Rafael McMaster Founder Rafael McMaster is an artist who began his career in fashion and has designed clothing lines for Puma and others. His design career led to multiple lines of snowboards, brand and design work for Chris Paul, Matthew McConaughey and MEK denim as well as Webby award nominated websites. In 2016, McMaster hit a wall. Everything on the outside looked perfect— a great family, house, car, and position at a world class creative entertainment agency— but inside Rafael felt spiritually bankrupt. His friend Dave Brubaker told him, "You got to the top of the corporate ladder only to realize your ladder was on the wrong building." Looking for a change and a new vision for the next chapter of his life, Rafael sought to volunteer at his daughter's elementary school and show his art locally. Having painted for 20 years as a hobby, friends and patrons alike encouraged Rafael to share his art professionally. It was this inspiration that led him to two surprising facts: there was no art class offered in his daughter's elementary school, and there were zero galleries in his hometown of Hermosa Beach. Rafael felt this was his calling—to cultivate art and its awesome power to connect— within his community. Inspired into action, he founded the South Bay Artist Collective, a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose purpose is to cultivate creativity, consciousness, and connection through art. He founded the gallery and creative lab Resin within months, and began a world-class youth creative arts program, weaving in decades of professional creative direction, graphic design, fashion design, and original music into a dynamic and comprehensive arts program. All of these thriving entities are now known as Indivisible Arts. https://www.indivisiblearts.org/ https://www.rafaelmcmaster.com/ LinkedIn Page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rafael-mcmaster-ba573531/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rafaelmcmasterart/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mcmaster.peace/ YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVP8eNYx58zbFZuBSZj6b8w

I have been hanging around the South Bay beaches since my youth. Maybe you caught my Instagram posts about how that happened. As a family, we spent much of our time in Hermosa Beach; I love the SoCal beach culture. There is an established group of restaurants under the moniker of Chef David Slay. He is a bit of an anomoly in that he has been a chef since his 20's (so well established in that sense), but at the same time, a rising star (usually an accolade for chefs just starting their career). Our conversation was fluid and full of insights. I have to say, sitting down with Chef David Slay for this episode of Wine Talks was a real eye-opener—and honestly, a relief in a business that's changing faster than most of us care to admit. We met up down in Hermosa Beach, a little outside my usual zone, which always seems to lend itself to looser conversation. There's no pretense with David; what you see is what you get, and that made for an episode full of straight talk. We kicked things off on common ground—hot yoga, of all things. You'd think two guys from the food and wine world would bond over Burgundy or beef carpaccio, but no, it's sweating it out in the same studio, talking about how houses and restaurants are being remodeled and how somehow, hot yoga becomes as much therapy as exercise. There's something grounding about that, and it set the tone for the rest of our conversation. What I appreciate about David is his clear-eyed view of the industry. He doesn't look at the shift in wine preferences or restaurant trends with nostalgia or bitterness. Instead, he recognizes that consumer tastes have changed, and he's made it a point to adjust right along with them. “I make wine for what the consumer wants, not for what my taste is,” he says—and you can tell he means it. That's rare. For some in the business, adapting is an insult to tradition. For David, it's just good sense. He describes older guests coming in with big Italians and Bordeauxs, while younger tables are ordering orange wine and lower-alcohol options. Rather than resist, he's leaned in, updating his own winemaking and keeping his wine lists relevant. David also spoke candidly about the business realities—shrinking wine lists, higher prices, and changing buying habits. The days of bragging about a 350-bottle inventory are gone; he's pared it down to 150 because that's what works now. What isn't moving gets cut, and what sells gets the spotlight. He's refreshingly honest about costs, average bottle prices, and even how certain cult wines just don't have the cachet with younger drinkers anymore. Running restaurants, building a wine brand, and surviving the post-COVID landscape takes more than passion. David's approach—focus on quality, pay your people right, and stay involved every day—seems to be the formula. I especially respect how he talks about his crew; he'd rather pay a dishwasher above the norm and keep staff long-term than deal with constant turnover. It's practical, but it's also the right thing to do. When we talked about food and wine, he's got the same data-driven but thoughtful outlook. He doesn't buy into the old dogma about pairings; instead, he sees the restaurant as a place where anything goes, as long as the customer has a good experience. Honestly, it