I've begun studying this South Bay history, this is just a starting point of reference. But then I will attempt to go deeper into the history of the indigenous people from those regions. I also talk very briefly if some of the indigenous Native American current history I have come across in recent studies: CBC press conference about Turtle Island and Trudeau, San Marcos Reservation in San Bernardino and a NBC news story of a Riverside math teacher chanting around mocking indigenous culture while trying to teach students about SOH CAH TOA in trigonometry and geometry lessons. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Surviving Trauma With Dr. Kristen Zaleski

Beyond The Balance Sheet Podcast

Today's guest is psychotherapist Dr Kristen Zaleski. Dr Zaleski speaks about surviving trauma and the impact trauma has on its victims. She breaks down the different levels of trauma and explains that trauma consists of moments that happen during a high-stress state. Dr. Zaleski discusses how trauma is different for each individual and describes the signs parents should  look for in their own children. Tune in today to learn more about how trauma affects individuals and the support people need to work through the trauma they have experienced.     IN THIS EPISODE:     [00:55] Dr. Kristen Zaleski's background.   [1:52] Is there such a thing as generational trauma, and how does someone break the cycle?  [4:00] How do professionals find a way to provide help but still manage their own lives?  [6:41] Are there differing capacities to the way people handle trauma?   [8:58] We have exposure on a daily basis through social media, the news, etc. Are there different levels of trauma?   [13:18] What should parents look  for if their children have experienced trauma?   [18:06] How Dr. Kristen Zaleki sees the connection between those who have experienced trauma and those who are affluent.  [22:38] What do we think about the long term impact of those who were sexually assulted by those in power?      KEY TAKEAWAYS:     The capacity to handle trauma depends on how you were raised as a child and how your self-care and  survival strategies are when it comes to stress.   Stress is an important and necessary part of life. The important thing is being able to find a way to regulate the stress and find a way back to homeostasis. It's important for parents and caregivers to allow their children to experience stress, but also educate them on healthy ways to cope.   There is a lot of blame and discounting of trauma with victims. People need support to shift the narrative from it being their fault to it being a situation that happened. They need  help to work through the feelings of stress that come along with trauma.     BIO:  Kristen Zaleski, Ph.D., LCSW is the Clinical Director of the Mental Health Collective, founding director of the USC SDP-Keck Human Rights Clinic, and a past Associate Professor at USC in the School of Social work for the past decade. She is also a psychotherapist in private practice in Hermosa Beach, California. Kristen's research and clinical focus spans two decades with trauma survivors and survivors of human rights abuse. Dr. Zaleski's first book, Understanding and Treating Military Sexual Trauma, is currently in its 2nd edition and is the first social work text on the topic. In November 2019, Oxford University Press published her second book, Women's Journey to Empowerment in the 21st Century, on the topic of transnational feminism and global violence. Dr. Zaleski is an Advisory Board Member to Meta (previously Facebook) on the Global Safety Task Force team and is a trainer at the Department of Defense on sexual violence treatment and theory.      USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck Kristen Zaleski Profile     Dr. Kristen Zaleski's Website    The Mental Health Collective Website    Dr. Kristen Zaleski's LinkedIn    Dr. Kristen Zaleski's Twitter

Boosting immunity and weathering the seasons, by a mother-daughter, Chinese-American duo.Combining the trends of culinary medicine and seasonal eating and adding a dash of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Healing Herbal Soups: Boost Your Immunity and Weather the Seasons with Traditional Chinese Recipes by Rose Cheung and Genevieve Wong is the first book of its kind to focus on boosting immunity and weathering the seasons, by a mother-daughter, Chinese-American duo. Rose and Genevieve have been making Chinese herbal soups in their kitchens all their lives. They made broths to help their bodies adapt to the seasons, and now, for the first time, they're translating these traditional recipes—all of which have been vetted by Dr. Shiu Hon Chui, a preeminent TCM doctor, researcher, and professor—into English.Rose is a mother and entrepreneur, inheriting her fondness for soup from her mother who raised her in a very traditional Chinese family in Hong Kong. After Rose moved to the United States to attend college, she got married and decided to settle down in Southern California, and later opened and owned a Chinese restaurant in Hermosa Beach for four years with her husband.Genevieve is a four-time Emmy-nominated producer and writer. As a journalist, she has reported for news organizations like NBC News, the New York Post, and the Los Angeles Times. Genevieve is also a former cooking producer at The Nate Show, where she worked alongside celebrity chefs like Todd English and Bobby Flay. After two decades of suffering from conditions like eczema, allergies, and asthma, Genevieve became extremely interested in TCM at the age of twenty-three, and by default, began to learn about the healing powers of Chinese herbal soups.Listen as they tell us about these special soups, where to source these herbs, and the residual health benefits aside from their intended purposes in this encore episode from January 2022.

