Marsha Music  recites her poem Just Say Hi and has plenty to share about her words ... it was the first time I had met Marsha. I attended my first Detroit Urban Consulate Parlor Talk in June 2016 to hear Marsha Music. I was going to be giving a Parlor Talk the following week and felt this would be an opportunity for me to meet Marsha Music as  I have enjoyed seeing and hearing her virtually . I also wanted to get a feel for the setting at the Urban Consulate in preparing for my own Parlor Talk the next week.I was overcome with a sense of joy, melancholy, gratitude, optimism, reality, and so many emotions all wrapped up in my response to what Marsha shared ... perhaps most of all the unexpected warm and heartfelt welcome she gave me when she saw I was  there to hear her speak. I did not know Marsha personally and had no idea she knew me.  I knew that night when Marsha spoke to me from her heart I was home. I was at the right place at the right time with the right person coming into my life.  Marsha's words when talking story, her message in her poems she read, her personality, her brutal yet graceful honesty about so many issues that do linger in my subconscious, her warmth for all that were in attendance, her generosity in acknowledging others made it a very special evening. I did not record all of the talk but here is some of what I got and I hope you find listening as worthwhile as I did and do each time I listen when sharing it with others. I have since read so much more of Marsha 's work. I've had a long conversation by phone the day after her talk that I treasure as she has so much wisdom to share. I was so pleased Marsha attended my parlor talk and shared her heart and so grateful to know Marsha.  I was certain Marsha should be reciting her poem at Detroit Homecoming and told her I was going to make that a goal of mine. It was a blessing that when I was able to introduce Colleen Robar, who produces Detroit Homecoming at an event I created at Detroit Foundation Hotel an instant friendship and mutual respect  between the two evolved and Marsha did in fact present her poem at the closing of Detroit Homecoming in 2017 and so many meaninfgful friendships have evolved from bringing us all together. We have spent a lot of time together in person and on the phone and in spirit.  I have loved how we have weaved our support for one another and others too into some wonderful thoughtful friendships with new friends and people from our past.  Can't begin to express how much I have learned about the Detroit I thought I knew from what Marsha shares.

The more I get to know Chris I see he is a get it done advocate.

