in the Ravenel series. The Ravenels are the most recent series in Kleypas' extended universe—going back to the Gamblers of Craven. The Ravenels are a family made up of two sets of cousins: Devon, Earl of Trenear and West Ravenel, then Helen Ravenel and her twin sisters Pandora and Cassandra. Cassandra's main goal is to have a family and she feels particularly lonely on the day of her twin's wedding. Tom Severin, an industrialist and sometimes friend to Devon and West and Ravenel, offers to marry her after he overhears her express her anxieties about ever getting married. He's immediately taken with her beauty and pragmatic interest in running a home, two things he is seeking in a wife. But when Tom reveals to Cassandra that he can never love her because he insists he is incapable, she puts distance between them. This book is one of Kleypas' more recent publications, from 2020. She has a long backlist and while this book definitely reads like a romance from the 2020s, there are many tell-tale signs of a Kleypas original.Support us on our Patreon!Visit our website for transcripts and show notes: reformedrakes.comFollow us on social media:Twitter: @reformedrakesInstagram: @reformedrakesBluesky: @reformedrakesBeth's SubstackChels' SubstackEmma's SubstackThank you for listening!