Any band that hammers along for 43 years should be praised. But for a hardcore outfit that first seethed “I don't wanna live / To be thirty-four / I don't wanna die / In a nuclear war” 42 years ago on their 1980 debut Group Sex, pushing on for over four decades is a bit of a miracle. The Circle Jerks should be honored with a skanking statue in their hometown of Hermosa Beach, California. “If you would've told me in my 20s that I'd be in a seminal hardcore-punk band in my 60s, I would've said ‘you're fucking crazy, dude! I'm going to be dead by that time,'” jokes longtime Circle Jerks bassist Zander Schloss. “Now I say, live slow, die old!” The Circle Jerks were formed in 1979 by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and ex-Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. (Hetson has also been a member of another seminal SoCal punk rock band, https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-bad-religion (Bad Religion), from 1984-2013.) They were joined by bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer. Group Sex is one of the most important albums in the first swell of hardcore. It's worth noting that the 14-song collection was crammed into less than 16 minutes of tape. Tasmanian devil Morris raged his commentary on sex, drugs, politics, the rich, and even self-reflection. His bandmates redlined to keep up. Hetson's swift, stabbing guitar parts pierced and slit through the slamming, double-time rhythmic pistons that were Lehrer and Rogerson. Their 1982 follow-up, Wild in the Streets, contained five songs over two minutes long and three covers (“Wild in the Streets,” “Just Like Me,” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”), but all 15 tunes were still laced together with the same frenetic guitar bursts and rambunctious rhythms of Group Sex. The last of their most-influential works was 1983's Golden Shower of Hits, which alternated between short, melodic mayhem and slower-but-still-acerbic stompers. The next year saw the arrival of Schloss, who contributed heavily to the band's final three studio releases: Wonderful (1985), VI (1987), and Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities (1995). While out in support of the latter, their major-label debut, the Circle Jerks imploded. In subsequent years, Hetson focused on Bad Religion, started Punk Rock Karaoke, formed Black President, and built out his Hetson Sound studio. Schloss played guitar for Joe Strummer, drove the bass for the Weirdos, and even entertained on the silver screen, starting with the role of Kevin in Repo Man. While Morris battled health issues (he fell into diabetic comas in 2008 and 2013), he was able to get several projects off the ground and revisit old ones including Midget Handjob, Off!, and FLAG. The latter's a Black Flag byproduct featuring former members bassist Chuck Dukowski, guitarist/vocalist Dez Cadena, and Bill Stevenson—who produced most of their 1980s catalog—on drums, plus Stevenson's https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/descendents-stephen-egerton (Descendents) bandmate https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/descendents (Stephen Egerton) on guitar. Before the current celebratory run marking the band's first live shows in 11 years (and first full U.S. tour in 15), they announced drummer Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles of Death Metal) would be propelling the Circle Jerks' runaway train. And since the band's core members are now all in their 60s, and the resolution of the ripping “Live Fast, Die Young” is yelled out at each show (“I don't wanna live / To be fifty-seven / I'm living in hell / Is there a heaven?”), they're well aware that according to their own canon they shouldn't be here and certainly not having this much fun. “I never thought the Circle Jerks would tour again, but you know what? Dreams do come true, and in some weird way, we're doing better than ever and this world tour proves it,” remarks Schloss. But is