Professional golfer Sean Maekawa, who grew up in Paauilo, Big Island of Hawaii started to play golf in 1999 at the 9 hole Honokaa Golf Course where he received some encouragement from Alan Texeira. Alan, RIP  who lived in Honokaa and was a PGA Professional with Waikoloa Beach Golf  and that lead Sean to join the Waikoloa Junior Golf Program. He shares how being involved with the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and Waikoloa Junior Golf where he met PGA Professional Ross Birch. Ross continued to coach Sean  helped him win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Individual golf titles from 2004-2007 while playing for the Honokaa High School team and the Hawaii High School State Championship in his senior year.. I met Sean through Ross  when they were guests on my Emily T Gail Talks Golf Show on espnhawaii.com. It was Sean's first time on the radio. I have enjoyed remaining friends with Sean and his parents and being a long time supporter in spirit of his golf journey. With such stellar high school golf play in Hawaii, Sean earned a golf scholarship to the University of Oregon and played for the Division I Oregon Ducks under PGA Professional Casey Martin. He was a member of the Oregon Ducks Men's Golf Team in the Annual Amer-Ari Division I Invitational Tournaments at Waikoloa Beach Resort that has a reputation as one of the best Division I tournaments in the country for the quality of players and the hospitality shared by Coach Earl and his coaches and the Vulcan golf booster club and Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Oregon Ducks team  had some very strong finishes including winning the NCAA in Sean's  junior year.  After college Sean turned professional and played on the Gateway Tour and other mini tours. He wanted to explore coaching which led to an opportunity to be a volunteer coach with his former college coach Casey Martin for the Oregon Ducks. Sean says he “discovered he enjoyed coaching at college level having been a college player. He wanted to share with others what he has learned being on both sides of the ball”. That led him back to the Big Island where he could be Asst. Professional at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf under PGA Professional Kevin Ginoza. Kevin had played for the Division II Pac West University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Golf team and has been an Assistant Coach with his former coach Earl Tamiya  along with Troy Tamiya and Sean joined them as well as Assistant Coach. He is grateful to be back home with the opportunity to be a Asst. Golf Coach while raising a family with his wife Ashley. They have two young children Kamden and Aliah. Sean credits the encouragement he has received from mentors, his parents Schoen and Monica and his sister Elisye as he pursued golf as what kept him motivated to follow his dream of a golf career.   Waikoloa Beach Resort recently were hosts for their Annual Division II Dennis Rose Invitational Tournament with top NCAA Division II men's and women's golf teams.   Dennis Rose, also a mentor for Sean was long time Director  of Golf at Waikoloa and president at Waikoloa who passed away at the age of 59 in 2007 after a two year battle with cancer. The men played at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf and the women played at Hapuna Golf Course. at Mauna Kea Resort. Sean talks about the Dennis Rose Invitational and Vulcan team experiences this year who are ranked in the top 50 Division II teams in the country. That is their best ranking ever and they will be the only Division II team in the The Amer-Ari coming up in February  Past winners and participants of the Amer-Ari have included Tiger Woods, Notah Begay, Matt Kucher, Jordan Spieth, Matthew Wolf and many others who have gone on to careers on the PGA TOUR. The Division II Vulcan's Men's team and Coach Earl and Asst Coaches Kevin, Troy and Sean and the team are focused on holding their own.  Scott Head, VP Operations Waikoloa Beach Resort is sure they will also be great hosts and add to their reputation as one of the most prestigious and fun Division I Invitational Tournaments in the country. Mahalo for listening. Welcome to Emily T Gail Talk Story ...August 2022. Sharing some thought about my enthusiasm for the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit at Detroit Golf Club last week with one of my favoirtie players Tony Finau winning. Tony used to be at Turtle Bay here in Hawaii.  In this first show that I have recorded in a while I share some of my own stories.  Correction due regarding my Sam Saunders story. Sam is Arnold Palmer's grandson. I said son. One of the stories I told was about seeing Sam when he played in the Rocket Mortgage Classic year one (2019). I first met Sam when he was about 6 years old and Arnold used to fly his own Cesna Citation if I remember correctly  here for the Mauna Lani Senior Skins on ABC that ran before the Super Bowl. Used to meet Arnold and his guests and family when they would arrive at the airport.- Arnold in the pilots seat. Arnold's son in law Roy would caddy for Arnold. Sam is son of Roy and Arnold's daughter Amy. . About the time I met Arnold I met Mark Rolfing, who at the time was with ABC. Now with NBC/Golf Channel. That was well over 25 years ago and Mark and his wife Debi have been friends ever since and over the years been very good to me. Mark always has time to talk story with me.  Mark was at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with Golf Channel last two years and has been great about letting me lead some of my fellow Detroit media friends to him. We both enjoy weaving Detroit love and Hawaii aloha.  At the end of this show is a talk story Mark and I did in January at the Senior PGA TOUR Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai here on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Mark and I talk about his long time efforts to grow junior golf here in Hawaii with the recent merging of the First Tee Hawaii and HSJGA.  I was a junior golfer in the 1960's and that is why I have been able to shape a way to stay around the game in my own way. I love how Mark acknowledges my doing it my way. I learned it from him. He has been a pioneer in many ways. Thanks for listening. Aloha.

