I went to Cuba knowing it wouldn't be a typical vacation, but I wasn't prepared for just how profoundly it would move me. To every question I asked my tour guide, the answer was almost always, “It's complicated.” They say you will leave Cuba with less answers and more questions— here are some of mine: How can something be equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming? Where is the boundary between suffering and resilience? How does history encapsulate both truth and fabrications? Why do we cling to binary thinking when life is a spectrum of endless complexities? How can humans be simultaneously broken and whole, like mosaics made of shattered multitudes? Cuba was a lesson in coexistence—where beauty and struggle, joy and pain live side by side. It reminded me that we, too, are complex and layered, yet capable of holding contradictions within us. I hope you get to experience this beautiful island one day too. Mentioned In This Episode... In this episode we discuss a timeless topic but we are recording it in the context of the new year. It is early January, a time when people are typically thinking about their goals and intentions for the new year. Having habits, goals, etc. isn't inherently a bad thing! But it becomes tricky when we think we can somehow be “better” people. There is a prevalent thought within Christianity that our faith is supposed to make us better people. In this episode Laura and Ethan talk about resolutions and how they might relate to our faith. There's a not so polite saying about teaching music and music teachers that goes like this: If you can, play. If you can't, teach. That is what jazz legend Ellis Marsalis once said to a Detroit drummer who was considering becoming a music teacher. I'm talking about drummer, educator, producer and band leader Clarence Penn. Fortunately, Clarence did not take it to heart, eventually acquiring a master's in music education from Rutgers University. It was also to the benefit of future musicians who became Clarence's students. In this episode, Clarence Penn and I engage in deep reflection on jazz and jazz music instruction. He started playing music with the drum set influenced by his drummer neighbor Ricky Hudson around eight years old. In 1986, while still in high school, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy where Clarence focused on classical percussion aiming to be a timpanist, but later eventually committed to jazz in high school after meeting NEA Jazz Master, trumpeter, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Music Director, Wynton Marsalis. He started studying at the University of Miami in Florida in 1986 but transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University which is when he began working with the great Ellis Marsalis. The conversation navigates his brief stint with trumpet, his preference for jazz over classical due to its broader voice and creativity and reflects on the evolving definition of jazz. The discussion also delves into his teaching philosophy, emphasizing individualized attention, deliberate practice, and the importance of being a well-rounded person. What Ellis Marsalis said about teaching, he later retracted when Clarence told him he was pursuing a master's at Rutgers in music education. He said, according to Clarence, “…that those who can play, teach,” thus giving Clarence his blessing. Clarence Penn also talks about various influences and collaborations, his views on the business of being a musician, and his expressive performance style. He mentions his project with the 2025 Grammy nominated American Patchwork Quartet, its diverse cultural influences, and explains his latest album 'Behind the Voice', which pays homage to drummers who have significantly impacted music. His resume more so lays out his career as a jazz musician than a teacher of percussion instruments, performing with Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Stanley Clark, Betty Carter, Christian Sands, Lakecia Benjamin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Kurt Elling, among many other highly accomplished musicians. He concludes by discussing the importance of teaching as therapy and the rewarding relationships with students. In this episode, we'll listen to three tracks of music, thanks to Origin Records. Two will come from Clarence Penn's latest project, Behind the Voice, released in 2024, more so a R&B/soul sound that has enormously brilliant drumming and keyboards by Clarence. The third track comes from his 2014 recording, Monk: The Lost Files, a highly acclaimed release that revisits some of the most memorable compositions by jazz legend Thelonious Monk. You will hear the first song just prior to the conversation opening. 1. “Send One Your Love” (Steve Wonder)-Behind the Voice-3:15; Clarence Penn-drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Aaron Marcellus-vocals; The second track will play at about 31 minutes into the program. 2. “Hackensack”: Monk: The Lost Files; Chad Lefkowitz-Brown - Saxes; Donald Vega-Piano; Yasushi Nakamura - Acoustic & Electric Bass; Clarence Penn - Drums, producer-arranger. The third song will close the conversation. 3. “You Are” (Clarence Penn, Tyrone Corbett), Behind the Voice -3:52; Clarence Penn—drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Chelsea Jackson-vocals; Yasushi Nakamura-bass Thank you for listening. I know there are many podcasts for you to enjoy so it means a great deal to me that you are spending time with this conversation.

