THE ŚŪRAṄGAMA SUTRA: Being Indestructible A ten-week sutra study course Thursday evenings, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm (PT) April 18 – June 20, 2024 Tuition: $300 The Śūraṅgama Sutra is a mysterious sutra found in the Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist canons, and is a foundational text for the Zen and Vajrayana traditions, where it is used as a primer for beginners. Surprisingly, significant parts of this sutra were first translated in English in 1871, followed by a translation that appeared in Dwight Goddard's A Buddhist Bible in 1932, where it became influential among Jack Kerouac and the ‘beat spiritualists' of the post-war era. The sutra is a long dialogue between the Buddha and Ānanda on the nature of mind and consciousness, a format reminiscent of the ‘pointing-out' instructions of the Dzogchen tradition and the Zen practice of ‘directly pointing at the mind'. This ten-week course will explore the major chapters of this important text and provide an overview of the entire sutra and its history. ESCAPE FROM SAMSARA: Introduction to World-Systems A presentation on Buddhist Cosmology Saturday May 18, 2024 9:00am – 11:00pm (Pacific) This class by donation, suggested fee : $45 A cosmology is an understanding of where the world and the beings in it came from, what they are made of, and what happens to them when they decay. When studying Buddhism, it is helpful to be familiar with the basic tenets of traditional Indian cosmology, and some of the unique features of Buddhist cosmology that developed from them. This visual presentation uses art and iconography from a variety of traditions to create an immersive experience that explores several alternative views of creation, space and time, multiple heavenly and hellish realms, and the abodes of the gods, while laying out a Buddhist cosmological roadmap to liberation - from Samsara to Nirvana. LUSB 2024 SUMMER RETREAT I am in the planning stages of a multi-day, in-person sutra study retreat. The retreat will run approximately 2-3 days in length, and will most likely be held in Northern California, in mid -to -late August this Summer. I am trying to get a sense of how many people would be interested in attending so I can locate an appropriate location and lodging. The retreat would revolve around the reading and discussion of a particular sutra in structured sessions, with ‘monastery style' days, including communal vegan/vegetarian meals, silent meditation sessions, opportunities for physical practice, and time for solitary reflection. Chapter 42 of the Dwight Goddard translation of the Tao Te Ching. 10 minute guided meditation followed by discussion. In today's talk I begin by discussing work, money, their effects on us and on nature, and the conditioned responses that were planted in each of us as children that we didn't get to choose. Meditation gives us the opportunity to notice those conditioned responses. It creates the possibility for choice, even if only briefly. As you strengthen this through a regular sitting practice, you gain more chances to make choices that resonate with your innermost truth, as opposed to acting out rote responses planted in you by others who were themselves acting unconsciously. While assigning and then reaching for a goal with meditation is usually counterproductive, this outcome - noticing your inner truth - is a tangible benefit of sitting that we can look forward to, similar to the way facing our fears regularly can increase our ability to act courageously. I finish with a discussion of Chapter 42. *  *  * 42. The Transformation of Tao Tao produces unity; unity produces duality; duality produces trinity; trinity produces all things. All things bear the negative principle (yin) and embrace the positive principle (yang). Immaterial vitality, the third principle (chi), makes them harmonious. Those things which are detested by the common people, namely to be called orphans, inferiors, and unworthies, are the very things kings and lords take for titles. There are some things which it is a gain to lose, and a loss to gain. I am teaching the same things which are taught by others. But the strong and aggressive: ones do not obtain a natural death (i.e., self-confident teachers do not succeed). I alone expound the basis of the doctrine of the Tao. Chapter 40 of the Dwight Goddard translation of the Tao Te Ching. 10 minute guided meditation followed by discussion. Today I discuss the difficulty of meditating, the trap of meditating for personal gain or self-improvement, and connect the message of Chapter 40 with the existence and non-existence of our own conscious experience. *  *  * 40. AVOIDING ACTIVITY Retirement is characteristic of Tao just as weakness appears to be a characteristic of its activity. Heaven and earth and everything are produced from existence, but existence comes from nonexistence. . . Listen to episode 108 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Tao Te Ching. Edited and adapted from Dwight Goddard’s translation of the Lao Tzu’s classic book Tao Te Ching. Spirituality Podcast Excerpt: The Tao has three treasures which it guards and cherishes. The first is called compassion; the second is called economy; the third is called humility. A person who is compassionate can 'be truly brave; a person who is economical can be truly generous; a person who is humble can become a useful servant. If we discard compassion and are still brave, abandon economy and are still generous, forsake humility and still seek to be serviceable, our days are numbered. On the other hand, if we are truly compassionate, in battle we will be a conqueror and in defense we will be secure. When even Heaven helps people it is because of compassion that she does so. My words are very easy to understand and very easy to put into practice, yet in all the world no one appears to understand them or to practice them. Words have an ancestor (a preceding idea), deeds have a master (a preceding purpose), and just as these are often not understood, so I am not understood.
