Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!How to become a successful personal trainer vol 2 has an entire chapter on getting clients - 10 R's of getting clients. If you want to become a successful personal trainer, start by reading the book, not an 800 page textbook. You can be an amazing trainer and still struggle to get clients if your marketing is built on hope instead of systems. I'm sharing a simple referral strategy that consistently brings in high-quality leads: build real partnerships with chiropractors (and other allied pros), then make it easy and profitable for them to send people your way. It's not about begging for referrals. It's about showing up like a business professional and creating a clean, repeatable process that benefits the client, the chiropractor, and your coaching. We get tactical with what to say, how to say it, and where most trainers lose the deal. I walk through two approaches: paying for an initial chiropractic assessment to build trust fast, or starting lean with Instagram DMs and multiple follow-ups. You'll hear why directness matters, how to offer a complimentary workout without sounding passive, and how to set the precedent that your relationship is long-term and collaborative. Then we do the numbers. If you spend a few hundred dollars on an assessment and a lunch but land one 72-session package, the ROI can dwarf what you'd ever see from random ads. I also explain a smart package structure where the chiropractor keeps a premium for referring, why “go for no” follow-up wins, and how to position yourself as more than the stereotype of a trainer with selfies and weak anatomy knowledge. If you want more personal training clients, better client referrals, and a stronger network in your local fitness market, listen through and take notes. Subscribe, share this with a trainer friend who needs leads, and leave a review with the outreach step you're committing to this week.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? Football is evolving fast, and the coaches who keep pace are the ones who control what they can and win the little details. Ted Rath, Director of Sports Performance for the New Orleans Saints, reflects on over 15 years in the National Football League (NFL). He explains how training times, availability, and sheer athleticism have shifted with the game's expansion. Rath makes the case for gaining a well-rounded experience by coaching different sports, seeking knowledge, and being patient on your path. He also shares his linear progression approach to sport science that keeps new tools actionable and avoids technology overload. With players now arriving more educated and invested in their data, creating understanding and buy-in remains essential. Rath reveals that his coaching philosophy and culture starts with “leading yourself,” emphasizing ownership and helping others. Apply his perspective to protect availability, dial in the little details, and integrate sport science with purpose. We're in this together and we're competing for the same things and we're trying to help each other get better. But that also goes down to families. We work incredibly long hours, as you know, it's stressful. There are times where it's hard. It's extremely hard. You're going to face adversity. You're going to have ups, you're going to have downs, you're going to have great years. You're going to have very trying years. But all that also reflects upon your family and the people that you choose to surround yourself with.” 5:00 “I always tell the younger coaches that I'm talking to or asking me similar questions. Gain a well-rounded experience and what does that mean? Go see coaches with different philosophical approaches. Go see different sports like we talked about earlier. Go learn wherever you can go. Work with golf athletes and rotational athletes. Go. Just go seek knowledge wherever you can and try to make that as well-rounded as possible. And then don't rush it.” 9:20 “The only wrong step is not taking a step. So, I try to operate with a level of urgency. If you take the wrong step, that's okay. Just learn from it. Don't make that same mistake again.” 11:20

What does it actually take to prepare an athlete for a sport where the environment itself is part of the challenge? In this week's episode, Richard Graves sits down with Ryan Blake, Performance Coach, Consultant, and founder of Extreme Sports Performance, to explore the fascinating and often overlooked world of action sports performance. Ryan brings a unique perspective to this conversation. A former action sports athlete himself whose career was cut short by a life-threatening injury, he has since spent over 20 years working across elite sport, academy systems, private education, and national governing bodies, before circling back to the world he started in. Today, he works as a performance consultant for British Water Ski and Wakeboard, Head of Sport Science at St Paul's School in London, and Lead Tutor for the Youth Strength and Conditioning Association. This isn't a conversation about conventional periodisation or standard gym metrics. Ryan challenges the assumptions baked into most traditional performance models and makes a compelling case for why action sports, think X Games, halfpipe snowboarding, freestyle skiing, demand an entirely different approach. One built not around chasing peaks, but around building repeatable, durable performance that holds up under fatigue, variable terrain, and real-world unpredictability. He talks through his Restore, Apply, Own framework in practical terms, explains why training in a fresh state but competing in a fatigued one is one of the most underappreciated problems in sport, and shares how he uses a blend of velocity-based training, jump testing, readiness monitoring, and athlete-specific education tools to close that gap. He also weighs in on the growing use of AI in competition judging, the rapid rise of the X Games League, and why the preparation systems in action sports simply haven't caught up with where the sport is heading. Whether you're a sports scientist, strength and conditioning coach, or simply someone with an interest in how elite performance is built at the fringes of mainstream sport, this is a conversation worth your time. In This Episode You Will Learn Why traditional performance models fall short in action and adventure sports, and what needs to change The difference between performance capacity and durability — and why durability is the more important target in action sports How Ryan's Restore, Apply, Own framework structures athlete preparation from the ground up Why training athletes in a fatigued state is just as important as having them fresh — and how to do it effectively How to use a simple SWOT analysis to identify athlete needs and prioritise support