Many people want to know how to be a better person. In today's episode, I discuss the implications from one of my favorite psychological studies, which reveals the unexpected driver of kindness. In general, it is those with some measure of prosperity -- of having an abundance of resources above and beyond what they need for their own personal use -- who are most likely to actually be of service to others. Ultimately, one of the best ways to help others is -- paradoxically -- to first help yourself. Resolving to “try harder” doesn't make us look more like Jesus. But the flip side of the coin is also true—falling into passivity doesn't form us in Christlikeness. Yet Jesus casts a vision about living as whole-souled apprentices of love because he intends to help us become like him. Tune in for this episode of Soul Talks as Bill and Kristi discuss praying the Apprentice Prayer with the intention of living like Jesus. This practice will enthrall you with the vision of his life in the Gospels and help you become like him little by little through the power of the Spirit.Resources for this Episode:Your Best Life in Jesus' Easy Yoke: Rhythms of Grace to De-Stress and Live EmpoweredJourney of the Soul: A Practical Guide to Emotional and Spiritual GrowthAttend a Soul Shepherding Institute RetreatDonate to Support Soul Shepherding and Soul Talks
Does parenting make you a better person? Can it improve your life? Neuroscientist Erik Hoel makes the self-interested case for parenting arguing that it makes you less jaded and more heartbroken (in a good way) for how you experience the world. Listen as new father Hoel speaks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the universal and particular truths surrounding parenting, and why the perception presented by the media is often at odds with our own experience. Topics include different parenting styles and their effects, how parents shape children's personalities and preferences, and the famous children's books that both men love and hate. The conversation closes with a discussion of the reliability of recent studies condemning homeschooling.
Relationships are a mix of mutual values. That means listening first and then gently telling how you feel. Respect always comes first.

When goods and truths are able to penetrate Arcana Coelestia 6829... When a man is in temptation, he is beset round by falsities and evils which impede the influx of light from the Divine, that is, the influx of truth and good, and then the man is as it were in darkness. Darkness in the other life is nothing else than this besetment by falsities, for these take away the light from the man who is in temptation, and thus the perception of consolation by truths. But when the man emerges from temptation, then the light appears with its spiritual heat, that is, truth with its good, and from this he has gladness after anxiety. This is the morning which in the other life follows the night. The reason why good is then perceived, and truth appears, is that after temptation truth and good penetrate toward the interiors, and there take root. For when a man is in temptation, he is as it were in hunger for good, and in thirst for truth; and therefore when he emerges he draws in good as a hungry man devours food, and receives truth as a thirsty man imbibes drink. Moreover, when light from the Divine appears, falsities and evils are removed, and when these are removed, the way is opened for truth and good to penetrate more interiorly. These are the reasons why after temptations the good of love appears with its light from the Lord. That after the obscurity and anxiety of temptations, brightness and gladness appear, is known to all in the other life, because it is there a common occurrence. Infernal/hellish proprium AC 3812 [2] As regards man's own(proprium) in general it is of two kinds, one infernal and the other heavenly; that which is infernal is received by man from hell, and that which is heavenly from heaven, that is, through heaven from the Lord; for all evil, as well as all the derivative falsity, flows in from hell; and all good, and the derivative truth, from the Lord. This is known to men from the doctrine of faith, but scarcely one in ten thousand believes it. For this reason man appropriates to himself or makes his own the evil which flows in from hell, and the good which flows in from the Lord does not affect him, consequently is not imputed to him. The reason why man does not believe that evil flows in from hell, and good from the Lord, is that he is in the love of self, which love carries this with it, insomuch that it is exceedingly indignant when it is said that everything inflows. This therefore is the reason why all that is man's own is nothing but evil (see n. 210, 215, 694, 731, 874-876, 987, 1023, 1044, 1047). But that man believes that evil is from hell and good from the Lord comes from the fact that he is not in the love of self, but in love toward his neighbor and in love to the Lord, for this love is attended with such a belief. Thus it is that man receives from the Lord a heavenly own (concerning which see above n. 155, 164, 731, 1023, 1044, 1937, 1947, 2882, 2883, 2891). The New Jerulsalem and its Heavenly Doctrine145. Because acting from freedom appears to man as if from his own proprium, therefore heavenly freedom may also be called the heavenly proprium, and infernal freedom may be called the infernal proprium. The infernal proprium is that into which man is born, and this is evil; but the heavenly proprium is that into which man is reformed, and this is good. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to keep the focus on understanding the Text in terms of its application to the inner life along with reinforcing any key LP principles that have been highlighted in the exchanges.