was one of those episodes that reminded me what I like about this business—the moments where you drop the sales pitch and get real about what's working, what's not, and what it means to stay relevant without selling out. David Slay is exactly the kind of guest that keeps me hungry for the next conversation. While the rest of the world is going through a heatwave, California's temperature has stayed relatively mild this week. But it's still summer and the sun is still out, so what better way to take advantage of LA's good weather than a cup of ice cream? Not just any ice cream, though. Today on AirTalk, we're trying New Zealand-style ice cream with Creamy Boys, a perfect blend of fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream. Joining us is the founder and CEO of Creamy Boys, Duncan Parsons. Maybe we'll get to the bottom of what makes their soft serve so creamy. Reaching out to Polly to have a chat about coming on Wine Talks, was like a breath of fresh air. Podcasting takes great effort and a conscious effort to be better and to look for guests that can add to the entertainment and education value of the show. I could have just as easily recorded our pre-call and published that as a podcast. I think you will find Polly intriguing, inspiring and knowledgable. Polly Hammond would be the first to admit she never gets nervous on podcasts—until, of course, she landed on Wine Talks with Paul K., reminiscing about youthful memories in Hermosa Beach and realizing just how close to home a conversation about wine could truly feel. In this episode, listeners are in for much more than a stroll down California's scenic, wine-soaked memory lanes. You'll dive deep with Polly, CEO and founder of Five Forests Wine Consultancy, as she shakes up entrenched ideas about what keeps wine regions—and the wider wine business—buzzing and relevant. Expect lively debate about the value of tradition and typicity, a behind-the-scenes look at loyalty and wine clubs in the digital age, and a wake-up call about the risks of letting marketing run on autopilot. Polly challenges brands to not just hand down goals to marketers, but to invite them into the boardroom, making a compelling case for why the future of wine depends on personal, empathetic connection with consumers instead of faceless macro-data. Along the way, you'll pick up eyebrow-raising stories—like how middle-aged moms became surprising champions of 19 Crimes, or why a thriving direct mail business in the '90s can teach us crucial lessons for today's digital dilemma. Whether you're a wine lover wondering how your own preferences evolve, or an industry stalwart trying to keep pace with Gen Z's changing tastes and the existential threat of e-commerce to the old wine club model, this episode peels back the curtain on the emotional, psychological, and practical realities facing wine today. Overpowering Emotions Podcast: Helping Children and Teens Manage Big Feels
What if emotional health wasn't something we “talked about” but something kids could actually practice—every single day? In this episode, Rafael McMaster of Indivisible Arts joins Caroline to share the 7 practical tools his nonprofit teaches Gen Z and Gen Alpha youth to build emotional strength, self-awareness, and authentic connection. They explore why most kids say “I'm fine” when they're not, how screens and social pressure are rewiring the teen brain, and what it really takes to build emotional resilience from the inside out. You'll hear how even young kids ae learning to recognize unhelpful thought loops, shift their mindset with tools like G-flipping, and create meaning through creativity and connection.Perfect for educators, parents, and mental health professionals ready to move beyond theory and give youth tools they'll actually useHomework IdeasLearn and Practice the 7 Tools Yourself• Awareness: Notice recurring patterns of emotions. • Acceptance: Let go of needing things to be different right now.• Intention: Set a daily intention using feeling-based language.• G-Flip: Reframe a frustration into a gratitude-based statement.• Compassion: Show yourself the kindness you'd give your child.• Forgiveness: Write one letter to release resentment (even if you never send it).• Connection: Schedule a creative or awe-filled moment—walk in nature, make art, or sit in stillness.Start “Tool Talks” With Youth• Ask: “Which tool do you think we both need today?”• Practice one together for 5 minutes before bed or after school. Tatiana Weston-Webb returns to The Lineup to unpack her journey around the world and celebrate her latest film with the late, great Greg Browning. Recorded in New Jersey fresh off a Mentawais boat trip, Tati reflects on stepping away from full-time competition after two Olympic cycles and rediscovering her love of surfing away from the pressure of the jersey. She speaks candidly about her mindset on and off tour, knowing she is a World Title contender at her best, and the surreal joy of scoring perfect Kandui with her husband. She is later joined by producers Scott Smith and John De Temple to celebrate the premiere of their deeply personal and visually stunning new film with the indelible Greg Browning–A Marble in the Jar. The crew dive into the genesis of the film—a project that began with Greg's vision and passion. With a treasure trove of footage spanning years, the team recounts the wild, creative