I'm welcoming back filmmaker Simon Esler, who first appeared on this podcast back on episode 54 to discuss his documentary Cut: Daughters of the West. This time, we're diving into his new docuseries You Are Here, which explores the landscape of cognitive warfare—the idea that human cognition itself has become the most contested territory in modern conflict. We start with the chilling case of Barry Neufeld, a Canadian school board trustee who was fined $750,000 for refusing to believe that children can be born trapped in the wrong body—what the judge's ruling called "existential denialism." From there, we explore how Canada's human rights laws and conversion therapy legislation have embedded gender identity ideology into the legal framework, silencing detransitioners and punishing dissenters. Simon and I discuss how our minds are conditioned by narratives we've never examined, how meta-perceptions warp our view of political opponents, and what Iain McGilchrist's work on brain hemispheres reveals about Western cognitive vulnerability. We also get into the concept of cognitive entrenchment, moral inversion, and the historical parallels between modern ideological capture and ancient child sacrifice in Carthage. Simon shares what's next for his series and talks about the Reclaiming Birth Conference, where he's working to empower families to take back sovereignty over pregnancy and birth.Books mentioned in this episode:The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Emily Hoeven expected the towns hosting America's new data centers to be the angriest. She found the opposite. In a recent column for the San Francisco Chronicle — titled "'We were a dying little town': How Silicon Valley data centers are reshaping rural America" — she maps a strange disconnect: the dread over data centers looms large in the Bay Area, cradle of the artificial intelligence boom, while places bearing the weight, like Ellendale, North Dakota, have made their peace.

REVELATION EP7 THE MILLNNIUM THE FIG TREE AND OLIVE TREE AND VINE NOTES The Divine Strategist When we study the past and possible future of our planet, the sheer volume of global disruption often makes biblical prophecy feel like a chaotic sequence of stops and starts, failed drafts and last-minute divine corrections. But if we step back and view history through the word of God as the Divine Strategist, an amazing scriptural picture begins to emerge. At the centre of this divine/human earthly drama is the single glowing seed of Jesus, highlighted as the promised olive tree seed of faith made to one man called Abraham four thousand years ago - a master stroke, that through one lineage every family on earth would receive an eternal inheritance. And Jesus is also called the vine, and his followers are the branches So history is not drifting. It is an organised, predestined, calculated movement toward a specific and perfect goal. And by understanding God's Divine Countdown, we are taken out of confusion into a dazzling and daring clarity. To recognise what God is doing, and where we are standing in this countdown, we need to understand the roles of Abraham, Israel and the Gentile nations under their codenames as God's plant life. Abraham's plant codename is the root of the olive tree. Israel is both an olive tree and a fig tree. And then you have the Gentiles, the wild olive branches that are grafted into that olive tree. Now before we go any further, let's separate two of those trees, because they are not doing the same thing. Both the olive and the fig relate to Israel, but they operate in different spheres of God's administration. One is spiritual and covenantal - that's the olive tree. The other is national and geographical - that's the fig tree spoken of by Jesus in Matthew 24 and the national fig tree provides the historical stage upon which the wider spiritual strategy of the olive tree unfolds. When Jesus first came to his people the nation of Israel was also the olive tree of spiritual Israel, and he was rejected by both. Let's keep that fact in mind as we go because both the fig tree and the olive tree went through catastrophic change both spiritually and geographically. So we must first understand the nature of the olive tree we are compelled to read what Paul wrote in Romans - Romans 1I:1 ask, then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin. No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realise what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel and said, "LORD, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too." And do you remember God's reply? He said, "No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!" It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful (to Jesus) because of God's grace… And since it is through God's kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God's grace would not be what it really is - free and undeserved. Did God's people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles - the rest of the world. But he chose to have his own people become jealous and claim (his covenant favour) their own way for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel rejected God's offer of salvation through Jesus, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it. The Olive Tree So I want to ask some questions here. What does the olive tree speak of? Spiritual covenant Israel. What is the root? Abraham - one man. What is the seed? Jesus. And who are his fruit? All who live a new covenant life with Jesus by grace and faith. So that's the olive tree picture: Jesus the seed, Abraham the root, some branches get broken off and others get grafted in. I'll read those verses from Romans 11 shortly. But first look at The Fig Tree: the 1948 Prophetic Countdown Remember the fig tree speaks of National Israel now, not spiritual Israel, not the olive tree. Now in Matthew 24, as we discussed in the preceding episode 6 last week, Jesus gave us a specific marker for the end-of-the-age - when the fig tree begins to "put forth its leaves," the end is imminent. For two thousand years this tree was dormant -. But in 1948 things changed in the global landscape. When the Israeli flag was raised and the nation was physically restored to its land, the fig tree officially blossomed. So that historical event speaks of a ticking countdown clock. Jesus explicitly stated that the generation alive to witness this blossoming would not pass away before the fulfilment of all things. We are not just living in "interesting times." We are living in the final movement of a strategic timeline that began with that blossoming in 1948. The Divine Strategy: How Stumbling Led to Reconciliation So let's see how the stumbling of the original olive tree branches led to reconciliation. Israel's temporary fall was not a failure of God's plan. It became part of a larger strategy of judgement and mercy, and the hardening of their hearts was sovereignly repurposed to facilitate a wider reconciliation, not just for Israel but for the entire kosmos. The original olive branches lost faith in Jesus as God, and the fig tree lost its identity as a nation and was dispersed, and the wild olive branches of us as humanity were grafted in through Jesus into a new covenant that Israel had rejected. A note on replacement