Daniel Kenner's parents had always been loving, giving people who gave all they had to the world. Their ability to do that declined sharply when his father was diagnosed with dimentia and his mother, shortly after, with cancer. Daniel took every opportunity to support them, but also to ask them questions and hear their stories. Putting his life on hold, as so many caregivers do, he took advantage of this precious, short time in which he knew he would soon be without them. The resulting book, Room for Grace, kept him company in his grief and honored the gifts they had given him all his life.

Caregiver Storyteller - About Alzheimer's and Dementia Caregiving
Daniel Kenner is an actor based in New York City. As his father Buddy faced dementia and his mother Maureen battled cancer, Daniel served as one of many caregivers. With caregiving support from family, friends, and community, Daniel was able to spend time with his parents recording the stories of their lives. Working with his mother, Daniel ultimately transformed her life story into a book that explores her career as a teacher of special education students in Providence, Rhode Island. That book, “Room for Grace” was released on October 2, 2018.
In this episode, I sat down with Author Daniel Kenner to talk about his new book, "Room for Grace," an oral history that deals with the life of his mother as she battled stage 4 cancer for her and a debilitating disease for her husband: life crashed down in an instant. Maureen Kenner found resilience, however, in the lessons she learned from her Special Ed students in Providence, RI. Her students lived with their hearts opened despite struggles of the highest magnitude. Through these students, Maureen gains courage, humor, and the strength of spirit to face her devastating realities, head on. Maureen’s oral history was captured by her son Daniel who tenderly wrought this book out of their recorded conversations. Through anecdotes and hard-earned lessons, Maureen tackles challenge after challenge and reframes daily struggles with a positive outlook allowing her to transcend and conquer mortal fears with dignity and room for grace.
