In marshes across the country, birds awaken on a summer morning. Tall dense grasses and reeds often make marsh birds hard to see, but their voices carry easily across the lush, green landscape. You can hear birds like the Redhead, the Sora, the American Bittern, the Ruddy Duck, this Yellow-headed Blackbird, and many more. More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote?
Magpies call and respond, Moorhen, Mallards sleeping on the paving slabs, someone in the cafe already to set up for the day, no cars or jets, only tinnitus, I stay very still to encourage a Magpie to get closer which it does for a while but then flies over to Lock Island, one of the Mallards flies away, the Magpie comes back, a Squirrel comes by very close on the ground, inquisitive, and for millions of years I like to think that it was quiet, everywhere existed without explanation, water flowed downstream, reeds grew, habitats formed, species evolved. And then came people shouting at dogs and slamming gates, the cakes were delivered by a man in a truck, shareholders made a profit, Mallards moved in to the grass to preen and coat their feathers with oil, Squirrels squirrelling, Robin surveying it's territory, a fly investigates the grains of wood on the table, distant Geese sound upset about something, I need to do more of this basking in the morning sun, a man on an electric scooter wearing a crash helmet, everything is growing imperceptibly slowly, a Bluebottle on my knee, now four Magpies investigating the grass, some white and grey clouds appear from the west and block out the warmth of the sun, a noisy maintenance van driving faster than the time I got told off for driving too fast down Flatford Road, a stack of correctly stored pallets, the Robin perched on top of the parasol, a maintenance man in hi-vis crosses the bridge to collect all of the bagged dog poo and replace the bin liner, a Cuckoo, an alarm on the Granary going off, a lady carrying empty cardboard boxes, two Crows join the exploration of the grass, they ignore the mic and camera tripods, a small black and white moth on my arm, a man with a red t-shirt walking towards the Granary, two men stop for a chat in the lane, a Pied Wagtail. As this was an early morning recording there was a lot of bird sound, in addition to the above, Cuckoo, Goldcrest, Garden Warbler, Mistle Thrush, Marsh Warbler, Greenfinch, Canada Goose, Willow Warbler, Coal Tit, Song Thrush, Dunnock, Chiffchaff, Collared Dove, Blackbird, Goldfinch, Wren, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw and Blackcap.
Today we visit the rare recorded output my beloved teacher, Joan Caplan (15 October 1932 – 19 April 2025), live performances made during her active years as a song recitalist and as an opera and oratorio singer. We hear her complete performances of Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Peggy Glanville-Hicks, the Cinco canciones negras by Xavier Montsalvatge, and the Zigeunerlieder of Johannes Brahms, as well as songs by Gustav Mahler from the German folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn and arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Hasse, and Donizetti. This episode constitutes the continuation of a promise that I made to Joan before she died that I would do my utmost to ensure that she never be forgotten for the great teacher and singer that she was. The episode also includes a memorial tribute full of insights and anecdotes that I recorded in her memory last year. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. The forecast was for rain all day but after a period of a few hours with none I headed to Flatford. The clouds are great today and much more Constablesque with a wide variety of greys and shapes. As I was setting up there was some great interaction between some Song Thrushes, and some juvenile Moorhens on the water. Some sightseers taking their photo with the Mill in the background, a Song Thrush again, a lady going past on her mobility scooter, restarting the recording because my alarm went off loudly and stopped the recording! Weird as I thought that the sound must have been coming from someone else's phone before I realised it was from mine! Bees in the Comfrey, a Cuckoo, a couple take a photo, ask me what I was recording and then left straight away, then they came back and asked me if they could see Willy Lott's House from this side of the river, a short rain shower with large drops, so I protect my kit with my cap and a cloth (well prepared!), a lad walking by with his hands in his pockets, the birds stopped singing after the ran, thunder, and now a Blackbird, the Cuckoo again as the wind picks up, the feeling that it's going to lash it down, a man with 2 black Labradors walking past whilst looking at his phone the whole time, a hoverfly by the mic, a Moorhen, precipitation being blow from the willow trees above me, I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation as the wind gusts and the thunder rolls around but the rain holds off, there are no hoards of tourists now as there were last week in the blazing sunshine (so I heard on various platforms), just crows, the storm is moving northward, swathes of cloud, gusts of wind bending the trees, pockets of blue sky now appear between the cloud, lightning to the west, ten seconds away, a Mallard on the mill pond, small spits of rain return as a man power walks past, we exchange nods, a man smoking a cigarette at the back of the Field Studies Centre looking over curiously, the same building that they said was out of bounds and as such I couldn't record from there, wind ripples and rain drops on the water surface, three Magpies landing on the path to forage, there is two minutes to go until the hour is up and the rain is getting heavier, a jogger, the Mallard lands on the wall and stretches out its wings, several times, still some distant thunder and gusts in the trees but fading now, the Magpies chatter in the trees, the Cuckoo returns.