This week, I talk to local Hermosa Beach, California  residents, filmmaker and activist, Heidi Swan and former city council member, Carolyn Petty.  We talk about the little known link between teen marijuana use and adult schizophrenia, as well as the increasing incidences of depression and anxiety. Marijuana has been found in many cases to be a gateway drug to many more severe drugs and even suicide in recent years. I wanted to shed some light on this topic due to the legalization and dispensaries popping up in what seems like every town in California. I had no idea about some of these frightening statistics. We also discuss the importance of labeling, the risks so parents understand how they can get involved.  I have spoken about this topic in a past episode with Michelle Leopold, who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose in 2019.  I hope you listen and share this episode. This episode was sponsored by BetterHelp.com. Working Full Time, Parenting Small Kids AND Killing It with Land Academy Member Nathan Cheung (LA 1795) Transcript: Steven Jack Butala: Yeah. Steven and Jill here. Jill K DeWit: Hello. Steven Jack Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, entertaining land investment talk. Jill K DeWit: And I'm Jill DeWit, broadcasting from the Valley of the Sun. Steven Jack Butala: Today we have Nathan Cheung, current Career Path member. I've got a ton of questions for him. First and foremost, how are you finding Career Path, and what led you to the point of making the decision to join us? Nathan Cheung: Yeah, well, first I just want to say thanks for having me on. I've been listening to the podcast for a long time, probably since 2019. When I first listened to it, I probably started with episode 100, or something, and just rolled all the way back. I had a really long commute. Jill K DeWit: Wow. Nathan Cheung: So, a little surreal to be talking live, but just- Jill K DeWit: Outside of Career Path. Nathan Cheung: Yep. Yep. That's right, outside of Career Path. I think I'm the fourth cohort of Career Path. I was really interested in joining one, two and three, but I actually work full time. I've got two young kids, so I think before, it was on Wednesdays or Thursdays, so that was... It was going to be hard to explain to my boss what I was doing. Jill K DeWit: Why are you taking these four hour lunch breaks every Wednesday? I don't know. Nathan Cheung: Yeah. But as soon as you guys offered it for Saturday, I just jumped all over it. I asked my wife, almost sheepishly, "Hey, there's... Land Academy is doing Career Path on Saturday." To my surprise, she didn't even flinch. She just said, "Do it. Go for it." She watches the kids while I do it. I hide out. They don't even know I'm around. It's been awesome. Yeah. Jill K DeWit: Good. Steven Jack Butala: What do you do in real life? What's your [inaudible 00:06:23] job? Nathan Cheung: Yeah, so my background, I'm actually a pharmacist. Jill K DeWit: Okay. Nathan Cheung: So no real background in real estate or entrepreneurship, but caught the bug a few years ago. Long story short, I'm here now. I'm still working full time, but kind of... I'm really doing both. Steven Jack Butala: We interviewed Dan Smart, who was... He's a pharmacist with his wife. I don't know if it aired yet. If it didn't, it's going to air next week. Jill K DeWit: Brainy people travel in our group. That's the whole underlying theme here. I'm going to say, it's definitely because of you. It's not because of me. I don't think I draw in the brainy people. So, that's funny. Steven Jack Butala: We have a really good friend, he's from Iowa. He's retired and he is got... He created from the ground up, this very successful contracting business that specializes in grain elevators for farming. He told this joke recently to us, and we were all on the floor about checking out a pharmacist with a couple of packages of bacon and his cholesterol medicine, over here. I'm sure you've seen it all. Nathan Cheung: Yep. Jill K DeWit: That's good. Okay, so 2019 you found us. Do you remember when you joined Land Academy? Nathan Cheung: Yeah, middle of 2019. Jill K DeWit: Okay. Nathan Cheung: I didn't really know what I was doing yet, still kind of getting my first couple deals under my belt. Actually went to the live event, the last one in Hermosa Beach, so that was, that was huge for me, just kind of hearing what the other members did. I remember specifically, I want to say Matt Rogers, kind of hearing him speak, hearing some of the other advanced members talking, just thinking, "Wow, this is possible." It seemed really far away from me at the time, but realizing that it was possible, I think that kind of helped catapult me a little bit. It's like each step of another mental barrier to level up, and to level up, and to level up. Steven Jack Butala: Someone told me a really long time ago that if you're a real entrepreneur,

