In this episode of Munsons at the Movies, we're joined once again by guest Munson, Matti Groll, to dive into the fascinating and unpredictable career of Aidan Gillen. From his Irish roots and struggles with auditions to his pinball-like journey through film and television, we leave no stone unturned. We rave about the impact of Sing Street, marvel at Gillen breaking Case's box office snapshot spreadsheet, and debate whether Gillen truly nails his accents. We notice an unmistakable trend of his portrayals of small-time villains in films and explore his performances in memorable shows like Queer as Folk, Game of Thrones, The Wire, and Peaky Blinders. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Will the Munsons drive it like they stole it? Listen to find out.

Amy Gillen's 13 year old son Tanner's right hand stopped working while he was taking a quiz at school in February of 2018 and shortly thereafter he experienced Drop Foot. Then the right side of Tanner's body started to become paralyzed, and he was taken to St. Louis Children's Hospital by ambulance where he was diagnosed with a stroke, which Amy knew was the incorrect diagnosis. Finally Tanner was given an MRI and the correct diagnosis of a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Brain Tumor was its result. Tanner passed away from this Brain Cancer at the age of 14 on January 23rd of 2019, exactly 6 years ago today.

You give the audience what they want. And back then, they couldn't get enough Crosstown Shootout coverage. The rivalry had hate. It had characters. It had attitude. It has none of that today. I'm talking about from the players and coaches. The animosity is still there among a faction of long-time fans. The game itself is always sold out, intense and raucous. No fan will leave Fifth Third Arena on Saturday afternoon saying the game has lost its luster. But several factors have quashed the pregame hype, and it seemed to start to diminish after polarizing coach Bob Huggins left UC in 2005. Huggins let his players speak their minds to reporters. Terry Nelson guaranteed the Bearcats would " blow out" Xavier in the 1992 Crosstown Shootout, telling then-Post reporter Bill Koch: “Xavier doesn't have a chance.” The Bearcats did, indeed, blow out Xavier. Having characters like UC coach Bob Huggins involved in the Crosstown Shootout was what made it special, columnist Jason Williams writes. In 1994, Huggins refused to shake hands with then-XU coach Pete Gillen after the Musketeers won at Cincinnati Gardens. It set a tone for a decade of deep disdain from Musketeers players and fans toward Huggins and UC. Along came Xavier coach Skip Prosser, who played the role of the friendly, book-reading, Guinness-drinking Irishman and always played nice with Huggins in public. Things are more buttoned-up regarding the media now. Coaches and players are coached to be respectful of opponents in media interviews and social media posts. That's not specific to UC and Xavier. College sports are more corporate today. If there are any big, brash personalities like Nelson on the current Xavier and UC rosters, we don't see (or hear) about it during Crosstown Shootout week. Coaches Sean Miller of Xavier and Wes Miller of UC are polished, like so many of today's college basketball coaches. They aren't larger-than-life media personalities like Huggins, Gillen and Prosser were.