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update, we have three stories for you this week; DJI audited by US-Based Cybersecurity firm OnDefend, a custom FPV drone hits 730 kilometers per hour, and SkyeBrowse rolls out another major product update. Let's get to it.First up this week, DJI released the findings of an independent security assessment conducted by U.S.-based cybersecurity firm OnDefend on May 28, 2026. The assessment evaluated the DJI Air 3S with RC 2 controller and the Matrice 4E with RC Plus 2 Enterprise controller. Test units were procured from retail outlets and dealer stock without pre-notification to DJI.The assessment ran from October 2025 through March 2026 and produced zero critical, high, or medium-risk findings. Specifically, OnDefend reported no evidence of data transmission outside the United States, no backdoors or unauthorized remote access mechanisms, no unexplained radio frequency emissions, and no supply chain tampering or unauthorized hardware modifications. Controllers also resisted jailbreak and firmware modification attempts. Ten low-risk findings and thirteen observations were identified, primarily related to application security configurations, session handling, and wireless hardening. DJI stated it is working to address remaining items in subsequent software releases.DJI cited the findings in connection with its ongoing appeal of its December 2025 inclusion on the FCC Covered List, which was not accompanied by a documented security vulnerability. The release noted that more than 80% of the 1,800-plus state and local law enforcement agencies operating drones use DJI platforms, and that 43% of drone business users surveyed indicated DJI restrictions would have an extremely negative or business-ending impact on operations. This comes just a few weeks after the FCC's request for comment closed on reconsidering DJI's addition to the entity list, prohibiting them from introducing new models in the US.Next up, Australian aerospace engineer Benjamin Biggs just pushed his custom Blackbird drone to an absolutely blistering 730 kilometers per hour, or 454 miles per hour, on a downwind run! Flying back into the wind, the drone hit 640 kilometers per hour, giving it a two-direction average of 685 kilometers per hour, or 426 miles per hour. Unfortunately, this incredible speed run won't count for the record books. The team didn't have accredited Guinness observers on site, the winds were gusting up to 60 kilometers per hour, and the drone didn't land on a clean battery. They also lost one of their two drones at 630 kilometers per hour when the video feed completely dropped out. The team reportedly believes this was caused by the Doppler effect messing with the digital video link as the drone screamed past the pilot. Last up, SkyeBrowse has rolled out a major update to their core videogrammetry engine. If you use their software for 3D modeling, you'll want to pay attention to this. Every plan on their platform now has upgraded accuracy, better texture rendering, and faster tooling at no additional charge. According to their internal benchmarks, there is a 3X improvement in matching accuracy when you combine multiple video sources. They also upgraded their AI Floor Plans, which are now twice as accurate and can be exported from any interior model in about 20 seconds. On top of that, their Image Walkthroughs feature, which lets you navigate through structured spaces using high-quality photos, is now available to everyone for free. That's it for this week, see you next week for Post flight where we'll discuss these stories uncensored, live Q&A on Monday, and News update on Friday! https://www.dji.com/ca/trust-centerhttps://dronexl.co/2026/05/22/blackbird-biggs-730-kmh-drone-speed-record/https://www.skyebrowse.com/news/posts/major-product-update
This week, the witches continue creating their In-Between deck and the cards next up are both WING-ED and very much in need of a card in the middle! Toimittajana on Antti Pilke. Suora lähetys.
