2025. április 17., csütörtök 8-9 óra TRUMPOCRACY: a költségcsökkentés láncfűrésze elérte a világ egyik legfontosabb adatbázisát… In our world of urgency, certitudes, and immediate access to a flood of information, could it be that a humble curiosity, inspired awe, and delightful wonder might give us the strength to heal and thrive?Using an expansive emotional vocabulary matched with wit and care, TV host, podcaster, and author Kelly Corrigan is inviting the world to relational vulnerability, compassionate curiosity, and stalwart bravery to face our biggest problems through listening and loving wonder. In this conversation with Kelly Corrigan, we discuss:Her approach to having conversations that feel transformative—the kind that unlock and open us upHow wonder grounds her spirituality and personal vocationThe profound lessons she learned from her mother and father, and how each showed up for her when she was at her lowestHow to learn wisdom and leadership through coaching and mentoringHow to build the emotional container of home for a familyWhat it means to be brave in our world todayAnd how to communicate love through the simple act of listening through three simple invitations: “Tell me more!, What else?, and Go on.”About Kelly CorriganKelly Corrigan is a journalist of wonder. And that adulthood is knowing when to pull out which piece of paper.”Childhood and parental influence reveal deep insights into a person's adult self.Vivid childhood memories help shape storytelling and personal understanding.“A strong, detailed memory of an experience is an indicator that there's a lot there for you.”Famous people also deal with everyday concerns, which makes them relatable.“They're just looking for a sandwich at lunchtime.”Perspective shifts with age, realizing that many things once thought important aren't.“There's 8 billion people here. It doesn't matter what I say and do.”Embracing the paradox of being both insignificant and uniquely valuable.“Being an adult is holding in one pocket that you are ashes to ashes, dust to dust… and in the other pocket that you are a never-to-be-repeated miracle.”Kelly's father, George Corrigan, was an enthusiastic listener and deeply engaging with others.“The thing you need to know about me is I'm George Corrigan's daughter.”Her father's ability to find something lovable in everyone influenced her deeply.“He wasn't looking for people just like him… he could become engaged in something he knew nothing about.”Kelly Corrigan's TED Talk, "To Love Is to Be Brave"Her mother, Mary Corrigan, was structured, disciplined, and devoted to family. “She went to church every single day.”Passed away six weeks before the interview, leaving a strong legacy.”I felt like I had been loved and people cared about me. Action.' And then it's just me and this other person and the fullness of our attention to one another is thrilling by virtue of the fact that it's so damn rare. And sometimes when I'm finished, I'm like, there's almost like a romance to it. You know, like where I'm like, I, I love you. I love the experience that we just had.”Clarity and purpose often come in caregiving moments, like her parents' passing.“90 minutes of pure connection.”Pam King's experience of her daughter's hospitalization after a rare infectionKelly describes her experience of cancer in her thirties.Be mindful of what you consume—both media and information.“Junk in, junk out.”Engage in hobbies that disconnect from screens, such as painting and cooking.“Read poetry. Tell me more. What else? Go on.”“Just ask questions. Nobody's listening. So just be the person who listens. It's like the lowest bar.”Enabling someone to get over themselvesCreating space for another person's life, story, and emotions to unfold“So embrace intellectual humility and just assume that you do not have any relevant information to give them and that your only work is to keep saying, tell me more, what else go on? And they'll talk their way into a solution.”“And so it's a little bit of like physiological adjustment. And then it's also this intellectual pause. And it's also a big emotional pause. So like, do your dishes slowly with a scent that you like. … It's like a tiny reset.”Live takeaways from Pam and Kelly“Wonder is cheap and accessible and effective. It's like, free!”Embody wonder into the power of listening.“Part of the reason why Christy Turlington is so beautiful is her posture. So sit up straight.”“500 questions before you marry someone and commit your life to them is not a bad idea.”“Junk in, junk out. Like be careful what you put in your head. Your head is a sacred space. Do not put junk in there. Don't listen to junk. Don't watch junk. Don't read junk. Like, it's sacred. Think of it as like a cathedral. You wouldn't take like a shitty meatball sub and eat it in the backseat of a cathedral. You know what I mean?”“ The fullness of life involves this full cup that is full of joys and sorrows.”“ It only takes one person. It only takes one person to correct for a lot of absence. Doesn't mean it's going to be perfect. It doesn't mean it's going to wipe away every ounce of pain, but one person investing can compensate for a lot that's been missing.”Deep interviews as rare opportunities for pure connection“It's weirdly unusual to have a full hour of pure connection.”Facing fear and hardship as part of the full human experience“A full human experience includes all the emotions at full maximum dosage.”Finding purpose in slowing down and being intentional with habits“Evaluate your diet—not just food, but content, relationships, and daily habits.” About the Thrive CenterLearn more at thethrivecenter.org.Follow us on Instagram @thrivecenterFollow us on X @thrivecenterFollow us on LinkedIn @thethrivecenter About Dr. Pam KingDr. Pam King is Executive Director the Thrive Center and is Peter L. „Komédiánk hősének lövése sincs a művészetről. - a világhírű angol író, Nick Hornby novelláját BodorGéza rendezte összművészeti előadássá. A CiciKrisztusnak a Kiscelli Múzeum ad otthont, Dave szerepében Ficzere Bélát látjuk.
