Former collegiate hockey athlete Cole Hergott thrived in the offseason, but it took a setback to accelerate his path in strength and conditioning. After losing his spot on the team, he channeled his work ethic into interning with Trinity Western University. Years later, he returned to his alma mater as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Only 25 at the time, Hergott recounts the unique challenge of coaching athletes who were older or previous classmates. Leading over 300 athletes as the sole full-time strength and conditioning coach, he quickly learned to “write all your plans in pencil,” while building trust, optimizing logistics, and adapting through COVID-19 disruptions. Hergott emphasizes mentorship and encourages coaches to lean on those who navigated similar challenges. As part of the NSCA British Columbia Advisory Board, he encourages listeners to share their practical insights at local events. Call people, text people, send emails, ask questions. We talked about mentors. Lean on your mentors because they've been there. They've made the mistakes. I've made the mistakes and I continue to make mistakes every day, but I think that's how you learn and grow.” 11:05 “Strength and conditioning is not something that we're just going to figure out and somebody's going to have all the answers. As I talked about before, there's more than one way to skin a cat. And so it's important to learn from a bunch of people who maybe think differently than you so that you can continue to get good results.” 11:30 “I'd say if you're somebody who's looking to speak, find something that you're good at, something that you are passionate about, that you like to speak about, that you're good at. And then don't be afraid to reach out to your advisory board…” 16:15

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The easy way, textbook certs: NASM/ACE/ISSA.The QUALIFIED WAY: NSCA, ACSM, SUF-CPT.Hands-on learning > specializations.Get a DPT & RD on your team.Master the fundamentals of movement, anatomy, sales, and assessments.Ever wonder why so many certified personal trainers struggle or quit within their first year? The answer lies in a startling disconnect between certification marketing and real-world preparation.Across the fitness landscape, aspiring trainers face a critical choice – pursue the "easiest" certification or invest in truly learning the craft. This episode exposes the uncomfortable truth that the most marketed certifications (NASM, ACE, ISSA) fail to prepare trainers for actual client work, while the certifications respected by physical therapists and movement experts (NSCA, ACSM) remain less popular despite better preparing professionals for success.Drawing from over 20 years of experience and thousands of trainer interactions, I unpack why memorizing textbooks and multiple-choice answers isn't the path to becoming a respected fitness professional. You'll discover why no client will ever ask you to identify an "agonist muscle" or follow NASM's formulaic approach, yet these are what commercial certifications test extensively. Instead, real success comes from mastering movement assessment, developing hands-on skills, and building relationships with other health professionals. For those serious about turning their passion into a sustainable career, this episode offers a reality check and a clear alternative path. The fitness industry doesn't need more certificate holders – it needs qualified, competent trainers who can deliver results and earn their place alongside other health professionals. Whether you're just starting out or feeling frustrated after certification, this frank discussion will help you understand what it really takes to thrive as a personal trainer.Want to ask us a question? Squash demands speed, strength, and control at the edge of human range — but still suffers from a massive stigma around heavy lifting and underuse of strength and conditioning. Brigita Roemer is leading the shift as Director of Strength and Conditioning for U.S. Squash, where she oversees all off-court physical development. After suffering a devastating injury as a track and field athlete, she discovered strength and conditioning when a biomechanics team “put [her] back together,” setting her on a linear path in the profession. Assigned to a sport she had never heard of before, Roemer began by emphasizing injury risk reduction, full range of motion, and “strength at length” to meet squash’s extreme movement and deceleration demands. With frequent connective tissue injuries like sprains and strains, athlete availability remains a top concern. By prioritizing continuing education and building relationships, Roemer has helped U.S. Squash make history — on the path to LA 2028. Historically, not many players lifted heavy. There's still like a massive stigma around heavy lifting and squash with making players bulky and slow and all the things that we're a little bit more current on in the field.” 11:00 “Because, physically, it's a brutal sport, man. There aren't a lot, but there's some, and they spend something like, 81 to 95% of the time on court in zone 5. There's six to eight times their body weight going through the kinetic chain when you do a hard lunge to the front. Just the percentage of connective tissue injuries in the sport are wild. I mean, the season is basically all year long, with the exception of June to August.” 12:07 “I always start with injury reduction first. They can't get better at the sport if they can't be on court. So the best ability is availability, as they say. I make sure that whatever programming I do really hones in on a lot of that and the connective tissue stuff.” 17:25