when resources are limited The role of technology in action sports performance, including VBT, jump testing, readiness monitoring, and AI in competition judging Why strength training alone doesn't transfer to sport performance without progression through capacity, application, and environment How the rapid growth of the X Games League and Olympic inclusion is creating both opportunity and a preparation gap in action sports Practical first steps for coaches and athletes looking to engage with a more structured performance system in action sports About Ryan Blake Ryan Blake is a performance coach and consultant specialising in action and adventure sports. He founded Extreme Sports Performance in 2018 after a career that has taken him through elite academy systems, professional sport, private education, and national governing body consultancy. He holds accreditations from both the UKSCA and NSCA, holds an MSc in Maintenance and Enhancement of Elite Performance from the University of Portsmouth, and has worked with world champion athletes and Olympic medallists across disciplines including British Tennis, England Cricket, British Cycling, and now British Water Ski and Wakeboard. Alongside his consultancy work, Ryan serves as Head of Sport Science at St Paul's School in London and as Lead Tutor for the Youth Strength and Conditioning Association. His own background as an action sports athlete — and the life-threatening injury that ended that chapter — underpins his philosophy around risk, durability, and long-term performance. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The on-deck circle is full of traditions that feel right, but “feels faster” can be a trap. We dig into bat speed and bat velocity through a Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research study on warm-up devices, then translate it into coaching decisions you can actually use with baseball players. We talk through why hitters swing donut rings, power wraps, and other weighted warm-up bats, and what the research suggests happens next. The kinetic after-effect can make a standard bat feel lighter, but that doesn't guarantee higher bat velocity. We also get into why load placement matters, how a higher moment of inertia can slow the swing, and why some heavy, top-loaded options may change swing mechanics in ways that hurt performance. Then we switch to the real world: if a routine is part of an athlete's confidence, barging in with “science says you're wrong” is a good way to lose buy-in. I lay out a practical, low-drama way to test changes during practice, blowouts, or controlled trials so you can collect feedback without disrupting game flow. If you coach, train, or play, you'll leave with a clearer framework for evidence-based baseball training and better warm-up choices that respect both data and psychology. If you get value from this, subscribe, share the show with a trainer or coach, and leave a five-star review so we can push toward the top 10.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Personal training certifications look simple until you realize the industry is split between marketing machines, legacy nonprofits, and smaller programs that bet on real skill. We build a March Madness style bracket to compare the big names in fitness certification and then pull the curtain back on what actually drives popularity: ad spend, search results, partnerships with gyms, and how easy it is to pass the exam. If you're trying to become a personal trainer in 2026, this is the reality check that helps you stop chasing logos and start building a plan.We get blunt about NCCA accreditation and why it often signals process and paperwork more than coaching competence. Then we land on the question that matters most: where do you want to work? Your target gym can dictate your CPT choice, whether that's a big-box chain, a boutique studio, or a premium club. We also talk about the real career risks for new trainers, including why so many quit in the first year when they don't know how to assess, program, sell, and communicate with confidence. You'll leave with practical personal trainer career advice, including a simple interview move that flips skepticism into proof: offering to take a manager through a 60-minute workout and backing your skills. Expectations for strength and conditioning coaches now extend far beyond the weight room. Athletes and sport coaches demand better data, deeper insight, and stronger performance. Faith Brown, Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning at George Mason University, supports women’s basketball and volleyball while collaborating with the Patriot Performance Lab. Brown describes balancing teams, testing, and athlete monitoring as a “circus act.” At the heart of her coaching is one goal: be the coach she wishes she had as a college track athlete. She demonstrates ways strength and conditioning coaches can contribute as scientists, creating impact and value outside the weight room walls. Brown shares how GPS, heart rate monitoring, and force plates support workload monitoring. However, she believes that technology should only be used when it answers a real question. What if chronic pain isn't a tissue problem—but a brain map problem? If you've ever thought, “My pain must be structural,” today's episode flips that script. On the Crackin' Backs Podcast we dive into why pain persists, how the nervous system and brain maps shape sensation, and how skilled manual therapy can update the body's map instead of masking symptoms. We're joined by Dr. Steven Capobianco, co-founder of RockTape and one of the sharpest minds redefining pain, movement, and human performance through neuroscience-informed approaches to chronic pain and sensory-driven movement therapy. In this episode, you'll learn:• Why pain isn't always a tissue injury and what “back being out” really means• How manual therapy becomes sensory input to update the nervous system• What most people misunderstand about nervous system regulation• The difference between outer maps and inner body maps• How chronic pain makes the body feel unsafe—and what truly restores safety• Why patients shouldn't be passive on the table but active participants in their recovery• When manual therapy empowers vs when it creates dependencyThis episode is essential listening if you're struggling with lingering pain, movement limitations, or feel like you've tried everything without getting answers. By the end, you'll understand pain through a neuro-sensory lens, not just a structural one.About Dr. Steven CapobiancoDr. Steven “Capo” Capobianco, DC, MA, DACRB, CSCS, PES is a movement expert, sports chiropractor, and co-founder of RockTape—a globally recognized company blending neuroscience, movement education, and therapeutic techniques to enhance performance and reduce pain.