theology Now I want to make a note on what's called replacement theology. Gentiles do not replace Israel. There is only one olive tree, with branches temporarily taken off and other branches grafted in, and we Gentile believers are wild branches sustained by the original Abrahamic root of faith. Paul says it very plainly, and he says it as a warning: Romans 11:16 If the roots of this olive tree are holy, the branches will be, too. But some of these branches from Abraham's olive tree (elaia) - some people of Israel - have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree (agrielaios - earthy/Adamic), have been grafted in. So now you also receive the Abrahamic covenant blessing God promised Abraham and his children, to share in the rich nourishment from the root of God's special olive tree. But you must not brag that you were grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. You are just branches, not the root. Those branches were broken off because they didn't believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don't think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. For if God did not spare the original branches, he won't spare you either. Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree. You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree. So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into his cultivated tree, he will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong. So remember, the root is Abraham and we are the branches. And this grafting is tied to a physical timeline. The Unripe Figs of current national Israel Now that fig tree nation has had good times and bad times. And the good times are not good anymore, and the bad times are getting worse. And many of them may think they are a covenant olive tree - but they're not – not yet. And the book of Revelation makes this clear, because it speaks of the figs on the current fig tree in Israel, in Jerusalem, right now as unripe, immature figs at this present time since 1948. Revelation 6:12-17; 7:1-8 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its untimely figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Right now, let's look at that picture. The falling stars speak of believers losing their position with Christ through immaturity, lack of faith and compromise with the world, and the mighty wind shakes everything that can be shaken. That's the sixth seal. And we also have untimely figs, which speaks of the current National Israel - the figs are there, but they have not ripened. So the fig tree is not yet ready to occupy its promised land because it has maintained its rejection of the promised new covenant – and the olive branches are still broken off. And that promise was not vague. Let's hear what it was they turned down: Jeremiah 31:33 I will put My law in their minds and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; A new heart, and the law written on the inside of the mind. That is the new covenant fulfilled through Christ and foretold in the Abrahamic covenant of faith. So the immature believers and the unripe figs both face that fierce wind, which speaks of spiritual forces of darkness drawing them into the world's corrupt. And Hebrews tells us what the shaking is for: Hebrews 12:27 ...the removal of those things that are being shaken, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain. The Catalyst for Restoration: The Two Witnesses Now all of this loops around at the end, because Scripture says God will save all Israel. How? Who is going to come and preach to Israel? Well, two men called the two witnesses. They are actually called the two olive trees, which is very interesting, and their ministry brings National Israel back into the olive tree, the new covenant in Christ. Revelation 11:4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. It's a legal necessity. These figures are prophetically linked to Moses, who represents the Law, and Elijah, who represents the Prophets. And they met with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. I wonder what they said to him at that time. Israel's national, legal and spiritual identity is bound to the Law and the Prophets, and en masse the nation will only respond to a testimony that validates those foundational scriptures through these two witnesses. There is already a remnant that has accepted Jesus, and there are many people bringing Jewish people to the Lord, and that's fine. But these two have to come back and give their gospel testimony. I'll say more about them in later sessions. And through that testimony the fig tree is brought into olive tree ripeness. Israel hears, believes, and is provoked to reconciliation with their Messiah. Paul calls this a mystery and states it plainly: Romans 11 I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. God chose to allow the heart of Israel to be partly hardened and blinded, but this will last only until the full number of all the nations comes to Christ at the end. And then all Israel will be saved. As the Scriptures say, "The one who rescues will come from Zion, and he will turn Israel away from ungodliness. And this is my covenant with them, that I will take away their sins." Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the Good News, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they are still the people he loves because he chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For God's gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. So that's where the loop closes. The original branches are grafted back in, and the fig tree nation gets to share, finally, not just Canaan but the entire world with all believers in Jesus. Paul says that this brings life from the dead. And this final reconciliation sets the stage for the literal, physical return of Christ and the inauguration of a new era of governance - a thousand-year Millennium governance. So that leaves us with one question, and the rest of this message is about answering it. The Millennial Bridge: a thousand-year governance Revelation 20:4 They lived and reigned with him for a thousand years. Upon his return, Christ inaugurates a visible, physical reign on the earth for a literal thousand years. God's people live and reign with him, and this becomes the public vindication of God's word on the very earth that humanity fractured. The question is When? Because God has not left that vague either. And to get at it, we have to go all the way back - back past Abraham, and past the flood, to the seven days of creation So back to the days of creation because we have to go back to creation, particularly the sixth day of man and woman and the seventh day of sabbath rest. Because God foretold the millennium when he rested on the seventh day. Why did he rest – he wasn't fatigued – he wanted to enjoy his loving relationship with his beautiful and spectacular creation especially his human family. Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image; male and female he created them. Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! ... And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day. Genesis 2:1 So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy - set apart. There is an amazing parallel between the events of God's creative week and the six thousand years of God's plan of redemption since Adam fell - which brings us finally to the one thousand-year reign of Christ on earth with his people 2 Peter 3:8 But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. When those redemptive days are seen as periods of a thousand years, the pattern begins to unfold. 3. The Seven-Day Blueprint: Comparing Creation and Redemption The foundation of the Divine Countdown is the "Law of Inversion" established in 2 Peter 3:8: “One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” By this divine logic, the six days of creation and the seventh day of rest (the Week of Creation) serve as the literal blueprint for 7,000 years of human history (the Week of Redemption). The Week of Creation and the Week of Redemption So now we chart the week of redemption: seven thousand-year days laid across history. Six have run since Adam fell, and the seventh has not begun. Day The Week of Creation (Genesis 1-2) The Week of Redemption (Human History) Day 1 Separation of Light from Darkness. Man's sin and darkness separate him from God's light. Day 2 The Waters Divided. The Flood: Waters divide the old world from the new; 8 souls saved. Day 3 Plant Life Created. Abraham is called: The Father of the Olive, Fig, and Vine. Day 4 Sun, Moon, and Stars for signs/seasons. Elijah to Jesus: Era of signs; Jesus as the "Sun" and full Godhead. Day 5 Birds and Fish: "Be fruitful and multiply." Pentecost: The "Fishers of Men" and the Holy Spirit (Dove). No longer earthbound in life form. Day 6 Creation of Eve (Adam's Bride). Preparation of the Bride of Christ. Believers "eat of the truths of Israel" (1 Cor 10:11) to mature. Day 7 Sabbath Rest: God enjoys His creation. The 1,000-Year Millennium: Earth's rest and the visible reign of Christ. This blueprint allows us to discern with absolute precision where we currently stand on the timeline. The clock is no longer silent. And now the inversion Now somebody is going to say, what if the millennium is only one day and not a thousand years? Because Peter gives it both ways in the same verse: one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. So take it either way and you get the same result. That's the divine law of inversion. And the prophet Hosea does exactly that: he talks in days, but he is actually talking in one thousand year spans of time, speaking of the span from the time Jesus came too the earth the first time until he comes the second timeascension to the restoration. Hosea 5:15; 6:1-3 I will return again to My place till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; in their affliction they will earnestly seek Me. Come, and let us return to the LORD; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His sight. Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, like the former and latter rain to the earth. Now look at the verses. "I will return again to My place." That speaks of Jesus returning to his place at the ascension, and it gives us the starting point of the clock from inside the text itself, not from a date we have chosen. He says, "till they acknowledge their offense," so the condition of his return is their acknowledgement. And then, "In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me." "After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up." One day is with the Lord as a thousand years. So after two days - two thousand years - He will revive us, and on the third day (the Millennium) He will raise us up. This third day is also God's Millennial rest - Revelation 20:2-7 - to enjoy his creation in loving relationship and in redemption. Six days of work, and then a day that is blessed and set apart. So that seventh thousand-year day is still in front of us. Let us have a look at what the Millennium Will Actually Look Like (Isaiah chapters 11 and 12 and Isaiah 65 Isaiah 65:21-22 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit... Socioeconomic Stability: Citizens will build their own houses and plant their own vineyards, enjoying the fruit of their labor without fear of loss. Absolute Justice: Governance will be perfect, with absolute justice executed instantly, removing the corruption that plagues modern systems. Natural Pacification: The "curse" of the fall is reversed; the natural world is pacified, with the wolf living alongside the lamb So there is restoration even in the ordinary things of life - work, longevity, justice and creation itself. So that's the millennium. But the promise to Abraham doesn't finish there. The Final Transition: from Canaan to the Cosmos The Bible says in Romans 8 that the whole creation is waiting for this. It's groaning: Romans 8:19, 22 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God... For we know that the whole creation groans and labours with birth pangs together until now. And Paul makes the expansion very clear in Romans 4:13 when he describes Abraham as the heir of the world - kosmos. So the promise was never going to finish with one piece of land. In Christ it opens out until the inheritance is the renewed creation itself. That is why Jesus can say, "the meek shall inherit the earth." He is not cancelling the promise to Abraham; he is showing us where it was ultimately going. After the Millennium the heavenly Jerusalem descends to the earth and the new heavens and new Earth are forever established to flourish from age to age The Living Connection: the Olive Tree and the Vine Now I just want to come back to the vine before we close. The olive tree tells us where we belong in God's covenant story. But the vine speaks of intimacy - abiding, menō, in Christ and his life flowing through us. The olive tree gives us a share in the promises; the vine speaks of how we live in that inheritance and bear its fruit. When you're abiding in the vine, you're flowing in the life. And just notice Joel before we finish. The fig tree and the vine are stripped and then restored, the former and latter rain comes, and finally the language changes from an untimely fig to a harvest that is ripe. So the same pattern is there again - the trees, the rain, the ripening and the harvest. So just in closing, let's go back to where we started. One man, in a desert, and a promise about a seed. Everything since has been the working out of that one promise - the branches broken off and grafted in again, the fig tree revived, and finally the restoration of all things. It is not a sequence of corrections. It is a strategy. And it ends with the same picture made whole: the fig tree ripened, the original branches grafted back into the olive tree, and both drawing from the promise that began with Abraham. And Paul finishes Romans 11 by saying: Romans 11 For God has imprisoned all humanity in their disobedience so he could have mercy on everyone and give them all his pardon of freedom. Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the LORD's thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory in the Church. Mercy on everyone. That's the final climax of the grand design - the triumph of divine mercy over human disobedience and the restoration of all things in the new creation. So when you look out at a world marked by division and shifting borders, can you see the powerful, quiet triumph of a mercy that intends to restore the entire world?