It is his favorite tournament to cover and he has some interesting takes on this years event.   Mark  has seen a lot, has accomplished a lot outside of his broadcasting life which began as a result of playing in a professional golf tournament he had created at Kapalua on Maui. After Don Ohlmeyer who was producer with ABC/ESPN saw him in the interview booth encouraged him to get into the business and offered him a job.   That tournament site at Kapalua where he had created the professional tournament has evolved. We now know it as Tournament of Champions played on the renowned Plantation Course that Mark was involved developing. As we were talking I decided to turn on my recorder and I am glad I did. As always I record and no editing. It is what it is and I feel this was one very worthwhile conversation with Vance. I appreciate he took the time to educate me. They get up to 5,000-6,000 people over the weekend who come enjoy the free admission and easy to walk through Belle Isle Aquarium. It was a steady stream of all ages coming through as we walked around. Some history of the Belle Isle public aquarium located in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. Designed by noted architects George D. Mason and Albert Kahn,[5] it opened on August 18, 1904, and was the oldest continually operating public aquarium in North America when it closed on April 3, 2005.[2] The aquarium reopened to the public on August 18, 2012, and is now run entirely by volunteers.[6] The 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) historic building features a single large gallery with an arched ceiling covered in green glass tile to evoke an underwater feeling.[1][7] The aquarium was operated by the Detroit Zoological Society prior to the 2005 closure. It is currently operated by the Belle Isle Conservancy. August 3, 2005, Detroit citizens voted to reopen the aquarium by an overwhelming margin (88% in favor, 12% opposed).[11] However, the vote was non-binding and the aquarium remained closed. In 2010, supporters of the aquarium were still trying to find donors to help defray the building's operating costs.[11] Although the building was closed between 2005 and 2012, goldfish and koi from an outside pond were housed in the aquarium during the winter.[11] Each year in February, the aquarium opened for a day for the annual "Shiver on the River,"[11] a fund raising event to promote public support of Belle Isle non-profit groups including the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium.[2] On 14 August 2012, The Belle Isle Conservancy, a non-profit volunteer group established in 2011 from the merger of the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium and other Belle Isle non-profit groups, announced the re-opening of the aquarium on a limited basis. The aquarium was reopened on 18 August 2012, the 108th anniversary of its opening.[citation needed] The aquarium is normally open Friday-Sunday However hours due to covid check their site. https://www.belleisleconservancy.org/belle-isle-aquarium

Michael and I actually met here in Hawaii in the 1990's as he is a wonderful ambassador for Hawaii and has written extensively and broadcast from Hawaii. I mention that because I have been weaving my Detroit community and Hawaii community for years with a lot of friends and ohana. There are a lot of threads that weaved nicely over last couple years as Bob Lambert, GM Detroit Foundation Hotel had been so open to sharing ideas and ways to showcase the community space and spirit I had learned to appreciate at Detroit Foundation Hotel. So Michael and Bob and his team at DFH and a whole bunch of us I like to call Ohana shared a wonderful morning last June 21. Michael let me line up all the guests that included who we had partnered with at DFH like Empty Bowls Detroit, Rainbow Connection and the Detroit Historical Society. We also showcased the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the monies being raised for the Detroit community as Michael talked with Steve Wilke (RIP) Hour Magazine and GAM and RJ King dBusiness who had just released his new book, Detroit: Engine of America. Larry Alexander ...DMCVB aka VisitDetroit was a guest and talked about all the efforts in Detroit. Tony Michaels, Parade Company joined us and talked about the Ford Fireworks that were coming up the following week. . Watching many of the summer events being cancelled and the Detroit Foundation Hotel being temporarily closed is difficult .... however the good efforts of so many of our ohana going on in many places in the community and hopefully DFH will be open again soon. I loved listening to this broadcast the other day. I heard Michael Patrick say the crowd and energy and spirit of the day reminded him of JP McCarthy's Focus Radio Show parties. What a compliment. While it was a year ago I remember so well how happy we all were about the day and how much gratitude I had for all that helped make it such a memorable day. Bob Lambert and Jennifer Lee and the DFH team at the time, Darraugh Collins, Michael Patrick and like always Colleen Robar helping us out in so many ways. So that is why I am replaying our Broadcast.

Jack Berry has covered many milestone sports experiences including 40 Masters ... he is in Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. I talked to him at conclusion of round 3 of the 2019 Masters and asked him what he was feeling as he was watching the days events unfold ... and his thoughts before the final round Sunday. I've known and admired Jack Berry for 50+ years. I was a junior golfer aspiring to play on the LPGA. Never was good enough however did play in LPGA events in the 1960's as amateur as you could in those days with a 5 handicap or less. Jack wrote about my amateur golf in the 60's. He was a mentor to me in ways he never knew as I got into writing about golf and having radio shows like my Emily T Gail Talks Golf & Other Sports on esphawaii.com for long time. I started calling Jack for interviews and having him share his stories and knowledge of the game. I've learned so much for Jack. He still covers golf with GLSP published by my long time friend Art McCafferty. Art also publishes Michigan Runner who I credit for the popularity of our Emily Detroit Runs in the 1970'-80's. Jack used to run in the Emily Detroit Runs. We talk about the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic coming to Detroit end of June. Will be held at Detroit Golf Club, the only private club in the Detroit City limits. Lots of golf history there. Personal history for me as I played Junior and Women's Amateur events at Detroit golf in the 1960'-70's. Horton Smith, who was one of the first to win the Masters was the pro at Detroit Golf at the time. The photo of Jack and I was when he was visiting Hawaii ... in between his hikes and active visit we met up on the seawall on the ocean in Kailua Village across the street from Kona Plaza where I lived.

