#106 - Black Flag - Damaged

Riff Worship

After years of relentless touring, financial hardship, lineup changes, and violence, Hermosa Beach hardcore pioneers Black Flag finally unleashed their debut full-length Damaged in 1981.With 20-year-old newcomer Henry Rollins entering the fold, the band delivered genre-defining anthems like “Rise Above” and “Police Story” while also pushing boundaries on the raw, experimental “Damaged I & II.”Conflicts over the album's distribution sparked a lawsuit from the label, ultimately delaying the release of their equally influential (and polarizing) follow-up. Nevertheless, Damaged stands as the product of Black Flag's blood, sweat, and defiance, and remains a towering pillar in punk history!Recommendations:Salome - SalomeSalome - TerminalThou / Salome - Our Enemy CivilizationThanya Iyer - TIDE/TIEDMachine Head - The More Things Change...Propagandhi - At PeaceFor all updates on Riff Worship follow us on Instagram and TwitterWatch Riff Worship on YouTubeWatch Review's from the Dylbozer's DinCheck out our official playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

BUT now the "Levity Live" company and all the "Improvisation" comedy clubs around the country are offering Free Admittance to shows each month to peopl who signed up as Organ Donors....an amazing program!Jamie Alcroft, a comedian known for his work as part of the comedy duo Mac and Jamie, and for hosting the TV show "Comedy Break", is on a mission to promote organ donation through his Laughs for Life program. Inspired by his own heart transplant experience, Alcroft launched this initiative to offer free comedy shows to organ donors, thereby raising awareness and encouraging more individuals to register as donors. The program, which has already been successful in 12 comedy clubs nationwide, including the Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, aims to expand further, incorporating music venues as well. By collaborating with renowned figures like comedian Alonzo Bowden and organizations such as Levity Live, Alcroft hopes to spread the message of organ donation while bringing laughter and gratitude to those who support this invaluable cause.(00:01:00) Comedy Shows Promoting Organ Donation Initiative(00:03:39) Laughter Inspires Organ Donation Awareness Movement(00:04:32) Laughs for Life: Comedy Promoting Organ DonationSupport the showWebsite: Standup Comedy Podcast Network.com www.StandupComedyPodcastNetwork.com Free APP on all Apple & Android phones....check it out, podcast, jokes, blogs, and More!"NEW" Video Podcast: Tag Team Talent Podcast on Spotify & YouTube See your favorite comics and other performers...Fun! Words by Kris PetersTwo of the all-time punk greats have returned to Australia, with pioneering California dynamos PENNYWISE and beloved Swedish trailblazers MILLENCOLIN touched down and ready to co-headline a huge run Down Under.A band synonymous with punk rock and thought-provoking lyricism, PENNYWISE erupted out of the vibrant coastal setting of Hermosa Beach in California with their self-titled debut album in 1991, ultimately going on to change the sonic landscape and cultivate a sweltering legacy via their unique blend of DIY spirit, hardcore, skate punk and SoCal pop punk. Renowned for their ability to fuse raw emotion and ravenous energy with themes of empowerment and rallying calls for change, PENNYWISE encapsulate the essence of rebellion with anthems like Bro Hymn and Fuck Authority, while also remaining as fundamental to punk rock and hardcore as stage dives and guitars. With twelve studio albums, including their Certified Gold records About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997) and Straight Ahead (1999), PENNYWISE have also showcased their formidable onstage presence across the globe for decades alongside the biggest names in the scene, most recently supporting Dropkick Murphys for a huge North American tour, and also for Aussie audiences last year as part of Good Things Festival. A band fluent in balancing the spirit of punk alongside subversion and celebration, PENNYWISE are primed to bring the revolution to Australian audiences in 2025.HEAVY spoke with bass player Randy Bradbury to find out more."Not much, really," he replied when we ask what has changed with Pennywise since they were last in Australia. "We've been on the same trajectory for a while. For us, it's about getting out there and playing live and having energetic shows. You wouldn't wanna change that, so not a lot has changed. The important stuff is still intact."In the full interview we talk about Australia being like a second home, how good it