PPO participation can quietly erode profitability when fees, network relationships, and write-offs are not regularly reviewed. In this episode, Kirk Behrendt talks with Clinton Johnson, founder of Profitable PPOs, about the hidden PPO mistakes that can cost dental practices seven figures over time. Clinton explains how PPO network structures work, why reimbursement has failed to keep pace with rising practice costs, how to evaluate the true financial impact of each plan, and why dentists should build a PPO strategy around their practice goals rather than making emotional decisions. Learn how to audit PPO participation, identify low-profit plans, improve reimbursement, and strategically move toward greater profitability and autonomy — listen to Episode 1094 of The Best Practices Show!Main Takeaways:PPO reimbursement has not kept pace with inflation and rising practice expenses, forcing many dentists to work harder to maintain previous income levels.Dentists can participate in PPOs through direct contracts, network share agreements, or umbrella companies, and those options can produce significantly different reimbursement levels.A PPO strategy should be designed around the practice's priorities, including profitability, broad network coverage, and administrative simplicity.PPO write-off percentages can be misleading when a practice's office fees are not appropriately set for its geographic market.Dentists should review EOBs and conduct a comprehensive PPO audit approximately every 18 to 24 months to verify network participation, fee schedules, and opportunities for improvement.Practices considering PPO reductions should use financial data and generally begin with smaller plans that have poor reimbursement rather than making large changes based on frustration.PPO optimization should include analysis, strategy development, financial modeling, implementation, and verification that insurers are paying the expected fees.Episode Chapters:00:00 Introduction to hidden PPO mistakes that can cost a practice seven figures.01:11 Kirk introduces Clinton Johnson and the complexity of PPO participation.03:57 Why dentists are producing more without necessarily becoming more profitable.05:58 Three ways dentists can participate in PPO networks.09:51 Why PPO write-off percentages can be misleading.12:08 Clinton explains the PPO profit ladder.13:41 The long-term financial and practice-value impact of poor PPO reimbursement.16:16 Why dentists need to monitor EOBs and identify missed upside opportunities.21:03 How to evaluate which PPOs are helping or hurting the practice.24:55 Why traditional PPO fee negotiation is less effective than it once was.27:09 When dentists should stay in a PPO or consider leaving.30:00 Risks of leaving a PPO without a structured plan.31:41 How PPO strategy can support independent dentistry.34:21 Which practices are and are not a good fit for PPO optimization.37:28 Clinton explains the Profitable PPOs analysis and strategy process.41:30 How to contact Profitable PPOs.42:00 Closing thoughts on profitability, independence, and practice ownership.Guest Bio:Possessing over twenty years of experience working with dental offices, Clint Johnson is passionate about helping practice owners optimize their PPO plan participation and profits. As the founder of Phoenix-based Profitable PPOs, Clint has focused that passion by helping ensure dentists participate with the right PPOs, in the right way, and for maximum reimbursement. Hundreds of dental practices every year, across the United States, big and small, look to Profitable PPO to provide the insurance participation management needed to make the most of their profitability–both in the present and in years to come. For Clint, dentistry has always been a family matter, with his father, grandfather and great-grandfather all dentists. The experience of seeing both the benefits, and the challenges, in dentistry inspired him to help doctors optimize their practices. Clint knew there had to be a way to help those in the dental field deal with the challenges and costs associated with insurance participation… And that challenge was the impetus behind the creation of Profitable PPOs.In addition to his work with Profitable PPOs, Clint is also an author and a frequent presenter at dental conferences. In his free time, he enjoys reading, skiing, scuba diving, and traveling with his wife and three children.Episode Resources:Profitable PPOs: https://profitableppos.com/Phone: 855-PPO-GAINMore Helpful Links for a Better Practice & a Better Life:Contact Gina to learn more about ACT: gina@actdental.comThe Best Practices Show: https://www.actdental.com/podcast/Smile Source Community Hub: https://www.actdental.com/community-hubUpcoming Events & Workshops: https://www.actdental.com/events/Smile Source: https://www.smilesource.com/Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.comSubscribe on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com
In this episode, Clint sits down with Julie Newman, accomplished aerospace engineer and bestselling author of “Pull Don't Push,” to discuss why decades of well-intentioned efforts to encourage more girls into STEM haven't produced the results many hoped for. Julie argues that the problem isn't a lack of encouragement, it's the way we're communicating about engineering. Together, they explore how engineering is often misunderstood, why creativity and communication are essential engineering skills, and how leaders, parents, and educators can inspire young people by focusing on possibility instead of obstacles. This is the first part of a two-part conversation.Topics Covered:Why traditional STEM messaging often misses the markThe difference between "pushing" someone toward a career and "pulling" them toward a possibilityHow Julie's career at SpaceX, NASA, Boeing, and Impulse Space shaped her perspective on leadership and engineeringWhy engineering is fundamentally about creativity, teamwork, communication, and solving problemsThe biggest misconceptions people have about engineers and engineering careersWhy communication skills can be a competitive advantage for engineersHow parents and educators can better introduce engineering to young peopleWhy engineering deserves a bigger role in the STEM conversationWhat business leaders can learn about influence from the way we talk about careersLinks:Julie's website - https://juliejnewman.com/ Julie's LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/julie-j-newman/ Julie's book, “Pull Don't Push” - https://amzn.to/4q7vcxW