Hi, it's Neil Cowmeadow here with episode 437 of The Tutor Podcast, the Monday morning shot of uncommon sense for anyone who wants start, grow and love their own tutoring, teaching and coaching business – the same way I love mine. As usual I've been rummaging through the ragbag of my mind and my notebooks, the ones I've made during all the courses, seminars, classes, webinars, conferences, field trips, research projects, books, trade press, videos and a ton of other stuff I've done over the years… Boiling it down to get at the good bits so I can give them to you in a no-nonsense, No BS kind of way... So I'm squeezing a little more juice out of it for myself, and –at the same time - sharing it with you here in the hope that it helps you have as much fun at work and in life as I do. And – of course - I'm not just here to talk, I'm listening - so if you have any ideas that might be worth sharing via the show – get in touch info@neilcowmeadow.com or on X where I am @TutorPodcast, and maybe you can help me to learn something new, something better? Because I'm smart enough to realise that I don't have all the answers, and if I rely on my own tiny, pea-sized brain to solve all of my problems…. Well..... If you're good with that, let's crack on... As you know – I'm a big fan of doing things differently – maybe I'm just contrary, odd, “unusual” or some other fancy-pants name for being open to being wrong. I'd settle for “contrarian”, because I've often found that doing the exact opposite of what miserable people do makes me happy, doing the opposite of what poor people do has made me money, and doing the opposite of what unsuccessful people do has made me successful… in my own terms. What that looks like is a very busy life which is mostly spent with people I love, doing things I enjoy… Years ago I worked with a couple of guys who were quite depressed. Being my usual, ridiculously optimistic self, I bounced around and tried to lift them up a bit – this was long before I got into NLP, coaching and hypnosis – before – even – I started my teaching business… ancient history! I used to watch what they did, how they moved when they were having good or bad days, how they eld themselves and the way they spoke… I was a nosey bugger, even back ten. You see I had an idea – not a very bright one, but hang in there with me, because I was young and uneducated then… The idea was that if I could see what they did, maybe I'd figure out why they were depressed… My brilliant idea worked!! I experimented with moving, standing, sitting, talking just like my two colleagues – and I got depressed!! Genius. After a while my little old brain decided it was bored with being a bit depressed and suggested (in one of my unguarded moments) that I should do the opposite of what I was doing – INVERT THE PROCESS that produced depression and start to study happy people, successful people… I did, and it worked… I got happier. Double-genius! They say that success leaves clues – well, so does failure. If you can figure out what it is that someone does that causes them to fail, thwarts their ambitions and steals their dreams, you can write a Failure Manual, based on your research. Likewise, figure out what successful people do, happy people do, healthy people do… and you can write a Success Manual, based on That research. The process is INVERSION – doing the opposite of normal. I mention this because it popped up during a mentoring session a couple of weeks ago: the mentee was frustrated by her progress and had begun to blame herself for the current state of things… I'm all for accountability, but not if it turns inward to self-blame and self hate. I stopped her, mis-flow. Handed her a pen and paper, put on my grown-up face and asked her to write me a failure guide for her business. “a what?” she asked “A Failure Guide” I said. “Write down everything you are currently doing in life and business that is guaranteeing that you can't get what you want. You have ten minutes – GO!” “Go!” I repeated… Her head went down and the pen started skipping across the page. Five minutes, and the pen was still dancing. Ten minutes, and the page was full, along with half of a second page… I let the clock run… When her head came up, she was smiling. “That's really clever” she said… “all I have to do now is stop doing everything on this list, right?” “Yep. Start with just one thing that you can eliminate, today, and stop doing it. You can start with a small thing, to get used to the idea, or head straight for one of the bigger ones. The important thing is that you get comfortable not doing it, then move on to the next thing on the list.” Whenever I've done this with students or mentees, they all knew what they were doing that was holding them back, and the results have been very positive. Somehow, writing it all down really held up their nonsense for scrutiny. They got honest witht ehmselves and made changes. How cool is that? If you're stuck, frustrated, blocked, thwarted and/or frustrated, take a little time to draw up your own failure manual… When you do this, you only have to do the opposite of what's on the list to experience radically different outcomes. Nice… Let me know when you've had a bash at this and how you got on – I'd love to hear from you. This one came straight out of the DMs. Aaron gets messages from people who are interested in coaching and they usually lay out everything they have been doing and everything they have tried. The same handful of problems keep showing up over and over again, so instead of answering them one at a time, this episode is the full breakdown. The whole thing is built around three buckets. Poor metrics, where the plateau only exists in perception because there was never a baseline, a rate of loss target, or any real objectivity built into the approach in the first place. False plateaus, where the deficit is actually intact but something is muddying the water and making it look like nothing is happening. And true plateaus, where the deficit on paper simply does not match the deficit in reality. If you are coaching