As they delve deeper, Jon recounts his military background and the lessons learned from his time in the Marines, highlighting the importance of mental resilience and practical self-defence. Jon relates anecdotes about his training experiences, including memorable encounters with notable figures in martial arts, such as Helio Gracie, and his thoughts on the evolving nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His ability to blend humour with serious topics makes for an entertaining and thought-provoking listen. "I just teach martial arts. That's it, really. Just try and do fun things and make the best of life." "You can hold that against them, but they're just kids from awful lives." "If you want to be successful in martial arts, the white gi is the way to go." "You can't imagine it, can you? And the way he kind of relayed it, it was just a very boring story for him." On this twenty-eighth episode of the podcast, I chat with Richard Bresler. Richard is the first American to ever train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the Gracie family when they came over from Brazil. Richard recently became an author when he wrote and released "Worth Defending: How Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Saved My Life". He also operates an alternative healing practice that helps clients change their lives through nutrition and holistic practices. On this episode, Richard shares how living with Rorion Gracie and his family changed his life. When Rorion first arrived in America from Brazil, he met Richard Bresler and enrolled him as the first student in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Over the next year of living with Rorion, Richard learned from legends of BJJ like Helio Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Relson Gracie, and many more. He would go on to become an instructor and teach Jiu-Jitsu to people from all walks of life. On this episode of the Jiu-Jitsu Outlet podcast, we talk about the lessons that Richard learned from the Gracie family. Join me as i answer listeners questions and i talk about how i joined and why i joined Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A Japanese old style of Jujutsu that dates back to Muromachi period in Japan between 1333 and 1573, later taken by Helio Gracie where he used concepts from jujitsu/judo. Helio Gracie founded an art with heavy ground emphasis now know as Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Little bit of history! Enjoy! Don't forget to like and leave a review. Listen in as we hang out with the legendary Pedro Sauer. We get into what it was like to start BJJ with the Gracies and how everyday was a fight. How we have gotten smarter with training over the years. We even talk a little about Helio Gracie and how he was a very stubborn man but was so smooth like silk on the mats. Pedro quit a lucrative business job to move to America and start a school training BJJ and at that moment was being challenged to fight everyday just to prove Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the most superior martial art around. Pedro even gives a first hand account of losing one of his greatest students, the great Keith Owen earlier this year. It was such a great privilege and honor for us to hang with Pedro, so please sit back and enjoy the show!LinkTr - LimitLess RadiocastBe sure to check out LimitLess Tape for your finger-tape needs:Facebook - @LimitLessTapeInstagram - @LimitLess_TapeFor your Realtor needs:http://twebb.dehoff.com/Cell: (281) 889-0140FB - Thomas Webb - DeHoff RealtorsIG - dehoff_realtor_tcwebbFor your Dentistry needs:www.woosterohiodentist.comIG - Gateway Dental CareFB - Gateway Dental CareFor your Lawyer needs:www.kandraylaw.comFB - Kandray Law, LLCFor your local beer needs:www.magiccitybrewingcompany.comFor your coffee needs:www.mhbeans.comPut in LIMITLESS at checkout for AI Wellness a discount for your workout supplement needs.Put in LIMITLESS20 at checkout for both companies below to get a 20% discount:www.rollamongus.comwww.battlebalm.com & www.battlebalmcbd.com - All natural pain trauma and recovery balm. “Breathe and Flow with the Go.” – Rickson GracieMy guest this episode is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Vale Tudo, and MMA legend Master Rickson Gracie. He reigned as world Jiu Jitsu champion both in the middle-heavy weight and open divisions for almost two decades, retiring with an undefeated record after hundreds of Jiu Jitsu, Vale Tudo and challenge matches. Since retiring he has focused on unifying the Jiu Jitsu community and spreading his family martial art through his Jiu Jitsu Global Federation and teaching seminars across the world. He is the author of the NY Times and Wall Street Journal Best seller, one of my favorite books, Breathe – A life in Flow. Netflix is also developing a film on his life titled Dead or Alive. This Episode is a master class on the warrior's way. Master Rickson is an inspiration and personal hero of mine, he is the embodiment of a modern samurai. My Key takeaway is that everything begins and ends with the ability to control our breathing so we can relax under pressure and approach both martial arts and life with a fluid body and mind mindset. Master Rickson details that flow is all about presence of mind and body so we can seek a connection and find harmony through balance. The art of flow is about cultivating our sensitivity so we can make micro adjustments and continuously make ourselves comfortable in uncomfortable situations. We discuss training methods, teaching philosophy, and the gift of empowerment. Master Rickson's stories are so inspirational, and his lessons are life changing. I hope you get as much out of this as I did.
