Richard Bresler, a sixth-degree black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Rorion Gracie's first student in LA, shares insights into some of the most historic events in martial arts. ICHARD BRESLER is widely recognized as the first student of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the USA. For almost twenty years he worked closely alongside Rorion Gracie, helping to grow Jiu-Jitsu through the Gracie Garages, the Gracie Academy, and the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He was one of the first Americans to earn a teaching certificate through the original Instructor Certification Program at the Gracie Academy, and one of the first Americans to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He still teaches Jiu-Jitsu and practices alternative healing in Los Angeles, California.

Richard Bresler talks about his new book, the early days with Rorion Gracie, efficacy of Krav Maga in self defense and why Judo struggles against BJJ.

Extreme poverty has devastating effects on over 700 million people globally. Every year 5.3 million children, under the age of five, die, and more than half of these deaths could have been easily prevented if they would have been fortunate enough to have been born in the United States. Peter Singer has famously noted that “we have an ethical obligation to use some portion of our wealth and privilege to save lives and reduce the unnecessary suffering associated with extreme poverty—defined as living on less than $1.25 USD/day.” Almost a decade ago, Charlie Bresler became volunteer Executive Director and co-founder of The Life You Can Save, a non-profit dedicated to reducing extreme poverty. Through his financial support and leadership, Charlie has helped Peter Singer, develop the organization from the ground up. The Life You Can Save's mission is to inspire more people to give effectively and end world poverty. And Charlie has famously said that it's a privilege, not just a responsibility to save lives, reduce suffering, and empower livelihoods. The “amplification” of how much further a dollar goes in impoverished countries is the perspective Singer and Charlie suggest should affect our giving decisions. The effective altruism movement has reignited thinking how much we should give and where. “What greater motivation can there be than doing whatever one possibly can to reduce pain and suffering?” Charlie is a heroic figure that lives his ethos and life in full, and in the service of others.

I was pleased to have Amanda Bresler and Alex Bresler back on the podcast to discuss their newest Naval Postgraduate School symposium paper on the composition of small businesses in the defense industry. Amanda is the Chief Strategy Officer at PW Communications, and Alex is the Chief Data Officer. They found that small business funding grew 68 percent between 2015 to 2021, but at the same time the total number of small businesses shrank 23 percent. That can only mean the small business players are, on average, getting bigger. Indeed, the number of small businesses receiving more than $100 million per year in defense prime contracts grew three-fold over those six years (from 26 to 84). By comparison, the number of small businesses with less than $1 million fell 32 percent (from 34,205 to 23,337). This podcast was produced by Eric Lofgren. Dr. Jason Bresler is a pediatric dentist practicing out of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. His father originally started and grew the practice in 1982, and now Jason and his siblings and their spouses (5 Dr. Brasslers in total) own and operate this large practice. They have grown the practice to include eight pediatric offices, four orthodontic offices, over 30 associate dentists, 250 staff members, and along the way built their own surgery center. This stand-alone surgery center operates five days a week, with a full time nursing staff, pediatric anesthesiologists, and CRNAs. This allows two dentists to see 15 or more GA cases every day. We spent the majority of our conversation discussing how to set up a surgery center, regulatory differences, surgery center fees, and how a practice of this size is structured and operated. We also talk about what makes for a good associate pediatric dentist.
