Welcome today fellow griever. I appreciate you, I see you and thank you so much for listening and if you can, please ---Support the showToday, I release a recent conversation with Betsy Thibaut Stephenson to talk about her son Charlie who was a smart, witty, reserved, and was (silently) living with being 'unmotivated' & being depressed. Despite doing what seemed like all of the right things, Charlie, a rising senior in college, died by suicide in July of 2022 at only 21 years old. It was shocking and devastating -- and they are learning to live with it, to carry with it! "Betsy Thibaut Stephenson lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and labrador retrievers. When she isn't visiting her grown daughters in North Carolina and South Carolina, she is helping public affairs clients tell their story to policymakers and the media. Blackbird is her first book."There are SO many take aways from this mom-to-mom heart-to-heart....Here's a few of the highlights of our conversation include: How they responded as a family when Charlie reached out when he spoke out about his thoughts of self-harm from the first time. The trips to see him after he opened up-- and the letter she wrote him, that he carried with him & was found in his backpack after he was gone. The letters he wrote and left behind (not a suicide note, per se, but insight of sorts) & what those told his family & how they 'helped' them understand moreThe shock of his death-- and how they spoke 'the open truth' from the beginning.ALL of the 'signs; she gets from him now... why bringing him into 'everything" helps and makes it lighter somehow. (I love this part!) It's OK to be 'selfish' in your griefWhy the title "Blackbird" for the book --- you HAVE TO HEAR THIS--- stuff you can NOT make up here people!?? In Episode 410 of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd bring listeners an entertaining and eclectic mix of music and movie talk in an episode packed with personality, passion, and plenty of nerdy insight.First up, the duo dive into a thematic musical countdown as they each share and discuss their Top 5 Favorite Songs About Animals. Expect a fun, energetic discussion as they explore a diverse playlist that spans decades and genres. From the primal pop punch of Duran Duran's “Hungry Like the Wolf” and the punk-infused chaos of The Trashmen's “Surfin' Bird,” to the introspective lyricism of The Beatles' “Blackbird” and the surreal surf rock of The B-52s' “Rock Lobster,” the conversation flows freely through musical memories and personal associations. Other notable tracks include the haunting message of “Meat Is Murder” by The Smiths, the raucous rebellion of W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast),” and the biblical whimsy of Bob Dylan's “Man Gave Names to All the Animals.” Rounding out the playlist are the motivational anthem “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, Dylan's traditional folk nod “Froggy Went A Courtin',” and the poignant “Free As a Bird” by The Beatles. Check out the playlist on YouTube. In the second half of the episode, Tim the Nerd takes center stage to tackle the latest shake-up in the world of cinema: Amazon's acquisition of EON Productions' stake in the James Bond franchise. Tim offers his analysis on what this means for the future of 007, raising questions about creative control, the potential for expanded Bond content beyond the traditional film format, and the challenges of maintaining the franchise's integrity under corporate influence. Will Bond's mystique survive the streaming era, or are we in for a reinvention of the world's most iconic spy?As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.

McCartney's ability to craft the most capitvating, simple, and gorgeous melodies never fails to amaze. Conceived (we think/he tells us) as a song of encouragement and support for the civil rights movement, in full swing by 1968, "Blackbird" has become one of Paul's signature songs. It was the title of his poetry collection. It's one of the most tattoo'd Beatle lyrics and imagery. It's one of his best, and he knows it, and we know it. Joining us this week is Allan Kozinn, co-author of the brilliant McCartney Legacy book series. Vol.2 dropped at the end of 2024, and like Vol. 1 before, has garnered rave reviews. It's the most in-depth and thoughtful dive on Paul's non-Beatles years ever done, and we can't recommend it enough! Allan drops in to talk his "demonic" book, the human side of Paul, uncovering treasures in plain sight, and more! Grab a copy at https://www.mccartneylegacy.com/ !What do you think about "Blackbird" at #73? Too high? Too low? Let us know in the comments on Facebook, Instagram, or find us now on Bluesky! Grieving Out Loud: A Mother Coping with Loss in the Opioid Epidemic