Join us as we chat with Professor Chet Schemahorn, a 3rd Degree Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Chet Schemahorn started his training in May of 1995 watching VHS instructional tapes released by Rorion & Royce Gracie, after witnessing Royce revolutionize martial arts in the early days of the UFC, and then attending 2 day seminars with Royce in Columbus, Ohio. Due to financial limitations, Chet could only go to the Gracie Academy for 1 week visits 4 times a year. He would take what he learned each time and show his close friends, always correcting mistakes and adding new techniques. In February of 2001, after teaching 2 of his students the entire stand up self-defense program and filming them performing the moves for Rorion Gracie and Helio Gracie to review - and after a vigorous private session where Grand Master Helio Gracie pointed out some needed corrections, Chet was promoted to assistant instructor of the Gracie Academy. On a historic occasion, in August 2016, Chet was the first ever certified instructor to promote 3 students to the rank of black belt without having to travel to the Gracie Academy in Torrance, Ca. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today's guest is Alberto Robayo. Alberto Robayo is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the legendary Rorion Gracie, the eldest son of Helio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Alberto is the owner and head instructor at Miloki Flow BJJ academy with locations in Philadelphia, Miami, Florida and soon Charleston, SC. Alberto, born in Bogota, Colombia has a fascinating story that he shares that takes us from his hometown of Bogota, Colombia, to Australia, Mexico, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and now Charlestown, SC. Alberto graduated college with a business degree in Colombia, then soon ventured off to Australia where he earned a degree in Film and TV production. While in Australia, Alberto worked on feature films and documentaries, while also working as a divemaster and scuba diving instructor. Then one day he discovered BJJ. Alberto tells the story of how a brief stopover in Los Angeles resulted in him meeting the Gracie family, his future wife and changed the course of his life. Alberto found himself living in Los Angles and training full time at the Gracie Academy in Torrance. Not having any money to pay the tuition at the Gracie Academy, Alberto worked as a janitor cleaning the school to pay for his tuition. In our conversation today, Alberto shares with us the life lessons he learned from training with the Gracie family, why when he is making a difficult decision, he first decides what he does not want to do to help him decide the best course of action. Alberto and I also discuss why training BJJ can be such a powerful, positive force in people's lives. Alberto also shares with us the story of a motorcycle accident he was in back in 2016 that required multiple surgeries and years to recover from and why he thinks that accident was “great thing” that happened to him and how that accident brought about positive and needed changes into his life. We also discuss what lessons he learned from being a small business owner during a global pandemic and what life lesson he took from the COVID shutdown that he is carrying forward with him into the future. I was so excited when Alberto agreed to come on the show and share his remarkable story. Alberto is just an awesome guy. He is candid, speaks with emotion and passion. He is one of the most interesting people you will meet: beside being a black belt in BJJ, he is an entrepreneur, family man, he speaks 3 languages, has produced movies and documentaries, been a dive master, scuba instructor and even jumps out of airplanes. So… Thank you for listening. If you like what you hear, please HIT the SUBSCRIBE BUTTON. We have a bunch of cool interviews, like this one, to come. Professor Leonardo Vieira, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Romero Cavalcanti, being famous for combining one of the most crowd-pleasing games in BJJ with an amazing track record. Leo Vieira was also the co-founder of important teams such as Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu and Checkmat BJJ, becoming in the process one of grappling's most important coaches by developing athletes such as Marcus Almeida ‘Buchecha', Lucas Leite, João Assis, and many others. Leozinho is also one of the Top BJJ Competitors of All Time by BJJ Heroes.Lineage: Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rolls Gracie > Romero Cavalcanti > Leonardo VieiraMain Achievements:1st Place ADCC (2003, 2005)1st Place IBJJF World Championship (1999)1st Place IBJJF Pan Championship (2002/2004)1st Place CBJJ Brazilian Nationals (1998)2nd Place ADCC (2011/2007)2nd Place IBJJF World Championship (1997)3rd Place IBJJF World Championship (2000)1st Place IBJJF World Championship (1996 brown)Weight Division: Peso Leve (76 kg / 167 lbs)Favorite Position/Technique: Brabo Choke, Guard Passing.Association/Team: CheckmatThe following year, his first as a black belt, Leo fought his way to the final against Marcio Feitosa in the first of many historical duels between the two. This first fight went to the Gracie Barra fighter, Feitosa, but in 1998 when the two met once again in the final, Leonardo was the victor in one of the hardest fights of the event. 