Send us a textIf you are a relatively new shooter, you may recognize the names Cyrus and/or Ashleigh Alexander from Shotgun Gear Trap rentals, as they are often at large events across the country helping organize events, as well as providing equipment and setting targets. However, if you have been in sporting clays for a little while, you will recognize Ashleigh as a multi-time, Ladies World, National, and US Open champion! From a very young age, Ashleigh found great success, along with the help of coaches like Wendall Cherry, at the very top of the game! She was also inducted into the NSCA Hall of Fame in 2024. However, do not think for a second that Cyrus himself doesn't know how to shoot! Cyrus was a young shooter that competed through college and also had some success. Even still, as their business, married life, and now parents of a young child, have kept them busy, they still love competing! This was a fun episode with lots of insights from two fierce competitors, industry icons, and truly great people!DEAD PAIR / KOLAR DRAWING - https://e.givesmart.com/events/HpS/i/_All/u1g0/?search= -- Kolar Arms - https://www.kolararms.com- Fiocchi USA - https://fiocchiusa.com - Gun & Trophy Insurance - https://gunandtrophy.com/ - Atlas Traps - https://www.atlastraps.com- Rhino Chokes - https://rhinochokes.com- Ranger Shooting Eyewear - https://www.reranger.comRanger 10% Discount = DEADPAIR10- Taconic Distillery - https://www.spirits.taconicdistillery.com/ Discount -DEADPAIR10- Long Range - https://www.longrangellc.com- Score Chaser - https://scorechaser.com/- National Sporting Clays Association - https://nssa-nsca.org/- Clay Range Design Works - https://traptowers.comSupport the showThe Dead Pair Podcast - https://thedeadpair.com FACEBOOK- https://www.facebook.com/Thedeadpair. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Pass any Textbook personal training certification with the SUF study guide.SUF has helped over 5,300 personal trainers get certified Most trainers are told to read more and “trust the process,” then left to sink in a sea of acronyms and 800-page manuals. We take a sharper route: pass your NASM, ACE, ISSA, NSCA, or ACSM quickly, then turn that momentum into hands‑on skill, confident coaching, and a book of business that lasts. Our goal is simple—make the exam make sense, and make your training career real.We walk through the essentials you're most likely to see on the test—clinical red flags like hypertension and tachycardia, ACSM risk stratification, and the behavior change stages—then connect those terms to real assessments and training decisions. You'll decode planes of motion, open vs closed chain, and the roles of agonists, synergists, and stabilizers on big lifts like squats, pull-ups, presses, and rows. We map NASM's OPT phases and ACE's IFT model to actual programming: stabilization setups, strength endurance supersets, hypertrophy ranges, maximal strength rest periods, and power pairings that develop force and speed without guesswork. We also dive into performance testing and bioenergetics so your intervals match the sport—ATP‑PC efforts with long recovery, glycolytic repeats with targeted rest, and steady oxidative work when it counts. On the nutrition side, we keep you in scope and exam‑ready: macros, calories per gram, fiber targets, and practical protein ranges from sedentary to strength and mass phases. Most importantly, we show how to move from textbook answers to client outcomes: clean assessments, simple cues that fix valgus without fear, workouts that hit stated goals on day one, and a clear, confident close that turns great coaching into paid sessions. If you're done cramming and ready to perform, grab the study guide, pass in 30 days, and join us for hands‑on learning that builds real-world confidence. Building athletes who are strong, healthy, and resilient requires more than sets and reps, starting with a shift in mindset. Christi Edson, Head of Performance for the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), shares how she integrates strength and conditioning with sport science to sustain athlete health and performance. She reflects on the field’s evolution from the well-known “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” program to a training culture emphasizing resilience, active recovery, and durability. Drawing from her experience coaching high school athletes to NWSL professionals, Edson highlights the