Who is Jack Berry? He's a long time dear friend of mine. He was a Sports Writer with the Detroit New for many years. He was awarded the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. He watched me grow up as a pretty good Junior Golfer in Michigan in the 60'-70's. Wrot some nice things about me and I love that he ran in our Emily Detroit Run's in the 70'-80'. I took this story about Jack off the Golf Wire from 2007. What a career he has had and he is still very active with his writing and video story telling in many ways including with my good friend Art McCafferty's GLSP Michigan Golfer. Jack Berry, the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, was the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award. The award honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf.In 1945, the year the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs in the World Series Jack Berry's father was the Detroit Tigers Traveling Secretary. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Jack Berry, of W. Bloomfield, Mich., whose five decades of reporting featured more than 70 of golf’s major Championships, as well as the promotion of the PGA Professional, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. Berry is the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award. Berry, 75, will be honored April 4, 2007, at the 35th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga. "It is with a great deal of pride that The PGA of America presents this award to Jack Berry, a professional who has enlightened us all by both his attention to detail and wit, and has captured the best in the game of golf in his work," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Mr. Berry has spent his journalistic career covering the landmark events, but he also has been a tireless servant of the game by promoting local golf and elevating the PGA Professional’s vocation to the general public." Born in Detroit, Berry began a lifelong love affair with sports as a baseball fan, following his father, Clair, who was the traveling secretary for the Detroit Tigers. Jack Berry picked up a golf club, his father’s wooden-shaft driver, for the first time in high school. He learned the game through the late PGA Professional Chet Jawor, who was PGA head professional for Detroit’s six municipal golf courses. "I soon became a big fan of the PGA Professional," said Berry. "I always liked what they did for the game and all were good guys and completely different than the Tour professional. I was fortunate that the two newspapers where I worked (Detroit Free Press and Detroit News) had a good tradition of local golf coverage. I enjoyed the opportunity to work with people in the community in covering golf. I am very honored to receive this Award, considering those who have preceded me." Berry attended Marquette University from 1949-1951, and also served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. Upon his discharge, he finished his college education and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956. His journalism career began as a correspondent for United Press (1956-59), where he distinguished himself through his versatility, covering professional and local sports as the wire service’s sports editor for the state of Michigan. Berry joined the Detroit Free Press in 1959, and spent the next 12 years on the sports staff. He marked his first Tour event when he covered the 1958 Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. His professional sports "beat" featured the Detroit Red Wings of the then-six-team National Hockey League; and he marked his first major Championship in 1961, at the U.S. Open at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich. Berry joined the Detroit News in 1971, and remained its premier golf writer through 1993, during which time he developed a relationship with Michigan PGA Professionals and the Free Press Junior Golf Program, which collaborated with the Detroit Recreation Department. It is a program "that was a forerunner to today’s First Tee in providing opportunities for young people to join the game," said Berry. In 1984, Berry was named the 27th president of the Golf Writers Association of America, making him the second journalist from the Detroit News (preceded by John Walter in 1958-59) to hold that position. Berry also served as GWAA secretary-treasurer from 1990-98. Following his Detroit News’ career, Berry became one of the most prolific golf freelance writers, with columns and features appearing in PGA Magazine, Chicagoland Golf and the Michigan Golfer. He is the recipient of the 1997 Golf Association of Michigan Distinguished Service Award. In 2003, he became the second journalist inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, joining the late Walter. Among the members of the Michigan Hall of Fame are legendary five-time PGA Champion and founding PGA member Walter Hagen, and 1953 PGA Champion Walter Burkemo. Berry marked the 1986 Masters, when Jack Nicklaus conquered Augusta National Golf Club at age 46, as not only his most memorable golf event as a reporter, but also a defining moment in his life. Berry nearly died following the Masters. He was stricken with acute viral myocarditis two weeks earlier at the Players Championship. After enduring great pain and energy loss during the Masters, he arrived home to enter the emergency room of the local hospital. "I arrived with heart, liver and kidney failure, and in shock," said Berry. "I almost made the final six-footer." Some two years later, Berry’s recovery was complete, as he competed in the New York City Marathon. His reporting has also ventured into horse racing, where he chronicled Secretariat’s path to the 1973 Triple Crown; to Super Bowl VII, where the Miami Dolphins became the NFL’s first and only unbeaten championship team at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1973; and to Lake Placid, N.Y., where the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team upset the squad from the former Soviet Union in the famous "Miracle on Ice." The PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, first presented in 1989, honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf. Past Award winners include: Dick Taylor, Herbert Warren Wind, Jim Murray, Frank Chirkinian, Bob Green, Dan Jenkins, Furman Bisher, Jack Whitaker, Dave Anderson, Ken Venturi, Jim McKay, Kaye Kessler, Nick Seitz, Renton Laidlaw, Bob Verdi, Al Barkow and Ron Green Sr. The Award selection committee is composed of representatives from The PGA of America, PGA Tour, USGA, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, Golf Superintendents Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, American Society of Golf Course Architects, National Golf Foundation and past recipients.