yourself through a fat loss phase, this is the episode to have open when the scale stops moving and you are trying to figure out whether to change something or hold the line. Bryan spent a good portion of this one saying he had nothing to add, which is probably the best endorsement it could get. Before that, Bryan talks about the ten day family road trip through the canyons that has him off the mic for the next couple of weeks, and Aaron recaps the boys training trip he put together in Dallas.Covered in this episodeWhy an emotional goal like fat loss needs objective metrics to save you from yourselfEstablishing an actual baseline before you start, and why "intuitive eating" is not a planThe problem with subjective labels like eating healthy or eating goodDaily weigh-ins as data points, not verdicts, and how to use weekly and seven day moving averagesWeighing under identical conditions so you stop importing noise into your own metricsWhy the mirror is a terrible short term progress toolSetting a target rate of loss, 0.5% to 1% of body mass per week, and reverse engineering the timeline from thereWhy the first week whoosh on low carb is gut contents, glycogen, and water, not fatWater retention and inflammation from hard training, travel, poor sleep, sickness, and menstrual cyclesFat loss is not linear, and what a huge week usually means for the week after itThe gut check question: have my actions actually changed, or am I still running it by the book?Getting leaner makes you more sensitive to stress, sleep, and digestionRecomping as an explanation, and why you probably should not hold your breath on itToo much flexibility and macro Tetris, and why more opportunities equal more errorsWhen to suspect user error versus when to actually go get labsOverconfidence from early success and why the corners you cut early stop working laterInversion of control, or too many meals sourced by hands that are not your ownUntracked sauces, oils, bites, tastes, the mom tax, and the zero calorie spray technicalityAlcohol as its own macronutrient and the weekend pattern robbing weekday progressNEAT quietly dropping the longer you diet, with an important caveat on improving healthMetabolic adaptation, why it is real but often overblown, and Pontzer's constrained energy modelBody temperature after meals as a real time readout of energy availabilitySleep as the unsung hero of fat loss and the one natural cheat code that actually existsBuilding in non-progress weeks proactively because life is going to happenAccepting that rigidity has to increase as your ambition increasesTimestamps00:00:00 - Intro: Is Your Fat Loss Stalled? What happens when Orthodox Christians stop simply criticizing culture and start creating it? In this episode, Buck chats with his good friend Mano Elia—host of the Study of Stuff Podcast, founder of Spoon Records, and one of the driving forces behind the Bored No More movement—to discuss what it means to reclaim culture by creating art, music, film, and authentic community centered on Christ and His Church. Mano shares the vision behind Bored No More, a growing network of Orthodox Christian creators dedicated to producing meaningful media, cultivating community, and encouraging artists to create work rooted in Christ. He also discusses Bored No More's partnership with Logos Cinema, where the network's growing catalog of content will soon be available alongside a broader streaming platform devoted to faith-centered films and entertainment. Rather than merely reacting to a culture in decline, Mano challenges Orthodox Christians to what he calls "inverting the inversion"—reclaiming the very spaces that have been distorted and restoring them to the service of God. Buck and Mano also discuss the spiritual condition of Canada, the growing sense of isolation and nihilism they see throughout the country, the expansion of medically assisted suicide, and what these trends reveal about a society that has lost hope. They also explore the blessings and pitfalls of online Orthodoxy, why internet debates should never replace life in the parish, and why our hardworking priests deserve far more grace and gratitude than criticism. Topics include: * What "inverting the inversion" really means * Why Orthodox Christians should create culture instead of merely critique it * The vision behind the Bored No More movement * Bored No More's partnership with Logos Cinema * Spoon Records and cultivating meaningful music * Canada's growing spiritual crisis * Loneliness, nihilism, and medically assisted suicide * The strengths and weaknesses of online Orthodoxy * Why faithful parish life matters more than internet arguments * Showing grace and appreciation for our priests Learn more about Mano's work: Bored No More Community Support the mission Bored No More Study of Stuff Podcast (YouTube) Study of Stuff on Instagram Logos Cinema Sponsor: Donate to the show here: https://www.patreon.com/counterflow Podsworth App: https://podsworth.com Code: BUCK50 for HALF off your first order! Episode 4181 │ July 14, 2026 We handed sovereignty back to Caesar voluntarily. Nobody took it from us. We gave it away piece by piece. Kingdom first is the only way back. WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS Scott Kesterson — nine days into a 26-day fast, with the clarity that comes after the corner is turned — opens with the NDAA Section 219 and Senate Section 1217, the United States-Israel Defense Technology Corporation Initiative that would embed Israel into America's highest levels of AI, quantum, space, robotics, and intelligence development without reciprocal obligation, and names it plainly: not a treaty, not an alliance, but a corporate merger designed to circumvent the Constitution and transfer sovereignty to a foreign power with a congressional rubber stamp. The episode then moves to the deeper diagnosis — John Winthrop's 1630 sermon aboard the Arbella warning that a people who anchor their fortune to anything other than fidelity to God will become a story and a byword through the world, Matthew 6:33's operative word