Ficzere Béla színművész a CiciKrisztus című különleges előadás főszereplője. Kiderül a műsorból!
As part of The New York Times Book Review's project on the 100 Best Books published since the year 2000, Nick Hornby called "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland" one of the "greatest literary achievements of the 21st century." The author Patrick Radden Keefe joins host Gilbert Cruz to talk about his book, which has now been adapted into an FX miniseries.Keefe has now seen his reporting on the life of Irish Republican Army soldier Dolours Price and others make its way from a New Yorker magazine article to an acclaimed nonfiction book to a streaming series. "In terms of storytelling, I try to write in a way that is as visceral and engaging as possible," Keefe said. "But the toolkit that you have when you make a series is so much more visceral. It's almost fissile in its power." Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. Send us a textThis is not your 2005 Fever Pitch. We watch the 1997 Fever Pitch with Colin Firth so you don't have to. But if you're a fan of Mr. Darcy, maybe you still want to. If your a fan of Arsenal FC, maybe you still want to. We talk Firth Fros, how dumb it is to be a sports fan, even though we still are, and the differences between UK versions of things and their US counterparts. Meaning we talk about this movie and the 2005 version and the UK Office and the US Office. And we get in to hot water with some hot takes about soccer/football. Come for the banter and stay to get really mad at us, or agree with us. Based on the much-lauded Nick Hornby classic, our Jen has picked filmic festival of football, Fever Pitch. But will protagonist and giant man-child Paul, played by Colin Firth, float Hannah or Jen's boat? And what is the film trying to say, other than that women don't like football? Have you ever gone back to really examine something you loved when you were younger? This month we dig into our record collection and put a fresh spin on Nick Hornby's 1995 novel High Fidelity. The movie of this film from 2000 made a big impact on me in high school, so much so that I didn't even realize how much I thought about it in my day to day life. We have a compilation of takes on the book, including why I think the protagonist Rob struggles so much. Make sure you turntable speed is set to 33 RPM, this is definitely and LP.
The finale of our season on the awesome movie year of 2000 features our audience choice poll winner, Stephen Frears' High Fidelity. Our exit today has us making our ultimate mixtape and talking about our worst break ups. This week, we are talking about High Fidelity, based on the Nick Hornby novel and directed by Stephen Frears. And, we have picked up a passenger for the episode, friend of the show and quizmaster extraordinaire Taylor Cole! Along the way, Taylor becomes the first person to ever compare High Fidelity to Taxi Driver, Ross uses the word "myopic" way too much, and we discuss the rise of Jack Black, John Cusack as romantic lead, the benefits of talking directly to the camera, Stevie Wonder, the musical and TV adaptations of High Fidelity, and what some actors will do for a great wig. Plus, Taylor brings a fun game to stump Tripp and Ross! Thememusic by Jonworthymusic. Powered by RiversideFM. The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show, hosted by Taylor Cole. I speak with author Liz Riggs about the impending publication of her debut novel, Lo Fi out on Riverhead Books June 9. Liz's publisher was kind enough to send me an advance copy, and from paragraph one I recognized the reverb-drenched setting — a world of live bands, late nights, broken AC, unravelling yard parties, and half-remembered conversations over hand-rolled joints — as my own. I was a devoted participant of the world of Lo Fi, namely the post-flood Nashville of the 2010s. I went to the clubs, I closed down the dive bars. Some remain (The Basement, The Blue Room, The 5 spot) many do not (RIP Mercy Lounge, 12th and Porter, ) but Lo-Fi's whiskey-soaked setting was for me an irresistible reminiscence of a Nashville that no longer exists.Because the protagonist was so well-drawn, I assumed Liz herself worked at a club in town. She didn't, it turns out. We talk about what she did do, and how her fangirl inclinations (she admits to a teenage fascination with a well know 90s boyband) were easily transferred to her enthusiastic main character. I'm always fascinated to hear an author describe her path to publication — everyone's is different, and in listening to the particulars of one I find inspiration for my own way forward. We talk about Liz's journey, including the nail-biting weeks, days and hours where she awaited her prospective publisher's final word as to Lo-Fi's fate. I've read of writers (mostly dead ones honestly) who scrawled out their first