adaptability and creativity coaches need. Those qualities help her to develop athletes who can thrive through a demanding 11-month season. She details how tools like GPS, force plates, and velocity-based training sharpen communication and reshape expectations in the gym. Her story points coaches toward the future of athlete development: collaboration, precise load management, and long-term health as the foundation of strength. The Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS) credential can help you expand your qualifications, open new career paths, and strengthen cross-department collaboration.Show Notes“I think that would be a good example of how I fell into the sport science side, is I was trained up as a S&C coach and then was given technology to figure out after the fact. One of those technologies being force plates, which I have come to love. They're so diverse in what I can do with them in the gym.” 9:15 “I tell my athletes that all the time. You're not here for me. You're not here for me. You are here to play soccer. And my job is to help you stay healthy, to play soccer. We have some words up in the gym, which I finally got. It was strong, healthy, resilient. […] I want you to be healthy mentally and physically, because I don't need you to just slog through a season. I want you to feel good going into the weekend. But then resilient, you're going to take some knocks. But can we bounce back from that? And that strong foundation, I think, is a big piece of that.” 17:25 “Keep your ear to the ground for internships. […] Get those NSCA certifications in early because they are becoming more required. And the organizations that you work for have their ear to the ground. They understand what the minimum standard should be.” 24:10

You don’t have to love the weight room, but you can’t last without it. Champ Bailey, a National Football League (NFL) Hall of Famer, admits he never enjoyed lifting, but says respecting the work gave him the edge to sustain 15 seasons at the highest level. Hear how his preparation evolved from traditional lifts to readiness routines — core, mobility, warm-ups, and recovery — that kept him fresh through the NFL grind. Bailey emphasizes that strength and conditioning coaches are undervalued leaders who “see you at all levels,” guide comebacks, and build buy-in with simple numbers. He recalls how a failed conditioning test led to one of his best seasons, and how weight room leadership left no cracks to ensure buy-in from everyone. Bailey continues his impact through the Positive Athlete initiative, using sport as a platform for growth. It's how you conduct yourself in meetings. And you don't ever have to be vocal. You let your actions speak for you.” 20:10 “But Positive Athlete is a platform-- it's a recognition platform. So what we do is we recognize student athletes 9th through 12th grade for really just being positive individuals. So it could be somebody who's overcome a terrible injury, just great in the community, great student, good teammate, always on time, always showing up, accountable, all the things that sports sort of teaches us without us even thinking about it.” 26:05 “You've got to think how we value sports and the scrutiny. If every company was run the way you run a sports organization, and the detail, and the evaluation, and the team-oriented environment, and everybody knowing the mission, and staying on task, understanding your role, that's what a team looks like.” 32:30

What really makes athletes better; technology, programs, or relationships? Sean Smith shares his coaching journey and the lessons that shaped his philosophy. In this episode, we dive into:
In this episode of Strength in Knowledge, Dr. Zach Baker, DPT, sits down with Dr. Corrie Jones, DPT, to tackle one of the most common—and most misunderstood—questions in rehab and performance: What's the best exercise for your patient or client? Together, they break down the clinical decision-making process behind exercise selection, and why the answer often isn't as simple as it seems. From evaluating patient needs to applying thoughtful progressions, regressions, and lateralizations, Zach and Corrie explore how context, creativity, and clinical reasoning all shape effective programming. If you're a physical therapist, strength coach, or personal trainer looking to sharpen your practice, this episode delivers the kind of practical insight you can apply tomorrow.