(A third is about to open.)   Tony says he moved to SoCal from Ohio with the goal of incorporating his love of art, architecture, and entrepreneurship.   "The fashion industry just fit," he says.   In Manhattan Beach, he was introduced to a fashion designer looking for an investor.   "I fell in love with her designs, spoke to some people in the community that also loved them," he says. "I thought, let's just do this thing."   Tony says fear and failure are vital parts of an entrepreneur's life - it's just how you deal with them.   "If you choose the life of an entrepreneur - everyone needs to understand - you choose to fail," he says. "Nobody really can call themselves an entrepreneur if it's successful the first time they do something. That's just luck."   The key is turning the fear of failure into positive energy.   "The purpose of fear - going back to the earliest times - was fight or flight. It was to make you aware of a danger of a predator," he says. "As an entrepreneur, the danger of the predator can come in many ways, and the fear to me, that's the battery. That's the charge that keeps us all moving."   For Hammitt, Tony says the factor that has set the brand apart is the focus on the brand experience.   "We want everyone to walk away from meeting Hammitt, touching a Hammitt bag, encountering a Hammitt fan - just really understanding what we're all about and what we're all about is we're this little brand out of Hermosa Beach, California."   In Part 1, Tony talks about:   * Gratitude for a Father's Day gift from his young son years ago that he still displays today. * The company focuses on building the brand one relationship at a time. * His background in art, architecture, and entrepreneurship. * How to stare down fear and failure. * The focus on the brand experience. * Why making a high-quality product is better for the environment.   Join Ramon Vela and Tony Drockton as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Hammitt, visit: https://www.hammitt.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. Kevin Sousa is a Program Director and Ocean Therapist at the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, as well as a therapist in private practice in Hermosa Beach, California.  While we initially approached Kevin to learn more about the benefits of surf therapy and the work of the JMMF, we quickly learned that Kevin had his own story to tell about his path to sobriety, being present, and the importance of enjoying the wave you're on right now. Kevin shared with us his doctoral thesis, Soul Seeking: A Crossing, where he shares his journey from alcohol abuse and addiction to sobriety through the lens of training for the Catalina Classic, an annual 32-mile paddleboard marathon from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach, CA.  Kevin's story is one of endurance, gratitude, and one of healing himself by helping others.  Training for the Classic carried Kevin through the earliest and most difficult days of his path to sobriety.  As a professional musician, building up his physical endurance to complete the race was only part of Kevin's journey.  Unleashing new found creativity, songwriting and performing, played a significant role in Kevin's ability to confront and deal with his addictions.  We learn about the history and the work of the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, one of the oldest surf therapy programs in the country, which provides surf therapy to “at-promise” youth, veterans through the Wounded Warrior battalion at Camp Pendleton, and most recently, first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic.  We talk about a lot more than surfing.  Kevin shares his views on meditation and how being mindful has helped him along his journey.  “You can't do it wrong,” he says.     Whether it's meditating, writing music, performing, surfing. . . Kevin tells us that it's all about putting yourself in situations where you have to stay engaged and stay present.  Kevin's message is one we can all learn from:  focus on the present.  “The perfect wave is the one you're on.”Support the podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2022 Silver Linings Media LLC. Key Points, Top Takeaways, and Memorable Quotes“In 2017, I was just kinda doing life, had two little kids and a house, a pool in the backyard, and a job.  It was 120 degrees outside, but to get back to the cancer story.” 3:54“One thing I didn't know about Testicular Cancer is that it's the most common type of cancer in white males between the ages of 18-34, which is a very big eye-opening thing; I was diagnosed at 38.” 7:54“Besides being told you have cancer, to me, the scariest thing about it was just the word chemotherapy.” 