Sometimes, life delivers blow after blow, leaving you gasping for air. Whether it's the loss of a job, a home, or someone you love, grief can feel all-consuming—like joy may never return. For Betsy Stephenson, the heartbreak came in rapid succession. Within just six weeks, she lost her mother-in-law to dementia, her family dog to cancer, and—most devastating of all—her son to suicide. But instead of allowing the grief to swallow her whole, Betsy turned to writing.Through raw, unfiltered reflections captured in real time, she began to process her pain and offer hope to others walking through similar darkness. In this episode of Grieving Out Loud, Betsy shares her journey through unimaginable loss, the lessons she's learned along the way, and what inspired her to publish her intimate memoir, Blackbird. Her story is both deeply emotional and quietly courageous—a reminder that even in the darkest skies, light still finds a way through. If you liked this episode, listen to these episodes next:Broken Heart Syndrome: 4 Ways We GrieveA mother's grief journey and how it changed her lifeSend us a textThe Emily's Hope Substance Use Prevention Curriculum has been carefully designed to address growing concerns surrounding substance use and overdose in our communities. In my time cruising around Substack, one of the more interesting personalities I've come across is a fellow named Wez, aka Obsidian Blackbird. who writes “Memories of a Post Grunge Drifter”, a sort of ongoing autobiographical project that winds its way across the end of Generation X and the turn of the new millennium through the eyes of a vagabond Kiwi. Along the way, Wez shows us how the adversity of his family situation was dealt with, or not, via running away from home and leading a life not unlike that lived by another friend and former guest of this show, A.M. Hickman. A journey that spans the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean while straddling cultural shifts of rural living in the British Empire's furthest flung outpost to the streets of early 2000s Sydney and Toronto, and onward into the weirdness of post Covid America, Wez's life has been lived with both hands firmly gripping the short and curlies. This interview is as entertaining as his writings, often accompanied by his own illustrations, which you ought to check out here -https://obsidianblackbird.substack.com/A brief selection of titles -The Cruise Ship as a Spiritual ExperienceOperation Finnish PrincessI Was a Gypsy Roadside Rug SalesmanEscaping From Bad Men that look out for Teen RunawaysSnow White and The Seven Starving BogansWez is nothing if not prolific; those five titles barely scratch the surface of his output - if you've got the time and inclination, there is so much more. And after all of that, he's going back to New Zealand to start a ‘Right Wing Hippie Commune'. Retired trial judge, Rusty Duke, came to the Hoffman Process on the advice of his wise, eleven-year-old granddaughter. Her father, Rusty's son, had returned home happier after his time in California. While swinging on a porch swing together, Rusty and his granddaughter were talking. She said she thought that Rusty, her grandfather, was happy, but Rusty would return from California even happier, just like her dad had. Rusty listened to her wise counsel. Just two days later, he registered for the Process. The prominent theme running through Rusty's story is happiness. He was a happy child. He has a good life. And, Rusty did, indeed, return home even happier. One of the most important realizations students have during the Process is that we are not our patterns. Before coming to the Process, Rusty didn't know he had patterns. Realizing that we have patterns and that we aren't those patterns can open the door to a deeper discovery of life and who we are. In Rusty's words, Hoffman "brings a reality to life. It helps you to stop and listen and consider where you are, who you are, and what you are." During his week at the Process, Rusty crossed the 'bridge' into a newfound sense of self-love, shepherded by the love he felt from his Process-mates. He'd never really heard anyone talk about self-love before. Rusty left California and returned home, leaving behind the negative voices in his head that can keep self-love at bay. We hope you enjoy this heartwarming conversation with Judge Rusty Duke and Drew. More about Rusty Duke: Rusty Duke is a retired trial judge, married 52 years, with three children and nine grandchildren. Get ready, mutants and movie nerds! In this Insert Tape 2 episode, Danielle and Jackie welcome back fan-favorite (and cousin!) Patrice to break down 2000's X-Men with zero chill and maximum slander. From Wolverine's tall-tale casting to Storm's tragic line delivery (“Do you know what happens to a toad…” yeah, we're still mad), the trio takes a flamethrower to the film's baffling choices. Expect passionate rants, deep dives into comic book canon, and justice demands for Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, and every mutant the movie disrespected. Spoiler: Rogue is not a shy baby deer, and Jean Grey should not be fainting over a flying pencil. But it's not just about the mutants we loved and lost (to bad writing). The crew also unpacks the shady legacy of director Bryan Singer and his long history of abuse allegations. With the future of the MCU's X-Men hanging in the multiverse, they share their hopes, fears, and a little bit of chaos about how Marvel might finally do these iconic characters justice. Happy Podcast day, one and all! Welcome to back to The Big Year Podcast. Thank you once again for joining me. It's April 15, 2025 and spring migration is well underway here in southwestern Ontario. It's actually a bit of a miracle that I finished this episode on time because the last 2 weeks have been very busy for me and my fellow birders. It started with a Western Grebe in Port Credit, a Black-headed Gull, at Port Colborne, followed by a Long-billed Dowitcher right here in