Spoiler alert: Diet Culture (along with its co-conspirators The Patriarchy and White Supremacy) is THE WOOOORST.And even though it may be called “diet" culture, this term has come to represent a tangled, shitty web of harmful systems that impact not just our relationship with food, but also our relationship with our bodies, movement, and how much privilege (or lack thereof) we carry in our day-to-day lives.For the majority of people who were raised in that overculture, “exercise” was something to be dreaded— an entirely unpleasant (even punishing) experience intended to whittle away fat (which was determined to be disgusting and unacceptable), and carve sharp, angular edges.But there is a new generation of fitness leaders heading the charge to both dismantle diet culture and revolutionize our relationship with movement. One of them is badass Nashville-based personal trainer Barb Puzanovova, who is on a mission to bring the JOY back to training and fitness.In this episode with Barb, we dig into the harm caused by diet culture, how to reclaim bodily autonomy in regards to movement, and why the conversation around privilege and body size in our society is complicated.Here's the truth: Thin doesn't equal healthy, fat doesn't equal unhealthy, exercise doesn't have to be about weight loss, and most importantly, health is context-dependent. Joining Lucinda to discuss this is Gary Cookson of Real HR, who brings his perspective to this fascinating topic. KEY TAKEAWAYS Underperformance was formerly heavily driven by a lack of clarity, fuelled by lack of feedback and a lack of goals and expectations. The new hybrid working world comes with its own new set of contributing factors to underperformance. This will require leaders to do things differently, and team members to react to these changes differently. Hybrid working has had an impact on the types of misconduct and underperformance that organisations are seeing, such as conduct on video calls, overhearing inappropriate comments and other factors that take some getting used to. Much in the way of productivity is taking place through asynchronous working methods, email, and social channels that do not allow others to see who they're working with directly. A lack of direct contact can breed mistrust. In addition, Gary is a CIPD Chartered Fellow, a Fellow of the Learning and Performance Institute, a qualified coach and member of the Association for Coaching. Furthermore, he is a Personal Trainer, a teacher, a qualified workplace mediator, a qualified H&S professional, a distance learning tutor. And more besides… Career-wise, before launching EPIC, Gary was Associate HR Director at the DBS, and HR Director at Trafford College. Prior to that he was responsible for HR/OD integration work at a new housing group. Gary, was also Head of HR & OD at Golden Gates Housing Trust for 11 years, has experience of working in a call centre, a national charity and an international pharmaceuticals company. Prior to working in HR he qualified as a secondary school teacher (teaching History). Gary has also managed and delivered CIPD programmes for many years and delivered face to face and distance learning qualifications for a range of providers and awarding bodies. Abe, grew up in Steamboat Springs, CO where he excelled at a young age within the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, ultimately placing 2nd in the 2007 Junior Olympics, 3rd in Men's Dual Moguls, and 9th in the 2007 US Nationals barely missing the cut for the US Ski Team. With a natural love for training in the off-season, Abe was able to receive individualized programming from former olympians and olympic-level strength coaches alike. This experience of training on a program designed for his unique needs changed how he viewed physical fitness, strength, and conditioning. Ultimately this passion pushed Abe to quit his job at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in 2014 and pursue a career as a personal trainer at Equinox in Santa Monica, California. Abe moved up quickly within Equinox where he soaked up every continuing education opportunity including FMS Level I and II, Kettlebell Athletics Level I, Precision Nutrition Level I, and USAW Level I Coach, ultimately landing him a position as a Tier X Coach. In 2019 he helped launch the Tier X Program at Equinox Santa Monica following his nomination as Equinox Personal Trainer of the Year. When the pandemic struck, Abe moved his clientele virtual to accommodate the closure of gyms and lack of in-person training.
