In this essential solo episode, Dr. Marianne challenges the narrow and harmful narrative that eating disorders primarily affect girls and women. She explores how toxic masculinity shapes, and often hides, disordered eating and body shame in boys and men. Backed by recent research, this episode unpacks how muscle dysmorphia, bingeing, and restriction are frequently dismissed as “normal” male behaviors, even when they reflect deep emotional pain. Dr. Marianne offers a liberation-focused framework for understanding the unique barriers boys and men face in getting help, and how we can dismantle the systems that reinforce silence, shame, and suffering. CONTENT CAUTION:This episode includes discussion of eating disorder behaviors, muscle dysmorphia, trauma, and toxic masculinity. Please take care while listening. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How toxic masculinity discourages emotional expression and reinforces disordered eating Why boys and men with eating disorders are often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed What muscle dysmorphia is and how it manifests in teen boys and adult men How social media trends like “looksmaxxing” fuel body obsession and psychological distress The role of trauma, emotional suppression, and performance culture in male ED experiences How clinicians, caregivers, and educators can support male-identified folks through a liberationist lens What affirming, emotionally honest healing can look like outside of gendered expectations LISTEN TO OTHER EPISODES ABOUT MEN, MUSCULARITY, & EATING DISORDERS: Men, Muscularity, Exercise, & Eating Disorder Stigmas with George Mycock, MSc @myo_minds on Apple & Spotify. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The fitness industry is on the brink of a massive transformation, and artificial intelligence will be the catalyst. Drawing from twenty years of experience as a trainer and gym owner, I'm making a bold prediction: AI will eliminate more personal training jobs than COVID did in 2020, when over 20% of gyms closed permanently and 1.4 million fitness jobs disappeared. This technological revolution will expose a harsh truth about our industry – most trainers lack the fundamental skills needed for long-term success. With 90% of textbook-certified trainers quitting within their first year, it's clear that passing a multiple-choice exam doesn't prepare you for real-world success. What's missing? Three critical components: technical skills (proper assessment and programming), business acumen, and effective people skills. To demonstrate this coming shift, I compared a $100 online program from a popular fitness influencer with a workout I created using ChatGPT in minutes. The differences were shocking. The purchased program offered generic macro splits, potentially dangerous exercise volumes (including "100 sumo deadlifts" after multiple heavy supersets), and no personalization options. Meanwhile, the AI-generated program included appropriate progressions/regressions, balanced movement patterns, and sensible training approaches – all hallmarks of competent programming.By 2030, when experts predict we'll reach artificial general intelligence, consumers will routinely use AI to evaluate fitness programs before purchasing them. The technology will immediately expose which coaches truly understand exercise science versus those selling glorified exercise lists. The fitness professionals who survive will be those who invested in hands-on experience, internships, and continuous education – and who leverage AI as a tool rather than seeing it as a threat.Ready to future-proof your fitness career? Poojan's journey from gym trainer to thriving entrepreneur offers a masterclass in leveling up your fitness career through strategic education, powerful networking, and unwavering persistence.Starting at just $30 per hour, Poojan now commands $100-120 per session and recently celebrated his most profitable month ever—clearing over $15,000 in June alone. The transformation wasn't magical but methodical, built on a foundation of continuing education that gave him the confidence and skills to solve client problems other trainers couldn't address."The only way you can fail is if you quit," Poojan shares, revealing how he overcame the imposter syndrome that plagues so many fitness professionals. By investing in specialized training that taught him advanced assessment techniques and corrective strategies, he positioned himself as a solution provider rather than just another trainer. This expertise allowed him to build relationships with physical therapists, dietitians, and chiropractors who now refer clients to him regularly. The conversation dives deep into practical business strategies, from systematizing the client acquisition process to reframing limiting beliefs that hold trainers back from charging what they're worth. Poojan sales system—complete with qualification questions and consultation deposits—ensures he only invests time in serious prospects while maintaining an impressive conversion rate.Perhaps most valuable is the discussion about mindset shifts required for business growth. Rather than asking "how can I make $10K a month?" Poojan learned to invert the question: "what would prevent me from making $10K a month?" This systems-thinking approach, combined with lessons borrowed from other industries and entrepreneurs, accelerated his business development farWant to ask us a question? This week Bryan Dawson sits down with Dallas Terrell, a Personal Trainer in Huntsville who recently authored a book, "Who Kidnapped Uncle Tom and Why It Matters?" Uncle Tom's Cabin played a pivotal role in Terrell's early life in liberal St. Louis where he watched Democrats destroy everything they touched. Terrell was always one to ask "Why?" His family's response was to hand him a book. The constant questioning and reading of countless books led him into his current vocation, as well as his conservative and theological stances. Terrell's father died in an accident when he was three, so he was raised by a strong conservative mother who refused government assistance. He was blessed to have many men in the community that treated him like a son and shaped him into the man he is today. Big Box Gyms: Yay or Nay? And how do they compare to working out with a personal trainer? Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher look at big box gyms and the benefits of working with a personal trainer. You'll hear about everything from motivation and habit-building to fitness results, and will walk away with clarity on which option to go for to make the most out of your time and exercising efforts. Dr. James Fisher kicks things off by sharing a frightening stat: only about 10% of the population engages in regular strength training. What's interesting is the fact that only about one-third of people attend big box gyms, meaning that about two-thirds of people don't actually even attend once per week… Dr. Fisher and some of his colleagues have done some research and have identified a lack of motivation, not being supervised and advised by a personal trainer, and not seeing progress from your workouts, as key factors that lead to that phenomenon. Did you know that 50% of new gym members will stop their membership within the first six months because of non-attendance? True, big box gyms provide you with the space and equipment you need… but if you aren't already engaged or lack a certain level of understanding and commitment, you won't attend regularly. To some degree, gyms are reliant upon a degree of non-attendance – if all of their members showed up at the same time, they would have to turn some people away because of maximum occupancy. Dr. Fisher touches upon a couple of big social elements that play a crucial role in the big box gym context. Ask yourself this: “When thinking about the gym, do I go there for the health benefits of exercising or for the social element in that environment?” Amy Hudson talks about the lack of time aspect that's often part of the equation for many people who are thinking about strength training. Dr. Fisher and Amy discuss how a model like the Exercise Coach Studio's one differs from big box gyms and helps people succeed. Studies on exercising motivation show that, unlike other groups like people who focus on CrossFit, people engaged in supervised strength training reported higher motivation for things such as ill health avoidance and health-related benefits as key reasons for exercising. Amy lists one of the key motivators for having a personal trainer: it collapses the timeline for you to get where you want to get to. As she points out, getting people to that place of seeing results faster will lead to them being motivated and wanting to continue with exercising regularly. Amy shares a question they often ask their Exercise Coach: “If you and I were sitting here a year from today, what things would have to happen for you to feel very satisfied with your progress?” Amy and Dr. Fisher go into studies in which participants were paid to go to the gym… but were still unsuccessful with exercising regularly. A good reminder from Amy: motivation is hard to keep, and it's important to stay honest about that.     Mentioned in This Episode: The Exercise Coach - Get 2 Free Sessions! Can a waiver actually protect you from liability? Where exactly is the line between personal training and physical therapy? These are the critical questions facing fitness professionals in what legal expert Barbara Zabawa calls "the Wild West" of wellness law.In this eye-opening conversation, Professor Zabawa—a wellness law specialist with 25 years of experience and author of "No More Wild West: The Need for Standards in the Wellness Industry"—cuts through the confusion surrounding fitness industry legalities. She reveals why certifications aren't legally required (despite what many believe), explains how gyms and insurance companies create private requirements that feel like legal mandates, and offers a sobering look at when waivers actually protect you—and when they absolutely don't.The discussion takes a particularly practical turn when addressing scope of practice concerns. Zabawa describes the "ideal client" for non-licensed professionals and the red flags that should prompt referrals to licensed healthcare providers. For trainers working online, she shares a surprising legal risk many never consider: being held liable for visible hazards in your remote client's environment.Perhaps most valuable is Zabawa's insight into why more injured clients don't sue their trainers (it's not what you think), and the specific steps fitness professionals can take to protect themselves legally. Whether you're a seasoned trainer or just starting your fitness career, this conversation provides crucial knowledge that could save your business and reputation.Looking for more protection? Whether in the United States or India, personal trainers often fight an uphill battle against stigmas that minimize their profession as "just a side hustle" rather than a legitimate career path. This eye-opening conversation with Devang, a fitness instructor from Gujarat, India, reveals surprising parallels in the challenges trainers face worldwide—and actionable strategies to overcome them.Devang shares his journey from engineering student to fitness professional, including the discouraging first question from his family: "Who's gonna marry you?" This response highlights the universal undervaluation of fitness careers despite their critical importance in addressing public health crises. In India, where only 4% of the 1.4 billion population engages in physical activity, metabolic diseases run rampant through generations of families. The podcast dives deep into why personal training lacks prestige—primarily due to minimal entry barriers compared to respected professions like medicine or law. When anyone with a good physique can become a trainer without certification, the profession's perceived value diminishes. This problem compounds when trainers receive only 30% of personal training fees in commercial gym settings while working grueling 12-16 hour days. The conversation shifts from problem to solution, outlining a blueprint for elevating the profession beyond collecting certifications. Successful trainers develop business acumen, network with healthcare professionals, and create comprehensive wellness centers that command respect. By building teams that include physical therapists and dieticians, trainers position themselves as integral parts of the healthcare ecosystem rather than isolated fitness specialists.Ready to transform your passion for fitness into a respected, sustainable career?
