For episode 94 of the Coach Fury podcast, we take a facts and science based look at the safety of gyms during the pandemic with Kevin Godfrey (TrustedSafe, New York Fitness Coalition, FitnessSafe, United States Fitness Coalition). Consulting with schools, restaurants, hotels and government facilities, Kevin is an expert in the field and was directly involved in creating New York’s safety guidelines. While many people have their opinions about the virus and the safety of gyms, Kevin has a direct line with state officials and can actually speak to what’s going on from both the gym and government perspectives. We also dive into the best cleaning products and protocols for your business. Listen to this one. You can learn more about Kevin, the USFC, NYFC and TrustedSafe at the following links. One of the main people responsible for getting gyms open in New York joins me on the Coach Fury Podcast. Please welcome Charlie Cassara (SC Fitness, New York Fitness Coalition, USFC) to episode 91! The Coach Fury Podcast is back! We swung for the fences with this week’s guest Doug Carrion (Field Day, Dag Nasty, Descendents). This episode was recorded in June (sorry for the delay Doug). NYC was just entering phase 1 or reopening, Black Lives Matters protests were going strong and things seemed extra chaotic. My favorite episodes are the ones where I struggle to verbalize my own opinions because they are evolving in the moment. With everything going in the country, it was the perfect timing for some of Doug’s positive energy. We had a great conversation about punk rock, flow, style, parenting, personal growth and his new band Field Day. There are many buzzwords thrown around the fitness industry these days. Words like: inclusive, empowering and authentic. Don’t get me wrong, these are important characteristics to create a positive training space. However, it seems like they are often being used as a sale tool instead of an actual belief system. In the same vein, the use of Body Positive and Body Positivity are gaining visibility. These are huge concepts that deserve much attention. Yet, as you’ll hear from me in this podcast, they are much more difficult to wrap your head around. With that, it’s extra distressing when the notion of body positivity is used flippantly as a sales mechanism. Team Fury’s own Coach Meg Hopkins (Fury Industries, Thrive Tribe Movement) opens my eyes and melts my brain with our discussion about her role as body positive ally, battling her eating disorder, the true heart and message behind the movement and how common words, reactions and expectations in fitness can be damaging to some. 88 episodes in and this is the one that had me questioning my own thought process the most. That’s what I love about doing this show. It constantly reminds me that I don’t have all the answers. Taking direct steps toward actualizing a dream is terrifying. You try to come to terms with the risk and unknown, but it’s there. How well we cope with that fear is what defines us to a big degree. Rob Aguero-Hoffman (Lift Positive Fitness, Strength Faction Vet) and I open up on the overwhelming fear we felt in opening our businesses. Knowing that I was not alone in my fear and that Rob was seeing the light on the other side of the terror had a massive impact on me. Listen to hear how he helped himself and yours truly to venture forward. This one’s worth the listen in any field. Our fourth guest ever, Kristin Callahan (Strength Faction Vet, Fellow Strong Islander), returns for ep70! This episode is a great example of what I hope this show can be, two friends processing their thoughts while talking. Open, sometimes a bit dark, honest and real. Kristin and I discuss the fear, uncertainty and necessity of changing a situation you’re unhappy with, false perceptions of “success” in the fitness world, our coinciding social media purges, the difference between imitating and making something your own and much more. When I met Paul Taras Wolkowinski (Indian Clubs International, Mace/Gada Hero) this year, I was instantly impressed by his skill, strength and teaching style. I had a great time getting to know Paul as we discussed how he discovered Indian Club and Mace training, using Indian Clubs to stay strong during his battle with prostate cancer, launching Indian Clubs International with previous Coach Fury Podcast guest Kelly Manzone and future guest Kevin Rail and more. There’s a special bond between people involved with Indian Clubs. Yo Joe! Having survived a New York Comic Con virus bred by my fellow geeks, it’s a Fury only show for ep59 of the Coach Fury Podcast. In this ep, I talk about exploring NYCC 2018 with Films of Fury PodSquad member Jen Bartholomeo and my big find there, thoughts after assisting Josh Henkin at DVRT Restoration and Level 1 last weekend, why G.I. Joe toys are better than He-Man and Transformers, Tom Hardy in Venom, binge watching Fargo and Ozark, shed some light on social media fitness myths, and I answer William Sturgeon’s request to talk about how I got to where I am in this field. This is super geeky and hopefully a bit inspirational to my fellow coaches. Did you know that Coach Fury Podcast Tees are out now?
