Fitness pioneer and physical culture historian Dr. Ed Thomas (Viamilitaris, Indian Clubs, Inversion Training) joins me for ep56 of the Coach Fury Podcast! I first met Ed while assisting him, Phil Scarito and Brett Jones at an Indian Club Workshop in 2014. He’s one of the most interesting and intelligent people I’ve met and I’m grateful that he came on the show to share some of his wisdom with us. Dr. Thomas is largely responsible for the reintroduction and rise of Indian Club Swinging in popular fitness. We discuss the benefits of Indian Club and Inversion training, how fitness has evolved and devolved in the 1900s, how our school furniture is deforming our kids bodies, how sports negatively impacted school phys ed and so much more. You can see many of the videos we referenced and learn more from Dr. Thomas on his youtube channel: Viamilitaris www.youtube.com/channel/UCCIntHcL6tSgWW5eXsDX7TQ. As a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine Jack Gillen has helped all sorts of athletes and non-athletes from many different walks of life. Jack, a long time resident of Kona, Hawaii has studied the science of Indian Club Swinging for 22 years. Jack says, "While club swinging is an excellent, meditative workout, it also helps with sports training, injury prevention, rehabilitation and shoulder issues." It all started for Jack when in just a few weeks his shoulder that had been sore from playing water polo in high school was healed. Jack shares in a fun manner how Indian Club Swinging is a beautiful ancient martial art/brain exercise with incredible therapeutic qualities that can rejuvenate and regenerate range of motion for the entire shoulder girdle improving modern day sports such as golf, swimming, tennis, paddling, surfing and more. At the same time he shares how it can develop and increase skills like rhythm, ambidexterity, strength and flexibility. He shares some very interesting stories about Indian Club Swinging having been in the Olympics years ago. Jack is so passionate about the practice, he's renamed it Wave Chi Hawaiian Club Swinging (wavechi.com). He teaches at his home-based workout studio in Kaloko and at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. or will meet you wherever it works. I'm grateful for a session with Jack at the Old A several years ago and now use the clubs regularly. It is relaxing, fun and goes great with music. He loves to share his knowledge and talk story. He is available at 808 756-7073 or visit wavechi.com