That led to a closer look, and sure enough, the issue was a symptomatic patella tendon that hadn't been fully rehabbed.___Save on your re-certification to the NSCA and CSCCa with best price CEUs

Laurel and Sarah explain how power tends to decline faster than strength as we get older—and why that matters—along with how the right kind of training can help you maintain and even improve it.They share real-world examples of power in action, clear up common misconceptions, and highlight the key principles that make power training both safe and effective. I am not endorsing GOATA. I say this at the beginning of this episode and want to say it again, I know Rick Stanzi from our Iowa Football connection. He works for GOATA. I had a convo with him and Gary about what they think and believe. I do not agree with most of what they say/said. You will hear me disagree with and question them multiple times in this conversation. What you wont hear is me, Rick, or Gary be rude to one another when we talk and disagree with one another. People can disagree on a topic and still be kind to one another. I will say it again, I do not think GOATA "laws" are correct. Yes training the foot is important. Yes the head is important, so are the eyes as they drive sensory input. But the notion of columns, spirals, reverse locomotion, etc... I do not agree with, nor do I think they make sense. Tried and true S&C that has been applied with: Speed/agility work on the field/courtWeight room lifting with: proper periodization for athletes based on training age, movement ability, prior injury, sport, position on sport Conditioning work on and off feet (again depending on time of year). To cherry pick and say GOATA and what they teach violates the principles of S&C that are how athletes train, get stronger, faster, more powerful, better shape and stay healthy for decades. At the heart of it all is buy-in, trust, and accountability. Eichenberger shares the importance of leveraging psychology, getting top players to set the tone for the team, and balancing consistency with creativity. How you maintain strength is by lifting weights. So, we have to play with the volume and things like that, but you have to lift weights often.” 11:40 “You can only work with players if they buy into your program. If they don't, they can go somewhere else. Like they have enough money to hire somebody else. They have enough money to do those things in the NBA. But why does a player want to work out with you? What kind of buy-in are you creating with that player? It could be different things. Accountability, if you say you're going to do something, do something. Be there before the player. Like show the player that you want to work with that player, right?” 18:00 “You have to focus on the whole team. That's what strength and conditioning is. So, my belief is that you're going to train the player that doesn't touch the court, and then you're going to play the player the most minutes very similar. So, like you got to give a chance to the guy that's like, in our case, our 17th guy trains the same as the first guy that we have.” 26:30

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!How to Become A Successful Personal Trainer Vol. 2. NEW RELEASELearn how to make serious money as a personal trainer. It doesn't require working yourself to death. I'm sharing exactly how I make $500 in just two hours and how you can build multiple revenue streams to reach a six-figure income while maintaining work-life balance. Most trainers struggle because they're caught in a devastating mathematical trap: charging $50/session means you'd need 200 sessions monthly to earn $120,000 annually—physically impossible without burnout. After 20 years in the industry, I've learned that sustainability comes from premium pricing. By commanding $200-350 per session (which took time and strategic career development), I can generate $10,000 monthly from just two daily sessions with high-end clients who come through my carefully cultivated network of medical professionals. The secret isn't just charging more—it's creating multiple income streams. Separate your nutrition coaching from training packages ($250/month per client adds up fast). Develop referral partnerships with physical therapists and doctors. Create certification programs, write books, speak at events, and mentor other trainers. Each stream compounds your income while reducing physical training hours. Success requires mastering technical skills (anatomy, programming), people skills (communication, motivation), and business skills (sales, marketing)—all areas where textbook certifications fall drastically short.Ready to transform your training business? Get my book "How to Become a Successful Personal Trainer" to learn what took me decades to figure out. Stop limiting yourself with self-defeating thoughts about what you're worth, and start building the confidence to charge what creates a sustainable, rewarding career. The fitness industry needs qualified professionals who can thrive long-term—will you be one of them?Want to ask us a question?
