Bulgaria is famous for its yoghurt, a fermented milk food full of ‘good' bacteria that has kept hungry Bulgarians healthy for over 4000 years. Inspired by that, and a question from a CrowdScience listener in California USA, Marnie Chesterton and Caroline Steel are immersing themselves in Bulgarian culture with a programme about Bulgarian cultures, recorded at the 2025 Sofia Science Festival. So, are the ‘live' cultures in fermented foods actually alive by the time you eat them, and how can you tell? If you can eat the mould in blue cheese, can you eat the mould on cheese that isn't supposed to be mouldy? Is traditional food really better for you? And if you put a drop of vanilla into a litre of milk, how come it all tastes of vanilla? Marnie and Caroline are joined by a chemist who was a member of Sofia University's ‘Rapid Explosion Force', a food technologist with a PhD in sponge cakes and a Professor of molecular biology who says that we contain so much bacteria that we're only 10% human. With questions on food from around the world and from the audience in Sofia, Marnie and Caroline will be digesting the answers, as well as some local delicacies. Presenter: Marnie Chesterton & Caroline Steel Producer: Emily Knight Series Producer: Ben Motley

This is an uplifting & inspiring conversation with a man who at nearly 80 is still competing, testing himself, being consistent & paying it forward by helping others who want to follow in his journey of strength.

There needs to bean ongoing commitment to practicing one's leadership to get the timeand amount of deliberate practice to become that expert leader.""The lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of leadership development in for-profit organizations and corporations is unsettling, to say the least.""Sending a changed person back into an unchanged system tends to be an exercise in futility. "It's what kept me going. It also drove me crazy at times, but I think it is what kept me in the sport, kept me pushing " - Eva Goodisson, Professional Triathlete. Eva represents New Zealand in Triathlon, currently gearing up for the Rome World Cup this Saturday Oct 5th. Starting out as a competitive swimmer and seeing success as a teen, Eva took an opportunity to run D1 Track at UC Davis in California USA, and is now is bringing all her skills together as an elite triathlete. Graduating in 2021, she went full throttle into her pro-athlete pursuit. It paid off when she got a spot as Reserve for the Commonwealth Games that same year, was introduced to the Elite Team, and propelled into competing on the world circuit. When a neural back injury came out of no where during a routine gym session just after her best placing, Eva began a tough two-year recovery journey which saw her strengthen her mind in ways never before anticipated. 2024 has seen her truly excel in her competitions already, and it is a gift to learn how she managed to navigate that time. Some wisdom Eva took away from her time in California, was that a diverse life full with multiple areas of focus away from sport, made her a better athlete. Balance is key. Seattle, Washington resident Tom Vandermolen is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning him a trip to Hollywood for a week-long master-class workshop, an awards event and his winning story will be published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40. Tom Vandermolen started out life as a military brat, born in Japan to a US Navy sailor and a Japanese mother, but raised primarily in the American South. A childhood of books, comics, movies, excellent English grades, and mediocre math grades resulted in a collection of short story rejections and, inexplicably, a physics degree. After college, what should have been a short enlistment as a nuclear submarine officer somehow became a twenty-two-year career as a Navy intelligence officer. No one is sure how any of this happened. Tulsa, Oklahoma resident Arthur Haywood is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest earning him a trip to Hollywood for a week-long master-class workshop, an awards event and his winning art will be published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40. Arthur Haywood was born in 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Creating graffiti murals as a teenager with his teacher, Pose 2, inspired him to share his work publicly in murals. Having a father who has organized reading camps as a State Senator, and a mother who has been president of the local school board showed him the influence of reading on the lives of students. Being an avid reader, who judged books by their covers, led him to sharing stories he loves with others through illustration. He is focused on making book covers, murals for libraries and schools to engage youth in reading. Portland, Oregon resident Steven Bentley is a winner in the L. Kal M writes from the crowded outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she grew up with the lofty ambition of someday working in an office and maybe even getting to wear a tie. She spent most of her time reading instead of playing outside. Eventually she figured out that all those books had to be written by someone, and that maybe she could even become one of those someones. So she got a respectable degree from a respectable university, and then immediately decided to disappoint her parents by announcing she'd write stories instead of contracts. This is her first time actually selling one.