In the spring of 1993, a 19-year-old college student walked to the grocery store to buy a root beer and a magazine. She never made it back to her dorm. That same year, a 15-year-old girl rode her brand-new bicycle down a country road in Georgetown, Illinois. Her sister passed her on the road and waved. Thirty minutes later, the bike was lying in the middle of the road. The gravel around it was disturbed. The girl was gone.Their names were Tricia Reitler and Jessica Roach. Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
We've spent a long time glorifying the "hero leader." The sharpest thinker. The one with all the answers. The person everyone turns to when it's time to make the call. But constant change is pushing a different kind of leader to the forefront. The system designer. A leader who puts more energy into workflows, decision paths, and team rhythm so fewer hard calls boomerang back to them. In this episode, Drew talks with Dan Lowden (Blackbird.AI), Katrina Klier (Sage Strategy Group), and Chris Pieper (ADP) about why this new model of leadership matters now. With AI reshaping marketing and the pace only getting faster, teams need more than a smart CMO in the middle of everything. They need a way of operating that can keep up. In this episode: Dan shares how his team turns expert insight into a steady stream of high-value content, helping a five-person team operate at scale. Podfic Narration Time – Chapter 1 of “Blackbird” by sorryitsmyfirstdayonearthSorry likes to think of herself as the director of her Reader Inserts rather than inhabiting the starring role. And, man, this story is epic! It's Sam/Reader in the Old West, heavily influenced by the show Deadwood. Narrating the first chapter was such a treat. Definitely going on my TBR list!~ SandraRead the story here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/66220714/chapters/170698717~~~~~Supernatural FandomRated MatureSam Winchester/ReaderSummary:1880: Blackbird, Dakota territory, is a lawless frontier town. Progress is coming, but for now, whiskey is poured, whores are run and anyone who has a disagreement can settle it with a revolver. Then Samuel Wesson comes to town and to your joint, the Cathouse. He's kind but mysterious, a man with a dark past. He befriends you, the local madam, in his attempt to find his place in Blackbird. Except that Sam's six foot four of righteous trouble, and you have anything but friendly feelings for him.But the past isn't past, and soon Sam's shadows follow him to town – his brother, his old crew and with them, the cold injustice of the open road.~~~~~Podfic sound effect credit used: horse_galloping.wav by telezon -- https://freesound.org/s/368583/ -- License: Creative Commons 0~~~~~Listen to all of Idling in the Impala's Ramble On Podfics by visiting the https://archiveofourown.org/series/2964867 Podfics in the Impala series.

On this episode, find out what Jason Mamoa smells like! Find out what Scarlet is harboring in her bathroom! Speaking of harbors, that is what the episode is all about this week- the witches discuss what the card could be between the Tower and The Star. No surprises, y'all, a lighthouse is the PERFECT symbol for where this yet-to-exist card falls. If you are jumping from your own personal tower, the best thing you could possibly hope for is, well, hope - but before you reach the hope that the Star brings, Blackbird and Scarlet talk about what could lead you to a more gentle landing. The lighthouse is a perfect image for leading you to safer shores. While you sail the freeway seas on Monday, may your commute be full of magic (because you are checking out this episode!)