1998 was the last time Leonardo won the World Championship, although he did make the final again in 1999 (losing to Royler Gracie) and placed 3rd in 2000.His career's highest point had not been reached however, that came in 2003 when Leonardo won the World's most prestigious Submission Grappling title, the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club), a gold medal achieved again in 2005.In between this period, Leozinho moved to Sao Paulo and was training under Fabio Gurgel at the Team Alliance HQ there until 2002 when a group of competitors joined up against the head coach Gurgel. Leonardo left the team together with most of the black belts that trained there. The argument (in broad strokes) was over the ‘Mundial‘ (World Championships by IBJJF federation) which occurred a week after the Copa do Mundo (World Cup). As the Copa do Mundo offered a good prize money to its competitors and the Mundial didn't, Leonardo and his teammates felt they should support this organization (CBJJO – Confederação de Jiu Jitsu Olimpico) and compete in it, Gurgel however decided against it for reasons that were never made public. The fighters went on to fight at the ‘Copa' and Gurgel banned them from the gym, and so Leozinho and the others formed another team, ‘Master Team' to honor the gym where this group had started training in the 1980's. The Master Team later became Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu.
As many of you know, several years ago, I immersed myself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and, frankly, it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for myself in my entire life. And, today, I am joined by a man who has done a tremendous job in getting the art to the masses by codifying a system of learning Jiu-Jitsu that has trained and developed tens of thousands of martial artists. His name is @renergracie, a 4th-degree black belt, the grandson of Helio Gracie, and the founder and chief instructor of Gracie University. We talk about the system he and his brother created, the differences between sport BJJ and combat BJJ, building legacies, training our police force to handle themselves, and how to develop a level of comfort in chaos. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The starting point of Jiu-Jitsu Becoming the exception Knowing when to strike Doing things the right way The only fight that matters A product of savagery Cracking the code The art of violence The Police Disappointment Gap Spreading the word The Bully-Proof program Enforcing boundaries Expressing dissatisfaction Understanding the consequences RENER GRACIE My guest today is Rener Gracie. He is the grandson of the man who brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to America, Helio Gracie. He is a 4th-degree black belt and is the founder and lead instructor of Gracie University where he has instructed thousands of men, women, and children in the art of BJJ. He’s also extremely innovative and forward-thinking and has created programs specifically designed for law enforcement, women, and children (through their Gracie Bullyproof program). In addition, he trains many top-level fighters including UFC’s Brian Ortega. Needless to say, the man knows what he’s doing and he comes from a long line of very capable and proficient tacticians. ACCOUNTABILITY Most of the men who join our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, do so to gain some level of accountability. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I started the organization. But with as many men who are looking for some level of accountability from the programs, masterminds, and brotherhoods, they participate in, few offer as much accountability as we have built into the Iron Council. Abdel Ziamari narrowly survived a horrific crash. He would have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. But partly due to his mindset, he fully recovered. During his hospital life years he had all the time to learn about his own brain. That enabled him to study and become a master of his thoughts. He found life energy by discovering a new dream: to set up his own Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym. Abdel has now realized this dream. Abdel's formula for success? He mainly got his strong mindset through inspiration from the martial arts and his hospital years. How? You will discover during this interview!

The Gracie’s are arguably the most influential family in all of martial arts. Rener, grandson of grandmaster Helio Gracie, has dedicated his focus on the self-defense portion of Jiu-Jitsu, teaching law enforcement for over 20 years. In this episode we discuss the newly signed “Diaphragm Bill” by New York Mayor Bill De Blasio, which prohibits police officer’s from applying any pressure to the diaphragm. On the surface, this may sound like it protects civilians, but Rener believes it will cause far more harm than good.