feels to have half the tour sold out before they even board the plane over here, touring with Millencolin and why the two bands work well together, what we can expect live, his early days in the band and getting used to being in a band he previously loved, sticking to your guns musically and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We lost two Minneapolis icons in the last month, and this week’s episode is a tribute to both. After suffering a sever stroke in 2012, Slim held on for well over a decade before passing away on December 18, 2024. Besides a couple of great tributes to the man by The Mad Ripple and The Walk Offs, this episode features music Slim created with Curtiss A, The Replacements, and as a solo artist. There’s also a couple of sets of cover tunes from the wonderful Songs For Slim tribute series, along with a surprising superstar cover that debuted on Sirius shortly after his death. On January 5, 2025, former Suburbs singer/guitarist Beej Chaney accidentally died during a swim in the Pacific Ocean near Hermosa Beach, California. The last half hour of the broadcast features a sampling from all of the groundbreaking band’s releases on Twin/Tone and A&M Records.  Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the passing of these legends. Lorie Ladd joins the podcast to breakdown the 5D shift, Trump's role as a lightworker, opening the heart, embracing polarity and more. In this interview, Lorie explains the concept of light codes and their activation in the human body, as well as the fall from grace and the journey back to Earth's initial blueprint of the fifth dimension. The conversation explores the concept of breaking free from the systems and programming that control us and the role of lightworkers in this process. Lorie Ladd knew at the age of 13 that she was here to assist in this human evolution. She was walking down the street in a cute beach town called Hermosa Beach, wearing her worn out flip flops, and she heard this loud whisper outside of her say, “You are here to assist humanity through their evolution”. She knew this message was her Divine blueprint and that she was here on the Planet for something greater than she understood. It took her about 30 more years to courageously commit to that Divine message, letting go of any idea of how she thought my life would play out. In 2016 she moved from Marin County, CA where she was an executive assistant and cocooned myself into the small town of Mount Shasta, CA. It was here she launched her own platform and began to teach about the evolution in human consciousness, reaching millions of people. Eighteen months later she travelled to Machu Picchu where she received the download for her book "The Divine Design," an international best seller. ___________________ PODCAST CHAPTERS 00:00 - Lorie Ladd Intro 01:18 - Living as Soul and Body 05:09 - Experiencing Jesus' Compassion 14:53 - The State of Humanity's Suffering 20:10 - Opening Humanity's Heart 24:47 - Light Codes and Human Evolution 31:04 - The Role of DNA and Higher Dimensions 41:48 - The Human Impact on Earth's Frequency 48:44 - Lightworkers and Their Mission 57:08 - Trump as a Lightworker & System Breaker 01:02:44 - The Emerging New Consciousness 01:06:32 - Overcoming Fear 01:08:49 - Navigating the Puppet Show of Current Systems 01:10:01 - The Role of Community 01:11:09 - The Domino Effect of System Breakdowns 01:12:36 - Breaking Free from Systems 01:14:00 - Glimpse Into Emilio's Awakening and Journey 01:16:17 - Realizing the Purpose of Lightworkers 01:21:18 - Lori's Soul Awakening in Kenya 01:32:55 - Balancing Polarity and Creating Equilibrium 01:43:54 - Encouraging Humanity's Transformation 01:44:56 -The Lion's Symbolism and Humanity's Evolution 01:55:48 - Time Capsule for Future Leaders ___________________ Guest: Lorie Ladd | Human Evolution Website | https://lorieladd.com/ The Divine Design Book | https://lorieladd.com/the-divine-design Untangled YouTube Series | https://lorieladd.com/untangled Kenya Trips with Lorie Ladd | https://lorieladd.com/africa-waitlist Lorie's Online Patreon Community | https://lorieladd.com/patreon Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/lorie_ladd/ YouTube |  @LorieLadd  Host: Emilio Ortiz Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/iamemilioortiz/ Subscribe to YouTube Channel |  @EmilioOrtiz  Watch Emilio's latest series on 4biddenknowledge TV l https://bit.ly/AwakenThe6thSense Shop Our Clothing Collection l https://www.unlockedmovement.com/collections/justtapin ___________________ Special Offerings to Support the Show: ✦ Make a One-Time or Recurring Donation on PayPal