John's opening monologue first discusses the House somehow passing a bill extending Temporary Protected Status for Haitian refugees in the immigration program. Then, he talks about JD Vance addressing a Turning Point USA event in Georgia, where he defended Trump's aggressive policies in Iran and addressed supporters amid low, sparse turnout and interruptions. The speech was marked by clashes with hecklers, including a tense exchange over Middle East policy, while focusing on conservative themes for a mostly empty arena. Next, John speaks with Tyneadrian Fleming. She's an inventor and entrepreneur, and the founder of Blackbird Smart Innovations. With a background in corrections and home care, she was inspired to create life-saving wearable technology designed to protect seniors, children, and vulnerable communities. Her patented Blackbird smart devices focus on accessibility, safety, and real-world impact. Then lastly, he interviews Dr. Mansi Kotwal who's a pediatrician and board member of Healthcare for Action. Having a background in public health, she's committed to serving and advocating for her patients not only through individual care but also through community outreach programs, research, and lobbying for Congress.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Intergenerational relationships take center stage in two new children's books. First, in The One About the Blackbird, a little boy learns to play guitar from his grandfather and they form a deep bond over music. In today's episode, author Melanie Florence and illustrator Matt James join NPR's Ayesha Rascoe to discuss their collaboration and shared love of The Beatles. Then, And They Walk On deals with a heavy topic: Where do our loved ones go after they die? Author Kevin Maillard and illustrator Rafael López spoke with Rascoe about “walking on” and incorporating Seminole culture in their story. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedaySee pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

This week on Listening Lyrics, it's the Alex Jenkins Trio! These Sacramento musicians are among the most talented in the region, truly creative, and promise music full of beautiful surprises. The trio's latest record, Black Bird, received a four-star review in All About Jazz and is being played on radio stations across the country. Due to his in-depth study of the music of different cultures, Alex's playing transcends musical traditions and boundaries. His expression of rhythm is heavily influenced by his study of Tabla (a North Indian classical percussion instrument). As a result, he has become known for his creative approach to music and his unique ability to fuse rhythmic ideas from various disciplines into one cohesive sound. It’s not business as usual this time on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell, as Herlinda presents Beatles and Brews today. She has had this playlist on her main fridge for about 6 years. What’s more, she has such a collection of beers that she can line up the labels to match the songs for today’s show. The show begins with two Beatles tunes, She Loves You and I Want You / She’s So Heavy. Herlinda is a Beatles superfan. She knows Pete Best, who was the drummer for The Beatles before Ringo joined the band. Herlinda even has a signed picture with him from when he played in Petaluma on tour. Pete’s mother Mona Best bet on a horse named Never Say Die to win the 1954 Epsom Derby, at 33-1 odds. (sorry, audio garbled at 8:00) She used the winnings to buy the house where they built The Casbah Coffee Club in the basement. Pete’s brother Roag still runs tours at the original Casbah location. She Loves You goes with A View From The Top from Five Boroughs Brewing in Brooklyn. They brewed this beer to commemorate the refurbishing of the Empire State Building. It matches the Beatles arrival in NY in 1964 on Ed Sullivan and at Shea Stadium, and all the later New York connections. Daedalus asks Herlinda how she became such a big Beatles fan. Herlinda’s dad was in the Navy, and they were stationed for a while at Hunter’s Point Shipyard. Candlestick Park was nearby, and her mom wasn’t at the Beatles concert, but she said she could hear the crowd screaming. When her dad was in the Far East in the Navy, there where places where he could record albums onto reel-to-reel. Herlinda had an Akai reel-to-reel tape player. He gave her an audio documentary history of the Beatles that she listened to it over and over again. Black is Beautiful and Blackbird Herlinda was doing her math homework one day while living at Hamilton AFB in Novato. She was listening to KRQR San Francisco when the news came in of John Lennon’s murder. She immediately started her reel-to-reel recorder and captured the local coverage from all the local radio stations. Herlinda opens a beer called Black is Beautiful. She pairs it with the Beatles song Blackbird and points out Paul McCartney’s story of its origin. A bird means a girl in British English and Paul had seen stories of young black girls having to be escorted to school in the American south, and he wrote the song to describe them. The Black Is Beautiful beer started from an African American brewer Marcus Baskerville in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The song Tomorrow Never Knows, with its Indian sitars, suggests an IPA, India Pale Ale. There is more beer and Beatles music than we have time for in one show, so we will have to revisit this topic. Before we end this episode, Herlinda opens a Ukrainian style Golden Ale flavored with coriander. The BJCP judging guidelines recently admitted this Ukrainian style to their catalog. Herlinda suggests the song Golden Slumbers, for the Ukrainian ale. We will have to do a 2.0. We didn’t even get to the English beers.