“Quite noisy rain on the ocean…”
In this episode, Clare is in conversation with Katie Sharpe, an artist who lives in California. Katie met her husband in the UK and moved to the USA with him, just 5 months before lockdown. Initially, Katie could not work which massively impacted her sense of self-worth and her relationships. She explains how she successfully navigated that situation, made friends, and set up her own business. This episode also contains some great information for those who are using the Green Card route to move to the USA. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you move to be with your romantic partner, you will likely be completely dependent on them for a time. This change can be stressful for you and for them. Being prepared for that situation will make things easier. Often, moving to another country challenges who you are. Everything shifts. Home is where the person you live is. If your heart feels at home, the rest will follow. Do your research. Understand what paperwork you need for each process and how to get it. To some extent, this will inform the order in which you do things. Going to the laundromat is a surprisingly good way to make friends. Walking the dog is also an easy way to start to connect with others. Slow down, it takes time to establish yourself and get everything into place. Who you are and the way society sees you does change when you move to another country. Be ready for that. At first, you won´t fit in. Often, there will be a period when you can´t legally work. It is possible to start your own business in the USA while waiting for your Green Card. BEST MOMENTS ‘Home becomes a person and not a place. ´ ‘Even though it was hard, I now have a much better appreciation of life.' ‘You are reminded every day that you are British, which is not something you think about at home.' ABOUT THE HOST Clare has moved countries many times throughout her life, from China to Taiwan, Nigeria, Zambia, and the USA. She has also travelled the world for various businesses and now wishes to impart her advice to others to save them time, money, and energy. Clare follows three principles central to her endeavours. First, she looks outward internationally, working with people overseas or of different nationalities. Second, she is obsessed with communication, having learned French, German and Mandarin Chinese. She also teaches English and works as an editor for others' work. Clare is passionate about making a difference through her coaching in the world of personal development. CONTACT METHOD www.kayproofreading.com www.linkedin.com/in/clarekay https://www.facebook.com/KayProofreading Podcast Description When you move for a new job, to live with someone after a long-distance relationship or to explore the benefits of a new lifestyle, moving countries occurs as an opportunity, but it still might be a bumpy ride. Moving Countries 101 presents a paradox of moving to a new destination, but it being all about the journey: the ongoing experience of having moved countries. Clare and her guests share the human stories of an ancient undertaking in modern times. Moving countries prompts change, and change provokes being unsettled emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. On all these fronts, moving countries promotes observation, opportunity, and discovery.

Interview with Tom Mayes - Integrated Equine Therapies I'm excited to announce an interview with Tom Mayes from California USA.I've been aware of Tom for a while but after listening to his story on a recent podcast I realised I knew very little of about him, however, everything he talked about is right on my wave length. It was only when one of my listeners mentioned him in a message that I thought why don't I ask him if he would like to be a guest on my podcast and I'm very delighted he said yes.Tom has a wealth of knowledge and I was so struck by how many similarities we had, from an energy point of view. It felt like I was talking to an old friend (Which to be honest, I feel with most of my guests) So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this informative, enlightening and deep conversation about all things horses and human and so much more. Tom Mayes.Tom is Clinician, Educator and owner of Integrated Equine Therapies.Integrated Equine Therapies is a highly effective approach that addresses the core causes of lameness, metabolic and emotional dysfunction. He integrates cutting edge proven modalities to resolve acute and chronic issues at their deepest level thereby restoring normal function.Tom is formally trained in Osteopathy, Applied Kinesiology, CranioSacral, Acupressure TCM, Myofascial Release and Reiki. He has studied with world-class professionals in proven ancient therapies and modern cutting-edge modalities. He is also the creator of “Integrated Equine Therapies,” a highly effective approach that addresses the core causes of lameness, metabolic and emotional dysfunctions. He was born and raised in the mountains of the western United States. He continually explores weaving technique with intuition, integrating the left brain with the right brain and merging Newtonian physics with quantum physics. Regardless of the approach, however, it all comes from