9:21“I played volleyball during chemotherapy with friends and I felt pretty good.  I had to take it easy and chemotherapy made you a little more sensitive to the sun, and obviously, energy levels are a little lower.” 14:50“I'm very grateful that I responded the way that I did to chemotherapy.” 15:14“I compared it to sports and this was the path that I needed to do to get better for cancer and chemotherapy was the vehicle.” 16:21“There's a reason middle blockers don't set.” 16:45“The key is to check yourself; self-exam (hate to say it and laugh but) or have someone check for you.” 21:44“The social connection and the physical exertion was so big for me for my own mentality knowing that I could be going through chemotherapy but I'm still able to play volleyball.” 23:19“When other friends of mine go through life adversity and troubles and tests, I always want to be there to help them and make them know that I'm there to help them if they want my help.  They have to come to me; I'll make myself available.” 24:35“A good mental check for me to know that I could still compete.” 34:02“When I was playing full time, I would train harder than the matches were so that the matches seemed easier.” 37:46“What it felt like to have that emotion flow through me from volleyball, but then from all challenges and to overcome them and to get back to a place where I was satisfied with volleyball.” 50:58“When I was coaching at the college level, there was no social media.  There was none of this pressure from external factors, from opening up instagram and seeing yourself get blocked on repeat every single ten seconds.” 56:36“Accept it. It's volleyball. You got blocked. Big deal.” 56:59“Let them try all the sports, they'll pick whichever sport they want to play, then when they get to the level where it's more serious, there's other dedicated full-time coaches for them to get coaching.” 58:14“I really do enjoy talking about volleyball without it being to a team that I'm coaching or seeing faces and having to kind of rearrange your talk track a little bit.” 1:02:43“I know that I need to have a goal athletically that's physically challenging for me to work towards, for my own personal psyche, and how I operate when I'm with my kids, what I want to do and where my focuses are.  1:14:33“It's not about going back and changing what's happened in my life to have gotten me to where I am today.  It's analyzing and thinking about the choices I've made given the situations that I was in that have brought me to where I am today, and what I can take from them moving forward for myself and the most important people around me in my life, whether it's family or friends.” 1:22:39“It's not looking back in regret, but it's learning from the choices and helping me make the right choices moving forward so it puts me in the place to be the things that I wanna be for myself, and as a parent for my kids or a friend or whatever I need to be for that day.”  1:23:12“Realize where you are, what you have, take it, and be better for it.” 1:23:58 Guest Bio - Matt Prosser was born and raised in Ventura, California and now lives in Hermosa Beach. He is a 43 years old father of two young boys Nolan (8) and Welles (6).  Matt started playing volleyball at the age of 13 after playing nearly every youth sport, once he found volleyball he was hooked.  A self-described “volley-nerd” in middle school and high school Matt was a Junior Olympic Champion in 1997 and went on to play NCAA volleyball at Long Beach State where he was a 3-time All-American, team captain, and NCAA finalist.  After graduating with a broadcast journalism degree in 2001 Matt went on to play one season of professional volleyball for OK Maribor in Maribor, Slovenia.  Matt started playing beach volleyball in high school and during the summers of college in Ventura and decided to play professional beach volleyball in 2003.  Matt played on the AVP tour for 13 seasons, and made the 2010 AVP Hermosa Beach Open Finals as the 13th seeded team with John Mayer but lost in the finals to Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.  Matt won the 2011 AVP Champions Cup in Huntington Beach with partner and childhood teammate Matt Olson. Overall, Matt competed in 105 professional beach volleyball events between 2003 and 2018.  His final main draw appearance was in the 2018 Manhattan Beach Open when he partnered with Eric Beranek as the Q34 seed winning four matches to qualify for the Main Draw approximately one year after being diagnosed and recovering from testicular cancer.  