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week legendary X-Writer Kieron Gillen joins our host Lodro Rinzler for a very special episode entitled "The X-Office is an Anarchist Commune." We discuss, not surprisingly, what it was like behind the scenes during the recent Krakoa era, the Fall of X, and how Xavier was right (?). Kieron was born right as Thunderbird died so we dive into the epic story told in X-Men 94 + 95. Also in this episode: - Kieron has emotional contraceptives for that the overlap between Hickman and Gillen writing styles the X-Men are forged into...the Breakfast Club the death and rebirth of Thunderbird how Count Nefaria is somehow the primary x-villain this season on the show In the Q&A section we cover who the DJ was on Krakoa, how Selene loves to eat people and what the X-Men would be like as a sitcom. Also: Power Fantasy, Kieron's BRAND NEW comic, is out...TODAY! Go get it! Like, today today! Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic creator with his 2006's Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. Jamie and he formed into a gestalt monster that rampaged against the next fifteen years of comics, culminating with critical and smash hit the Wicked + the Divine. When not with Jamie, he has co-created books such as DIE, The Ludocrats, Once & Future, Three, Uber and more. When not making his own worlds, he has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Uncanny X-Men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). You can follow along with Kieron's work by buying Power Fantasy TODAY(!) and signing up for his newsletter here. Episode 274 Author: Brendan Gillen Book: Static -- On this episode I welcome author Brendan Gillen to discuss his new novel Static. Brendan shares his insights on character development, the creative process, and the importance of persistence in the face of challenges. Great chat, great book! Thanks for listening. Kyler --- Static Synopsis: For Paul, stealing is easy. When he's hungry, he strolls into a bodega and steals lunch. When rent's due, he steals records and flips them for cash. As a lonely kid growing up in Ohio's Rust Belt, stealing was the only way he could score the hip hop records and production equipment that fueled his musical dreams. Now he's in NYC fighting to keep his once-ascendant band alive and his life from falling apart. His bank account is flatlining. The love of his life has broken his heart. Bunky, his bandmate, is ditching him for Eloise, a soulful vagabond with an intoxicating voice. When financial trouble forces his parents from their lifelong home, Paul ramps up his stealing to save his family from collapse. And in a fever of creativity, he begins to steal from the voices in his life to make the music he's sure will save his soul. Set against the modern music industry, where a single social post can change your destiny, STATIC is alive to the weight of familial expectations, the pursuit of our deepest hopes and dreams, and the struggle to make meaningful connections in the anxiety of the digital age. The film industry had to adjust a lot since the hit of COVID. Thanks to streaming services, the hit wasn't as volatile as could be. Now that society seems to be reaching the end of the pandemic, the future of the filmmaking and film experience post-COVID has become part of the conversation. To help us explore the subject, I have on the show today, seasoned filmtrepreneur and award-winning producer, Anne Marie Gillen.Anne Marie is the CEO of Gillen Group--- an entertainment consulting firm in Los Angeles. Production-wise, she's credited for producing commercially and critically successful films and television shows. Coupled with an international network of studios, distributors, and talent, one may call her, The Plug.During the stages and succession of my career, she's ranked C-suite executive positions at big entertainment companies like Development & Production at Entertainment Business Group, Electric Shadow Productions, and Revelations Entertainment. Her comedy-drama film, Fried Green Tomatoes produced in 1991, is an all-time classic and stands to have been a Box office success. It grossed $119.4 million on an $11 million budget and was nominated for two Academy Awards. The film tells the story of a housewife, Evelyn Couch, unhappy with her marriage, befriends an elderly lady in a nursing home, and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know. Through Idgie's inspiring life, Evelyn learns to be more assertive and builds a lasting friendship of her own with Ninny. Anne Marie compiled her business expertise in the industry and her production experience to write The Producer's Business Handbook (2010, 3rd edition). The book was followed by her next film, Parallel Man: Infinite Pursuit, in 2014. Chased by commandos, Agent Nick Morgan is on the run in the multiverse! To escape, he jumps between parallel Earths including a polluted industrial hellscape, a planet where dinosaurs evolved into humanoids, and a fungi world with giant mushrooms.Your corporate minds will definitely enjoy this interview. I've linked Anne Marie's book, The Business of Show Business for Creatives, in the show notes for you to check out. Enjoy my conversation with Anne Marie Gillen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