drafts in longhand. But I've never met a contemporary who does it. Liz talked about her preference for the pen, and the freedom that results from a page one decision to unplug. We discuss her decision to set the story in a time that predates the social-media everything culture of today, and how that absence made it easier to tell a story about criss-crossed communication and the innocence of fledgling love. We compared notes and found some shared ground in our attraction to artists who write their own material, as opposed to those who sing the songs other people make for them. Finally we talk about what's great about living in a town with enough neon appeal to be called “It City” by the New York Times, and what's maybe not so great about that. If you like books like Nick Hornby's High-Fidelity, or Roddy Doyle's The Commitments, you'll find alot to like about Lo-Fi too. Here's a link to pre-order the book, and if you live in Nashville Liz is celebrating with a release show June 9 at the OG Basement with performances by Chris Housman and Vinnie Paolizzi.Find Liz:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/riggser/Website https://www.lizriggs.com/The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. Serge Bielanko was one of the leading forces behind the Philadelphia-based rock & roll band Marah. Part Replacements, part Van Morrison, part Phil Spector, part Rod Stewart & The Faces, part Philly & Motown soul, for years they were poised for success as the “next big rock & roll band”. Marah was a critic's darling and counted some famous folks (Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, and several authors)as part of their fan base. Another fan, many listeners of this podcast know, is the late Kevin Cassidy who caught on to them late, but made up for lost time with a real passion for the band. Nick Hornby, author of “High Fidelity” in the NY Times March 2004“ '20,000 Streets Under the Sky'' is [Marah's] fourth album, and they're by no means famous yet, as the passing of the hat in the Fiddler's Elbow indicates. But what I love about them is that I can hear everything I ever loved about rock music in their recordings and in their live shows. Indeed, in the shows you can often hear their love for the rock canon uninflected -- they play covers of the Replacements' ''Can't Hardly Wait,'' or the Jam's ''In the City,'' and they usually end with a riffed-up version of the O'Jays' ''Love Train.'' They play an original called ''The Catfisherman'' with a great big Bo Diddley beat, and they quote the Beatles' ''Tomorrow Never Knows'' and the Who's ''Magic Bus.'' And they do this not because they're a bar band and people expect cover versions, but because they are unafraid of showing where their music comes from, and unafraid of the comparisons that will ensue -- just as Bruce Springsteen (who really did play ''Little Latin Lupe Lu'' for an encore, sometimes) was unafraid.” Stephen King, author of a million great horror novels, Entertainment Weekly 2006“If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry-Marah. An apt enough title, when you consider that this is probably the best rock band in America that nobody knows. Am I being an elitist here, trying to one-up my audience? Nope. Marah is great in the scat, bop, and jive way Springsteen was great on The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. One listen to songs like ”The Closer” and ”Fat Boy” on this amazing record and I think you'll agree. These guys are either the American U2 or close enough for government work.” In March 2000, shortly after the opening of Tower Records on the Ave of the Arts in Philadelphia, they dropped their magnum opus “Kids In Philly”. Opening with a blaring foghorn, sounding an alarm, “Kids in Philly” quickly sets about a musical tour de force of their city, Philadelphia, complete with the sounds of present and past. Tower Records Avenue of the Arts hosted Marah for their “Kids in Philly” day-of-release in-store. As the years passed Tower Philadelphia and Lincoln Center hosted Marah for 4 in-stores in 5 years. With their follow-up album, Marah took a sharp left turn with an album produced by Owen Morris, best known for his work with Oasis, The Verve, and Kaiser Chiefs. The album landed with a thud, leaving Marah's base of supporters befuddled and not picking up any new fans. From there the band went back to a more familiar style and continued to work their way back. Despite releasing a total of 9 albums, drama never seemed too far from the band. Throughout the years various musicians rotated in and out of Marah until Serge ultimately quit the band to pursue other interests including writing a weekly column called “Thunder Pie” https://sergebielanko.substack.com.Join us for an epic conversation about the ups, downs, ins & outs of rock and roll in the 20th & 21st century with Serge Bielanko.