Matt turned his love of indoor and beach volleyball into an emerging career in international and domestic broadcasting, doing play-by-play and color commentary for Long Beach State Men's Volleyball, Volleyball World, and Italian Professional Indoor Volleyball.  Matt broadcasts VNL matches and will join AVP events later in 2022.  Outside of volleyball, Matt enjoys coaching his sons sports teams, and stays physically and philanthropically active, supporting the Arthritis Foundation and will ride in the California Coastal Classic Bike Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.Show Notes 0:00 - What I Meant to Say Podcast Intro0:18 - Introduction1:57 - Comeback Story2:10 - Cancer Survivor Story2:52 - From the Beginning4:19 - During the Physical Exam5:49 - Diagnosed March of 20176:20 - What's the Course of Action?8:48 - 5 Years Clear in May9:11 - 9 Weeks of Chemo then Back to Volleyball10:28 - Chemotherapy Was Very Scary13:12 - Raw Vegan13:48 - Grain Brain Book14:30 - An Athlete's Perspective on Cancer Treatment15:54 - Only 28 Days 16:31 - Blocking Analogy and the Importance of Setting18:29 - Back to Your Chemotherapy Approach19:06 - My Hair Came Back19:28 - There are Reminders20:02 - Relying on the Data with Confidence21:21 - What is Your Advice to Men?22:58 - Fortunate to Play Volleyball During Chemo23:51 - Feeling Comfortable and Safe 26:09 - Is it a Challenge to Get People to See the Doctor?27:15 - The blessing of family support28:12 - Effects of Chemotherapy28:57 - Timeline to Hermosa Beach 201729:46 - 2017 Hermosa Beach AVP Qualifier 32:49 - Playing Stadium Court34:02 - Reality Check34:27 - 2017 Manhattan Beach AVP Qualifier35:59 - Mentoring Eric Beranek37:19 - Playing with Eric's Energy Levels38:24 - 2018 MBO Top Ten Video Clip40:56 - Different Mindset in Austin42:31 - Work Responsibilities Spiked42:58 - 2018 MBO AVP Qualifier47:14 - Last Match to Get In48:37 - One of My Biggest Moments49:17 - Jason's Compilation of Top 5 Qualifier Matches in Last Decade50:28 - Well of Strength in Overcoming Challenges52:21 - Similarities with Tri Bourne53:30 - Culmination of Playing AVP55:35 - Journey of Athlete to Parenting56:36 - College Athletes and Social Media57:42 - Separation Between Being Parent and Coach59:04 - Taking a Step Back and Broadcasting 1:00:28 - Color Commentary at Long Beach State1:02:30 - Opportunities1:03:22 - Where Do You Go from Here in Your Athletic Journey?1:04:38 - 2018 Labor Day CalCutta1:07:26 - No Wins on Saturday = No Sleep1:08:16 - Something Happened Sunday and We Clicked1:09:18 - Winning and Finding Fulfillment1:12:50 - Do You Have Fun Playing For Fun?1:14:00 - Ran First 10K Super Bowl Sunday1:14:49 - Half Iron Man and California Coastal Classic Bicycle Ride1:15:54 - Set a Goal and Go Achieve It1:17:10 - Comfortable Discomfort with Challenges1:19:20 - Longest Running Event or Distance1:20:55 - Iron Man Challenge1:22:15 - Wisdom to Yourself or the Younger Generation1:23:58 - Be Better1:24:38 - Where Can People Find You?1:26:28 - WIMTS Podcast Closing Links & Where to Find MattArthritis Foundation - DONATE HEREhttps://events.arthritis.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.participant&participantID=261153See More from Wendy JoneBroadcasts on ESPN+ Plus for Long Beach Men's Volleyball www.NVAUSA.comwww.VolleyballWorld.TVIG - @themattprosser

The Global Partner for FATHERS FOR THE FATHERLESS https://f4f.bike/   Show Notes: 4:45 –  “I have five kids and I have…five extra kids. And what I mean by that is there's a there's being a dad and there's also being a dad like one, because around us there's always some kids who don't have a father figure in their life at all.” 5:55 – “The greatest name I've ever been called is DAD…I just I think there's a lot of guys who are missing out on some great opportunities in life… the cool part is, is even where our dads lack, God completely picks up plus some…” 7:39 – Funny How Life Works book 9:36 – “There's going to be times where things seem rough. You don't know what to do as a dad. You're struggling. But just the fact that you're there, just the fact that you're present is awesome. But in those times when things are getting hard, the key thing to do is to be still and listen to the Father's voice because he is talking to you. And what he wants you to know is that he's right here. He loves you. All you have to do is open your eyes.” 11:17 – “Correct but don't reject.” 