first, and the Declaration's liberty under God doing all the work — building the case that America was never supposed to be the object of identity but the space where a sovereign individual answerable to God could be lived out without a king's permission. The episode closes with the only rightly ordered response Scott finds: not abandoning the earthly, not retreating from the world, but returning to the dual citizenship model — kingdom first, Caesar second — as the only identity sturdy enough to hold when the team loses, the market crashes, the war ends badly, and the politician fails to deliver. KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED What is NDAA Section 219 and Senate Section 1217 — and why does the deliberate use of the word corporation in the United States-Israel Defense Technology Corporation Initiative reveal that this is not a diplomatic relationship between sovereign nations but a structural merger designed to bypass constitutional treaty requirements and transfer America's highest-level technology sovereignty to a foreign power without reciprocal obligation? What did John Winthrop warn aboard the Arbella in 1630 — and why does his description of what happens when a people's fortune gets anchored to something other than fidelity to God read as a precise diagnosis of the inversion America is living through right now, 396 years later? What does the "under" in liberty under God actually mean — and why does Scott argue that the Declaration's founding premise, that nothing earthly gets to define you because something higher than Caesar already claimed you, is the only identity stable enough to survive everything the current system is engineered to make you fear, worship, or despair over? Who really gets the good stuff? In this reflection on Psalm 113, John Ortberg explores what Dallas Willard called the Law of Inversion—one of the great themes running through the entire Bible.Again and again, God overturns the world's prestige system. The first become last. The overlooked become honored. The humble are lifted up.From Abel to Jacob, Hannah to Mary, the Beatitudes to Jesus washing His disciples' feet, Scripture tells one remarkable story: God's kingdom operates differently. This episode explores:- Psalm 113 and God's care for the overlooked- The Law of Inversion- The world's pecking order- Hannah's prayer and Mary's Magnificat- The Beatitudes- Jesus' upside-down kingdom- Why every person has access to "the good stuff"Scriptures:- Psalm 113- Genesis- Exodus 15- 1 Samuel 2- Luke 1- Matthew 5- John 13- Philippians 2#Psalm113 #JohnOrtberg #DallasWillard #KingdomOfGod #Beatitudes #Prayer #SpiritualFormation #ChristianFaith #BibleStudy #Humility

AI and distribution moats are forcing investors to separate real business transformation from crypto's unresolved value-capture problem. This week, Jason and Santi discuss what months of researching crypto adoption taught Inversion, why the firm's investment strategy is evolving, and what it reveals about where value is actually being created today. They also explore Robinhood's onchain strategy, whether AI is delivering stronger returns than crypto in traditional businesses, the debate over token versus equity value capture, and how the next generation of consumer finance is taking shape. A recent story has implied that a coffee shop in Brooklyn refused service to a Jewish man for no reason, sparking protests and claims of "that's how it began in Nazi Germany." The invocation and promotion of this caricature is proof that we are entering the final stage of a repeating cycle. The public is being force fed, for better or worse, antisemitic propaganda about Israelis and Jews while embracing true antisemitism in their demeaning of Arabs (and Islam). The flag of Islam has now been wrapped around the same people that destroyed Germany in the 1920s with drugs, porn, sexual depravity and genital mutilation. Every single thing decent Americans hate is being blamed on Muslims, from grooming children to socialism, despite these things being very "Jewish" in nature. For example, the New York City Mayor is supposed to be a radical Muslim who throws gays off of buildings and yet his team is comprised of Jews and rabbis; he further invested millions into transgender politics while hosting a pride parade. This subversion of the responsible parties can be found with the Roman Empire too, which is always blamed for the death of Jesus, attacks on Christians, and destruction of the Jewish temple. The truth is the Romans found no fault with Jesus, and allowed the Jews and Christians freedom until their violence and subversion became a threat to stability and order. https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/hrbodies/hrcouncil/sessions-regular/session62/a-hrc-62-crp-2.pdf*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. This episode is brought to you by Your Clockwise Week—a personalized weekly structure built around your actual life, not an ideal one. If your week feels full but not fitting, you can learn more at mikevardy.com/yourclockwiseweek.There is a difference between confidence and bravado, and most people have never really had to find out which one they actually carry. Confidence — real confidence — is built in the gap between the work you've done and the hard thing in front of you. Bravado is what fills that gap when the work hasn't been done. My guest in this bonus episode has spent decades inside some of the most pressure-tested environments in business, and that distinction was never abstract for him. It was survival.George Barrios is the former Co-President and Co-CEO of WWE and the author of Sometimes Wrong, Never in Doubt: How a Cuban Kid from Queens Transformed WWE. The book traces the lessons he gathered growing up in Flushing, Queens, through his rise inside corporate America, and into the center of a global media pivot that Wall Street initially ridiculed — and later celebrated as one of the most brilliant transformations in the public markets. I jumped at the chance to have this conversation. As a lifelong wrestling