John and Judy Co-founders of the Ironman back in 1978 were in Kona with and their daughter Kirsten and son Michael for the 40th Anniversary of the Ironman. Michael was not with us for the show as he was getting ready to participate in the Ironman. We thought it would be a good time for John and Judy to get on record how the Ironman started and dispel the myth that it all started in a bar, as a challenge among a bunch of navy seals. Thanks for watching.

Colleen and I were having a catch up conversation in her office at Robar PR on Burns and Jefferson ... More of my reaching out to her about some of my visions for how to keep weaving and being a part of the Detroit community ... Detroit Homecoming has been the last few years a wonderful support system for what I am doing in and for Detroit and for myself as I'm one of the small entrepreneurs/artists waking up every day working at figuring out how to be an expat who continues to contribute while creating some income for what I do in Detroit. So I thought I would have Colleen share a few words about the 2018 Detroit Homecoming and spur of the moment turned on my voice memo to record. While it was educational, informative which I love because I learn from the speakers and panel discussions things about Detroit I don't know and should know that would take me so much more time to learn on my own. It's a chance to meet and reconnect with expats and locals and it was also a lot of fun. My heart is still filled with joy from the party at The Corner at Michigan and Trumbull aka Tiger Stadium on the Thursday evening. It got to do batting practice and Bettye LaVette an American soul singer-songwriter raised in Detroit whose 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise brought her deserved acclaim gave an intimate performance I'll never forget. Colleen talks about the many new ways we were able to see neighborhoods and so many of the ways that so many are doing so much in Detroit.

Paul and Jennifer Eisenstein and I met up at the Fish and The Hog in Waimea on Hawaii Island. I've known Paul Eisenstein, Automotive Journalist TheDetroitBureau.com since the late 1970's in Detroit when he was with WXYZ Channel 7 and a regular at Emily's Across the Street. However, we had not seen each other for 35+ years. Paul & Jennifer were on the Kona Coast for the roll out of the 2018 Hyundai Kona at the beautiful Mauna Kea Resort. I call Kona home. I call Detroit home. I feel a part of both communities and like many Detroiters who I meet up with here on Hawaii Island it was fun to learn they too have been here enough to feel very at home. So talking about Kona and the new 2018 Hyundai Kona was fun. And very interesting to hear Paul share what has to be considered when car names are being created. I've listened on line for years to Paul's automotive related conversations from all parts of the world. It was very fun to finally reconnect in person and meet Jennifer and feel the Detroit bond while in Kona. While they got out of the snow in Michigan to be in Hawaii and cover the roll out of the 2018 Hyundai Kona, it was winter like weather in Hawaii that week. I thought Paul shared that in a polite manner while also describing well all the different climates we have here on Hawaii Island and let it work for him while test driving the new Hyundai Kona. This is Paul's lead in to the story about the Hyundai Kona on his website TheDetroitBureau.com by Paul Esisenstein ... So much for palm trees swaying in a sunny, South Pacific breeze. The wind is blowing, all right, but the normally desert-like Kona Coast is anything but warm and dry as we head out for a day’s drive across the Big Island of Hawaii. Actually, we’re just fine with that, as it gives us a chance to put the new 2019 Hyundai Kona through its paces as we explore one of the most ecologically diverse places on the planet. By the time we wrap up we’ll experience just about every sort of weather one can imagine short of snow – and at the top of Saddle Road, which cuts between the currently dormant Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, even a blizzard is possible. We’ve spent nearly 12 hours in the air flying to, yes, Kona, Hawaii to see just how well the new Kona crossover lives up our expectations. Hyundai was slow to recognize one of the most dramatic shifts in the automotive market, the rapid shift from sedans and coupes to SUVs and crossover-utility vehicles. As it rolls into dealer showrooms across the U.S. in the coming weeks, it becomes the Korean brand’s third utility vehicle, joining the compact Tucson and midsize Santa Fe – with an assortment of others, including the hydrogen-powered Nexo, to follow. On a personal note: I signed up for Paul's at the TheDetroitBureau.com. I'm new to his website. After seeing all the stories I get what he means when he says he loves what he does because he is not just talking and covering stories about cars. So many subjects and interesting people that are part of the tapestry of all the back stories related to the automotive industry he shares on the site. I love learning.