Being eco-conscious was ingrained in the ethos of growing up where he did, participating in beach clean ups, and very much aware of the deterioration of water quality. He attended Long Beach State to play volleyball, and then transferred to the University of Southern California to study American Literature.  Between his undergraduate degree and graduate degree, he worked in the film and event planning industries. He then decided to shift to a career in the environmental sector, attending graduate school in Washington DC at Johns Hopkins via their hybrid program, studying environmental science policy and sustainability. He and Ted met when he worked at EcoMedia, where he was hired to be a Program Director, developing and managing public/private partnerships. He then worked for Waste Management as a national business development manager, where he focused on customized and scalable programs for Waste Management's Fortune 500 customers, leveraging internal assets and technology. Brian then moved on to consulting with climate tech companies. He and Ted discuss some recent ventures, including the Bluebox energy efficient HVAC solution, Hytch Rewards mobility app, Oceanworks recycled plastic solution, and being a board member of Sustainable Surf. Working with all of these mission-driven companies that tackle big problems, Brian believes that the concept that the environment and profit are at odds is a myth, and that creativity and innovation prove that every day!

This week, legendary LA food writer Bill Esparza made waves when he dropped a scathing review of Villa's Tacos on his Instagram stories. The review had been building for weeks, if not more than a year, and its Kendrick-style intensity left all of Los Angeles talking. Father Sal is with us today to dive deep into the situation, including what led to it, what the review got right and wrong, and how Victor Villa and others in the LA food community responded. We attempt to answer the essential questions - was Bill's criticism fair? Did he go too far, was he too mean? And what does it mean that Bill's opinions on these tacos, seems to be so far removed from that of other key voices in the food world including Bill Addison, LA Taco and even Michelin Bib Gourmand. One housekeeping note, Bill's review took place on Instagram stories and is no longer available. Fear not, we've got your back. We took screenshots and the entire review can be found at our substack, LA FOODSTACK, linked in the show notes. On a lighter note, we're also joined on the podcast today by Duncan Parsons and Joe Wedd, the duo behind Creamy Boys, a New Zealand-style real fruit ice cream concept down in Hermosa Beach. I had a blast talking to these two rambunctious fellas about how they turned their lifelong friendship and passion for their hometown delicacy into a business concept that is kind of taking Los Angeles by storm. If you haven't had New Zealand style ice cream yet, I'm not sure you can really say your summer has even begun. So give this a listen, and then go get your Hokey Pokey on. This episode of SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, features our annual Spring-is-here episode with our neighbors up North: Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing. Per usual, they dropped by Hermosa Beach for a month for a pre-season training camp, gearing up for a final push at the 2024 Paris Olympics. On this episode, we chatted about: What lessons Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing learned from a very full 2023 season The new standards of their coach, Srdjan Veckov, and why he was actually mad when Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing beat Miles Partain and Andy Benesh last December The new culture of their team, and why Dan Dearing is now gladly puking after conditioning (well…kind of gladly) The thin margins between victory and defeat at the Challenge and Elite16 level And much more. NOTE: Dan's mic got unplugged and his audio is absolutely terrible. Our streak of mostly decent audio is back to zero. Apologies for the gaffe and we appreciate your patience, as always. Corinne Quiggle had one of the most volatile seasons of her burgeoning beach volleyball career. From losing in three straight qualifiers and barbequing in the first AVP of the year, she took that adversity and flipped it into the first AVP win of her career, in Hermosa Beach with Sarah Schermerhorn. What once looked like an awful start actually set her up to enjoy the most unforgettable year to date, capped by a bronze medal at the Pan American Games. We chat all about that, as well as: How Quiggle and Schermerhorn were able to overcome a brutal start and awful week of practice prior to Hermosa and use it to fuel their first win The value of having the same partner for what will soon be three years The mindset tools she's discovered that have helped her the most Why the Pan American Games are one of the coolest experiences in volleyball And, per usual, much more.