This week's theories, rants, ruminations, recollections, weak gags and free and frank exchanges of view alight upon the following … … is pop music now all about identity? …. the recording of the Animals' House of the Rising Sun and other apocryphal tales. … has any act been as ubiquitous since Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1984? … or has anyone inspired a greater level of personal devotion than Taylor Swift? … Peter Green, a shotgun and his accountant. … books bought but never read. .. re-reading Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and the changing benchmarks for good and bad musical taste. … intriguing parallels between the book and record industries. … and Neil Tennant braves the digital lynch-mob. Plus Adam Clayton's garden, Konstantin Chernenko, Richard Burton, Rebel Wilson, Dark Academia, creepy weepies and birthday guest John Montagna looks at singles by the same act that are ‘descendants' – ie pretty much identical – eg the Monkees' Teardrop City and Last Train To Clarksville, the Kinks' You Really Got Me and All Day And All of the Night and Mark Knopfler's Cannibals and Walk Of Life. Or just try the first few seconds of these four by the Inkspots – Maybe, I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire, If I Didn't Care and Whispering Grass.Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free - access to all of our content, plus a whole load more!: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Groeten! Join me this week for an enlightening discussion with Priscilla Gilman, acclaimed author of the upcoming paperback release of her critically acclaimed memoir, The Critic's Daughter. Priscilla, a former professor of English literature at Yale and Vassar, brings a wealth of insight as we explore the intricacies of co-parenting and divorce. Beyond her literary achievements, Priscilla is one of my oldest friends, which adds a personal touch to our conversation. The Critic's Daughter becomes a guide on what not to do when faced with the complexities of divorce, providing a personal and poignant account of Priscilla's experiences. It's a rare opportunity to glimpse into my childhood, too, and witness the powerful narrative of Priscilla's parents' divorce – a tale of resilience, hardship, and the mistakes made during an era when people simply didn't know how to get divorced without deeply affecting their children. Learn more about Priscilla Gilman: Priscilla Gilman is a former professor of English literature at both Yale University and Vassar College and the author of The Anti-Romantic Child: A Story of Unexpected Joy (Harper), and The Critic's Daughter (Norton). The Anti-Romantic Child was excerpted in Newsweek magazine and featured on the cover of its international edition. It received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist, was an NPR Morning Edition Must-Read, Slate‘s Book of the Week, one of the year's Best Books for the Leonard Lopate Show and The Chicago Tribune, and one of five nominees for a Books for a Better Life Award for Best First Book. Andrew Solomon called it “rapturously beautiful and deeply moving, profound, and marvelous.” Gilman's second book, The Critic's Daughter, was published by W.W. Norton in February 2023 (paperback February 2024); a memoir about her relationship with her brilliant and complicated father, the late drama and literary critic Richard Gilman, it is set in the heyday of intellectual culture in New York of the 1970s and 80s. The Critic's Daughter received starred reviews in Kirkus and Booklist; Nick Hornby called it “Beautiful: honest, raw, careful, soulful, brave and incredibly readable.” It was a Washington Post Best Book of 2023, a New York Times Book Critics' Favorite Book of 2023, one of the Los Angeles Times' book critic and Book Maven Bethanne Patrick's Top 10 Non-Fiction Books of 2023, one of the "18 Books Lilith magazine Loved in 2023," and 3rd on Bookreporter's Harvey Freedenburg's Favorite Books of 2023. Since 2011, Gilman has taught literature and writing in countless settings. She was the parenting/education advice columnist for #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Cain's Quiet Revolution website. She speaks frequently at schools, conferences, and organizations about parenting, education, autism, and the arts. In 2018, she became a certified Mindfulness and Loving-Kindness meditation teacher. Talent will always win out. At least, I hope so. Talent and creativity and humor and perseverance. But all of us need a moment that opens the window to the rest of our lives. That window opened for Nick Hornby during a conversation with an agent that was not going particularly well. Nick decided “what the hell” at the end of the conversation and pitched a book idea that he knew would be rejected by the agent. The agent loved the idea and Nick Hornby was off and running. How lucky for us to be along for the ride. I hope you enjoy part 2 of my conversation with Nick Hornby.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick Hornby has never written the phone book, to use an old expression. But if he did, I'd read it. Hornby is one of those writers who elicits unbridled enthusiasm from his unabashed admirers. Count me in, thanks to books like High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and About A Boy. He always had a love of reading and writing and music and sports. But turning it into a lifetime of books and a way to make a living? That was more than a few years in coming. But come it did. How fortunate are we.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