12:43 – “Telling his kids after discipline:  “I just do not like disciplining you. But it is a requirement. It's what I'm called to do. Otherwise you won't be prepared for when life tries to discipline you.” 16:14- Addressing the “hecklers” in our lives – often our own negative self-talk.  “You have to address the heckler and use scripture to chase the heckler away.” 17:05 – On stepping out of being amatuer as a dad. The oldest dad in the world gave you this assignment, which means you must be ready for it….He is the greatest dad ever. And he looked at you and said, you know what? You're ready. 17:43 – The impact of his dad apologizing to him. “I remember him apologizing to me and I and I don't know if he was human before that. Like that's when he was most human when he apologized… “ 18:11 – Tips for having important, hard conversations with your kids. 20:12 – Quote from Funny How Life Works: “Looking back, I now realize that many of the things I resented or found annoying about my earthly father are the very things that allowed me to open the gifts my Heavenly Father had deposited in me.  23:46 – “So you're going to make some sort of mistakes. But fellas, I want you to know for sure you are absolutely dadAWESOME, because I got an awesome dad and I know I'm going to be an awesome dad because I'm a give it my all. Even if we're going the wrong way, I'm going the wrong way all the way, because I'm doing it because I love my kids and they're going to know that.” 24:55 – The way comedy works is there's a set up and there's a punchline. Right? The setup is when a comedian makes you think in one direction. What a punch line is when you change that direction in a way you're not expecting. The results are revelation, fulfillment and joy expressed through laughter. In life, it's the same way. 33:49 – So by all means, look for those opportunities to speak into somebody's life. That base that you got. You got that base for a reason. Some kids need to hear that coming from five feet above them, or a foot above them. Or eye to eye contact or maybe even looking up to them. Just speak into their life. Guest BioAfter competing both indoor and on the beach for UCLA, Savvy made a huge impression in her first year as a professional in 2021.  Even though her athleticism is incredible to watch, her blend of tenacity as an athlete and sensitivity as a human has made her a joy to get to know.  Her willingness to be transparent and share her story, which includes an understanding of what it means to live with anxiety, makes her an even more compelling and relatable athlete to watch in the years to come.Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes“I think that their parenting styles are based off how they were raised.” 3:03“I want to be the most flexible partner, not only physically in playing left or right, as a teammate as a partner, emotionally and mentally I want to be able to communicate with them.” 3:53“I play my best when I play with someone that I have good chemistry with, someone that I get along with.” 4:33“If I have good chemistry with someone or the same qualities, and we can have fun off the court, I think that's really huge.” 5:36“You graduate high school and you're like the best on your team or the top whatever on your team.  Then you go somewhere like UCLA and you're like I'm gonna go play all the time and I'm gonna dominate, and that's not always the case.” 6:06“I'm a big believer that everything happens for a reason.  I made a stupid mistake that I learned from, but if I didn't have those 5 weeks to just go be a freshman and go party and go be dumb and do my thing, I don't know if  I would be where I am today.” 7:58“When I'm on the B side my goal was to fire them up and take down the A side.” 9:36“A lot of what I learned at UCLA was it's not always how you imagine it to be, but I wouldn't trade my experience one bit.” 9:54“I learned so much more through those seasons that the team wasn't that great or I had a slump in my game.  It was really challenging for me trying to lead a team feeling alone or not feeling like I could be the true full leader that I wanted to be.” 13:00“I think that when people imagine a leader, they imagine the captain of the team and the person who plays all the time, but you can lead by example in the weight room even if you're not playing, you can lead when you're on the bench, you can cheer super loud, you can be supportive.” 14:28“You can still be a leader whether you're a freshman or a fifth year.  You can be a leader whether you play or you don't.  