fan, I made that abundantly clear. This is a bonus episode, and it more than earned its runtime.Six Discussion PointsReal confidence isn't a personality trait — it's a record of preparation. The "sometimes wrong, never in doubt" mantra only holds up when it's earned through genuine craft-level work, not performance or false bravado. The Swamp of Despair is a real and necessary part of doing anything great — George and his co-CEO Michelle Wilson lived through it during WWE's transformation, and the graphic that mapped that arc became a touchstone for leading others through uncertainty without showing doubt.Your first zip code never fully leaves you — George's Queens upbringing shaped his willingness to disagree, push back intellectually, and refuse to accept "that's just how it is" as an answer. That edge has a shadow side, but directed well, it becomes a competitive advantage.Winning the battle for time, not just eyeballs — the strategic reframe that drove WWE's entire media approach was measuring time spent consuming content, not raw view counts. Attention lives inside time, and that distinction changed everything.Writing is the process by which you discover you don't know what you're talking about — George's most consistent advice to anyone starting out is to read and write relentlessly, not as discipline, but as the only real way to develop a genuine point of view.Inversion thinking as a practical tool — when George and Michelle were on the phone with lawyers trying to shut down pirated WWE content in China, flipping the assumption entirely led to one of the most counterintuitive and consequential decisions of the transformation. Assume you're wrong. Ask what you'd do then.Three Connection PointsSometimes Wrong, Never in Doubt by George BarriosReadwise — the book highlight recall tool George uses daily to surface and connect past reading:What is TimeCrafting? Mike Vardy on managing your relationship with timeThis bonus episode didn't come with a polished set of talking points — it came with the kind of directness that only develops after you've been in enough rooms where the stakes were real and hesitation wasn't an option. If there's one thing I want you to take from this conversation, it's that the confidence worth having isn't something you put on. It's something that accumulates quietly, from doing the work no one is watching. Sit with that for a while. If this episode resonated, I'm exploring ideas like these more deeply in my upcoming book, Productiveness. Every playbook, every case study, every innovation workshop is built on the same question: how do you succeed? You map the path forward. You model the upside. Nobody teaches you to ask the harder question. How would you guarantee this fails? That's inversion thinking. Charlie Munger called it one of the most useful tools he had, and he used it for sixty years. Most innovators know the quote. Almost none of them actually use it. By the end of this episode, you'll know why that gap exists, what it costs, and the exact steps to close it. If you want to try this on a real decision right away, I've built a free tool for it. Link below. I'll come back to it later in the episode. What Is Inversion Thinking? Inversion thinking is the practice of reasoning backward from failure. Instead of starting with "what does success look like and how do I get there," you start with "what would guarantee this fails" and design those conditions out of the plan. You'll also hear it called thinking backwards, and when it's aimed at a project before launch, a pre-mortem. Munger's rule was three words: invert, always invert. Or, in his blunter version, "All I want to know is where I'm going to die, so I'll never go there." People hear this and think pessimism. It isn't. A pessimist names the failure and stops there. Inversion names the failure and uses it to redirect the plan, while the fix is still cheap. HP Invented the Category. Then Gave It Away. In 2005, HP built Halo. It was the best telepresence system in the world. You walked into a Halo room and the people on the other end looked like they were sitting across the table from you. Life-sized. Perfect audio. Nobody had built anything close. The team that made it was brilliant, and they believed one thing without question: quality wins. They built rooms that cost $500,000 each. They required customers to run those rooms on HP's proprietary network at a monthly cost that would make your eyes water. Every decision traced back to the same conviction. Make the experience extraordinary, and the market will come to you. Nobody in that room asked the one question that mattered. What if quality isn't what the market is buying? Because it wasn't. The market was buying access. Cisco, and then Zoom, came at the same opportunity from the opposite end. Good-enough quality, on any device, on any network, available to everyone. They understood what the Halo team never tested. In communications, reach beats quality. Every new user makes the service more valuable to everyone already on it, so the product that spreads to the most people wins, even when it looks worse. That network effect beat Halo so completely that Zoom became a verb. HP defined the category and then gave it away. In 2011, under quarterly pressure, HP sold Halo to Polycom for $89 million. In 2022, HP bought the business back, folded into Poly, for $3.3 billion. Thirty-seven times the price, to reacquire a category it had invented. The failure was visible the entire time. It lived inside one assumption nobody questioned: that quality was what the customer cared about most. An inversion exercise would have dragged it into the open. Ask "how do we guarantee Halo fails," and one honest answer was already the plan. Bet everything on quality. Price it for the few. Lock it to our own network. Leave the rest of the market wide open for a cheaper rival. No crystal ball required. Read the plan from the other side and the failure was sitting right there in it. The Three Moves Inversion runs in three moves. The first two are mechanical. The third is where