Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Dr. Pat Davidson reveals a revolutionary approach to understanding human movement through an evolutionary lens on this episode of the Show Up Fitness Podcast. Rather than treating exercises as arbitrary selections, Davidson presents his comprehensive seven-pillar model that creates a systematic, logical progression for any movement pattern – from the most basic to the most advanced.Davidson begins by cutting through fitness industry nonsense, explaining that personal training success requires strength in three areas: aesthetics (how you look), personality/charisma, and technical knowledge. This refreshing honesty acknowledges what many trainers ignore – clients want to spend time with people who are both fun and represent their fitness goals. Davidson's own transformation from being called "Fat Davidson" online to becoming a competitive bodybuilder in his forties demonstrates living these principles. The heart of the episode explores Davidson's brilliant application of evolutionary biology to movement patterns. Through the concept of Jacksonian dissolution, he explains how humans under stress revert to more primitive movement strategies – essentially "swimming through space" like our evolutionary ancestors. This explains why stressed or underdeveloped movers compensate with frontal plane strategies rather than the sagittal uprighting and transverse rotation that characterizes competent human movement. For trainers working with clients who struggle with movement, Davidson's "training wheels" approach provides a clear methodology. By strategically adding "ground" – points of contact, feedback, and support – trainers can help clients understand proper positioning and movement patterns. As clients develop competence, these supports are gradually removed, creating a seamless progression from "white belt" to advanced movement capabilities. The episode offers invaluable insights for fitness professionals looking to elevate their practice Want to ask us a question? Getting Sport Coaches to Buy Into Your Strength Program | Ross Garner Interview Sport coaches hate your strength program. Most high school strength coaches struggle to get sport coaches on board with their training. Without coach buy-in, athletes don't take the weight room seriously and results suffer. Many strength coaches try impressing sport coaches with fancy data and showing up to every game. These tactics backfire because they focus on proving worth instead of building partnerships. The solution is asking each coach what they want to see in training sessions. In this episode, Ross Garner shares his exact system for getting every sport coach at his Texas high school bought into his strength program. He reveals how he manages 1,200 athletes across multiple sports and maintains strong relationships with all his coaches. Do you know your legal blind spots? Attorney and former collegiate strength coach Reed Wainwright explores how legal expertise reinforces professional standards in strength and conditioning. Wainwright has been instrumental in developing NSCA resources that help professionals mitigate the inherent risks associated with athletics. He highlights key areas — such as facility safety, equipment management, and emergency preparedness — that help coaches effectively advocate for their athletes and protect their careers. Emphasizing professionalism, Wainwright notes, "the more professional we act, the more professional we're perceived.” He underscores why enhancing public perception is crucial for improving compensation, overcoming stereotypes, and supporting long-term field growth. Wainwright also reflects on how his precise, methodical approach as a strength coach has translated seamlessly into his legal practice. Are you, as a strength and conditioning coach, involved in your institution's emergency action plan? Are you knowledgeable in that area? That's an area that could be a huge liability.” 8:27 “Maybe you do need a alternative licensure to become a teacher to get your foot in the door, but there are institutions that are hiring CSCS strength coaches to come in because they add value.” 17:20

Guest: Rocky Malloy | Host Bob Moffitt speaks with Rocky Malloy, founder of National School Chaplains Association, NSCA, about how Chaplains have proven so popular with constituents, parents, administrators and teachers. "They're less likely to have a school shooting. What parent doesn't want that?" says Malloy. "The biggest challenge is lack of information", Malloy says. "This is someone on campus who is the spiritual welfare of these students." Rocky shares not only the constitutionality of school chaplains, but also stories of how the presence of a chaplain has made a difference in results like increased graduation rates, reduced teen pregnancy, and reporting sex trafficking. Y'all, when someone tells me they can measure my body composition with just my phone camera, I'll admit I was skeptical. But after sitting down with Jason Moore (founder of Ren) and the fabulous data nerd herself, Deborah Roko, I'm convinced we're looking at the future of fitness coaching. And it's arriving faster than you think. These two are solving the biggest pain point in our industry: what happens during those 163 hours when your clients aren't in your studio. ● Camera magic: Independently validated technology that measures body fat percentage, lean mass, and muscle distribution using just your smartphone - no more $12K DEXA scans or InBody machines ● AI coaching clones: Coaches can literally train their own AI that texts with clients twice daily, providing 24/7 guidance without burning out the human coach ● HRV mastery: Real-time biofeedback through heart rate variability that predicts recovery, stress, and aerobic fitness - plus instant meditation feedback through breath control ● VO2 max breakthrough: Get accurate VO2 max readings through a week of one-minute daily finger scans on your phone camera - no more grueling treadmill testing ● Enterprise scaling: Working with big studio chains to create on-brand AI coaches that embody company values and training philosophy across all locations ● Coach empowerment: 11 years of development focused on making coaches better, not replacing them - Jason's trained 3,000+ coaches as an accredited instructor with NASM, NSCA, and ACSM ● Glucose revolution: Coming soon - blood glucose monitoring through camera technology ● Data integration: Connects with all major wearables to create holistic health pictures that actually guide meaningful action Jason's background as both a software engineer AND a coach gives him the rare ability to understand what coaches actually need versus what tech companies think they need. The result? Technology that amplifies human coaching instead of trying to replace it. This isn't about replacing the human connection - it's about giving your clients the guidance they're craving when you can't be there, while giving you back your sanity. Because being a coach means wearing every hat from therapist to cheerleader to sales rep, and burnout is inevitable without better tools. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The easy way, textbook certs: NASM/ACE/ISSA.The QUALIFIED WAY: NSCA, ACSM, SUF-CPT.Hands-on learning > specializations.Get a DPT & RD on your team.Master the fundamentals of movement, anatomy, sales, and assessments.Ever wonder why so many certified personal trainers struggle or quit within their first year? The answer lies in a startling disconnect between certification marketing and real-world preparation.Across the fitness landscape, aspiring trainers face a critical choice – pursue the "easiest" certification or invest in truly learning the craft. This episode exposes the uncomfortable truth that the most marketed certifications (NASM, ACE, ISSA) fail to prepare trainers for actual client work, while the certifications respected by physical therapists and movement experts (NSCA, ACSM) remain less popular despite better preparing professionals for success.Drawing from over 20 years of experience and thousands of trainer interactions, I unpack why memorizing textbooks and multiple-choice answers isn't the path to becoming a respected fitness professional. You'll discover why no client will ever ask you to identify an "agonist muscle" or follow NASM's formulaic approach, yet these are what commercial certifications test extensively. Instead, real success comes from mastering movement assessment, developing hands-on skills, and building relationships with other health professionals. For those serious about turning their passion into a sustainable career, this episode offers a reality check and a clear alternative path. The fitness industry doesn't need more certificate holders – it needs qualified, competent trainers who can deliver results and earn their place alongside other health professionals. Whether you're just starting out or feeling frustrated after certification, this frank discussion will help you understand what it really takes to thrive as a personal trainer.Want to ask us a question?