ride of making the movie, from smashing jars of marbles in Scott's backyard to experimenting with four different intros, all in pursuit of honoring Greg's dream. They reflect on the unguarded, fearless spirit that defined both Greg and Tatiana, and how the bond they shared helped shape the emotional core of the project. As Scott poignantly shares, “Greg knew his time was short, but he was 100% behind it all—he went full director mode.” From Instagram fan questions to lightning-round favorites, Tati closes with a powerful reminder to “focus on the small wins throughout the day–aka–a marble in the jar.” We love you Greg! Bill would protect immigrant children from President-elect Donald Trump's stated plan for mass deportationsTorrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, introduced Assembly Bill 49, a bill that would protect immigrant children from actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who enter school sites or child care facilities. The bill would prohibit school or child care employees from allowing ICE officers to enter a school site or child care facility for any purpose without providing valid identification, a written statement of purpose, a valid judicial warrant, and approval from the school district's superintendent or director of the child care center. The bill also would require that if an ICE official meets the requirements to enter a school site or child care facility, their access would be restricted to school or child care facilities where students or children are not present."All children have a constitutional right to attend public schools, regardless of immigration status," stated Assemblymember Muratsuchi. "Unfortunately, the threat of federal immigration officials coming onto school grounds to detain undocumented students or family members casts a shadow of fear over all California students. Students cannot learn if they are living in fear of being deported or separated from their family members. This bill is necessary because children should not be afraid to come to school, and parents should not be afraid to send their children to school."As during his first term, there is an increased fear of raids by ICE officials at schools and child care centers as President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to deport millions of undocumented immigrants across the United States. President-elect Trump has also threatened to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. According to the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction's office, this closure would risk around $8 billion in federal funds for California programs serving students with disabilities and low-income students.Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi represents California's 66th Assembly District, which includes El Segundo, Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, San Pedro and Torrance. Muratsuchi is Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace, and a member of the Committees on Budget, Budget Subcommittee on Education, Higher Education, Natural Resources, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Climate Change Policies.
After years of relentless touring, financial hardship, lineup changes, and violence, Hermosa Beach hardcore pioneers Black Flag finally unleashed their debut full-length Damaged in 1981.With 20-year-old newcomer Henry Rollins entering the fold, the band delivered genre-defining anthems like “Rise Above” and “Police Story” while also pushing boundaries on the raw, experimental “Damaged I & II.”Conflicts over the album's distribution sparked a lawsuit from the label, ultimately delaying the release of their equally influential (and polarizing) follow-up. Nevertheless, Damaged stands as the product of Black Flag's blood, sweat, and defiance, and remains a towering pillar in punk history!Recommendations:Salome - SalomeSalome - TerminalThou / Salome - Our Enemy CivilizationThanya Iyer - TIDE/TIEDMachine Head - The More Things Change...Propagandhi - At PeaceFor all updates on Riff Worship follow us on Instagram and TwitterWatch Riff Worship on YouTubeWatch Review's from the Dylbozer's DinCheck out our official playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

We lost two Minneapolis icons in the last month, and this week’s episode is a tribute to both. After suffering a sever stroke in 2012, Slim held on for well over a decade before passing away on December 18, 2024. Besides a couple of great tributes to the man by The Mad Ripple and The Walk Offs, this episode features music Slim created with Curtiss A, The Replacements, and as a solo artist. There’s also a couple of sets of cover tunes from the wonderful Songs For Slim tribute series, along with a surprising superstar cover that debuted on Sirius shortly after his death. On January 5, 2025, former Suburbs singer/guitarist Beej Chaney accidentally died during a swim in the Pacific Ocean near Hermosa Beach, California. The last half hour of the broadcast features a sampling from all of the groundbreaking band’s releases on Twin/Tone and A&M Records. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the passing of these legends. For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Lorie Ladd joins the podcast to breakdown the 5D shift, Trump's role as a lightworker, opening the heart, embracing polarity and more. In this interview, Lorie explains the concept of light codes and their activation in the human body, as well as the fall from grace and the journey back to Earth's initial blueprint of the fifth dimension. The conversation explores the concept of breaking free from the systems and programming that control us and the role of lightworkers in this process. Lorie Ladd knew at the age of 13 that she was here to assist in this human evolution. She was walking down the street in a cute beach town called Hermosa Beach, wearing her worn out flip flops, and she heard this loud whisper outside of her say, “You are here to assist humanity through their evolution”. She knew this message was her Divine blueprint and that she was here on the Planet for something greater than she understood. It took her about 30 more years to courageously commit to that Divine message, letting go of any idea of how she thought my life would play out. In 2016 she moved from Marin County, CA where she was an executive assistant and cocooned myself into the small town of Mount Shasta, CA. It was here she launched her own platform and began to teach about the evolution in human consciousness, reaching millions of people. Eighteen months later she travelled to Machu Picchu where she received the download for her book "The Divine Design," an international best seller. ___________________ PODCAST CHAPTERS 00:00 - Lorie Ladd Intro 01:18 - Living as Soul and Body 05:09 - Experiencing Jesus' Compassion 14:53 - The State of Humanity's Suffering 20:10 - Opening Humanity's Heart 24:47 - Light Codes and Human Evolution 31:04 - The Role of DNA and Higher Dimensions 41:48 - The Human Impact on Earth's Frequency 48:44 - Lightworkers and Their Mission 57:08 - Trump as a Lightworker & System Breaker 01:02:44 - The Emerging New Consciousness 01:06:32 - Overcoming Fear 01:08:49 - Navigating the Puppet Show of Current Systems 01:10:01 - The Role of Community 01:11:09 - The Domino Effect of System Breakdowns 01:12:36 - Breaking Free from Systems 01:14:00 - Glimpse Into Emilio's Awakening and Journey 01:16:17 - Realizing the Purpose of Lightworkers 01:21:18 - Lori's Soul Awakening in Kenya 01:32:55 - Balancing Polarity and Creating Equilibrium 01:43:54 - Encouraging Humanity's Transformation 01:44:56 -The Lion's Symbolism and Humanity's Evolution 01:55:48 - Time Capsule for Future Leaders ___________________ Guest: Lorie Ladd | Human Evolution Website | https://lorieladd.com/ The Divine Design Book | https://lorieladd.com/the-divine-design Untangled YouTube Series | https://lorieladd.com/untangled Kenya Trips with Lorie Ladd | https://lorieladd.com/africa-waitlist Lorie's Online Patreon Community | https://lorieladd.com/patreon Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/lorie_ladd/ YouTube | @LorieLadd Host: Emilio Ortiz Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/iamemilioortiz/ Subscribe to YouTube Channel | @EmilioOrtiz Watch Emilio's latest series on 4biddenknowledge TV l https://bit.ly/AwakenThe6thSense Shop Our Clothing Collection l https://www.unlockedmovement.com/collections/justtapin ___________________ Special Offerings to Support the Show: ✦ Make a One-Time or Recurring Donation on PayPal

This week's episode is sponsored by Fine Lines, a west coast wholesale rep agency with showrooms in Las Vegas and Seattle representing over 50 fabulous gifts, fashion + home lines.Along with his partner Bryce, Andrew Gawdun runs the shop curious... in Hermosa Beach, CA. Andrew started his journey in Colorado at a young age before moving to Nevada with family and then Southern Utah for a few years in his early 20's. He launched himself into the world of photography, where he opened his own business and then relocated it to Southern California. During the spring of 2012, Bryce and Andrew met at curious... in Hermosa Beach, where Bryce was sanding wood for a table he was building. They started dating, and soon Bryce convinced Andrew to help with the stationery buying for curious… Hermosa Beach. It was all over then. In November of 2015, Andrew and Bryce married as well as started the adoption process. 2017 June led to the opening of curious… Kauai. After a truck drove through the new location, a month after opening, they spent the next 4 months refocusing the vibe of the Kauai location and making sure they had better wall security. curious… Kauai reopened November 2017. By May of 2018, Andrew and Bryce flew to Missouri to adopt their daughter Willow. During the early part of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe and altered life and business. Andrew, Bryce, and Willow managed to head back to Kauai for the spring season in early March, but like everyone else in the U.S., they were put under Stay-at-Home Orders. During those two months, they launched their online store and came to the tough decision to downsize from two brick and mortars to just one. After careful consideration, they closed the Kauai, HI, location just shy of 3 years open. This meant also a move from their home on the island as well. Andrew and Bryce know they'll return to the island one day, but in the meantime, they're enjoying life full time in Hermosa Beach, CA.Here, Andrew shares the history of the store and how it evolved over the years. Coming to Hermosa Beach was meant to be my escape, a breather after the storm of my divorce. I was here to relish the Memorial Day festivities, not to trip down memory lane.
