A member of the Gracie family, he is the grandson of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, and the second-eldest son of Grandmaster Rorion Gracie, who was among some of the first family members to bring Gracie jiu-jitsu to the United States along with Carley Gracie, and Carlson Gracie. Rener is the husband of actress, model and former pro-wrestler Eve Torres. Rener has spent over twenty-five years at the Gracie Academy studying under Rorion and Helio Gracie. Rener and his brother, Ryron Gracie created Gracie University, an online martial arts learning center, and developed distance learning packages for their proprietary courses. He is also the founder and CEO of Quikflip Apparel, a clothing company that specializes in garments that convert into backpacks. Rener Gracie is a 4th-degree black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a head instructor at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy and co-creator of Gracie University, the world's largest online jiu-jitsu training program. He is the grandson of Helio Gracie, the creator of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and the second eldest son of Rorion Gracie, the father of Gracie jiu-jitsu in the United States. He is also the creator and founder of Quikflip apparel.  Raised from birth to teach jiu-jitsu, Rener has spent over twenty years on the mats at the Gracie Academy studying the art under Rorion and Helio's tutelage. This week our guest is Jason Beck, the founder and owner of TYR Tactical located in Peoria, Arizona.  TYR Tactical provides tactical gear to law enforcement and military all over the world and has seen consistent growth under Jason’s leadership.     In our conversation, he provides a very frank description of his life growing up in an abusive home and discusses the individuals and experiences which have helped to shape him into who he is today.  We cover his youth, his time in the US Marine Corps, his decade of work with the Gracie family at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and then into his current vocation which mixes his love of design and his passion for innovation and combative techniques.

And the Gracie family has played a central role in this martial art's precipitous rise. My guest today is a member of the Gracie family, the head instructor of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and the co-creator of Gracie University, an online jiu-jitsu program. His name is Rener Gracie, and you may have seen the videos we made with him on our YouTube Channel a few years ago. Today, Rener walks us through the origins of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, beginning with his grandfather Helio, and how a martial art born in Japan ended up being reshaped in Brazil. He then shares how his father helped develop the UFC as a way to promote the efficacy of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but why there's a big difference between sport BJJ and self-defense BJJ, and why BJJ is such an effective real world martial art. We end by talking about the mindset shift that occurs when you learn how to defend yourself, and how the confidence you gain from learning jiu-jitsu carries over into other aspects of life. Miami Beach. Warm water, beautiful beaches, perfect weather, amazing food. It's also home to one of the founding families of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Valente Brothers are based in Florida and have been part of the Jiu Jitsu scene since the very beginning. From their beginnings as part of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in Brazil dating back to the 1950's their work speaks for itself. Their new headquarters in North Miami Beach, FL is very, very impressive and is absolutely worth a visit to anyone interested in learning more about the history and tradition of the beautiful art of Jiu Jitsu.