Emily T Gail Talk Story - Thomas E Page is making a difference in Detroit.

Gary Lichtman, Director of Media Relations University of Detroit-Mercy has over recent years educated me not just about the University however about how many alumni are doing good things in Detroit. Like Tom Page a long time mutual friend. Each year, University of Detroit Mercy honors seven alumni — one from each of the colleges and schools at the University — with a Spirit of Detroit Mercy award. Tom is one of the honorees this year from the College of Liberal Arts & Education. These honorees are alumni who have marked themselves with distinction in their career and in their personal life. I thought it was a good time to catch up and talk with Tom. Tom and I talk story about his love of Detroit, his committment to give back to University of Detroit/Mercy and his family roots in Detroit. He shares having been with the Detroit Police Dept., and the challenge and success he experience of going to LAPD as a result of a layoff in Detroit. And it's obvious since he has come back to Detroit, he continues to do what he can to make a difference in Detroit and contribute to his University of Detroit/Mercy in gratitude for the education he received in many ways. . Meanwhile... this is a good read I think. I took it from the udmercy.edu/alumni page.... Thomas E. Page describes himself as a regular guy — “Call me Tom,” he says — but he’s much more than that. The former Detroit and Los Angeles police officer — now retired — has taken on the roles of ad hoc ambassador for the city of Detroit and promoter and devotee of bicycling in the city. These two activities keep him very busy. He is also a major booster of University of Detroit Mercy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1971 and a master’s degree in Urban Studies in ’76 from University of Detroit and he credits his education for his success. “One of the things I learned here is that education is much more than knowledge of facts,” Page said. “A person needs to be able to adapt to changes in technology, in society and to think for themselves. Things change so rapidly in society today that we have to look at things in a circular way, not a linear way, because one issue is affected by so many other things — it’s not just ‘this happened then that happened.’ ” That kind of global thinking, he said, made him a good police officer. His career in law enforcement began with the Detroit Police Department before he headed out to Los Angeles where he worked for about 20 years with the LAPD. It was there he began work on a new initiative, helping to create a standardized, effective approach to combat drug-impaired driving. “It became very important for police to know what they were dealing with in terms of drug use,” Page said. He helped create the first formal Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) curriculum for police officers and has taught drug influence recognition and criminal justice topics to police and prosecutors across the country and around the world. In his current role as a law enforcement consultant and DRE Emeritus, Page regularly provides expert testimony on the impairing effects of alcohol and legal and illegal drugs on driving in courts around the United States. Page has written extensively about techniques officers can use to determine what types of drugs a person may be under the influence of. After retiring from the LAPD as the Officer-in-Charge of the department’s Drug Recognition Expert program, Page realized it was time to put his Urban Studies degree to use and moved back to Detroit’s Midtown area. “I saw all the things that were happening in Detroit and started to get more involved, and I wanted to vote here,” he said. “I wanted a say in what was going on.” As he reacquainted himself with his hometown, he began hosting bicycling events around the city — he’d long been a bicycling enthusiast — and getting involved with neighborhood organizations, he found himself drawn back to Detroit Mercy’s McNichols Campus. He served on the Board of Advisors for the College of Liberal Arts & Education and attends many University-sponsored events. He even makes sure some of his bike tours make their way to campus, just to show it off to people who don’t know its beauty. He recently showed just how he feels about the University and its students by giving two significant gifts designed with the same goal in mind. “I’ve realized what’s important to me,” he said. “I’m secure; I don’t need more stuff. But what I could do is to create a legacy that gets carried on at this University, which I care deeply about.” One gift is designed to have an immediate impact on the current student experience. Each year for five years, Page has pledged to support a project designed to build an energized student body and campus. Last year, his gift paid for two bicycle repair stations on the McNichols campus; this year, the gift will be used to establish a bicycle loan program. Four bicycles, specially designed by Detroit Bikes in Detroit Mercy colors, will be available on campus for students to borrow. The details of this program are still a work in progress, but the bicycles will be ready to use this fall. This year’s gift also supports a dean-designated initiative in the College of Liberal Arts & Education as well as the women’s soccer team. In addition to Page’s generous five-year annual gift commitment, he has also included the University in his estate planning, leaving a significant and transformational gift to enhance student life on the McNichols Campus. “This gift is in support of the morality, the ethics, the very DNA of Detroit Mercy,” Page said. “This place serves a very wonderful purpose for our community and our society, and we need to support that.” “I want the students on campus to feel the same way about this University that I do,” Page said. “I want them to know there are alumni who care about them and care about this city.” “Tom Page’s significant gifts to University of Detroit Mercy are reflections of the love he has for his alma mater and the high value he has placed on the education he received,” said Detroit Mercy President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D. “His generous ways of supporting current and future students will undoubtedly inspire others to express appreciation for their successful and boundless careers.” Page acknowledges there is yet another motive for the gifts: To provide inspiration. “I still have many friends — many of them Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity brothers — I met at the University, and we’re at the stage in our lives where it’s time for some of them to give back to the school because of what it has meant to them,” Page said. “I want them to say, ‘If Tom Page can do this, I can do something.’ ” “I want my gifts to go to something that’s actually useful,” he said. “I want to help create a vibrant campus experience for the students.”