How do you train hundreds of athletes across multiple sports in a single room—with limited time and equipment? Mark Hoover has the answer. As a nationally recognized high school strength and conditioning coach, Mark has built a program that runs like a machine and develops real athletes. In this episode, we dive into:
Dr. Gregory Haff is the Professor of S&C and the Director of the Strength and Power Research Group at ECU. He is the author of the ‘Scientific Foundations and Practical Applications of Periodisation' & the co-editor of the NSCA's Essentials of S&C textbooks. A central goal of his research is to bridge the gap between scientific inquiry & practical applications, with a research focus on the periodisation of training, resistance training programming strategies, and methods of testing and monitoring of the training process. His research focuses on methodologies for testing, monitoring, and programming resistance training interventions, as well as concepts related to periodization and training theory. QUOTES "So they created linear position transducers, much like a gym aware, and they used it with weightlifters in particular, because obviously weightlifting, it has a speed component to it e.g., you've got to be able to move the barbell quickly and you've got to be able to move heavy loads very quickly." "If we guided training solely by velocity, we couldn't get high end strength development. Could we improve power? Yes. Could we improve the speed of movement? Yes. Could we regulate training load? Yes. But we often missed that stimulus to actually increase maximal strength." "So when we looked at our data, what we found is the slope of the load velocity profile changes from day to day with fatigue more dramatically than maximal strength capacity. So this is where it gets a little interesting. If I'm programming off the load velocity profile, am I actually programming off the maximal capacity or am I being hyper reactive to fatigue?" "Velocity based training is no better than the percentage based. There's no more variability or less variability. They're about the same. So is it really adding to my training other than more expense because I've got to buy them, more technology because I need it, and more training for my staff? Potentially not." "You might want to occasionally use a load-velocity profile to look at where the athlete's weaknesses are. It might inform you, but then you've got to contextualize it. Where am I in my training program? And what is my goal right now? So if I'm in a strength power phase and the velocity end is low, then I have got a problem. But if I'm in a hypertrophy phase and it's low… you know, I don't really care right now." "I wouldn't use it with weightlifting exercises, especially when what I've what I found with people that use it with weightlifting exercises, they change their technique to chase speed. And what happens is they create an inefficient movement pattern." SHOWNOTES 1) Greg's story, from growing up in the US as a son of a Marine to becoming a leading researcher in strength science 2) The history of velocity-based training and its German / Russian origins 3) Why we might have to be careful using VBT to estimate maximal strength considering the stability of maximal strength 4) Greg's suggested strategies around using VBT to autoregulate load plus his preference for linear position transducers over accelerometers 5) Strength stability across different exercises and the stages of over-reaching/over-training 6) How and when to apply VBT during strength training periodization and using load-velocity profiles / critical minimum velocity thresholds across different exercises 7) The cognitive load of always using VBT and its effect on motivation as well as the effect of different athlete phenotypes on VBT 8) Which exercises to use VBT with and potential applications for other populations besides athletes 9) Using VBT to monitor readiness with a set load 10) The biggest thing Greg has changed his mind on in recent times and the importance of mobility PEOPLE MENTIONED Mike Stone Boyd Epley Andrew Fry William Kraemer Carl Miller Stuart Guppy Dietmar Schmidbleiter Nick Poulos Dan Baker Jonathon Weakley Bryan Mann Duncan French

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Dr. Pat Davidson reveals a revolutionary approach to understanding human movement through an evolutionary lens on this episode of the Show Up Fitness Podcast. Rather than treating exercises as arbitrary selections, Davidson presents his comprehensive seven-pillar model that creates a systematic, logical progression for any movement pattern – from the most basic to the most advanced.Davidson begins by cutting through fitness industry nonsense, explaining that personal training success requires strength in three areas: aesthetics (how you look), personality/charisma, and technical knowledge. This refreshing honesty acknowledges what many trainers ignore – clients want to spend time with people who are both fun and represent their fitness goals. Davidson's own transformation from being called "Fat Davidson" online to becoming a competitive bodybuilder in his forties demonstrates living these principles. The heart of the episode explores Davidson's brilliant application of evolutionary biology to movement patterns. Through the concept of Jacksonian dissolution, he explains how humans under stress revert to more primitive movement strategies – essentially "swimming through space" like our evolutionary ancestors. This explains why stressed or underdeveloped movers compensate with frontal plane strategies rather than the sagittal uprighting and transverse rotation that characterizes competent human movement. For trainers working with clients who struggle with movement, Davidson's "training wheels" approach provides a clear methodology. By strategically adding "ground" – points of contact, feedback, and support – trainers can help clients understand proper positioning and movement patterns. As clients develop competence, these supports are gradually removed, creating a seamless progression from "white belt" to advanced movement capabilities. The episode offers invaluable insights for fitness professionals looking to elevate their practice Want to ask us a question? Getting Sport Coaches to Buy Into Your Strength Program | Ross Garner Interview Sport coaches hate your strength program. Most high school strength coaches struggle to get sport coaches on board with their training. Without coach buy-in, athletes don't take the weight room seriously and results suffer. Many strength coaches try impressing sport coaches with fancy data and showing up to every game. These tactics backfire because they focus on proving worth instead of building partnerships. The solution is asking each coach what they want to see in training sessions. In this episode, Ross Garner shares his exact system for getting every sport coach at his Texas high school bought into his strength program. He reveals how he manages 1,200 athletes across multiple sports and maintains strong relationships with all his coaches.
