The use of force in law enforcement is a critical and often controversial topic. Traditional methods, such as prone restraint, have come under scrutiny due to their potential for escalating situations and causing harm. As the landscape of policing evolves, there is a growing need for innovative techniques that prioritize safety, effectiveness and de-escalation. In this episode of Policing Matters, host Jim Dudley is joined by returning guest Rener Gracie, a prominent figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the head of Gracie University. Rener introduces the SafeWrap system, a groundbreaking technique developed to address the shortcomings of traditional prone restraint methods used by law enforcement. With his extensive experience in training officers, Rener discusses how SafeWrap can transform police practices, reduce injuries and build better relationships between law enforcement and the public. Gracie reveals a common trend where individuals, particularly men, find themselves returning to Jiu-Jitsu classes after a hiatus prompted by work obligations, illustrating the positive influence it has on personal relationships. Matt and Jim are joined by 4th-ranked UFC featherweight Brian Ortega and real-estate TV personality Tarek El Moussa on this episode of UFC Unfiltered. Today's show is one marked by a series of brief cameos — beginning with Mrs. Serra briefly joining her husband in the show's intro and shortly thereafter with Ortega hopping on the call alongside coach Rener Gracie. Looking to get back to his winning ways in his first fight since injuring his shoulder 19 months ago, Ortega reflects back on what went right for him in the cage against Yair Rodriguez in his last fight before the untimely injury put an unceremonious end to the contest. A proud Mexican American set to fight in his parents' home country for the first time in his career, Ortega gets candid about what it means to be in the co-main slot of Saturday's card in Mexico City against a Mexican-born fighter like Yair Rodriguez — especially now that there are added title implications with Ilia Topuria as the UFC's newly-crowned featherweight champion. Then, Jim and Matt are joined by real-estate TV star Tarek El Moussa, who begins his interview with a stroll down memory lane of how he became a UFC superfan before explaining the details of his incredible life story captured eloquently in his newly-released book titled: “FLIP YOUR LIFE: How to Find Opportunity in Distress - in Real Estate, Business, and Life”. When Tarek hops off the call, the guys wrap up the show with some picks for the two rematches atop Saturday's card, Ortega's fight against Yair Rodriguez in the co-main event and Brandon Moreno's rematch against Brandon Royval in the main event.
Jiu-jitsu master Rener Gracie details leveraging martial arts principles in business and relationships. He recounts a scathing review from a mother whose child had a terrible first class. Gracie exemplifies the Japanese concept of understanding an opponent's balance before attacking it. Instead of defending his school, he intently listened to fully grasp the woman's perspective. After validating her experience, Gracie ensured changes so it wouldn't repeat. His yield-focused, non-combative approach completely shifted the interaction. He advocates seeking to understand first, accepting responsibility regardless of fault. This wisdom enabled turning an critic into an advocate.LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE!Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!

Do Business. Do Life. — The Financial Advisor Podcast — DBDL
I recently got an opportunity to interview Rener Gracie – a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, coach, author and entrepreneur. If you're unfamiliar with the Gracie family, they are widely regarded as one of the most accomplished family dynasties in martial arts history. Ok, so what does Jiu-Jitsu have to do with financial advising? Well, for starters, BJJ is a complex sport with thousands of techniques and moves. Not only can learning the moves be challenging, but knowing which ones to use and when to use them, can get overwhelming quickly. As Rener says, “the right move at the wrong time, is the wrong move.” I see a lot of parallels with financial services. As an advisor, you need to be able to ditch the financial jargon and simplify the information in a way that's easy for your clients to understand. You also have to be able to guide your clients on which tools and strategies to use depending on their specific situation. What's also interesting about Rener is that he's been able to scale his BJJ schools across the country AND he's mastered the art of creating online content to help feed that growth. So, when it comes to building an online community and attracting your ideal audience, Rener's got a lot of wisdom to share! 3 of the biggest insights from Rener Gracie … How Rener grew his YouTube channel, The Gracie Breakdown, to 870k subscribers and 196 million views – and how he leveraged his channel to build an online community of 380k paying students. 3 Jiu-Jitsu principles that you can use to motivate others, resolve conflict, and overcome big obstacles in both your business and life. In this episode of the podcast, Sam Harris speaks with Rener Gracie about police procedure and about the special relevance of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for safely controlling resisting suspects. Rener Gracie is a third-generation member of the legendary Gracie Family credited with creating the self-defense system known as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He started learning the family craft at two years old, and he was 10 years old when his father created the UFC. Today, Rener is the co-owner and chief instructor at the Gracie University of Jiu-Jitsu, the global jiu-jitsu organization headquartered in Southern California. With over 180 brick-and-mortar locations worldwide, and over 300,000 students learning via the interactive online jiu-jitsu portal (GracieUniversity.com), Rener has dedicated his life to sharing jiu-jitsu with the world. In recent years, Rener has become a central figure in the discussion surrounding police use of force in the United States. With over 20 years of experience teaching law enforcement professionals, he presents compelling data that substantiates the need for more training for police officers at a time when many are fighting to “defund the police,” which would accomplish the exact opposite. We discuss the hit piece article against Rener Gracie and how to come back after a hiatus.
What a perfect way to end the year with one of my heroes, a pioneer of the art, and godfather of the Kimura Trap System, David Avallen. 100 years ago before I started Jiu Jitsu I bought two DVD sets (yes I said DVD sets) just to get an idea of what Jiu Jitsu could offer, one of them was David's Kimura Trap System, it was fantastic and holds up to this day. David and his brother Marcos were early pioneers in the evolution of Jiu Jitsu systems thinking, online marketing and they predate the term MMA with what they used to call it, No Holds Barred Fighting. David has grappled all over the world and has wins against other legends in the art like Rafael Lovato Jr., Roberto Cyborg Abreu, Rener Gracie, and Alexander "Xiande" Ribeiero. Today they still own the highly acclaimed Freestyle Fighting Academy in South Florida which they opened in 2001 and David also consults some of the best combat athletes in the world out of his new Las Vegas location. It was such an honor to have David on the show, he is such a wealth of knowledge and in this episode, we discuss his observations on training methodologies, nutrition, mindset and so much more. We could have gone on and on for hours, David will be back on the show for sure, as there is so much more value he can offer us. In the meantime check him out at Davidvallen.com for all his socials and offerings. Some housekeeping items, in the episode we refer to the original Kimura Trap System DVD box set which I hold up a few times but obviously, on audio, this may lose some context.