the heart and trusting one's intuitive intelligence.Tom has a martial arts background, degrees in Environmental Science and Medical Anthropology and in his previous career, spent 20 years teaching science and math to children. From the first faint signals from Sputnik in 1957 to an estimated half a million satellites orbiting the earth in 2030 - yeah, we were shocked too! The effects on earth based astronomy could be devastating. And then there are all the things that can go wrong, like collisions and the build up of aluminum and other particles in the high atmosphere from burned-up satellites. On the bright side, there is growing cooperation from satellite companies, in mitigating the reflective properties of satellites. Dr Tregloan-Reed completed his Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Keele, Staffordshire, UK and then went on to a two year postdoctoral research fellowship at NASA Ames Research center, California USA. In 2018, Dr Tregloan-Reed relocated to Northern Chile and his primary research is in exoplanets, specializing in exoplanets which orbit active host stars, to better understand how stellar activity can impact our ability to detect and characterize exoplanetary systems. Since the start of 2020 and after the launch of Darksat, SpaceX's first attempt to dim their satellites, Dr Tregloan-Reed has been leading an international network of telescopes in performing brightness measurements of satellite constellations such as Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon Kuiper. This survey is collecting data to allow astronomers to develop mitigation software and to ascertain the impact of satellite constellations to the quality of the night sky and Astronomy.
Bill Owens established Buffalo Bill's Brewery as the first brewpub in America since Prohibition on August 2, 1983. His book How to Build a Small Brewery (1993) opened the door to the brewpub movement and he kind of reinvented Pumpkin Ale. Owens sold Buffalo Bill's in 1994 continuing to publish American Brewer Magazine which he sold in 2001. Owens used the proceeds from the magazine's sale to photograph America and this journey planted the seeds for his next venture, the American Distilling Institute, and Distiller Magazine. ADI was established in 2003 as a professional membership organization and publishing house to promote the art of craft distilling. Artifacts from Buffalo Bill's Brew Pub were acquired by the Smithsonian Institute and sit alongside Owens' photographs previously collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and two National Endowment for the Arts grants. Bill's current book is The Delco Years, a dystopian novel of life after a pandemic kills everyone but people who drink unpasteurized beer. He is also working on his memoir and a book of his collected poetry...
“It's someone's 50th wedding anniversary. They're celebrating a new baby. We've had surprise engagements. We've had people mourning the loss of someone they loved. Every human emotion and experience you can imagine is being shared around this table. And I feel it is this huge responsibility we have to care for that, to nurture it. To create lifelong memories for our guests.” We're in great company with Sherry Villanueva, Founder and Managing Partner of ACME Hospitality celebrating 10 years of creating happiness for her guests and teams alike, with innovative food & beverage concepts and boutique hotels sprinkled around California. Over this time, Sherry has curated a village of hospitality loving hosts, gastro-geeks, delightful diners and ravenous regulars throughout Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, the Sierra Nevada Foothills and soon San Juan Capistrano. In this episode, Sherry delves into the deep connection she has with her two historic hotels in California's Gold Country, the National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City and the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley, lovingly restored by local artists, designers and craftspeople. Listen as she invites us all to experience 165 years of history and welcome a change in the seasons, as we say goodbye to our Indian summer and hello to a warm festive winter. Top Takeaways [1:45] Sherry spent a career traveling the world tracking trends, learning a lot about human behavior before founding ACME Hospitality for “people passionate about caring for people.” [6:40] The moment the stars aligned for Sherry happened to be in her own backyard of Santa Barbara, CA when she was tapped to revitalize a neighborhood called “The Funk Zone.” [10:30] A look back at 10 years of ACME Hospitality includes lots of laughs, a lot of tears, and learning “how to pace and embrace the chaos.” [13:20] Get to know Santa Barbara's culinary scene with ACME Hospitality through The Lark, the restaurant that started it all, Loquita, serving authentic Spanish tapas, La Paloma Cafe, celebrating Santa Maria traditions, The Helena Avenue Bakery, where everything is scratch-made, Lucky Penny, spinning out wood-fired pizzas, Tyger Tyger, with its vegan Thai cuisine, Santa Barbara Wine Collective, a tasting room featuring small family run wineries, and Pearl Social, a music and cocktail lounge. [18:20] When Sherry set off