As long as you're working hard, as long as you can get respect by working hard, showing up on time everyday, and you are being a good person, people will respect you and listen to you no matter what age you are, no matter how talented you are, and I think that people forget that.” 14:50“Don't push your body past it's limits because then you'll be out longer!” 19:16“If I'm watching tv, why am I not on the floor stretching?  And that's what I'm continuing to learn.” 22:45“My athleticism will only take me so far.  I have to get smarter on and off the court, take care of my body, make sure, do I really need that glass of wine tonight with dinner? No, probably not.” 23:37“When I have a couple beers, I sleep terrible!” 24:03“As long as I surround myself with people who are doing the same thing, which a lot of us are, it's really helpful.” 29:33“If I go to a competition and I'm like this is my job and I need to make money, and I play like that, then I'm not gonna perform.  I need to play because I love it.” 30:13“There is more to life than sports and if you're not feeling it, you have to take time to heal.  Just as you would take time to heal an injury, you have to take time to heal your mind.” 33:09“Everyone's process is so different.  Where I am at 23, hopefully I'm still playing in 10 years or more.  I might not be the same person when I'm 33, but at least where I'm at right now, I love the game and I'm doing it because I love it.” 34:47“My favorite thing to hear is ‘I just love how much fun you're having.  I loved seeing you smile.'” 36:19“What other sports are there where the pros are on vacation with these random guests?” 39:38“I feel people are going to follow me and support me and like what I'm doing if it's authentic.” 42:45“As long as I have a good attitude and I don't let that get to me and I continue to play because I love it, not because of the certain partner that I want, then it's all going to work out the way it is supposed to.”  44:40“There are days where I get asked to go play with people who are better than me and I'm like I have to go prove myself.  But if I wanna actually improve and  get better, working on vision stuff, holding on defense, and all these things that I need to do to get better.  If I'm working on that stuff, I'm not going to be at my best because I'm going to get worse before I can actually improve at that.”  50:08“It's all finding the balance.” 53:53“You never know who you're going to meet that might help you.” 55:13“If you don't love soccer the way I love volleyball, you shouldn't play in college.” 57:55“Enjoy the process.” 1:06:09“Continuing to remember, you're playing a sport and it's meant to be fun and just keep enjoying the process, keep having fun, and keep being grateful for the opportunities you have.  You're healthy.  You're able to play beach volleyball, and not many people can say that.”  1:06:25“I am physically and mentally able to go play a sport that I love.  I have a healthy family and healthy friends, and I'm living in an amazing place.” 1:06:55“Have fun, enjoy life, it goes by quick.” 1:08:00 Show Notes1:11 - Where do you come from? 3:03 - Parenting Styles3:52 - Being a Positive Partner6:02 - College Career and Highlights6:48 - Freshman Year Suspension Obstacle9:03 - Sophomore Year and My Role9:54 - What I Learned at UCLA10:26 - Senior Year and COVID13:45 - Learning to Lead  15:36 - Pac-12 Pair of the Week Clips17:38 - Back Injury Rehab22:05 - Discipline to be a Good Patient/Next Level Athlete24:00 - Oura Ring and Sleep26:09 - Diet27:04 - Article on Why You Shouldn't Look at Your Phone Before Bed28:30 - How diet is affected by sleep28:55 - How there is a time and a place for things - moderation30:10 - Finding the balance of being 23 and having super high hard goals30:57 - Netflix Tennis Documentary by Marty Fish31:58 - Savvy's struggle with anxiety33:33 - Lifelong Love for the Game37:43 - SOB Volleyball Vacations 39:54 - Volleyball Community in Hermosa Beach, CA41:11 - The Struggle with Social Media43:40 - Points and Partnerships46:35 - AVP Manhattan Open with Zana Muno 48:40 - Expect to Learn50:08 - Invitation to Play Up51:16 - First Generation from NCAA52:58 - Financial Priorities and Balance54:37 - Finding Sponsors and Support57:40 - Siblings 1:01:14 - Rally Highlight in Atlanta1:03:55 - Karaoke nights - Jeff Samuels and Good Directions by Billy Currington1:05:04 - Wrap Up and Thanks1:05:50 - Takeaway for the Younger Generations Links & Where to Find SavvyIG - @savvysimoSouth of the Border Vacations - sobvolleyballvacations.comFeatured Athlete - https://bebetterwithwendyjones.com/featured-athletes/