Brant County. The fun continued with over 50 American White Pelicans at Holiday Beach and a female Harlequin Duck down in Chatham-Kent. I also go my first Ruffed Grouse and Common Loon for Brant County, but the real excitement was the chase for a Crested Caracara in Essex County, not too far from the Ontario/Michigan boarder, on April 7. Dozens of birders flocked to the small town of Amherstburg for a once in a lifetime look at this large falcon that lost its way. This bird should have been in Texas, and after a long day of searching seemed to have returned home. I had then tried for a Yellow-headed Blackbird back in Chatham, but near blizzard conditions sent me home to contemplate missed opportunities. However, on Wednesday the weather was nice again, so I decided to go back and look for the Yellow-headed Blackbird. To my complete surprise, before I even arrived at McGeachy Pond, I was alerted to the return of the caracara, not in Amherstburg, but right there in Chatham, only 15 minutes from where I was parked at the side of the road. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I drove, I saw, I counted a new Canada Lifer! And I got to spend time with some of my favourite birding friends, including Kelly Sue, who you met on season one of the podcast. She lived only 5 minutes away. And yesterday we had another rare bird party as dozens of us migrated to Stoney Creek for a rare spring sighting of a Loggerhead Shrike. And all through that I was trying to find time to finish this podcast. Not only that, it's the onset of allergy season and my head feels like it's full of teddy bear stuffing. Today's episode features Robert Gundy and Natasza Fontaine. Robert is a biologist and Natasza was the 2024 ABA Bird of the Year Artist, painting the Golden-winged Warbler. And they both completed a record setting (Covid)Florida Big Year in 2020.

He looked fine—until he wasn't. Just eleven weeks after sharing his struggles, Charlie was gone. In this powerful episode, Betsy Thibaut Stephenson reveals how depression lied to her son and why telling the hard truth is key to healing. In today's episode, I'm joined by Betsy Thibaut Stephenson, a writer, communications professional, and mother based in Alexandria, Virginia. After the unexpected death of her 21-year-old son, Charlie, by suicide, Betsy began writing as a way to process her grief, eventually shaping her reflections into the poignant and powerful book Blackbird. With decades of experience helping others find their voice, she now uses her own to break the silence around suicide, mental health, and the complexities of loss. Her work is grounded in compassion, clarity, and the belief that honesty is essential to healing—offering hope to anyone navigating the aftermath of profound sorrow.Throughout this episode, Betsy brought those same qualities—honesty, courage, and clarity—to the forefront as she reflected on her family's decision to be fully transparent about Charlie's death. She shared how that openness not only helped their loved ones support them more effectively, but also created space for deeper community understanding. We explored the deceptive nature of depression, the emotional and physical toll of grief, and how writing became a lifeline in her healing journey. Betsy also discussed the structure and purpose behind Blackbird—a collection of short, digestible entries designed to meet grieving readers where they are. Her reflections serve as a powerful reminder that telling our stories, even when painful, can become a vital source of strength and connection.Tune in to episode 326 as Betsy Thibaut Stephenson shares how embracing openness, writing through sorrow, and honoring her son Charlie's life helped her navigate the depths of grief and find a path toward healing and connection. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Choosing radical openness after suicide (01:33)Making sense of an incomprehensible loss (06:31)“The brain lies to you” - Understanding depression (9:11)Letting go of guilt while living with it (12:51)Why and how she wrote Blackbird (15:20)Coping with loss and moving forward (17:48)Grief and the fog of memory (21:01)The book she needed but couldn't find (23:00)The hard things need to be said (31:30)Connect with Betsy Thibaut Stephenson:WebsiteInstagramLinkedInFacebookGet Betsy's book!Let's Connect:WebsiteLinkedInFacebookInstagramTwitterPinterestThe Grief and Happiness AllianceBook: Emily Thiroux Threatt - Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief Hosted on Acast. It's appropriate this book involves a circus because we about to clown on it. Join the squad for a Hatepisode about Brynn Weaver's Scythe & Sparrow, the third installment in the Ruinous Love Trilogy. After Mary gives us an overview of the other two books, we get a special review of Butcher & Blackbird by Emily's dad, Charlie. Then we talk about the cringeworthy “trigger warnings” and then spend a lot of time dissecting the “spice,” which is not as transgressive as it thinks it is. After we barely survive this discussion, we get into some listener feedback. Read along for our next Bookpisode about The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister on April 15th. Then join us April 29th for an Othersode about season 3 of The White Lotus, plus a conversation with Todd about his poetry collection, Gatherer. Have you read any of the Ruinous Love Trilogy?