Some might say that grappling is a young man’s sport. I disagree! I mean, let’s look at Helio Gracie and his brother Carlos. They lived to 96 and 92 years old, respectively and still trained until they died. Now, of course… grappling in your younger years can come easier, but I can’t wait for you to hear this interview with Richard Colavin, who started training… not in his 30s, not in his 40s, but YES in his 50s. As of this recording, Richard is a 4th-degree Black belt and is in his late 70’s. Richard is still teaching, every week and if you’ve taken his classes you know he is all about the slow and steady pressure. Richard has always been an inspiration to me, showing me that you can train smart and that this is not just a young person’s sport! In this interview, we talk about starting BJJ in his 50s, the early days of BJJ in San Diego and his motivation to keep training in his late 70s. You'll learn what he things the biggest misconceptions about BJJ history are; who the first Japanese person to teach Kodokan Judo in Brazil was; who the first woman to train was; what the differences were between Jigoro Kano's judo at the time and the jiu-jitsu taught by Mitsuyo Maeda (who wasn't the only one using the "Count Koma" name); the critical role of Donato Pires dos Reis and Jacinto Ferro; the importance of Brazil's Navy in promoting jiu-jitsu, and how Maeda taught to the Brazilian Navy in the Amazon, including Luis Soto; Geo Omori and Takeo Yano's contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; how Brazil's history, including the transition from the monarchy to the Old Republic to the dictatorship to the authoritarian estado novo affected jiu-jitsu -- especially a harrowing story about when Robson and Carlson were arrested by the Brazilian military government, and how they got out with the help of Helio Gracie & Helio Vigio. If you're grateful for jiujitsu's global reach, you owe a bit of a debt to Dennis Asche. The founder of Connection Rio BJJ Hostel helped create a pipeline of Americans training in Rio Di Janeiro, learning and bringing their skills back home. Great Grappling instructor Jeremy Arel was one of the very first guests at the hostel, and when Dennis came to visit Great Grappling, Lourdes spoke with him about the original aim of Connection Rio, why the hostel is closed now and when it'll re-open, about training with Helio Gracie and Rorion Gracie, and about Carolina food. Here's Lourdes' interview with Dennis Asche. Thanks as always to our sponsors, US Grappling, Toro BJJ, and Cageside MMA! Register online at usgrappling.com to compete on Sep. 16 at US Grappling Virginia Beach, and if you need gi or nogi gear to compete, find the best products at cageside.com! If you want access to bonus content, you can support us at patreon.com/dirtywhitebelt, as Cody Maltais, Karl Krebs, Chris Holmes and Betty Broadhurst did this month -- thanks, y'all!
Not one but TWO legends of jiujitsu are on the show this week. Our featured interview guest is Pedro Sauer, the legendary 8th Degree Red/Black Belt Instructor under Helio Gracie and Rickson Gracie. We cover a lot of ground, including: the first time he met Helio Gracie; his time living in Rickson Gracie's garage with Luis "Limao" Heredia, and how he wound up in Utah and now Virginia; How his famous fight with Mr. Utah came to be (and he tells us at least one detail about that fight that I'd never heard before); The story of the log that Helio Gracie used to practice #chokes on, that he got from his friend Bauru, that now resides at Pedro Sauer HQ -- and the one story about Bauru he can tell in public; advice on keys to longevity in jiujitsu, whether he advises people to compete, and what true self-defense means, including how to protect your joints; why the black belt means something more than what you can do on the mat, but how you can make a difference in the community as well. He also tells us who the most underrated person in jiujitsu is, and the answer may surprise you. All this and much, much more, plus photos from the rich historical material that populates his academy. Our news segment features questions with another legend, Murilo Bustamante, who spoke with us after our Dirty White Belt-sponsored seminar at Toro BJJ world headquarters this week! He tells us why it's so important for fighters to train in the gi and shares his favorite memories from his fight career.
Check out our interview with Javi Vasquez. We chat about the differences and approach of Carlson Gracie and Helio Gracie to Jiujitsu, the need of change in MMA and a historical outlook to the fight game. Enjoy!

In this very special episode we interview two Marcelo Garcia Brown belts. Jonathan Satava, who won gold at the 2013 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu NOGI Championships in the Middle (175.5 lbs) division, and Mansher "Munchie" Khera, who won gold at the same event in the Light (162.5 lbs) division, are the victims of the night. We asked them hard hitting questions, and everything from who are recent influences to what would you say to Helio Gracie if he was here today. Between talking about their recent run to Gold, we also take time to crack jokes, mostly at Ben's expense. We're Undercard Superstar, and we're combat sports a tad hungover.