to restore two historical boutique hotels in California's Gold Country, she wanted to ensure a deep sense of community - stewarding culturally significant properties, supporting local purveyors, investing in local non-profits, and connecting to nature. [26:35] The National Exchange Hotel with its Victorian era spirit, is full of rich colors and patterns, opulent furnishings, lovingly restored original features, and mysterious details around every corner that continue to surprise guests as they explore further. [33:40] Sherry explains how two towns such as Nevada City and Grass Valley, which may be just minutes apart, can feel worlds away. Nevada City, full of true craftsmen, sets the scene for a Hallmark movie, while Grass Valley with its rugged edge, is the heart and grit that built the industry. [38:40] The Holbrooke Hotel, where modern luxuries blend seamlessly with a historically unique, rustic-yet-refined, one-of-a-kind property, features the oldest saloon in California serving patrons for over 165 years. This week we come back to the USA with Hanieh Sigari, a serial entrepreneur with a lifelong passion for the aging industry. Hanieh shares how her interest in longevity started at a young age when she befriended elderly neighbors and worked in a nursing home. This early passion led her to found multiple healthcare businesses focused on aging issues over her career. Hanieh goes into detail about her current company Qyral, a telehealth platform launched to make treatments for aging more accessible. Qyral offers prescription skincare, weight loss products, and educational resources through a direct sales model. Hanieh explains how this unique approach empowers women financially by compensating consultants directly. She also opens up about lessons learned from past ventures that informed Qyral's scalable business model. Here is what we explored: - Founding multiple healthcare companies focused on aging, including a home health care company. - Qyral; a telehealth platform that offers prescription skincare, weight loss products, and other longevity solutions. - Qyral's business model focuses on empowering women financially through a direct sales/affiliate model that compensates consultants directly rather than spending on ads. - The goal is to make treatments for aging more accessible and help people live longer, healthier lives through education, products, and services. - Hanieh aims to continue expanding Qyral's offerings like hormone therapy to treat the whole person and help prevent diseases of aging. Hanieh Sigari is an entrepreneur, biochemist, anti-aging industry disruptor, and mom. I wasn't sure if I'd publish this as a podcast episode considering I'm exploring the new territory of just collecting information from health care providers that can support my mission to help people navigate the stigma that comes with not only a herpes, but any STI diagnosis. As I learn more, I learn more. While I filter and curate this information from them to you, maybe you'll have my same experience and growth while I'm learning out loud here through these conversations. So I decided to get their consent to share these recordings that aren't quite podcast episodes, but conversations with providers on their challenges and perspectives as they treat patients. Dr. Lourdes here is the first interview in that series. I look forward to sharing with you here. Lourdes Mantecón-Garza obtained her medical degree in 1982, at the medical school of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, in Monterrey, Mexico. She continued with specialty studies in Internal Medicine at the SSA Metropolitan Hospital in the same city in 1988. She completed a master's degree in business administration at the University of Texas (MBA, UT-PanAmerican) in 2005. She continue with studies on human sexuality at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Human Sexuality (IASHS) and at the Buehler Institute, both in California USA. Dr. Mantecón is a certified clinical sexologist by the American College of Sexologists International and is also a certified sexuality counselor by the American Association of Sexuality, Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) also in the US. Dr. Mantecón -Garza has fellow studies in women's sexuality by the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH). She is a visiting professor for human sexuality readings at different educational institutions in Mexico (UANL) and the United States (UTRGV school of medicine and family residency). She has presented research papers at national congresses in Mexico and the United States and world ISSM (International Society for Sexual Medicine) 2018, WAS (World Association for Sexual health) 2019 and ISSSWSH 2020. In addition to her practice, Dr. Mantecón Garza decided to write reference books that could be available to the population without the difficulty of medical technicalities. His first work, “The diet and the diabetic”, was published by Editorial Trillas in 1996, the second is “Healthy Sexuality” in the process of printing with the same publisher. She is dedicated to work as sexuality counselor at her office in McAllen Texas, she also offers services through telemedicine in English and Spanish.
