I've recorded hundreds of conversations with incredible people working on the front lines of the future. People who've asked the most important question: what can I do? Who found their answer and followed it. But for today's conversation, we're going back to the front lines of the past because the past can tell us a whole hell of a lot about today and how tomorrow might go.But only if we tell the full story of how we got here, about who got us here, about how my great-great-grandparents got here. And how my grandma got here fleeing the Nazis, and how millions of Africans were forcibly brought here, over 35,000 trips across the middle passage over almost 300 years. The full story of the choices we made then, which was not so long ago, and continue to make now about wars and heritage and bondage and family and land and more. And how, if we can break from the stories we've been told and continue to tell ourselves to choose history over nostalgia, to choose facts over memory and infinite disinformation on demand, we can make different choices. My guest today is Clint Smith. Clint is the number one New York Times bestselling author of How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America, he's the winner of the National Book Critic Circle Award for nonfiction, the Hillman Prize for book journalism, the Stowe Prize, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and was selected by the New York Times as one of the 10 best books of 2021.And now in 2025, the Young Reader's Edition has just come out and it is wonderful. Clint is also the author two books of poetry, the New York Times bestselling collection Above Ground, as well as Counting Dissent. Both poetry collections were winners of the Literary Award for Best Poetry Book from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, and both were finalists for NAACP Image Awards.Clint is a staff writer at The Atlantic and he has received fellowships for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New America, the Emerson Collective, the Art for Justice Fund, Cave Canum, and the National Science Foundation. His essays, poems, and scholarly writing have been published in The New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, the New Republic, Poetry Magazine, the Paris Review, the Harvard Educational Review, and elsewhere. Clint is a former National Poetry Slam Champion, and the recipient of the Jerome Jay Shestack Prize from the American Poetry Review.-----------Have feedback or questions? Most of our pain comes from the stories we tell ourselves - not the people around us. When we stop taking things personally and choose gratitude over judgement, we begin interpreting life through our identity in Christ rather than our ego. This renewed lens produces peace, clarity, and emotional freedom.

Amazing post from Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13) which got me thinking about a few things. This post sums up how all of us can do more and be more for others. Clint shared this: “Every morning when my feet hit the ground, my first thought is: Lord, let me be a simple man in a complex world. Let me be a source of encouragement for others. Let me be some light for others. I tip my hat to my son Christian for challenging me to share positivity beyond my email list which nearly 10,000 people read daily. He said, "Dad, you have no idea what social media can do." His advice was simple: "use Social Media to share what you've done, not what others should do." I don't have all the answers. I'm just a simple man in a complex world trying to share experience, strength, and hope.” Just imagine if we can not only put out more encouragement, hope, compassion, empathy, joy, etc., online - but also with our words & actions in the real world with others! Instead of the ugly & condemning words, judgement, hate, lies, etc. (this is tough typing one handed). We don't need to have all the answers, but we need to try to be better and do better towards others. Thanks for listening. In Part Two of Clint's conversation with Shane Snow – award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, and best-selling author of “Dream Teams: Working Together Without Falling Apart” – the focus turns from what makes a great team to what makes a team truly high-performing. Shane explores the concept of “cognitive friction” and how constructive conflict, when handled with humility, is a catalyst for innovation rather than a barrier to it.The two also talk about the dangers of groupthink, the myth of culture fit, and why benevolence, not brilliance, is the real foundation of trust. With stories ranging from Steve Jobs' bathroom placement to Malcolm X's intellectual transformation, Shane explains how great teams cultivate shared thinking, mutual growth, and meaningful disagreement.. This is the second part of a two-part conversation.Topics Covered:What cognitive friction is and why teams need it to innovateHow leaders can separate disagreement from personal conflictWhy “culture fit” is overrated but “culture add” is essentialThe unexpected power of benevolence in building trustMalcolm X's reinvention and the courage to change your mindHow to proactively guard against groupthinkThe challenges of building high-performing teams in hybrid and remote workWhat the phrase “let's explore that” can do for your team cultureLinks:Shane's website - https://www.shanesnow.com/Shane's LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanedsnow/Shane's book, “Dream Teams” - https://amzn.to/4qz7M4f

In this episode of the Tell Me Somethin' Good podcast, Clint addresses one of life's most difficult realities: senseless loss that leaves us asking, "Why?" He does it with raw honesty and gentle hope. In the wake of a workplace tragedy that hit close to home, Clint talks about sitting with pain, supporting those who are grieving, and finding light not by bypassing the darkness, but by walking through it together. What does a truly successful life look like? This week, we explore Ecclesiastes chapter 9 and how it challenges our cultural definitions of success, inviting us into a radically different way of living. We're confronted with two sobering realities: first, that our lives are not ultimately in our own hands but in God's hands, and second, that death comes for us all regardless of our achievements or status. Rather than leading to despair, these truths become the foundation for profound joy and freedom. The passage reveals that only about 10% of our lives are actually within our control—the rest is determined by genetics and circumstances beyond us. This means we can stop frantically grasping and start gratefully receiving. The teacher's prescription is surprisingly celebratory: eat your bread with enjoyment, drink your wine with a merry heart, wear clean garments, care for your body, and deeply enjoy your relationships. These aren't escapes from reality but acts of worship that acknowledge God's goodness woven into creation itself. When we understand that our lives rest in the hands of a loving God, we're freed from the anxiety of trying to secure our own success. We can be present, savor small moments, and find that true spiritual maturity looks like unhurried joy in the everyday gifts around us—exactly as Jesus modeled in his own remarkably relaxed and interruptible life.

Exodus 19:16-25Senior Pastor, Clint PressleySunday November 9, 2025
When we choose gratitude, we're not just obeying Scripture—we're reshaping our hearts and even our brains to trust God's goodness. Like the disciples who forgot the miracle of the loaves, anxiety often comes from forgetting who Jesus has already proven Himself to be. When we remember His faithfulness and give thanks, peace—both spiritual and biological—rises up to guard our hearts and minds, empowering us to live calm, steady, and confident in every circumstance.

This conversation takes a thoughtful, no-nonsense look at Spirit baptism, gifts, and the heart of what it means to walk in the Spirit. Brandon, Lindsy, and returning guest Clint Byars unravel the baggage around tongues, anointing, and impartation—while exposing how elitism and gnostic thinking have shaped Charismania. They wrestle through semantics, misunderstood doctrines, and real-life experiences of the Spirit, ultimately pointing back to the simplicity of being complete in Christ. From worship as warfare to fasting as a tool for training the flesh, this episode dives into how believers can yield to the Spirit without chasing after hype. Clint closes by sharing a powerful, holistic gospel message rooted in God's love, freedom, and kingdom reality.Forward Church — his church (south of Atlanta): https://forward.churchClint Byars (personal site + resources/membership): https://clintbyars.comStrong & Godly Men — free course/project for men: https://strongandgodlymen.com