Watch on YouTube Aerospace AudioIn this episode, we welcome Matt Gilder to the Worship Keys podcast, with sponsorship from Aerospace Audio, to discuss Matt's journey from growing up in Southeast Texas playing church piano to touring and producing, including nearly 20 years as keyboardist for Chris Tomlin since a 2006 session at Blackbird. Matt shares how ear training and the Nashville Number System shaped his musicianship, his early band Among Thorns, and how learning tracks and software opened doors. He breaks down his live rig evolution (Roland V-Piano, controller, MainStage, Ableton, redundancy, and iConnect solutions), offers advice on choosing inspiring gear, and emphasizes simplicity, listening, and playing for the room. They discuss handling big-stage energy, building trust and longevity with an artist, prioritizing creating and finishing music, and maintaining faith amid public ministry failures by focusing on integrity and healthy community.Matt GilderAerospaceSupport the showThanks for listening! It comes out this Eastertide with Solum Literary Press.Today on the show, Liv joins us to talk about faithfulness, backyard birds, writing poetry, the goodness of God, and so much more. Well, Spring is trying it's best to Spring where Blackbird is, and it's nearly freaking summer where Scarlet is - it is the time of hockey playoffs, cleaning all your things, and perhaps starting (or finishing!) a project that's been lingering. On this episode, Scarlet asks Blackbird about a project she has had in the works for a long time and is finally bringting to fruition - her Tarot of Sound! Take a little peak into Blackbird's goth AF psyche as she realizes she cannot use every sad song for every card because there are also many joyful and exuberant cards for which she has had to...ahem! expand her catalog. Scarlet helps her out with a few placements, and the witches talk about some of the music they love. Get out that vinegar and whatever else you use to clean, put the headphones on and go to town on those baseboards! (Kidding. Baseboards are for stubbing your toe on, not cleaning.) Enjoy!
This week's guest didn't grow up dreaming of restaurant kitchens -- but after finding her way into culinary school and landing an internship at Blackbird, she's become a true mainstay. Under the mentorship of friend-of-the-pod Chef David Posey at Blackbird and later Elske, Chef Tayler Ploshehanski developed her voice through rigor, repetition, and a deep respect for craft. Now, as chef de cuisine at Creepies -- her new restaurant with David and Anna Posey -- she's stepping fully into that voice, translating years of experience into a playful, deeply technical take on Midwestern French cooking. This episode, we're talking kitchen pranks gone too far, the quiet art of menu development under someone else's vision, how to perfectly poach shrimp, and what it actually takes to earn trust in a Michelin-level kitchen -- and so much more.
In an episode where they've never needed his bullshit X-Men knowledge more, Zammit's out sick. But never fear true believer as he's been replaced by our good friend Darcy Smith from Studio Folly! Who knows NOTHING about X-Men. He didn't even know Wolverine aka Logan aka James Howlett bones were coated in adamantium. You all better come for him in the comments. They didn't even mention the time after Wolverine got the adamantium ripped from his bones where he turned into a full on cave man, wore a bandana and had no nose. Nor do the mention the time of how he got his adamantium back. You see, at the time, and unbeknownst to the rest of the X-Men, Apocalypse had kidnapped (man-napped? mutant-napped?) Wolverine and pitted him up against Sabretooth (who had been enhanced with adamantium from the arms of the evil mutant Cyber (he had arms coated in adamantium)) to see who would become Death (one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse). Wolverine defeated Sabretooth believing that only bad would come out of Sabretooth becoming Death and so Apocalypse sucked off the adamantium from Sabretooth to give to Wolverine. Even his teeth were adamantium at this point, but that didn't last. He was then made to attack the X-Men and he was all wrapped up in a red headscarf thing and wielded a big scimitar for reasons that are unclear. Probably to hide the fact that no one was supposed to know he was Wolverine as there was another Wolverine on the team, but not like his clone or his son or his clone of a clone, this one was a Skrull (one of those shapeshifting aliens) who was pretending to be Wolverine for some reason that escapes me. Did Apocalypse put him on the team or was that just a sweet coincidence? This was during Apocalypse: The Twelve storyline, which was something that was teased for so long in the comics but ended up being just a terrible mess where Apocalypse wanted to get sucked off into the body of Nate Grey (an alternate reality and all powerful son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers who was kicking it sweet in the 616 universe who later went on to become a mutant shaman, then become a bit of everyone, then he made an alternate reality where sex was forbidden which makes sense as he was tricked by an evil Madelyne Pryor from a different alternate dimension to have sex, which is weird as Madelyne is a clone of Jean Grey, his mum) but Scott Summers pushed him out the way and took his spot, so Apocalypse ended up sucking off Cyclops and then they merged into one guy and then choofed off for a bit to finally come back to cheat on his wife. So you guys better come for them in the comments. Didn't even know their plane was called the Blackbird.