To start, this episode will air just a few days before Ultimates #1 comes out, how excited are you to see fan reactions? Can you talk a little bit about how you snagged the writing gig for Ultimates? By all accounts this seems like the most important book as far as worldbuilding is concerned. With a few scripts under your belt, is there a specific Ultimate/Avenger you enjoy writing the most? Were you a fan of the original Ultimates and the line at the time? The FCBD story you wrote gives us a lot of hints as to the whereabouts of heroes, I was curious, how much of those required Wil Moss to check as far as green lighting things, or do you have full reign to erase or delete a character from this timeline?Pie in the sky, is there a character that floats to the top you're excited to dig into, and if it's a spoiler, can you give a hint as to who they might be? 19:0020:26Juan Frigeri is no slouch when it comes to big superhero action, was there a panel or page he blew you away with, so far?I was a big fan of your Children of the Vault miniseries, which frankly had some mind bending ideas at work. Did writing that help you gear up for Ultimates in any way?Does the Ultimate Universe office have a slack going? Are you all digging into each others scripts and keeping tabs?At this point 20th Century Men is iconic in a lot of ways, for fans of Ultimates, why should they check it out?

Guess what! Caryn has offered to host a Values Workshop for my listeners and students! You won't want to miss this. Register now by clicking here. Caryn Gillen helps coaches build spacious lives and businesses so they can live the dream they had when they first became coaches. I was honored to have this casual conversation with her for this episode, during which I had so many aha moments as we talked about values and how they shape our businesses. Plus, I asked all the questions to get her take on how we use values to organize everything from our digital files to our processes and decisions. The key moments in this episode are: What are values? Where do they come from? Caryn defines "values." How do we figure out what our values are? Caryn shares two questions to ask yourself: When was there a time in my life when I felt out of alignment? Angered? Stuck? When was there a time in my life when I was totally in flow? Electric? How do our values manifest in our business, and what is the best way to intentionally use them? How do we use values as we coach our clients? What do I do when two values come up against each other? Caryn is a master at asking questions. She shares some intriguing ways to help yourself and your clients. The itchy sweater exercise... so good! Some of my favorite things she says are: "Someday is here!" Cozy pants. "Values are here for you to expand." As these things happen when we are on the road, we met a Canadian in Ostend, Belgium. Radio Juxtapoz was on the road for the annual Crystal Ship and as we love with the mural festivals we get to see the process, the ideas and the creation of so many works from so many different practices. Katie Green creates masks, what she calls "intimate watercolour personas that are eerie and ethereal." On a mural level, this requires participation and something quite unique. Her project, as she notes on her IG, "is a community driven process which uses handmade masks as a way to build community, find healing, and explore aspects of self. By designing and wearing a mask, invited participants are given the opportunity to present society with an internal, alternate, or imagined part of themselves. The mask creates a safe space—both expressive and anonymous—to share oneself with the outside world."Like Ostends' beloved James Ensor, "Katie uses masks as a symbol for intrigue. Masks are a passageway between what we perceive on the outside and the mystery of what lies beyond. In Ensor's work, his masks are unpredictable and we are invited to befriend our own imaginations as we ponder the hidden subjects. In this project masks become an extension of self, where each participant is guided through a curated process that brings them closer to their internal landscape." So for Crystal Ship, Green worked with the community to create masks, and chose this particular mask as an ode to the city and Ensor's work. And we have her on this episode of Radio Juxtapoz. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 137 was recorded by Gillen in Ostend in April 2024 during Crystal Ship. It can seem like life coaches are a dime a dozen these days. The truth is, the industry has become pretty saturated and if you're a coach, the current business landscape can feel a little daunting. That's why it's more important than ever for you to double down on your commitment to transforming lives - while also building and growing a sustainable business that really works for (and with) your own life. I invited Caryn Gillen, a fellow life and business coach to join on me on the show to talk all things coaching - what it really means to be a coach, building a successful coaching business, navigating the current industry landscape, loving your clients and doing whatever it takes to do the work that you know you're meant to be doing in the world. In “Staying In The Coaching Game” Caryn and I are diving deep into some transparent talk about becoming and being a successful coach. The adaptation of Thrawn Alliances ends with a cliffhanger and what's surely to be another four-issue mini-series collecting the second half of the Timothy Zahn novel. In Darth Vader #45, Enric Pryde proves his mettle -- and loyalty -- to Vader, despite his fellow Schism Imperial members' bewilderment.