I listened to the show again last week after watching LUGE to refresh what John, who has been involved in the sport of LUGE for many years had shared with us. It was so interesting so I am running it again. John explains the development process for luge athletes, the significant differences between natural track and artificial track luge. He also explains why it can be said that three of the five luge tracks in the country are located in Michigan. The artificial track at the Muskegon State Park which is iced is one. The 2-curve fiberglass track on which wheeled-sleds are used during three seasons in the state park is another. And then there is the half-mile long natural track in Negaunee, Michigan on which competitions at the local, national, continental, and World Cup levels have been held for 29 years. It was a fun conversation for several reason. Informative however best of all John and I were classmates, played in our high school band together and was great to reconnect.

JR De Groote's WHT column today had the headline ... Kelly Birdies 18, shocks Montgomerie with 1st win at Hualalai. Here is an excerpt from JR's column that tells well how Jerry won. "Staring down the wide 16th fairway at Hualalai, Kelly sliced his drive into an usually untouched patch of a’a lava. After a short search-and-rescue, the PGA TOUR Champions newly-named Rookie of the Year dropped his ball, saved bogey, kept his head, and down just a stroke, gave himself a chance. He would still need a little help to chase down Colin Montgomerie, but that came when the Hall of Fame Scot made an inexplicable mistake of his own on 18, setting up a finish for the ages at the Champions Tour’s season-opening event. In front of a crowd of 400-plus on the 18th green, Kelly nailed a 17-foot birdie putt, turning a one-shot deficit into a victory when he watched Montgomerie miss a 6-foot par putt." It was a beautiful trophy and closing presentation on Golf Channel and like every year the Lim Family Hula Halua performing on the 18th to a large crowd. I loved Jerry comments about his long time friendship with Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Operations at Hualalai and how their friendship played a part in his win. Fun stuff.