In this episode of the Tell Me Somethin' Good podcast, Clint observes that most people wait for the perfect conditions to make a big move. He makes the case that momentum is not built through dramatic leaps. It is built through small, consistent, unglamorous steps taken in the right direction. And the person who masters small steps will always outpace the person waiting for the perfect moment. Check it out! ---------- If you like the podcast, you'll love the Tell Me Somethin' Good! book. This week, Clint, Meg, and Dan get called into the principal's office by Producer Carl over their out-of-control, NSFW episode titles. After drawing a "line in the sand" (and threatening each other with actual flax lashings), the crew tackles the absolute scam that is modern tech innovation. From Dyson’s $1,000 camera-equipped toothbrush to the $1.75 billion disaster that was Quibi, we break down history's dumbest, most overpriced inventions. Plus, Meg rubs a sponsored trip to Hawaii in everyone’s faces, forcing Dan and Clint to hit the block button out of pure jealousy.

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Beth Thomas. Beth grew up in Brownstown, a small town in southern Indiana. She went to IU undergrad, and IU school of Dentistry. She practiced dentistry for 14 years, during which time, her main hobby was training for long-distance triathlons. Not anticipating the dissolution of her business partnership, Beth opted for early retirement instead of starting a new dental practice. She sold everything she owned, invested it, and headed out on the road taking advantage of this unexpected freedom. One adventure simply led to the next. Beth's list of adventures are long and worldwide. This show we discuss her bikepacking trip through Patagonia down the famous The famous 700-mile gravel tour in South America referred to as the Carretera Austral (Route 7) in Chilean Patagonia. On this episode of Doomer Friday, I join Clint, Pavel and Justin for a deep dive into Robert Bigelow's latest podcast conversation with current Skinwalker Ranch owner Brandon Fugal. We get into some of the more intriguing claims and stories surrounding the Ranch, the wider mystery around Bigelow's involvement, and what it could all mean.We also discuss a British MP becoming more openly involved in the UFO conversation, before heading into some fun speculative territory around Disclosure, what it might actually look like, and whether we're any closer to seeing something significant happen.
The team addresses a hilarious live-on-air blunder where Meg mispronounced a caller’s name - Trani (spelt T-R-A-N-N-I)—leading to absolute mayhem and nearly suffocating the studio with laughter. Clint raises a pressing medical mystery: why does anyone actually choose to become a "butt doctor" (proctologist)? The crew debates whether the career choice is driven by a genuine passion for saving lives, a strange personal interest, or simply the rumoured $600k salary. And, Dan reveals he was offered a job line as an international flight attendant purely because of his height and reach, prompting a wild roleplay where he attempts to soothe a nervous passenger, manage dietary restrictions, and navigate Mile High Club requests.
Clint, Meg and Dan kick off Monday chatting Warriors results and show segments like “Imposter” and “Easy Money.” Meg recaps taking her daughter to the Paw Patrol premiere, and the team laughs about mix-ups like “full bore” vs “full ball” and “postboned.” They tribute Tim Curry and discuss Olivia Rodrigo’s festival donation, plus Snoop Dogg’s $50K feature fee. A big debate asks when it’s acceptable to watch a shared TV show without your partner, followed by calls about pulling sickies, with Gen Z highlighted. They plan a water balloon throw-and-catch record attempt at Eden Park, start Flat Idol for Rhythm and Vines tickets, and begin an Imposter story about a nudie-run dare gone wrong. 01:52 Weekend Movies and Paw Patrol 04:45 Full Bore Mix-Up 05:31 Adult Realizations 09:24 Pop Culture Scandal and Donations 10:59 First Caller 15:39 Naughty 640 20:19 Father's Day Lessons Segment 24:15 Easy Money 25:54 Caller Quiz Wrap 26:28 Netflix Cheating Debate 34:40 Water Balloon Record Plan 39:20 Flat Idol Launch 44:57 Who Pulls Sickies 54:36 Easy Money 56:28 Tom Hardy Rap Pivot 01:04:58 Festy Bestie 01:08:02 Imposter 01:16:40 Sport Roundup Wrap

Ron and Clint break down the Texans' Braden Smith situation after his plantar fascia injury. Ron and Clint set the bar HIGH for a Texans defense entering 2026 with enormous expectations. With Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Derek Stingley Jr. and Calen Bullock among the key pieces, Hughley explains why he plans to judge this defense by the VERY HIGH STANDARD being set for the unit.

Ron and Clint crank up the expectations for the Texans' defense entering 2026. Hughley says he's going to hold the unit to the standard it has been given — meaning Houston needs to dominate teams like the Titans, Colts, Giants, Browns and Steelers rather than allowing those offenses to put up 20 points.
Ron and Clint discuss the relatively quiet camp surrounding the Texans' top weapon. Ron isn't ready to read too much into it, but the bigger questions remain: WILL NICO COLLINS STAY HEALTHY, AND WILL HE GET THE TOUCHES HE SHOULD?
Ron and Clint run through the BIGGEST STORIES OF THE DAY, including Brent Strom returning to the Astros as a pitching consultant, Ali Gaye's major knee injury, the latest on Braden Smith, Wan'Dale Robinson being evaluated for a concussion after a hit that Titans coach Robert Saleh called “cheap,” Leonard Williams' new contract in Seattle and the TCU media controversy.