This week I am talking with award-winning book coach and award-winning author–of the books The Joy of Writing Journal and the brand-new Breathe.Write. Breathe.--Lisa Tener. And she has helped hundreds of experts and thought leaders write and publish their books and secure five and six figure book deals. I was so happy and honored to write the foreword for Lisa's new book, which draws a lot on Lisa's in-depth studies and practice of qigong. And if you've been with me since the “How to Be a Better Person” days, you may remember Lisa when she came on as a guest and walked me through her “meet your muse” exercise, which helps you get in touch with your intuition and receive messages from your subconscious that can help you move forward in your creative work or get insight into anything you may be facing, where you could use a little guidance. And lest you think Lisa is all about the woo, she also, I just found out while researching her for this episode, has her bachelor's and master's degree from MIT. We covered: How getting sick put her on the path to becoming a writer How writing down her dreams helps fuel her writing Working with the difficulty of earning a living from your writing A peek inside the small village of people it takes to publish a book The easy but powerful qigong move Lisa teaches to get you loosened up and ready to write A look at the tools, places, and times of day that help Lisa get her writing done. Hour 2 with Joe Starkey: Paul Skenes is one of, if not the hardest throwing starting pitcher in recent baseball history. Kaz doesn't think there's ever been a sophomore team captain at Air Force baseball, but Skenes was. He takes great pride in being the leader of the school and Skenes carried around the flag at football games and helped to defend it.
Some people think Christianity is just another self-improvement movement but Jesus says self-improvement isn't enough. How can we truly be helped?
How can leaders foster a culture of innovation and psychological safety in their organizations? In this episode of the Innovation Meets Leadership podcast, host Natalie Born sits down with Tim Fisher, the president of Jackson + Coker, to discuss leadership, innovation, and the importance of psychological safety in the workplace. With over 30 years of experience in the staffing industry, Tim shares his insights on how leaders can create an environment where employees feel valued, appreciated, and comfortable taking risks. He emphasizes the significance of common sense leadership, the golden rule, and the willingness to listen and be vulnerable. Tim also delves into the challenges faced by the healthcare industry and how his company is working to address the shortage of physicians and the mental health concerns among healthcare professionals. Tim Fisher currently serves as the President of Jackson + Coker, a locum tenens company filled with individuals who share his passion for making a difference in the world. Every day, he is surrounded by colleagues who inspire him to be better, expect excellence from one another, and understand the power of teamwork, positive energy, and hard work. The company is literally saving lives on a daily basis, and Fisher's role allows him to align his personal values with the company's values, an experience he has never had before in his career and one that he thoroughly enjoys. The Shaping of a Leader (00:00:00 - 00:05:00) Tim's upbringing and early experiences shaped his perspective on leadership. The Air Force Academy taught him the importance of being a good follower before becoming a leader. Common sense and the golden rule are essential in leadership, but often forgotten as people gain success. Fostering Psychological Safety (00:05:00 - 00:12:00) Psychological safety is crucial for innovation, as people must feel comfortable failing. Leaders should be visible, approachable, and willing to listen to their employees. Vulnerability and admitting mistakes can help build trust and psychological safety within the team. Challenges and Opportunities in the Healthcare Industry (00:12:00 - 00:21:00) The locum tenens industry helps address the shortage of physicians in underserved areas. Healthcare professionals face burnout and mental health concerns, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Partnering with locum tenens firms can provide physicians with flexibility and the opportunity to focus on patient care. The Importance of Purpose in Work (00:21:00 - 00:26:00) Many workers feel unappreciated and unhappy in their workplace, highlighting the need for purpose-driven organizations. Connecting employees' work to a greater mission can increase engagement and satisfaction. Finding one's purpose is a journey, and it's okay to take time to discover it through experimentation and failure. Becoming a Better Person in the Workplace (00:26:00 - 00:27:00) Workplaces that focus on helping employees become better people are thriving in today's world. Bringing one's full self to work and feeling appreciated are essential for employee well-being and success. On this episode of Our American Stories, Ben Franklin has the distinction of many "firsts": He invented the lightning rod, the Franklin stove, bifocals, the catheter, swim fins and the odometer. He started the first public library, the first volunteer fire company, the first American fire insurance company, the first hospital and was the first postmaster general. Chess.com also reminds us that Franklin was also the first known chess player as well as the first chess author in America. Here again to tell us the story is the Jack Miller Center's Editorial Officer and historian, Elliott Drago.