the discipline lives, and where most people quit. Move One: Invert the Question Take the goal and flip it. Write your goal as one sentence. The way you'd say it to the board. "We will win the telepresence market with the best experience available." Turn it into a failure question. Same goal, opposite direction. "How would we guarantee we lose the telepresence market?" List every path to that failure. Don't rank them. Don't defend anything. Write down every way it could happen, including the ones that feel unlikely or embarrassing to say out loud. Price. Distribution. A competitor's move. A wrong read on the customer. Sort each one: recoverable, or not. A slow first year is recoverable. Letting a competitor own the network effect while you keep only the high end is not. The ones you can't undo are what matter here. Set the rest aside. Move Two: Find the Load-Bearing Assumption Behind every failure you can't recover from sits a single assumption holding the whole plan up. Find it. Take your most serious irreversible failure mode. The one from Move One that would actually end the project. Ask what would have to be true for that failure to never happen. For Halo: "Enough customers will pay a large premium for superior quality, and they'll do it fast enough to matter." That sentence is the load-bearing assumption. Ask whether you tested that assumption or inherited it. Did you confirm it with evidence, or did it ride along with the idea because it felt obviously true? The Halo team inherited theirs. Quality felt like an objective good, so nobody checked whether the market agreed. If you can't point to the evidence, you've found your real risk. A plan resting on an untested load-bearing assumption is a bet wearing the costume of a strategy, however solid the rest of it looks. Move Three: Decide What to Do With It Once the assumption is exposed, you have three honest choices. Kill it. If the assumption is false and the failure is irreversible, stop now, while stopping is still cheap. Change the plan so the failure mode disappears. The Halo team had room to do this. A software tier on any network, at lower quality, to build the user base and the network effect, with the premium rooms kept for the customers who'd pay for them. They'd have owned both ends. The plan allowed it. The conviction didn't. Proceed, with the bet named out loud. Sometimes you take the risk on purpose, eyes open, because the upside justifies it. That's legitimate. Taking the same risk by accident, because nobody said the word "assumption" in the room, is not. The one move you cannot make is to see the failure mode and proceed as though you hadn't. That isn't confidence. It's the most expensive form of hope there is. Why You Can't Do This Alone You know the three moves now. The hard part is running them on your own work. You can't fully see your own assumptions. You built the plan. You believe in it. The assumption holding it up feels so obvious that questioning it never occurs to you. The Halo team wasn't careless. They were the best in the world at what they did, and that was the problem. The more expert you are, the more your assumptions feel like facts, and the less it occurs to you to test them. Then there's the room. Even when someone can see the failure coming, the dynamics of a team work against saying it out loud. You earn standing by backing the plan, not by listing the ways it dies. Raise the failure scenario and you look like you lack conviction, or like you're not on board. So the failure half the room quietly senses stays unspoken until it's expensive. Culture rewards the loudest voice on the upside, not the person who turns out to be right about the risk. Two walls. You can't see your own assumptions, and the people who might see them are discouraged from speaking. AI has none of those problems. No ego in the plan, no career to protect, no boss to impress, no reason to soften the bad news to keep the room comfortable. Point it at your work, tell it to find the failure, and it will, without flinching and without politics. It won't make the call for you. It surfaces the failure modes you're too close to see, and then you do the judging. That's how you practice this skill on your own. You sit down with a real decision and a partner that has no reason to spare your feelings. So I built the AI Prompts for Inversion Thinking for exactly that. One prompt makes the AI write the post-mortem of your project before you've even started. Another has it play a competitor designing your defeat. Then one walks you to the single assumption your whole plan is betting on. You bring the decision and the judgment. The prompts make sure nothing gets skipped just because it's uncomfortable to look at. Here's your work this week. Take one real decision you're sitting on, something with actual stakes, and run it through the pack. It's free at innovation.tools, or use the link in the description. The Long Game The people who use inversion well aren't more negative than their peers. They're more honest about which risks they can walk back and which ones they can't. That single distinction, made early and acted on, is the difference between a project that fails fast and cheap and one that fails slowly, expensively, in year ten. The failure that ends your project is usually the one plenty of people saw coming and nobody was willing to name. Say it now, while it still costs you nothing.
Dr. Killeen talks about the mental model of inversion and why it can be such a powerful leadership tool. Sometimes it's easier to identify what we want to avoid in our practices before we define what we actually want to build. There's also a hidden trap. If we spend too much time focusing on what we don't want, our thinking can become anchored to problems instead of possibilities. He shares why clarity comes not just from avoiding mistakes, but from intentionally defining the kind of culture, schedule, and practice we truly want to create. Great leadership is not only about staying away from the wrong path. It's about moving confidently toward the right one.