Jack Berry is a long time friend and in many ways has been a mentor. We had a fun talk story. Reminded me how much I love my friendship with Jack and mutual support. I hope you will listen. Whether you were a reader of Jack's during his many years at the Detroit News, and now in his retirement with Art and Jeannie McCafferty's Michigan Golfer or just enjoy taking about sports and how it weaves into our lives and friendships I think you will pick up how much Jack loves what he does so well. Tells stories. And I love pulling the stories out of Jack ... about how he has made a difference. Like how he was the one who got the locker room ban of females into the locker at the Masters lifted because he felt it was the right thing for them to do and he was going to do something about it. Jack covered 43 Masters!!!! This is the bio from when Jack was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2003. Jack Berry is a renowned sports writer who honed his ability reporting sports in the Detroit area. Beginning his sports writing career with the UPI, United Press International, in Detroit, he went on to write for both the Free Press and the Detroit News. A talented writer, Jack covered most sports and all of our national sports teams. Covering golf for many years allowed Jack to bear witness to some of the great events in golf. Jack also loved writing about amateur golf and covered 30-plus Michigan Amateurs. For committee service on the Michigan Golf Summits I and II, he received an Outstanding Service Award. Jack wrote about Michigan golf for 40 years. During this time, he had a strong, national influence on promoting the sport for all golfers. He served for more than ten years on the Board of Directors of the National Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), two years in the mid 80’s as President and eight years in the 90’s as Secretary-Treasurer. As President in 1984, he successfully intervened with Augusta National Golf Club Chairman, Hord Hardin, to lift the ban on female reporters in the Masters’ locker room. Golf throughout the state of Michigan benefited from Jack Berry’s powerful pen. He advanced the promotion of golf in our state by writing the Guide to Michigan Golf, first published in 1991 and updated in 1993. He followed this in 1992, with an influential inside back cover column for Golf World entitled, “A Convincing Case for Michigan: When it comes to golf, this Northern state is state of the art.” Jack also used his skills to promote and publicize the formation of the Michigan Women’s Publinx Golf Association and the Metro Detroit Executive Women’s Golf Association. He is a regular contributor to the Michigan Golfer. The GAM Distinguished Award in 1997 acknowledged his wealth of contributions to amateur golf and more than three decades of writing that inspired the growth and maintained the popularity of golf in Michigan. Since retiring, he freelances for national and local golf publications. Locally, he serves as the GWAA’s representative at Michigan State University, interviewing journalism students as prospective scholarship recipients. For more information contact Emily at 896-6780 or emilytgail@emilys.org Here is some back story to the history of the Hawaii State Open ... which became the Hawaiian Open ... Past champions include 1987 U.S. Open Champion Scott Simpson and local favorites Japan PGA touring professional David Ishii and PGA Tour player Dean Wilson. David is the only player to have won both the Hawaii State Open and the Hawaiian Open. The Hawaii State Open is one of Hawaii’s oldest tournaments and has an interesting history. According to the Aloha Section PGA web site, it began in 1974 as a revival of the original Hawaiian Open which began in the 1920's to determine the best golfer in the Islands. Great players from the mainland were invited to compete and did so for more than 30 years. Because of the diversity of players and the boost in economy from these events, three former Waialae Country Club presidents, Ken Brown, John Bellinger and Francis Wright asked the PGA Tour in 1965, to add the Hawaiian Open as a regular stop on the PGA Tour. Although this was a great commercial success, it restricted Hawaiian pros and amateurs from participating in the Hawaiian Open, since now to play in the event, you had to be a playing member on the PGA Tour. So for a few years there was not a premier event for Hawaiian players. The tournament was revived in 1974 and it was called the Hawaii State Open with same mission: to find the best golfer in Hawaii with the Ted Makalena perpetual trophy after Makalena who was the first Hawaii resident to win a PGA Tour event – the 1966 PGA Tour Hawaiian Open. In 1976, a women’s division was added. In 1989, a senior division was added. It was run by the Oahu Junior Golf Association until 1993 when it was taken over by the Aloha Section PGA and in 2006 the Aloha Section PGA Foundation took over and has full fields each year.

Greg McLaughlin, President PGA TOUR Champions talks about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai returning to the Big Island of Hawaii for the 22nd year. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally.
